(Update 10:00AM EST Susan Powell’s children are in protective custody with Pierce County Child Services)

Pullyallup, WA- You knew it was coming.   Steven Powell,  unaffectionately dubbed Freak-in-law by www.blinkoncrime.com,  was arrested yesterday after child porn and non-consensual hidden video and media files were found during the most recent search of his home by search warrant,  related to the West Valley investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell.

Powell is facing charges for possession of thousands of  sexually explicit images and videotape of both minors and adult women apparently many appear to have been taken without their knowledge in the Powell home.

Pierce County prosecutors say among those images, are some of Susan Powell.   Steve Powell, 61 was taken into custody late Thursday on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of depiction of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.   It is believed the material was taped between 2006 and 2007 and may include Powell’s neighbors.

Pierce County prosecutors have not ruled out future additional charges.

Steven Powell, father of Joshua Powell, a person of interest in his wife Susan’s disappearance and all around dolt, was not seen fleeing the home in a midnight camping trip.

West Valley Police are referring all calls regarding the elder Powell’s arrest to the Pierce County Sheriff’s office and stress his case is unrelated to the ongoing investigation of Susan Powell’s whereabouts.

It is not known if as a result of Steve Powell’s arrest, Pierce County Child Services will be called to insure the safety and care of the two young Powell children, Charlie and Braden, as they spent a great deal of time with their 61 year old Grandperv  (hint to Chuck Cox).

(Editors Note: Who did not see that coming with the whole “flirtatious relationship” BS- this dude is a seriously sick f*ck. If you had any doubt, read this- a John Jay undergrad could profile this guy in 2 pages )

Steven Powell voyeurism jury trial set for Nov. 16

SEATTLE — A Nov. 16 jury trial has been scheduled for the father-in-law of Susan Cox Powell, the West Valley mother who has been missing for nearly two years.Steven Powell is facing charges of possession of child pornography and 14 counts of voyeurism.

Days after his arrest, Judge Kathryn Nelson ordered that Susan and Josh Powell’s two boys be removed from the home where they were living with their father and grandfather, Steven Powell. She said there was a “serious threat of substantial harm” if the Powell boys, ages 4 and 6, were allowed to return to the home of Josh and Steven Powell. Another court hearing on that matter is scheduled for Nov. 15.

Earlier this year, Josh Powell filed a restraining order against his father-in-law claiming that Cox was threatening him. In August, a judge denied the petition saying nothing in it rose to the level of domestic violence.

The judge did, however, issue an anti-harassment order “to keep the peace,” telling both sides to stay at least 500 feet away from each other.

According to court documents, Josh Powell has asked that the 500 feet order be re-continued “after placement of minor children terminates.” Because the initial order prohibited Cox from coming within 500 feet of the school of one of Josh Powell’s sons, the restraining order had to be amended after the Cox family was awarded temporary custody of their grandchildren so they could take him to school.

Also filed in court this week were certificates showing that Chuck and Judy Cox completed a seminar on the “Impact of Divorce on Children” in January 2010 in Washington.

Attorney for Steve Powell makes appearance in voyeurism case

The father-in-law of missing West Valley City mother Susan Powell now has an attorney to represent him in the voyeurism and pornography case against him.

Documents filed in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma, Wash., show Steve Powell will be represented by Tacoma attorney Mark T. Quigley. Quigley, an attorney with the Pierce County Department of Assigned Counsel, appeared in court Tuesday, where the next court date was scheduled for Oct. 27. A Nov. 16 trial date was set.

Michael R. Kawamura of the Pierce County Dept. of Assigned Counsel represented Powell during his initial court appearance.

Steve Powell has declined jailhouse interview requests from The Salt Lake Tribune. He is currently in the county’s main jail and, with the exception of his attorney, is allowed to meet with visitors for only one hour a week.

Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, said at the time Powell was charged that Pierce County investigators had reviewed only 5 to 10 percent of the computers, photographs and videos seized from Powell’s home on Aug. 25.

Troyer said on Oct. 10 that police are continuing to sift through evidence and that more charges against Powell are possible.

“We have not brought anything else forward to the prosecutor’s office yet. We are continuing to work on it,” Troyer said.

Josh Powell’s mom: ‘Josh is a loving and very engaged father’

The mother of Josh Powell has broken her silence, calling her son a “loving and very engaged father” as a custody dispute over his two young sons continues to play out in the Washington legal system.

In a declaration filed recently in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma, Wash., Terrica Powell called her grandsons Charlie, 6, and Braden, 4, “happy, well-adjusted and vibrant children … even though they miss their mother.”

The court document is the first time Terrica Powell, 56, has commented about her son in a public venue since the December 2009 disappearance of his wife, Susan, from the couple’s West Valley City home.

“Josh has long maintained a tradition of frequent activities with the kids, such as going to the zoo, or to the park to feed the ducks, or to the museum, or to Lowe’s for the little building projects they offer for kids,” Terrica Powell wrote. “In addition, I have been impressed with the extra level of care Josh takes in teaching his little boys about how things work, such as when he built a new deck for their home: He delightedly let the boys be involved in a way and at a level that was interesting and safe for them. Other examples include studying animals or learning about science together.

“I have been relieved and pleased to note how very well Charlie and Braden are doing, despite the trauma and sadness of missing their beloved mother. They seem to be continuing to thrive.”

In a declaration Josh Powell, 35, filed with the court, he asked for his sons to be returned to him.

“My sons love me and I love them. There is nothing unsafe in our household,” he wrote.

“My father was recently removed from our home and charged with crimes. The recent chain of events within our family household was totally unexpected despite what the media has represented. There was no visible sign of threat to my sons. Nevertheless, I have taken and will continue to take every step possible to mitigate any future potential threat to the well-being of my sons.”

Terrica Powell’s comments in support of Josh Powell are a stark contrast to those made by her daughter, Jennifer Graves, with whom Terrica Powell resides in West Jordan.

Graves filed a declaration in support of the boys staying with the Coxes, writing that she had recently visited her nephews following their placement with their maternal grandparents. Graves and her husband, Kirk, have said they believe Josh Powell is connected to his wife’s disappearance.

Jennifer Graves has also said she was not surprised by her father’s arrest. She claimed that Steve Powell made sexual advances toward his daughter-in-law and said her father had a pornography addiction that he exposed his own children to while they were growing up in Washington.

The boys, Graves wrote, are happy in the custody of the Coxes.

Josh Powell’s mother breaks silence in court documents

WEST VALLEY CITY — The mother of Josh Powell has broken her silence and says her son is a “loving and very engaged father in the care of his sons.”

Terri Powell said most of her contact with her grandsons since Josh moved back to Puyallup, Wash., has been by phone.

“I have talked with the boys themselves. They’ve sounded like normal, happy children, excited to tell me whatever their current interest or project is,” she wrote in court documents.

She said the home atmosphere at Josh Powell’s house has seemed “supportive and calm.” Terri Powell said Josh takes extra care in teaching the boys how different things work.

“I have been relieved and pleased to note how very well (the boys) are doing, despite the trauma and sadness of missing their beloved mother. They seem to be continuing to thrive,” she wrote.

Terri Powell concluded her comments by saying, “It is very apparent that (the boys) love their dad and that he loves them.”

His mother’s letter is one of eight that Josh Powell attached in his response to a motion by Chuck Cox, Susan Powell’s father, to retain custody of his grandsons. Other letters are from Josh Powell’s sister, brothers and family friends.

Josh Powell said he provides a “stable” home for his sons and their lives are one of a “normal loving family.”

He admitted, in court documents, that since his wife’s disappearance, his relationship with Chuck and Judy Cox has been “very complicated” and “highly emotional.”

Both children voiced, ‘My daddy said that (Chuck) was mean.’ Chuck answered back, ‘Do you think I’m mean?’ The children responded, ‘No.’
    –Judy Cox

All of the letters submitted on behalf of Josh Powell talk about him being a loving, caring father. Letters submitted by family members also took issue with Jennifer Graves, Josh’s sister who has been estranged from the Powell family for several years and has criticized both Steven and Josh Powell in interviews. Alina Powell referred to Jennifer in her letter as her “former” sister.

In other recently released court documents filed by Judy Cox, she noted that when the boys spent the night at her house on Sept. 27, when she and Chuck Cox received temporary custody, she said the boys told their grandparents that they were “mean.”

“Both children voiced, ‘My daddy said that you,’ meaning Chuck, ‘was mean.’ Chuck answered back, ‘Do you think I’m mean?’ The children responded, ‘No,’” she wrote in court documents.

Mom says Josh Powell is a good father

Terri Powell also singles out praise for her adult daughter, Alina. She wrote that Alina has been filling the void left by the boy’s missing mother, “She has lovingly and kindly cared for the kids when Josh is at work.”

Still, Terri admits she had had limited contact with Josh and the boys in the last couple years.

“Except for a brief personal visit with them last year,” Terri wrote, “My contact with them since they moved to Washington has been by phone.”

Terri Powell is divorced from Steve Powell for several years and is living with her daughter Jennifer Graves in West Jordan.

The declaration is a striking contrast to what Jennifer Graves has said. Jennifer has repeatedly stated she believes her brother, Josh, is responsible for his Susan’s disappearance.

In response to her mother’s statement, Jennifer Graves said only, “Any comments my mom made in support of Josh’s parenting abilities are her opinions.”

Terri Powell’s declaration will be considered by a Washington state judge next month when the custody battle over the two boys resume next month. For now, the court has allowed Charlie and Braden to stay with their maternal grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox.

One of Warren Jeff’s 70 ‘wives’ flees polygamist enclave

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A woman reported to be one of jailed polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs’ many wives has fled the insular community along the Utah-Arizona border, a move that could mean her excommunication from the group and severed ties from all friends and family.

Media outlets including the Salt Lake Tribune report the woman who fled the church on Monday was one of Jeffs’ nearly 70 wives. Authorities had not released the woman’s identity and Washington County sheriff’s Detective Nate Abbott said he didn’t know whether she was married to Jeffs.

The 25-year-old woman fled a Colorado City home and sought help from former church spokesman Willie Jessop, Abbott said.

Jessop, who has denounced Jeffs, told The Associated Press he then contacted authorities, but he declined to provide details.

“She came to me under duress for some help,” Jessop said Wednesday. “We’ve got her help. She’s deciding what she wants to do and how we can help facilitate that. One hundred percent of the focus now is on whatever is in her best interests.”

Officers from both the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado City Town Marshal’s office responded to the “keep the peace” call, but there “was no confrontation,” Abbott said.

Susan Powell’s 30th Birthday is bittersweet

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) -It is a bittersweet day for the loved ones of missing mother Susan Powell. They are honoring Susan on her 30th birthday, although the guest of honor is no where to be found.

Susan Powell’s family and friends gathered Sunday in a Puyallup, Washington park to release balloons. Photos of Susan and information about her disappearance were tied to each. As they drift away, hope lingers that someone, who knows something, will come forward.

Susan’s parents were not in the park Sunday. Their absence was reportedly the result of legal concerns, and a need for privacy. They now have temporary custody of Susan and Josh Powell’s two sons. On Susan’s 30th, it’s was her sister, Denis Cox, who honored Susan with childhood memories. “You just take it for granted that they’re always going to be there and seeing these pictures and going through my photo albums, and seeing pictures of Christmas’ and holidays we spent together, it was you know, you just can’t take anything for granted.”

Balloon launch memorializes 30th birthday of Susan Cox Powell

West Valley City • Against a sunny and hopeful October sky, a cluster of more than 250 purple balloons lifted into the breeze in memory of Susan Cox Powell, the mother who mysteriously disappeared into the night nearly two years ago.

On Saturday, West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder along with a group of at least 30 people gathered at West View Park 4100 S. 6000 W. to remember Powell for a birthday celebration — she would have been 30 years old on Sunday.

Even though much of the recent attention has been on Susan’s father-in-law Steve Powell, who is in jail on pornography and voyeurism charges, her husband Josh Powell and a family custody battle over the children, one thing hasn’t changed — the focus has always been on finding Susan, says event organizer Kiirsi Hellewell.

Hellewell, Susan’s best friend, said the purpose of remembering her birthday is to bring the attention back to remembering the missing woman.

She does an excellent job of profiling this type of perp, covering the
Scott Peterson case in great detail, and many others.
    From the review –

“In her exhaustively researched account of the Scott Peterson trial and similar cases, journalist Strong (A Bright Red Scream) makes a convincing case that there is a growing number of men—whom she calls eraser killers—who murder their wives or girlfriends with premeditation and dispose of the body in an attempt to make both the crime and the victim disappear. They kill, says Strong, because the woman no longer serves any ‘purpose’ in the man’s emotionally desolate world, or because he sees her as an obstacle to a life he fantasizes for himself.”

This book reads like a script of the Susan Powell case, and the
emotionally void Josh who killed her. As did Peterson, Powell chose
Christmas to make his wife “disappear”.

    Sherlock

Agreed, I have read this book, it is midline for people with vast knowledge of these cases, but very interesting. The author’s predominant work was on the Scott Peterson case for those that have a strong interest there-

Washington attorneys prepare for Steven Powell trial in March
    Published: Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 1:34 p.m. MST

TACOMA, Wash. — The trial of Steven Powell on charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography is expected to last a week and Powell is expected to fight the allegations.

On Thursday, a final court hearing was held in Tacoma before Powell’s trial is scheduled to begin March 20.

Powell, the father of Josh Powell and father-in-law of Susan Cox Powell , the West Valley mother of two who has been missing for more than two years, was arrested in September and later charged in Pierce County Superior Court with 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of child pornography.

Steven Powell is accused of using a telephoto lens to take pictures of his neighbors’ young children without their knowledge while they were in a bathroom.

According to court documents filed during an omnibus hearing on Thursday, Steven Powell’s defense attorneys indicated the general nature of their defense would be “general denial.” Other possible answers available to defense attorneys, but not chosen, were “alibi,” “consent,” “insanity” and “diminished capacity.”

A box on the court papers labeled, “Defense has received a plea offer from the state,” was left unchecked.

The court papers also say Steven Powell has no known prior criminal convictions.

Attorneys are requesting a jury trial that is expected to last six to eight days. Powell has remained in the Pierce County Jail since his arrest.

Josh Powell, who is trying to win back custody of his two young boys after a court ordered them to be temporarily placed with Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, recently filed a notice with the court ***indicating he had moved out of his father’s house.***
Powell told the court he has a new primary address in Puyallup, Wash.

It appears the father-in-law of missing Puyallup mom Susan Powell has either run out of money, or friends.

Steven Powell, 61, has been in the Pierce County Jail since his arrest on voyeurism and child pornography charges on Sept. 23, 2011.

“He’s being held on $200,000 bail,” said Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “He’d have to convince a bail bondsman that he has collateral in the amount of $200,000.”

But Powell, who had a pre-trial hearing Thursday, would have to post just a fraction of that amount to be released before his March 20 trial date.

He was arrested after police from West Valley City, Utah searched his Puyallup home and uncovered thousands of images and videos of children and women taken without their consent.

“They were actually looking for evidence in the ongoing homicide investigation regarding Susan Powell, but in the course of this search, they found thousands of videos, over 100 of which appear to have been shot by Steven Powell,” Lindquist told KIRO Radio in September. “The photographer focuses on the women’s buttocks, breasts.”

The search came a short time after Powell had gone on national television to admit that he had a sexual relationship with his daughter-in-law before she disappeared.

“Susan was very sexual with me,” Powell told ABC’s Good Morning America. “We interacted in a lot of sexual ways because Susan enjoys doing that.”

As Utah authorities work to solve the mysterious disappearance of Susan Cox Powell, Washington officials are focused on another unresolved problem: what’s best for her two young sons.

For now, Charlie, 6, and Braden, 4, are living with Chuck and Judy Cox, their maternal grandparents, in Puyallup, Wash. But where they will live permanently depends on the outcome of two court cases.

A Jan. 19 review hearing is set in the child welfare action brought by the state’s Division of Children and Family Services. A judge will then review how the boys are doing; what progress their father, Josh Powell, has made in addressing safety concerns; and whether any new services are needed.

“Everything is on the table at those review hearings,” said John Long, senior counsel in the Washington Attorney General’s Office.

Filings in that case are confidential, but according to a document filed as part of the second court case — a custody petition filed by the Coxes — Josh Powell recently signed an agreed dependency order that eliminates the need for a trial. That order likely spells out alternative plans for the boys’ future, including what their father must do to get them back.

In their case, Cox asked the court in mid-November to appoint a guardian ad litem, who represents children’s interests in court proceedings, so a custody investigation may begin. He also asked that they be allowed to review Josh Powell’s psychological evaluation.

Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies removed the boys from the Puyallup, Wash., home they shared with their father, grandfather Steve Powell and other relatives on Sept. 22. That same day, Steve Powell was arrested on charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography; he remains in jail.

After five days in a foster home, the state temporarily placed the boys with the Coxes. During a shelter hearing on Sept. 28, Judge Kathryn J. Nelson ordered that the children remain in state custody and with the Coxes, citing the allegations against Steve Powell and the ongoing investigation of their mother’s disappearance. To date, no charges have been filed against Josh Powell in either matter, and he has denied involvement in both his wife’s disappearance and his father’s activities.

Update: The children will remain with Susan’s parents and it looks as though Josh may have his own computer “issues.”

Just on CNN Josh Powell’s house exploded. Powell and both his sons believed to be dead.

A little more. A social worker had dropped the boys off for a visit with their dad. As she returned to her car she smelled gas and then the house exploded. The footage on tv seems to indicate only the Powell residence was damaged.
