Inspiring Vigilance: The Murder Of Morgan Harrington One Year Later

Charlottesville, VA– Sunday October 17 marks the one-year anniversary of the worst day of Dan and Gil Harrington’s lives. Although they were not yet aware of the horror that had befallen their Roanoke, VA family, the next morning their daughter’s purse was found on the grounds of the University of Virginia Lanigan Field. Morgan Dana Harrington had vanished.

MorganChosenByDadboc

While attending a Metallica concert with friends Sarah Snead, Amelia Melvin and Dan Cassagne with tickets purchased 6 months earlier by Morgan’s Dad, Morgan, for reasons unknown, was outside John Paul Jones arena at approximately 8:45PM.

Morgan attempted to re-enter the arena but could not locate her ticket and was denied access to return to the venue.  Shortly thereafter, Sarah called Morgan at 8:48PM looking for her and was told she could not get back in and would be attempting to locate a ride, according to Snead.

Various witness accounts and in some cases corroborating statements from Virginia State Police (VSP), place Morgan in different areas of the adjacent parking lots of JPJ over the following 45 minutes, moving toward the far perimeter of UVA property.

According to the VSP, there is a witness statement that a person matching Morgan’s description was seen hitchhiking alone on the Copeley bridge at approximately 9:30PM.

After several private law enforcement searches and two volunteer based efforts organized by the Harrington’s failed to locate her, Morgan Harrington’s remains were discovered by a prominent Charlottesville land owner on his remote 700 acre farm in Albemarle County,  8 miles South of JPJ arena, on January 26th, 2010.  Morgan’s death has been classified as a homicide, however her cause of death has not been released.

Until July, the case seemed to be at a virtual standstill from an investigative perspective, in fact the only arrest to date is that of a man who provided a false lead to VSP, and was prosecuted for it.

On July 1st, as a direct result of an article linking Morgan’s case to an unsolved sexual assault case in 2005 in Fairfax, VA published by blinkoncrime.com, a sketch of a man forensically linked to both the Fairfax case and that of Morgan Harrington was released by the Virginia State Police, albeit grudgingly, at first.

Behind the scenes, Dan and Gil Harrington, who were made aware of the connection a few weeks earlier, were adamant the sketch was critical to developing leads and warning others and demanded the sketch be posted on the VSP website; it was uploaded later that afternoon at Dr. Harrington’s request.

Virginia State Police have not commented publicly on the case in several months, but in a private correspondence with a concerned blinkoncrime.com reader, Lt. Joe Rader, leading the investigation for VSP,  said not only is the case not cold, but he has recently assigned additional manpower to it.

Dan and Gil Harrington, Morgan’s bereaved parents, along with Morgan’s beloved brother Alex, have spent the last year keeping Morgan’s case alive through the development of their own family blog, TV and radio appearances, and most recently, a meeting regarding safety concerns with new University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan.  This Sunday, a memorial plaque to promote safety and honor Morgan Harrington is being presented to the Harrington’s on the Copely bridge.

Note From the Editor

“How would you describe the Harrington’s?”  I am asked this question frequently.

I always respond the same way.  “I would not”.

The grace and poise these parents have shown in the face of the worst conceivable tragedy to befall a parent is not something I could wordsmith or articulate.

If the question comes from someone I feel may help their cause, I offer to make the introduction, but I would never presume to speak for them.

The Harrington’s have created a legacy in memory of Morgan that only parents of a 20-year-old blossoming artist, music loving, budding educator could.

    Hi Blink and All.

I’m still here reading every day, hoping and praying for answers in Morgan’s case. It’s so good to see that so many are still here searching and waiting for justice for Morgan’s murder.

As always, my thoughts and prayers are with the Harrington family. It’s hard to believe it’s coming on to two years and still no arrest.

And yes, on a lighter note, I do like the squares and want to see mine. Nice touch Blink!

Those pictures on the security website …. I think ‘steroids’ . Natural muscle development could be possible but would require one to dedicate full time effort ?

men who use that form a tight knit community knowing it illegal but also a short cut to looking muscular

    Also steroids–> rage –> violence__>

Also its the connection to drugs and a supplier (sketch?)

Conjecture I know and not to be taken seriously altho it never hurts to think of all angles. There must be so much to work with eh?

About Eppard not sure if I remember correctly but he tried to save a puppy and at the same time was on a killing spree. how weird is that?

well if the facts don t add up there is always ‘she was acting irrational’

  8. George says:

    Blink,

“Shooter’s stance” to me means holding a handgun with both hands on the gun with the arms outstretched and with the feet wide apart. I suppose, to keep an open mind, Eppard may have had a shotgun, but it would be very difficult to get out of the car with a shotgun because of its length. Typically a person gets out of the car and then gets the shotgun from the car.

Shotguns are effective for a very short range in any case.

So let’s see the video still of young Eppard getting out of the car and assuming that “shooter’s stance” with whatever gun he had.

George, just giving you the facts, your correct in the verbiage of the report as to the stance, but he did not have a handgun on his person, that is a fact, he had the officers shotgun which was found underneath him.

Which case in point better have been a 12 g pistol grip, or we have an even bigger problem.

A key sign this needs oversight, is that the dash cams have not been released to this day, and I suppose, neither has any frequency chatter, if there was any, I know that no attempts were made to contact Eppard that way.

Lunsford refused to release the amount of rounds recovered in this kid. But I will tell you it exceeded the number of LEO at the scene

I guess someone would have to file an action to have the records released. Are Colby’s folks making any noise to find out what happened?

This suspect knows how to disable his victim from behind causing immediate loss of conciousness, yes, that is military, LE, security 101 training
    B

B – Could you help clear my confusion? Are u refering to RH’s DNA? Would it be that hard getting a warrant for it? I’d think if he were a suspect they would have gotten DNA by now….if any of us think there is a prob cause with what we know, then surely LE, having additional evidence could convince a judge to order it taken.

    redly,
sorry to take so long to get back to you, but I can see your point of view. I think I was too hasty and defensive. It’s such a vulnerable place to be as a mother of a college student. So much risk, so much potential.

These “adults” aren’t really all that mature, in my estimation. Perhaps our young people are growing up slowly in some ways and rapidly in others. My own daughter still has miles to go before she sleeps.

Do you think there is a male and female perspective in this at all?

Thank you for your (gentle) bluntness. :/

  14. Amy says:

    from the Hook article:

Inside the stolen patrol car are several empty 12-gauge ammunition boxes and spent 12-gauge shells, according to the report, which mentions additional expended ammunition recovered outside the car. In a case like this with 1 BG vs 7 LE I dont see any reloading happening.

This evidence clearly shows some kind of shootout while he was seated (sitting duck). Also as far as I can see the damage, bullet holes and even blood stains further point that it would be unlikely that he ever got out of the stolen cruiser alive.

Firing a handgun inside a car is close to suicide and a sure way to (temporary or permanent) eardamage at minimum. A shotgun? that times 2

that being said I do believe he stole a police car with intent to harm LE officers and was very irrational ad. armed. A very real threat. However, again it seems some puzzle parts are kept from us. Also there are shotguns with modified pistol grips.

I wonder if part of local LE problems is not due to their PR which seems to involve ‘ handling’ the public which in this day and age will always backfire. The truth will do just fine.

When you have 3 victims (x, fairfaxlady, Morgan) there must be a pattern. On the other hand part of me feels these things belong to the official investigation. This is were we should stop speculating to avoid smearing people s names.

Also here in the morning paper there was a huge frontpage article ‘ police officers reprimanded for working at music venues for security firms’

I thought: whats the big deal? After a lot of talk finally a police chief wrote: security work and LE work is so similar that there is a very real danger of conflict of interest.
For example if your employer is involved in a crime, where is your loyalty then?

Good to see some lively posting going on always impressed by the level of intelligence here on Morgans thread at BOC.
The anniversary of Morgans murder is fast approaching, it has forever changed this time of year for me and for so many of us. A tinge of bittersweet sadness as falls chill approaches. Morgan was stolen from her parents from her life from this earth at this time nearly two years ago. I still cry at times just thinking about it and imagining her sweet shiny smile. It is just to sad to truly imagine or to bear .One must make oneself imagine and remember and bear the terrible knowledge and grief and loss of it, if one is to honor this lovely young woman, daughter, sister , friend. and to see to it that potential victims are protected as much is possible. Like Blink says , most crimes are a crime of opportunity. remove the opportunity and help prevent
the crime.Lobby for more effective legislation like Gil and Dan Harrington have for familial DNA testing and currently Gil speaking out about Kathryns law pushing for rape and murger investigations on campus to be reported to and handled by the local police versus the UPD who have on many occasions swept things under the carpet and intimidated the victim or female student into silence.
Sorry in advance I had trouble copying and pasting the link but it’s on The Hook.

  20. Hummingbird says:

I am glad Blink brings our attention to these stories because someone needs to be watching what is really going on or we have become are becoming a nation of sleepwalkers or sheep and sadly the main targets of violence are women and children and the justice system is letting them down …it is too tragic…mothers know where your children are….

Tell your children to read “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin DeBecker (spelling?) to listen to their instincts and intuition, to use the “buddy system” to watch out for each other. When the justice system and the government cannot protect the people the people must step up and protect themselves and their communities, and I don’t necessarily mean packing a gun. I have such admiration for Dan and Gil Harrington for stepping up in the face of such unimaginable horror of losing their precious daughter to a violent predator. Violence is random and it exists. The Harringtons are working tirelessly to educate the public and help change legislation in order to protect future victims and to make their daughters tragic and senseless murder count for something positive in this world. Good versus evil …we have to stand up for what we believe in and that means keeping our eyes open. PEACE.

Blink ~ So glad to see so many here posting & commenting about Morgan’s case again. I became stuck for a while , not knowing what to believe ,what to think & wondering IF I believe as much now as I did a year ago that this would be solved soon . As far as believing this would be solved soon … that is a Negative answer now. NO I do not believe it will be solved soon . I Do believe that LE has the answers , but perhaps not all of the needed facts yet to tie this mess into a less messy & less convoluted pile of Many “coincidences” that are perhaps actually not coincidences at all.
Who said this first is a very brilliant person .. “In a criminal investigation , there is no such thing as a co-incidence.”

So if there’s no such thing as a co-incidence during a criminal investigation , what about a whole bunch of them ? Maybe a new way to throw everything off an investigation ? Maybe send the investigation in so many different directions early on so many other goings on were brought to light ?
I truly believe like I have seen some others post here that what is needed now is a person to begin to Investigate the Investigation. Maybe the FBI?

  33. CentVA Native Away says:

I’m guessing that there are fewer postings on here due to frustration and perhaps a collective opinion that LE has a pretty good idea who committed this crime, but are waiting for evidence and reliable testimony to rear its head; and, presumably, once the statute of limitations ends in less than one month.

I believe in casting a wide net and not taking anything for granted. I was traveling from S. VA to the Washington, DC area the other day and noticed a Maryland-based produce truck on 29N about 30 mins. south of Charlottesville. My family and I made a couple of stops, including one north of Charlottesville. When we were on route 66 East, I noticed that same truck and began to wonder what their distribution range must be. Obviously, it’s pretty wide given the two locations that I saw them. Another thing that I noticed was that they traveled in tandem. The reason that I believe this is relevant is that the victim in Fairfax made a statement that the man that she spoke to in the Giant store said he was waiting on a friend.

I don’t find it likely that this would be the case in Morgan’s case- a tandem delivery team abducted her and placed her on AF, but I think that it makes sense that someone in that type of transient industry with just enough knowledge of the area having customers that are not only high profile, but also those that are more “boutique”. Charlottesville is a high end market with both “town and country” establishments which would allow for even an out-of-town operation to be familiar with the city and its environs. I also realize that the area on AF where Morgan was placed is supposed to be very unique from a visibility standpoint, but it does not seem impossible- albeit difficult- to access from Red Hill Rd.

I think that the proximity of both of these crimes to grocers needs to be looked at more closely. It may be just coincidence, but that can not be taken for granted as nothing can until this case is solved.

  34. Hummingbird says:

Good point CentVAnativeaway. I also think the proximity of both attacks to grocery stores
    maybe relevant.
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of Morgan …sigh.
I so want this beautiful girl to have justice and her killer/killers taken off the streets!!
    J4M.

  35. Josie says:

I agree CentVAnative and Hummingbird. It’s my opinion and has been for some time, if the Fairfax/Charlottesville connection can be made, then the Anchorage Farm connection would be established and likely lead right to Sketch’s door or family door.

I suppose that no matches have been hit on with the famililial DNA. Or at least we haven’t heard of any. That’s trully a disappointment.

My thoughts are still, and will remain, with Morgan’s family. And I’ll never give up on some kind of justice for Morgan. Although, IMO there can be no justice for such a cruel act that takes an innocent life from their family. Judgement helps, but this family will never have justice, because their precious daughter and sister is gone from them. My love to Dan, Gil and Alex. We’ll never forget and we’ll never give up.

I don’t disagree with anyone’s theories, err uh, theoretically, including Ginger’s. As a matter of fact, I’d like for her to expand on her vision or dream if it’s not too abstract to do so. I think it’s interesting, particularly since there is a baseball connection given that we know D. Cassagne traveled (drove?) to the concert with Morgan. I was wondering long before if someone peripheral to him had contact with Morgan before/after she exited JPJA.

As you say, however, there are 1000s of plausible scenarios. I’ll keep beating my head against the wall until the right one sticks.

No offense, but I am not having the bible code stuff on here, yes, it is too abstract.

There is a tie, a DNA link to Morgan’s murderer to a man that is not a co-ed. He has raped before, and imo, there are attacks we do not know about, and possibly worse.

He is likely a substance abuser, and under that set of circumstances I think folks know pretty quickly something is off about him, he is not blending, so to speak.

if this is someone from a security job,at the arena, he should be caught already, his employer ,the people he works with, and the cops could easily figure out which security guard had the opportunity, and odd behavior, the cops can do dna gathering and testing on the sly, easily on a suspected guard, they would have easy access to this person.you would think le would be aggressive about catching a rogue security worker,. so ,he is le or is really close friends with le ,if he was working the arena and they havent got him yet.or he was security that traveled with the bands, and le does not have easy access to this person and their employ.

I use the phrase ‘beating my head up against the wall’ too liberally. It’s a common sentiment after having worked in ad. sales f or a good stint. Knocking door to door for answers in Morgan’s case is a labor of love. There really is something special and haunting about her case.

You are so very cryptic in your bolder responses.

I don’t know what you know or what you don’t know.

    IMO
There are a couple of big hurdles LE is facing that they aren’t telling us about.

Without knowing those, I hate to say it- but I feel kinda helpless.

    Summary:
•No one knows why she left the arena
•no one saw her get into a car. They saw her with her thumb out, went into a gas station, came out and she wasn’t there anymore. (that we’ve been told)
•there’s supposedly no video of her at the arena (I still call BS on that)
•her purse and cell phone were found a pretty good distance away from where she was said to be seen the last
    •the phone sans battery
    •but her camera wasn’t left.
•••••could she have lost it before hand?
•her tshirt was left in a “taunting” fashion on a bush near the campus
    •••••wtf?
•her remains were found in a secluded area of a farm that someone would have had to know well and not suspect being connected to
•the killers DNA matches a cold rape case from 2005 in FFX
•there’s a sketch but no one in the area says they know anyone looking like him

    What are we missing?

Blink- it’s been almost two years. There’s not a gag order. Just sayin

  46. deetee says:

ok, i’m just going to ask.

has rod howard been questioned by LE in connection with this case? seems like he should definitely be on LE’s radar, and near the top of the list of persons of interest, given all the information that is easily available to the public on the internet.

i also wonder if any witnesses have been shown his photo? i’d have to guess the answer is no on this, since we have heard that there are witnesses that had not been shown the sketch.

i don’t know how some people involved in the this investigation sleep at night.

  47. Amy says:

going with the LE/security link, this is all theoretical so I hope noone feels accused:

-One of Morgan s friends had a direct link (family) to LE, could she have alerted them and asked someone to help? If not why not?
-If so did this help turn out disastrous?
-If not why did the friends think it was okay? Did Morgan have links with LE or security or other ‘protectors’. Her behavior suggests risk avoiding behavior not hitchhiking to get killed behavior its very strange.
-Can we link (Fairfax), JPJ, the Wild Wings cafe AND AF to 1 certain security firm? Do they protect grocery stores and residences as part of their business profile? Does this residence include AF?
-As a result of AF hanky panky as well as the Colby shooting certain officers have been suspended (?) can they individually be linked to this certain private security firm?
-Could Sketch DNA be obtained from an evidence locker and planted to divert attention from the real killers? Did someone within local LE do an unusual amount of research on Sketch or other unsolved rape cases in the months following Morgans disappearance?
-Could the Sheriff who was known for 1 thing (unwavering in his goal for firm justice) be an obstacle? (HIGHLY SPECULATIVE WARNING)

Finally something that could be rumor or fact, it nags me cause I could never find the quote again (should link the sources) but..

-Was AF or surroundings searched unoficially before Morgan was found? prompting panic/ a planting of the tshirt. i think only a local can answer this.

These are all the questions I can think of and again hardly anything new or can be answered by us.

Regarding your questions, I believe that RH creates a conflict of interest for those that are involved in this case and they are approaching any such pursuit of him as gingerly as possible given a number of factors: his relationship with UVA, a Commonwealth of VA entity; his ethnicity; and, the statute of limitations. Regardless of what anyone would like to assert, this crime ORIGINATED on the “grounds”(why isn’t it just a campus? sorry, had to say it) of the University of Virginia. I believe that those factors make this case all the more complex, sadly. However, someone with some integrity needs to step up and take into account the safety of young women, not only in the Charlottesville area, but perhaps throughout the mid-Atlantic. This case needs to be solved and we need to move beyond the politics of this case.

If you are looking for someone with a knowledge of the roads around the JPJ Arena and around the seedy area near campus where the t-shirt was found as well as a knowledge of the AF/Blandemar farms area then you would have to include law enforcement personnel, perhaps someone working the show off-duty. Or maybe it was a rent-a-cop with a lot of dirt on real LE members? For some reason LE stopped providing real info to the public even before the poor girl was found.

When you add in the unbelievably opaque statements by LE regarding the recorded video inside and outside the arena all kinds of bells and whistles go off (at least in my brain).

I will say it took a lot of nerve to plant the t-shirt. Maybe some forensic psychologist can shed some light on that move?

In the back of my mind also is the question of who would have access to “Sketch’s” DNA in Fairfax County.

New poster here (been following case from beginning though) and I am just wondering if anyone else saw the episode of 20/20 about Inna Budnytska, the Ukranian woman attacked and left for dead near the Miami airport? No connection between the cases really (other than a possible perp with ties to the service industry? who knows), but since watching the 20/20 episode a few months ago recounting the efforts of Ken Brennan, the PI who finally cracked the case, it is now ALL I can think of as I consider Morgan’s case. Just like with Inna’s case, the events of Oct. 17 are opaque, elusive, and convoluted, full of SEEMING dead ends, but the truth is there just WAITING to be unraveled; all it takes is someone as skilled and tireless as Ken Brennan. It makes me really wonder whether the Harringtons have hired a PI, and if not, why? Where is Morgan’s Ken Brennan?

I am VERY familiar with this case, and we dissected it early because it has such similarities.

Welcome peace, and I agree with you, this case needs a Ken Brennan, but it needs an agency willing to have one as well.
