Murder In Mexico: Tiffany Hartley Endures 16 Hours Of Interviews In David Hartley Death

Tiffany Hartley emerged on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 yesterday after her 16th hour of interviews at the Mexican Consulate in McAllen, Texas.

Hartley recounted the events of September 30, ending with the alleged murder of her husband David. Ms. Hartley gave both new testimony and confirmed her previous statements according to reports from the Mexican Attorney General and Ms. Hartley herself, without the presence of an attorney.

According to several statements from Hartley, David was shot “off his jet ski” while the couple was returning from the Mexican side of Falcon Lake, where they briefly took pictures of the historic church on Old Guerrerro. Neither David Hartley nor his Sea Doo watercraft have been recovered.

One of the most baffling aspect of the case, is the fact that Ms. Hartley claims the pair were shot at at as they were driving their jet skis away from alleged “pirates” they both waved a friendly hello to, seconds before.  Tiffany Hartley was uninjured in the attack, and her jet ski was not hit in the gunfire. Although media was alerted last week that tests on a possible blood source on Tiffany’s life vest were due back that afternoon, we were quickly told there would be no updates about the possible blood evidence at this time.

This afternoon, blinkoncrime Editor spoke with Chuck Smith, owner Smith Marina USA about specifics of the Sea Doo RXT.

..Your correct, the RXT has a chip in the starter that is electronically programmed to “match” the owners lanyard key. If he was wearing the lanyard, whether attached to his vest, or in some cases the arm, and he was thrown off the ski, it activates a kill switch and will not start without the key it is programmed to without a factory reprogramming, which of course, one would need the paperwork for. In short, no matter what, they would need his key to start it.

Blink Question: What if he was not attached to the key, and he was shot and flew off the unit “in motion”, this would not shut the engine off, correct?

CS: Correct. The ski would continue in the direction the handlebars were pointing and continue to throttle in that direction.

Blink: How hard are these models to sink?

CS: Virtually impossible. I have never actually heard of, or seen one, sink to the bottom. The way the Coast Guard standards are now with these, they have hulls similar to boats.

Blink: Could enough bullet holes sink it? What about if the contiuum– could that have caused it to flip? Could anyone right it?

CS: No, not unless we are talking morter rounds. I guess in theory an automatic weapon could put enough holes cut it in half if that was the goal, but again, your still going to see shards of fiberglass all over the water, remnants similar to a boat accident or crash. Again, under these circumstances, I don’t see how he could flip it, but if it were, again, harder to see because the bottom is black, but any SAR or Coast Guard deployment knows what abnormalities to look for on the water surface. It would be next to impossible to “right it” in deep water. It would be more likely they would drag it to shallow water.

Blink: Is this chop-shoppable?

CS: Absolutely. There is some after factory devices, similar to lo jack, but the engine and parts are expensive and could easily be sold that way.

Blink: He was wearing a PFD I. In your opinion is that keeping him afloat until he is located if he was left in the water?

CS: Absolutely, unless it was removed, or he and the vest were removed from the water, he would be floating, yes.

As announced this morning on Dana Pretzer commentary, Blink, Editor In Chief of blinkoncrime.com will be discussing the Hartley case this evening live at 9PM EST on Scared Monkeys The Dana Pretzer Show.

So bullets would cause the hull to shatter because it is fiberglass? Interesting… millions of tiny pieces of fiberglass floating on top of the water would have been impossible to clean up and obvious to searchers.
That backs up position that whatever happened happened on the shore. (Tiffany got away because she didn’t go ashore. JMO)

Just a thought. Did they know when gas was put in the skis,… receipts? I hope they looked to see how much gas was left in TH ski. How far can you ride a jet ski of that type. You could top off one ski and leave enough for the other to get back. Did they visit any areas that the ski could get to on a full tank. Maybe on the cruise. Have they checked the areas they visited in the last say 6 months. When I think of the issue of violence in the area, it may have been used as a smoke screen. There is no denying it is there. My husband has been fishing on the bass lake where the Portland man fishing was shot in the head. This was several years ago and he said that they had a military guard on the dock. I was born in NM and it is the most wonderful place. I hope to retire there. I have been to Mexico so many times I can not count. My honeymoon was in Acapulco. I have driven up cliffs in Mexico and eaten at places you can not believe anyone knows even exist . The menu is the actual meal you choose to have cooked. Nothing but beyond fabulous. I would not go to Mexico now. I believe the issues on the border are a major concern for our country. But if this turns out to be a fabrication it will only fair poorly on the border issue. I do not think you should take a true issue and use it for greed. A poly would help to put that somewhat to rest. She has time for more interviews than any victim I can think of. She should have time for a poly. I will admit I want to believe her if only because I do think she seems likeable, he looks fun, friendly and like someone I know and love, a big Teddy Bear.
Blink I look forward to hearing what you have to say tonight.

Fantastic info Blink! Can’t wait for the podcast. I agree w/ the posts from the previous thread and Cricket above, he was on shore when he was killed, this confirms that in my mind. Is there an area he could have pulled his ski up to, shallow water? She waited on her ski and fled when things got ugly? I wonder at what point she retained counsel, just before the meetings or before?

I don’t know what to think regarding this “missing” man. But, I appreciate your sound search of information. After reading your latest I wonder if “someone” could have jumped on his jet ski…Anyway, good additional questions for his wife…did you both have their lanyard keys on them?; was his jet ski idling when she turned back to help him?

I can only say that in the pics I have seen of David on his jetski, his lanyard was not attached.

Your right, I sincerely hope these questions have been asked.

Apropos the SM radio broadcast (cuz I haven’t read this article yet…but will shortly)

No heat from me, B; I too think that it appears that the Mexican officials having taken this alleged murder far more seriously than US officials. Sure, the local sheriff has thrown his, “opinions” into the mix, as well as a couple of politicians soon facing election. But that’s it. And there has been no report from media that anyone in LE has been intimately involved, except for the sheriff. And on top of the US law enforcement approach, the American media has engaged what I would call a, “courtship” of Tiffany Young Hartley.
Now, that said, let’s compare this to the Kyron Horman case –Multnomah County Sheriffs, and from the get-go, have been careful and guarded with investigative information and evidence relating to his disappearance. From the second they learned of a missing person (albeit for a child, it will kick in earlier than for an adult), they immediately kicked in and took action, and their actions were made public. Never once did Governor Kulongoski issue a bunch of public statements about his disappearance.
I do not believe that the US LE are taking this alleged murder seriously at all. It feels as if they are just chalking it up to more cartel violence, and that will not bring justice for David Hartley.

  9. lily says:

Whether David’s lanyard was attached or not – the jet ski would have pretty quickly decelerated either by the key being yanked out – or by him no longer applying the throttle. I do not see how he could have done anything closely resembling “flying” off the jet ski because either way he would have just slumped off to the side if he were hit by a fatal gunshot wound. When you stop applying throttle -it is a fairly quick deceleration – not like a car because there is resistance with the water.

The questions would be: Tiffany turned around and drifted her jet ski to where David was “floating” in the water because his life vest would have kept him afloat so did she:

    1) drift slowly so as not to hit him? because jet skis – when you’re not adding some speed and throttle are very difficult to control
    2) how did she precisely maneuver to David floating in the water, slide off of her jet ski (while hanging on to it so it wouldn’t float away) and make her way to her husband (presumably floating on his back based upon his life vest rating)? Wouldn’t this take some time, effort and tremendous skill?
    3) Seriously, how long would it take for Tiffany to carefully make her way back to David, slide off of her jet ski into the water that would presumably be filled with blood from David’s horrendous wound, turn him over, beg him to tell her what to do, hear a message from God, climb back on her own jet ski in deep water (not easy), put her lanyard back in and zoom away? Seriously?
    4) If these guys were that close to her – the only answer is that they voluntarily let her go. But then if that is true – then why would they fire their guns at her (bullets coming at her) while she rushes PAST 3 boats of them in order to get back into US territory? Really?
    5) Where are the forensics results of Tiffany’s life vest that was supposed to be the “be all and end all” of all of this speculation and doubt of the “story”? Where? She was floating in what anybody could imagine would be blood mixed with lake water all the while struggling in a heroic effort to muscle her 250 pound husband mortally wounded with a bullet to the head or the neck or wherever – and there is no blood evidence? Are you kidding me?
    6) Where are all of those with political agendas that were at the beginning on their platforms adamant that this was a political hot potato and that our President and Secretary of State needed to “do something” immediately? Don’t you think they’ve been “advised” by people “in the know” by now to shut their yaps because they’re going to look like fools if they don’t? It’s been awfully quiet.

We deserve to know if David is A) really deceased B) if he is deceased – who killed him and C) was this case not processed correctly due to law enforcement, political or racial bias – and if so – who is responsible for creating an environment where the case can never fully be resolved or prosecuted? I want to know the truth.

    Excellent follow up Questions.

There are times in this case where I feel like someone is playing a joke on me, or I am in a live but hidden skills assessment experiment. I look around my office more. I say aloud, are you effing with me? I am six sigma, this is not the statistical likelihood of a missed putt.

The totality of improbablities in this account are staggering. What is the truth is right.

Damn I guess I could have started my comment with – GREAT SHOW BLINK! I got caught up in the moment after listening to it on iTunes. I’d really love to hear more of your perception of the sudden “black out” on Sigi’s smack talk about the blood speck on the life vest, the 14-16 hours that TH has spent with FBI and Mexican law enforcement – and who knows what other agencies? If this were a simple, low level, drug cartel screw up or whatever then why all of these resources?

I think Sheriff Gonzalez is way out of his league on this one. I say that with respect, his job is un-enviable.

If David Hartley’s naked to the human eye, blood swipe ( which btw if we buy her acct is the only thing it could be, unless it is on the rear of her vest, as she was in front of him) was his, does anyone really believe Sigi is not calling a pressconf?

  12. A Texas Grandfather says:

There were choppers up from the Mexicans as well as the U.S. and we don’t have any information as to their finding evidence of a body or a jet ski. I said at the beginning that this plot is about as likley as a “B” movie.

The military has placed a preadator or two up to scan sections of the border. It would not take long for one of those aircraft to move over Falcon lake and take video of the area.

David may indeed be deceased, but not as she is describing.

Great point ATG, but the lake is such in spanse that it would be unneccessary based on current equipment capabilities and loads. The Coast Guard has state of the art thermogenic aerials that would span that that lake in one pass.
    B

All I want to see at this point, is the chain of evidence logs from the second that girl hit the “witness” through the time same was reported to Mexican Authorities.

  13. Madilu says:

What is a mountie? And no one will tell me what SIL acronym means either…

On another note -no, “mortar rounds” were ever spoken of in Tiffany’s, “story”….so the jet ski should not have sunk. She says she saw 2 bullets next to her, and pointed square in the middle of the forehead, between the eyes, as to the point he was shot. She indicated what one would equate with, “execution style shooting” -not a fast-paced, water chasing shooting.

I used to be a competitive windsurfer; I was pretty fast, but not nearly as fast as a jet ski…If I were sailing away quickly from gunfire, (or merely a sea turtle, barge, or SHARK) there is no way that I would be able to discern 1 or 10 or 50 shots fired next to me in my wake (yeah, I was that fast…lol) The adrenaline is just too much. Last thing on your mind.

Based on the Sea Doo rep technical information, one of the biggest impossibilities to me in this, “story” is that if he were shot in the forehead, while being chased from behind…and TYH looked over her shoulder to see him, “flying off the ski” -but did not mention it charging forward full throttle… ummmm…yet pointed her finger to a spot on the forehead…and then the ski just vanishing…just so many impossibilities to count.

Yes, I agree that one needs to look at the totality of the impossibilities, as well as the demeanor and behavior of the survivor.

Poor David -even if he is just guilty of poor judgment, he seemed like a sweet man, and a hard worker.

I continue to question why Sheriff Gonzalez is questioned, interviewed, and used as someone “in the know.” The alleged crime happened on FALCON LAKE, which is in every way, US government land, managed by the National Park Service. The Sheriff’s office has NO jurisdiction whatsoever, and I have serious doubts that the DEA, ATF, FBI, Border Patrol, and such are talking to the podunk sheriff’s office—especially a Sheriff’s office that is well known for having it’s own political agenda concerning crime on the border.

We have no body. We have no jet ski. We have no weapon. We have a witness (and I use the term very loosely here) who can’t seem to recall what she saw—it changes every time she tells the story.

Note to self: If I ever decide to participate in criminal activity, and then lie about it—make sure to write down the details of the original lie so as not to look like an idiot every time I open my mouth. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Funny you should say that -if you go back to the VERY FIRST several interviews, she constantly stopped, stuttered and corrected herself, as if she were trying to remember the, “script” correctly. My first instinct was and is, “ooops, she got her lines wrong -again…”

The reason for her seemingly rehearsed script still lurks in my mind heavily…let alone so many more of the techincal aspects.

    Speaking of which:

Lily— You brought up some EXCELLENT points. I know as a windsurfer that when I ‘drop’ in the water, to reach another windsurfer in need, or swim out of a big coral/wave area -I MUST hold onto my rig, and also toggle/tread with one hand through the water while kicking like mad -it is VERY EXHAUSTING and TRICKY to keep hold of my rig, AND tread over to wherever I need to be –and I was even a competitive swimmer from age 5 to 18

Just sayin’ great points you made. I FEEL what you are saying -been there, done that -many times. It sucks! Many times, especially trying to dodge huge waves, I have felt that adrenaline and actually thought I WOULD DIE. She never mentioned any emotions or details of such… It is like she pictured it in her mind/rehearsed it, said it, but never actually experienced it. It’s pretty scary in open water with a big rig, violence AND a 250lb hubby. Oh, and btw, a windsurf rig is much easier to manage in that situation than a huge Sea Doo!

It’s one thing to mention that David was too heavy -but NEVER a mention of the water, the rolling wake/waves/exhaustion from kicking/swimming -all that would be in play in a big lake like that. Hope I am making sense.

I wonder if anyone has found out how strong of a swimmer she is. Like I said, even the best of swimmers (like I USED to be) -it’s HARD as HELL to pull the described scenario off, …and I am surprised I did not think of that aspect of it, Lily! I must be getting old…Thanks!

  22. Madilu says:

I do know what a mountie is, but for some reason was thinking Mounty Python…Full Mounty…(just teasin’) –But as B can be cryptic at times, I had no idea she was being literal!!!

And, I am pleased to say that I have never watched a Jersey Shore episode, but have watched a number of Housewives of Orange County episodes -same thing, right? And given that B could not leave the room for half hour could mean that she secretly wants to be Snooki… Let’s blink on it and talk tomarra.

  26. JEN says:

Madilu, that’s a fantastic point regarding the rolling waves/choppy water effects. For comparison’s sake, I thought back to a snorkeling trip with my son, who was 7 at the time. He got saltwater in his mask and decided immediately that snorkeling was not for him. I ended up half-swimming, half-carrying him back to the boat, maybe 30 feet away, and I can remember very clearly how difficult it was. There was a 70-pound weight difference between my son and I – much less than Tiff and David. If I was exhausted after such a short haul through the waves, I can’t imagine why Tiffany wouldn’t have mentioned them, either.

Also, depending on the wind, current, other vehicles on the water, etc, wouldn’t waves actually block your line of vision if you’re on the “trough” side? (I know that’s not the technical term. Sorry, I don’t know ‘sea-speak’!) *JEN blushes furiously*

Are there enough pressures/incentive for the US LE, FBI, DEA, etc., to fully investigate this?

  33. Elizabeth says:

Me thinks Miss Tiffany has become addicted to the media spotlight and can’t get enough of it.

If she was to play her cards right she would shut the hell up and go quietly home. Wait the 7 years and collect the money.

I wonder, did she ever do the re-enactment on the lake that the Mexican authorities asked her to do? Did she ever take a poly? Excuse me but wasn’t she the last person, like Terri Horman, to have been with him before he disappeared? Why didn’t LE polygraph her? Perhaps she’s afraid that, if she sticks around much longer, she will have to do those things. I hope they keep tabs on her in Colorado. I’d love to know how she’ll be spending her time.

Me thinks Miss Tiffany has become addicted to the media spotlight and can’t get enough of it.

If she was to play her cards right she would shut the hell up and go quietly home. Wait the 7 years and collect the money.

She might just talk herself into some jail time.

I am very sure she has a great book inside her and a movie in the works.

Shut up Tiffany. Good things are on the horizone. This is God speaking!

Am I the only one it to which it seems extremely strange? Her husband is “brutally killed,” but no body is found, and she’s already going to Colorado—only three weeks after the crime?

I mean, maybe after a year, heck, maybe even six months—-but it hasn’t even been a month???

I wonder if God sounds like George Burns to TH.

Ok, I don’t care who you are, that is funny.

Per previous conversations about David’s personal facebook page….his high school is listed as Thompson Valley High School. Looking at the posts on the high school page, the earliest post I can view is September 30 at 8:40pm. Am I reading/analizing that correctly? Page looks a bit different than most group pages. (Page seems to have some sort of a relationship with Wikipedia?)

If so…isn’t it hinky that David would be a member? Did TH add it to his profile on the same evening he died? (then deleted the info off his wall that showed the maintence?) How long was she at the Sheriff’s office that day?

    Ode – LOL! I loved George Burns…

I could also picture Morgan Freeman – but I somehow think that isn’t exactly the image Tiffany gets when she prays to God that her “story” doesn’t unravel.

A jet ski does make an unbelievable amount of noise. I lived right on a lake for 6 years and remember it well. My neighbor had two jet skis and I rode them a good bit but never did I use a lanyard attached to the ignition or anything else. It’s been a few years since then but I think when you stop giving them gas they stop moving pretty quick. It is like any other type of boat motor. They don’t have brakes. The “brake” is when you stop pushing the throttle.

CORRECTION: Not saying that she created the school page or added him that same day….just saying! Thinking maybe the Facebook Servers need an audit by the FBI!

You might be onto something, she may be the Long Ranger.

This is the only case, ever, (I can remember) no phone number has

been given, as how to contact LE with a tip, no nothing, because, she

does not want information given, just the Body.
