KYRON HORMAN MISSING AND ENDANGERED: SEARCH INTENSIFIES FOR MISSING 7 YEAR OLD PORTLAND BOY

Posted by BOC Staff | Kyron Horman,Missing and Endangered,Missing Child | Monday 7 June 2010 4:14 pm

Portland, OR– 7 year old Kyron Hormon is a Red Eyed Tree Frog Expert.

Kyron, his Step-Mom and former teacher Terri Moulton Horman worked diligently on Kyron’s submission to the second grade science fair on Friday June 4 at 8am. The bright-eyed, bespectacled, herpetologist in training also dressed for the occasion in his best CSI tshirt.

At 8:45 am, Terri said goodbye to her son who was a few feet from his classroom and left the Skyline School to return home to Kyron’s 18 month old sister.

Kyron has not been seen or heard from since.

Schoolhorman

What is particularly troubling is that Kyron seemingly vanished from the school that matriculates grades Kindergarden through 8th.,without anyone noticing his backpack and jacket were left on his desk in homeroom.

Although Kyron and his mom were seen together that morning as they dropped off his belongings in his classroom prior to viewing the science fair exhibits, he was marked absent. Kyron was also scheduled to be in the talent show at 1PM that same afternoon.

SkylineSchool

At approximately 3:45PM Terri Horman was waiting at the bus stop for Kyron, and when he did not get off the bus, she ran home and called the school, who told her he had been marked absent.

Multnomah County Sheriff received the 911 call from her at 4PM. Within minutes of Ms. Horman’s frantic alert, the state-wide hunt fo Kyron Horman, now in it’s seventh day, began.

Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton is leading 18 counties in Oregon in the search for young Kyron, and police have released no new details about the timeline surrounding his disappearance. Specifically, the last confirmed sighting of Kyron was at approximately 9am, but police will not say where that was within the school, or who he was with. Staton says they have no evidence Kyron was abducted, which would trigger an Amber alert.

The Horman family residence, in a deeply wooded area is 2.9 miles from the Skyline School, and his been the focus of explanded search efforts continuing through today.

Skyline

When asked why the MCSO is releasing very little information as to what they think happened to Kyron, Capt. Monte Reiser:

If information gets out too early or before authorities have substantiated the tips, it “can affect the integrity of the investigation,” he said. “Misleading information can hamper both the search effort and the investigation.”

Incident commanders also said they would respect the Horman family’s wishes not to share their anguish with the public.

The Parents and family of Kyron Horman, through a statement read by MCSO Staton have publicly appealed for the community to continue support efforts to locate their son. The Hormon’s have refused all interview requests at presstime.

Please check back to blinkoncrime.com for updates in the search for Kyron Horman.

Blinkoncrime.com Editor notes:

By 9am, the school day had already started and students were assembled into groups to tour the science fair. Student Parents would have vacated the building already.

The Science Fair does not appear on the school calendar, however, the talent show does, which means the bulk of the school would have been in attendance, at the same time, at 1PM. Possibility of someone leaving the school undetected and unsupervised?

Three days into the investigation, police state they have interviewed “most” of the faculty. For what reason, with a missing and endangered 7 year old child would they only have interviewed “most” of the faculty?

Search Teams are rechecking areas previously searched. In my mind, they have identified a suspect, and have possible ping data.

    This is so sad.

Most school’s now adays have cameras in the classrooms and most definitely in the main hall way- sec.desk area. I was shocked to read this school had none. It is alarming that they marked this little guy absent- after his being seen with his mom earlier. Most teachers ask friends has anyone seen “Kyron”- today- Where’s Kyron? Did they not take attendance in his homeroom where his back back and belongings were?

You also stated,I believe, Blink, that there was only one entrance/exit to the school? How can this be? fire laws ect. Teachers hardly ever use the same entrance and exit as the children- not to mention maintenance people use the exits closest to the dumpsters, right?

In my experience, if a child is dropped off early, and left unattended, they will often times go to the playground, Did Kyron stay inside or did he try to get in some playtime? IME if a child is dropped off too early, some teachers or staff tell them to go outside until class starts- are we sure this didn’t happen?

Little Kyron and his sister and family are in my prayers.

This weighs heavily on me too. I have feeling that the parents have an idea who took him. I tried to watch a program on TV about the Dougan child–the one that was taken and kept for 18 years–couldnt watch but a few minutes of it though. As people and parole officers came to the house and neighbors never even check the back yard or anything–astounding. And very frightening about going ahead and checking dumpsters and heaters etc. but the more things that are checked the better.

Also, like a poster said above, a plain clothes officer talked to children that had just had a stranger danger course and they were still receptive. I try to stress a point never let anyone take you from point a to point b even if you have to be injured to get away. I think every child should have some type of defense course at an early age so they dont freeze up. Just a few thoughts.

I have been wondering about the photos myself. For instance, in the well publicized photo of Kyron, one can clearly see another child in the left rear. There’s bound to be lots of pics that event.

I have to apologize for my serial commenting today. I too get way too emotionally invested in missing children cases. I am fairly certain I will obsess with this until he is found. I got zilch done at work today. But I now know the entire terrain of Portland and the locations of its many, many, many sex offenders. Man, there are a lot of them in this world. If only there was a roach hotel, ant poision, or a termite bomb we could drop to just stop their proliferation.

Don’t apolly, he needs the help and compassion of all of us to be found. I believe that strongly.

  13. TR says:

Dad seemed much less emotional than did step father. In and of itself doesn’t say much, but? I also noticed that Kyron’s mother, Desiree had no feelings for Terri despite Terri’s obvious attempt to reach out. I’m looking for transcripts now. My radar is going up on Terri…but it could just be power of suggestion.

  14. Twinkletoes says:

Blink asked for observations regarding father and step father’s words. “Please Kyron keep up the hope. We believe in you . . .” sounds like step-father saying, if you can find a way to send out a signal to anyone anywhere, do it. Also, interesting to me that the fathers would speak and not the mothers. I am not sure what that means but it seems logical to consider the speakers were chosen by LE as a way to communicate with the perp(s) and for some reason, the fathers were important. Or the fathers could pull it off and the mothers couldn’t. The poor step mother looked like she was going to go out of her mind. Poor family.

It’s what wasn’t said at the statement that’s interesting to me; no pleas were made to the abductor or for Kyron’s safe return, and it seems they could have personalized him to an abductor as well. It makes me think that they either know who he’s with and don’t believe he’s in mortal danger from that person, or they already think it’s too late? I really hope and pray it’s the former. :(

  17. Twinkletoes says:

    Tony Young:

“Hello, My name is Tony Young and I am Kyron’s stepfather. The family has asked me speak on their behalf today. I would just like to say, Kyron, we miss you, we love you and we need you home right now. We’re doing everything we can to work with law enforcement and the search and the rescue crews to make sure you can get back to us as soon as possible.

“We want to say how much we appreciate the outpouring of love and support, prayer and thoughts as we wait for you. Your school friends and their families and teachers and staff at your school and the community as a whole have shown how much impact one little boy’s smile can have on a community.

“You mean everything to us and until you come home, this family is not complete. Please Kyron keep up the hope. We believe in you and we know you will be back with us soon.”

    Kaine Horman, Kyron’s father:

“Hi, I’m Kaine. I’m Kyron’s father. We want to thank the community the parents, the children, the bus drivers and all of those who are being interviewed multiple times to help find Kyron. Thank you. We as the family know how difficult and stressful this is, but your memories and statements can help us find Kyron.

“We will never be able to thank you enough for that help.

“Finally, we would like to thank the media. If it was not for you showing Kyron on every newscast and printing his story in the paper, his face would not be known to everyone. People from around the nation have seen his picture. This helps tremendously.

“Please help us bring Kyron home.”

    They know who is responsible.

They are attempting to relax those that are being interviewed multiple times, because they fear if Kyron has not been harmed, they want him to know there is still time to do the right thing and the community is watching, and they also want him to know this will ruin their standing in this community. I am going to stop there in an effort to keep positive thoughts flowing here.

I apolly if this has been brought up, but where his Kyron’s bio mom in all this? And if anyone knows, why aren’t the authorities ready to call this a kidnapping?

Someone in that school has to know. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Have they scoured the entire school for possible hiding places….or worse….is he being held against his will within the school?

I’m praying to God he is found alive and healthy. Come home Kyron…..you are ‘the champ’! xo

  19. TR says:

    Blink–
You are right…his father’s words do seem indicate exactly that. Interesting that he included bus drivers in his “speech” because such a person would have a window of opportunity between morning pick ups and afternoon drop offs. Also, the whole bus scenario has been prominent in this story. Do we know anything the bus driver?

I actually think that example was given to give the perp a sense of relief, that they are looking in another direction, or random.

  20. TR says:

Point taken. I am just trying to come up with a possible person. Overall, the pool is somewhat limited (which is good) and I can only , they convince this individual to do the right thing. Keep us posted please! I am very focused on this little boy’s situation–I have a nephew his age and I know how naive they are. I also wonder if Kyron wasn’t in need of attention..and someone seized that opportunity to swoop in. With a baby/infant in the home, divorce, and an older step brother with some apparent troubles maybe Kyron was suffering some stress and emotional issues.

  22. JR says:

The father’s statement seems to focus more on everyone and everything else than actually finding his missing child. This basically ties in with Blink’s observations relating to their consciousness of the perp and concerns about themselves.

Also, the police have seem to be very tight-lipped about this whole investigation thus far – another sign to me, that they aren’t looking ‘too far from home’. I could be wrong but my guy told me something was fishy about this as soon as I heard the scenario of this story.

  23. Midwest Mom says:

    Blink,

I don’t know why I am telling you this, I feel pretty silly. I have never had visions before. Last night while I was praying for Kyron I had a vision of what appeared to be a older man, more specifically a man with a ponytail sitting on wicker chair in an empty barn. I didn’t see kyron but had a sense that he was in the same room

I wish I could have stayed with the vision, however as a new experience it scared and confused me. I think I am telling you just to be able to “do something” with my experience vs. Thinking it will help.. Please delete this if you it will harm kyron in anyway

I just can’t understand how this child was overlooked by his teacher. I feel she has failed him. Just does not add up.
Does anyone know if there is any type of business near there that would have cameras to have capture anything. I hope someone at the science fair caught something while taking pictures. We just need some sort of break in this case. Please let all our prayers be answered for the family.

To comment on the dads, I would say I felt the SD was far more personable and spoke of Kyron the way you would of a beloved child. Contrast that with the BD, who seemed detached, stiff and uncomfortable. When looking at the women, (I did not know who was who until after), the SM seemed more along the lines of the BD, vying for a response from the BM. The BM, obviously was the most distressed.
The comments section of the video article from above, indicated the SM & BD have an 18mo daughter, suggesting a crowded family. The dynamics are tough for any child. I am having trouble with him remaining alive unless with family.

Standing in the community? Doesn’t shout janitor to me, who might you mean?

Real or perceived, not sure yet. Everyone knows the custodians at my children’s school, they also work sporting events, family events, some are also bus drivers in am or pm, so from that perspective, as parents, you bet your bippy I introduce myself and acknowledge them every chance I get. I know where they live, in some cases their kids, etc.

As parents, it is YOUR JOB to know who may come into contact with your kids. It should be done politely and without disruption, but if one is not sure how to go about it, call the head of your PTA/PTO and simply ask them. Check minutes on your school board meeting.

I get alot of flack and eye rolls from people sometimes on the diligence I support and encourage on this issue (most especially from the blinkettes).

I can tell you I have never gotten that from the parent of a missing or murdered child.
    Food for thought

Blink curious as to what you think regarding his classroom teacher? Is she on your radar? If not, why? If so, why?

Nope. Obviously everyone is initially, but she has an alibis and none of her background suggests anything other than a well-liked, productive second grade teacher. Good question though, everyone who came into contact with Kyron, and is associated with the last place Kyron was seen will have a thorough interview including background and their associates.

  31. Angela_nw says:

I believe it was bio mom, step mom, bio dad and step dad who were on video today (Fri) pleading for return of Kyron (refuting theories of estrangement of bio or step mom).

That is correct. I did not see the estrangement some are referencing. Imo, if there were any creedence to the stepmom suspicion, no way would they all have appeared together, and it would be detected immediately in observation.

That said, something is sticking with me since then I cannot shake. I found it odd that Tony Young, step dad, addressed Kyron directly, and Dad Kaine addressed the community.

There was alot of grief in that hug, imo.

I think for me it breeds the possibility that there may have been some sort of vendetta or dislike to Kaine or Terri because they also did not go the standard personalization of the victim by the loving parents, which is standard transference tactic when the profile of a perp, imo, is known to them.

Did they notice someone paying too much attention to Kyron and did they address the issue at the school privately and this individual “showed them”?

If we agree it is likely this offender is known to them, can we assume this day was picked specifically? I think the 911 call would tell us the answer to that.

Ok, now this cheezes me off.

Normally, I enjoy a review or 2 from this site, although I admit it should really be taken as entertainment purposes, because everyone knows one example of body language in one context is in no way some sort of reliable character assessment.

That said, here is an “opinion” article, which does NOT INCLUDE any footage analysis of the parents, but states their behavior as suspicious. Outrageous, especially considering the parents DID give a press conf (all of them) that imo, (disclosure- I am no body language expert)belies “eyes for lies” own article. What will the follow up be by this author?

    http://www.eyesforlies.blogspot.com/2010/06/kyron-hormans-parents-acting-odd.html

  34. Barbara says:

I’m curious about something. . . Blink, you seem at least somewhat convinced LE knows who the perp is. I’m assuming that person remains in the community? Because otherwise, it would seem extremely neglectful not to have an APB out for this person who has been missing from school since Kyron has gone missing.

It is my opinion that the fact that they continue to state that they cannot say this is a kidnapping or abduction case, speaks volumes to me, but if I believe it is strategy based- it would be irresponsible of me to comment further in that regard.

    Hey there B.

Saw your comment on the Hinky and responded (while you were commenting I sent you an email!…lol). I agree with you. I don’t see what the eyesforlies person is seeing. I do see SOME things, but that’s through my own filters. And I think “body language” reading, etc. is highly subjective based on the observer’s filters.

As I stated in my email to you…I’m very troubled and have lots of questions. Look forward to your response.

Thanks V- will respond of course, but what bothered me about the article is that it is not based on any footage observations in the first place.

The thought of anyone further victimizing the parents of a missing child, unobjectively or based on subjective press accounts bothers me. Unintentional is not a defense, imo.

This was the first that I had read that there was a talent show scheduled for 1:00pm on the day Kyron went missing & Kyron was scheduled to be in it. As a mom & grandma I don’t know of too many parents or grandparents that would not attend the talent show if one of their offspring were to be in it so which parent or family member was going to attend that show & watch Kyron perform ? And when the child didn’t appear for that talent show why wasn’t he reported missing then at 1:00 instead of 4pm.. I still have an issue with why the school didn’t contact the designated emergency contact for Kyron when they realized he wasn’t in school.. The timeline concerning that talent show now bothers me..

To sum it up, it sounds like the sub. teacher noticed he was missing and may have been kind of panicked. The classroom teacher brushed it off as him being in the bathroom, but never followed up on it.
It makes you wonder… If the teacher thought he was in the bathroom, it implies that she thought he was present, not absent.

  40. shyloh says:

Blink “eyes for lies” Did a series on Sommer Thomspson’s case. The bloggers there did all they could to point fingers at her mother. Seen when there are children missing they REALLY PICK THE MOTHER’S APART. Every interview the mother (Dana <— spelling.) went on she was right there to accuse her of deception. I don’t read there any longer.

I just read the piece on the press conference and I have to say it only increased my concerns.

She states (para) that she can tell 20 things from a mere photo about a person’s habits/personality by identifying that person’s looks with someone similar that she knows. If anyone needs me to expand on how outrageously ridiculous that is, let me know.

My first reaction is to write a piece, analyzing the analysis, to show how completely subjective and “slanted” to suspect these people of anything at this point, is. Except, my view would be subjective as well, so what would that prove?

Let me say this, in different cases, I have worked with researchers that while they are skilled researchers, they are terrible analysts. Case in point, I had 2 that believed Somer Thompson’s Mother was 100% responsible in some form as to her daughter’s murder from day one. That evolved, if you can believe it, to them blaming her brother. Needless to say, that was the end of that foolishness. Investigative analysis training, the usage of all sources of information, includes the concept that your no.1 goal is to NOT pigeon hole your thinking, and I openly admit, on some cases that has been real work for me.

If you find yourself in a situation where someone you respect disagrees with your assessments, and you find yourself trying to persuade them as opposed to standing firm to your work, while considering their thoughts, you should evaluate “why”.

What happens is people get invested in “being right” instead of keeping an open hypothesis which clicks with known evidence and verified information, and frankly, logic. For me, my approach is always one of being open to learning and educating myself from these cases, so it is not focused on “I told you so”. E V E R.

The moment your investigation and research is geared to proving your theory, instead of the usage if the exclusionary technique, you have tainted your own work.

Lastly, how one can claim “wizardry” and expertise in body language/truth analysis based on same, and completely omit the man-sized hug between the dads in the middle of the press conference in *cough* anlysis, is boggling. Moving on.

Going to a different thought from my first instinct now after seeing the presser. I think the way they addressed Kyron’s disappearance in the press conference suggests to me they may not want to feed into the perp. Yes, Blink, to me that would suggest there may be a vendetta against the family. The focus was on the public keeping their eyes open for Kyron. I don’t know, but I think they believe he is alive, otherwise, I think LE may put out more info on a possible POI. Yes, I do believe they have a POI and had pings, but with the resources on this, I would think they could get on the area triangulated pretty quick and keep the search focus on that area, but if they are going from old pings prior to a battery being removed or phone being discarded, then I guess that they would perform numerous searches of areas of prior pings.
With that said, I still reserve my first instinct as this seems to be too perfect of a storm of events with such a high risk for a perp. There was literally no window of opportunity unless someone knew the parents would not be alerted to Kyrons absence from school. He disappeared after the second bell when attendance would be taken.

LE can always change tactics in order to keep the perp comfortable untill they slip. All parents together doing the presser together was important.
What is most difficult is that I can speculate all day, but there is literally nothing I can do but pray. This beautiful little boy has stolen my heart. Prayers for your safe return dear Kyron.

You literally hit on my biggest concern. If the perp saw this day, this oppty, as DECREASED RISK it changes things, in my mind.

I’d like to add my opinion on several things that have taken place on this case and I think are dangerous trends of online groups looking at these cases.

I’ve stated this on my site…as well. I’ll try to tone down my aggravation some since I’m in B’s living room.

There is a difference between analyzing a person’s statements and activities AFTER FACTS show they have been dishonest, hiding something, etc. and nit-picking a person’s reactions and words PRIOR TO FACTS that would point to that person being dishonest, etc.

I just had a comment at my site that shared where some other site had people stating the most ludicrous speculative statements about Terrie based solely on how they took statements on her Facebook. This is nothing but destructive speculation based solely on people’s filters…the “WWID”…”what would I do”. This is not helpful. This is a family that until we are presented with facts from LE working this case that “something’s just not right” with this family, we should respect the nightmare and horror they are living through.

Anyway – jumping off my soap box, and I know some people won’t agree with me, and that’s fine. But I wanted to vent…. :P

So, it’s a man who has been missing from work. However, he may not
be a school employee but employed elsewhere. He could have been there as a volunteer or parent. Perhaps he has a child at the school and is divorced so the mother has the custody and he has time to commit a crime? Such a tragic story–schools generally take great precautions to ensure safety and identify all strangers…in the excitement of this science fair they let down their guard. There is a special place in HELL for people who hurt children.

    And this one:

This guy is a “wanted” registered SO in same county.

    Fwiw, that’s new.

Is this someone they are looking at? TIA

no idea, can only tell you there were no wanted RSO’s in that county 2 days ago.
It is common to review RSO’s first, in fact, most now have to agree to polygraphs as a condition of parole. As if that is going to effing matter if they just molested someone.

Sorry, I do not believe pedos can ever be rehabilitated and I am so utterly sick of these cases I can’t even tell you.

Thank you, B. Just thought maybe I had missed information regarding a POI. I agree on the not believing pedos can ever be rehabilitiated. I say haul their arse to a deserted island, drop them off and then get the heck out of dodge…let them fend for themselves! JMO

Totally understand…will make that known from now on. My apologies and thank you!
