Susan Powell Missing: Perv In Law Steven Powell Arrested For Child Porn and Voyeurism Powell Kids In Protective Custody
(Update 10:00AM EST Susan Powell’s children are in protective custody with Pierce County Child Services)
Pullyallup, WA- You knew it was coming. Steven Powell, unaffectionately dubbed Freak-in-law by www.blinkoncrime.com, was arrested yesterday after child porn and non-consensual hidden video and media files were found during the most recent search of his home by search warrant, related to the West Valley investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell.
Powell is facing charges for possession of thousands of sexually explicit images and videotape of both minors and adult women apparently many appear to have been taken without their knowledge in the Powell home.
Pierce County prosecutors say among those images, are some of Susan Powell. Steve Powell, 61 was taken into custody late Thursday on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of depiction of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. It is believed the material was taped between 2006 and 2007 and may include Powell’s neighbors.
Pierce County prosecutors have not ruled out future additional charges.
Steven Powell, father of Joshua Powell, a person of interest in his wife Susan’s disappearance and all around dolt, was not seen fleeing the home in a midnight camping trip.
West Valley Police are referring all calls regarding the elder Powell’s arrest to the Pierce County Sheriff’s office and stress his case is unrelated to the ongoing investigation of Susan Powell’s whereabouts.
It is not known if as a result of Steve Powell’s arrest, Pierce County Child Services will be called to insure the safety and care of the two young Powell children, Charlie and Braden, as they spent a great deal of time with their 61 year old Grandperv (hint to Chuck Cox).

The sad part to me is that Susan appeared to have no physical help from her family. If one of my girls found herself in such a position, she would be removed by all the boys (4) and me. LE cannot help until a crime has been committed or a suspected crime. Family and friends looking after one another is the only way.
The West Valley Police should have filed some kind of charge against Josh to hold him in Utah.
We don’t have all the possibilities that LE could apply concerning charges for the evidence found in the home in Washington state. IMO bail, if any, should be the highest limit the law can apply. Keep this freak locked behind bars if at all possible.
The court needs to think about placing Josh under protective custody to prevent him from running or commiting suicide. This would make the job for CPS a lot easier.
So Steve Powell has been terminated from his job with the Washington Corrections Department as of yesterday.
I sure hope that his job of selling inmate built “classroom furniture” to Washington state schools, was done without actually hanging around the schools!

The father-in-law of a missing Utah woman has been fired from his job with the Washington Corrections Department after he was charged with voyeurism and possessing child pornography.
Corrections spokesman Chad Lewis confirmed that Steven Powell was terminated Friday. Since 2006, Powell has worked for Washington State Correctional Industries, a Corrections Department division in which inmates learn trades like furniture making. The department says Powell sold classroom furniture built by inmates to Chelan County school districts.

I wonder what set the car alarm off inside the Powell garage?
Somewhere around midnight, Josh takes his two boys out camping. At 11:45 pm, just before he leaves, the neighbor hears the Powell’s car alarm going off inside their garage. He and his sister had just returned home and they both heard it.
His sister asks him to go tell the Powell’s about the alarm, but he says that he feels that if they could hear it from outside, that Josh and Susan would be able to hear it from the inside of the house and would take care of it. The alarm went off for approximately two minutes before it stopped. The man reports that no lights were on inside the Powell home during that time.

Reading this I suddenly thought of an old chain email that urged single women to leave their car keys on the bed stand at night. If anyone broke in or if help was needed in the event of incapacitation, set off the car alarm to alert the neighbors. Perhaps there was a struggle and Susan did just that, and it took Josh two minutes to subdue her before deactivating the alarm. Odd that there were no lights on, though. Still creepy
Just reading the court docs that specify exactly what Steve P zoomed in on while photographing these little girls, just about brought me to tears!
I feel so bad for the mom who now knows just what was being stared at and photographed on her girls. She cried when LE told her what was in the pictures-I cannot imagine how violated she must feel, for herself and her kids.
This sick POS sat safe in his house and shot naked pictures of little, tiny girls under 10 years old! And that’s just what has been found, so far. I’m sure LE will find other young victims of this freak as they continue going through the media they took from his house.
He violated this mom’s rights to bath her daughters, let them use the bathroom in their own home and change their clothes, in what she thought was a safe and secure environment for her kids.
What if he traded these pics with other pedos?

Some thoughts from various comments above –
1. Yes, I think it’s very likely that the
reason Susan was murdered was that she
found out about Steve’s little hobby.
We need a strong enough motive for murder
here.
2. Steve’s attempt to paint Susan as sexually
immoral is, in psychology speak, classic projection
of his own dark psyche onto someone else.
This happens a lot in murder cases, esp.
in family or lovers situations. The perp
tries to Control the situation by projecting
guilt onto another person.
3. I strongly suspect that at least some
of Susan’s so called “diaries” have been
cooked by Josh (ghost written) to make her
look either immoral or suicidal. Josh is also
attempting to control the investigation by
publishing them publicly. Red flag.
4. I also strongly suspect that LE has been
building this case on Steve carefully for
weeks or months undercover until they knew
they had video and picture evidence.
5. Unfortunately, at this point I doubt that
Susan’s remains will ever be found. I hope

I have been away from BOC for a while because I received a promotion at work and have to back fill my old position, which is taking forever might I add, so doing both my new job and old job now. Plus, I’m a working mom (well my kids are 19 and 18 now LOL). Anyway, needless to say, I’ve been a tad busy. FINALLY had time to pay a visit today and try to catch myself up. Missed all of you and our conversations here on BOC.
Anyways, this is a terrible shame. Susan Powell married into her worst nightmare. She had to deal with a father in law who is a complete and utter sick bastard perv. And, she had to live with Josh. And, I am positive that one of them, if not both of them, are absolutely the who and what of her disappearance and that the sick bastard perv father in law was part of if not all the why.
At least now they got the kids out of that environment and away from those people.
Maybe just maybe LE can use this to get one of them or both of them to talk about Susan.
I wish women would just get the “f” out of relationships/situations which they even have the slightest inkling that they are at risk of some kind of abuse, no matter verbal, physical, sexual, whatever. Too many times, women try to stick it out, especially when children are involved. But, sadly, too many times it ends in tragedy.

Just looking at Steve Powell gives me the creeps..there is something about him…like maybe he wanted to get caught. That must have been a heck of a telephoto lens to go in for those type shots..Also, he would have had to be alone to do this uncaught….seems would really take a lot of thought and planning to do what he was doing. Josh Powell has the flat facial aspect, relative lack of eye movement and lack of vocal inflection of someone with Asperger’s Syndrome.
Compare his lack of facial expression to his own father’s animated face in this video.
The only similarity in their facial expressions is when Josh talks about Susan’s sexuality and her walking down the street in her underwear. (Which he asserts was embarassing, but his expression is a disconnect from embarassment.) It’s the only time in the interview his expression changes; he smiles the same smarmy smirk as Steven does when talking about Susan’s sexuallity.

Does anyone know what Josh’s job/career was? Was he in a field which requires much greater intelligence than he appears to exhibit otherwise?
I went in the way back machine over at SM, reading as much as I could on the first thread about the case.
According to reports from friends, Susan had wanted improvement in their relationship or she was through . She had demanded that they start counseling and that he start attending church regularly…both by Christmas. She was disappeared with help by Dec.7th.
Factor in freak-in-law and there’s a recipe for disaster.

I remember reading this too.
A perfect example for woman who are in abusive relationships (whether physical or emotional, sexual, or verbally abusive), that THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME for the woman is when she is ready to leave her abuser and is making plans for her and the childrens escape.
The abuser may get wind of her plans to leave – or may even just feel the difference in the woman’s demeanor (that she’s no longer placating him or trying to smooth the relationship over).
So, so sad. Susan almost got away to a better life for her and her babes.
By all accounts Susan was ready to take her babies and leave skeezoid Josh and his freak father very soon.
Multiple comments to coworkers and friends about how bad the relationship had become, emails, and even a notebook detailing Josh’s threats against her to take her babies away from her. Telling friends that if anything happened to her – that she would never commit suicide or leave her children. (see snip from article below)
To some it may seem a simple thing to just leave an abusive relationship.
But abuse is so insidious, and the abuser knows exactly how to play your strings and keep the control.

I too told a few close friends that if anything were to happen to me – to please ask LE to investigate my pyscho-ex.
The scariest time was when plans became more concrete with dates set and after plans made.
There is a need to pretend that everything is the same “normal” that the abuser is used to – so as not to arouse suspicion.
All counselors and abuse organizations warn woman to make a plan + go as soon as you can safely – but to use extra caution as the time approaches for leave date b/c the abuse (and possible violence) is most likely to escalate as the abuser sees their control slipping away.
Unfortunately, it sounds like Josh figured out that Susan was leaving his sorry ass – and the worst has happened.

All of this is sickening. SICKENING! Either Susan caught Freak and he killed her, or Josh killed her to protect his freak father. I’m hoping it’s the former and Josh (perchance he’s another victim of his father’s abuse) spills his guts. There is NO way this woman would have left her children in the care of these two men. I would encourage those who have not already done so to read the book “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. This family seems to be a lot like the family in the book.
Although there is a movie out on DVD and Blu-ray made in Sweden with English subtitles and dubbing available, as well as a US movie coming in December; the movies seem to center around the most popular character, Lisbeth Salander. The book centers more on a pathologic family with multi-generation hatred for women. In fact, the Swedish title “Män som hatar kvinnor” translates as “Men who hate women.”
Has anyone gone to Josh’s website for Susan? I just did and I was shocked by the pictures that were chosen for Susan. It even says on there how much she loved hairstyling and makeup…. Not according to the pics he picked.. WOW!

It is actually a trilogy, well, actually there is an unfinished 4th installment, which is in the hands of the deceased author’s family(of which he was estranged). I believe his “partner” of some 20+ years was fighting the family for the rights to finish the final leg, and publish…Hopefully the family will relinquish it to her, the story is very intelligent…
“Dragon Tattoo” was awesome, and the 2nd and 3rd are better…while I somewhat agree that the 1st appeared to center around the Vanger clan, it is simply laying the groundwork for Salander’s(and her family’s) character throughout the trilogy…
I respectfully disagree with the idea that Josh (blech, hate to even write his name) might have Asperger’s. I worked around AS individuals for 25 years and nothing I saw in that ABC video link annals posted said AS to me…I see him being calculating, careful, cunning, acting, SMUG. And maybe on some kind of meds to keep it together, which would alter his affect. He may not be the whacko “social butterfly” his sick father is, but his inflection under these circumstances isn’t so odd, IMO. So sad for this young woman’s family and kids to be tortured by these monsters trying to smear her name and keep her from her family.

The only remains found turned out to be many charred wood chips that multiple dogs hit on. The dogs reportedly lost interest in the site after the wood chips were excavated from a couple of feet down. Chips being tested, no results at this time.

two quick thoughts – I concur with Tar Heel Gal that Josh does not exhibit classic AS “symptoms”. Like she says, he appears too careful and pensive. I have also worked with AS populations and I never once got that vibe from JP. Even after reading it here and re-watching and reflecting, nope, not buying it.
As to the keys on the bedside table. So sad – fat lotta good that did her. The idea is that outsiders are alerted to trouble and then investigate. Seems the neighbors just considered it a nuisance noise and did not investigate. Just something to consider for those of us who suddenly think this is a great idea. Maybe tell your surrounding neighbors, co-workers and friends that you’d do this – otherwise, just seems like one more sound we try to drown out whilst cursing the car owner.
Thank you Word Girl for your link to Steve Powell’s “report.” He certainly has woven an interesting scenario to “explain” what happened to his daughter-in-law. I am perplexed by the fact that he not only sent this to law enforcement but that he also thought they would consider this a viable investigative document.
In light of his arrest I am increasingly suspicious of his involvement in Susan’s disappearance. I also wonder about the “lifestyle” Susan was, and the boys have been subjected to since her death.
Soapbox in hand: Society needs to become familiar with the attributes/characteristics of pathological individuals so we can protect ourselves, our children, and future generations. The justice system needs to collaborate with the mental health profession for an adequate means of protecting society as well as adjudicating these dangerous individuals.

The Declaration for Determination of Probable Cause introduces Susan’s case as a “missing individual” then, in the next paragraph, refers to it as a homicide investigation. Does that mean they have enough evidence to prove she’s no longer alive?

I meant to respond earlier to the alarm going off in the dark of the Powell’s garage at 11:45 pm, as witnessed by his neighbors.
Could the boys have been in the vehicle with one door open/ajar and then Josh opened the trunk/back lid with a key which set off the alarm?
(I just borrowed my friend’s audi and it did that most alarmingly!)
There would be only one reason to open the trunk on that night.
At least, this neighbor’s testimony places someone at the home at that time.
As I recall, Josh stated that on that ever-so-weird “camping trip” with his little boys (during a snow storm??? and the boys are at the time 2 and 4?? – not Eagle scouts!!), that they had time to roast some ‘smores over the camp fire.
…I bet that’s where Susan’s body has been incinerated ….we’ll never find her! And those poor babies were witnesses to a crime that they can never even imagine.

Steven Powell’s longtime friend knew he had been hung up on Susan sexually since 2002. She had told LE about that and about his extensive porn collection early in 2010.

I wondered about what would set off the car alarm too WordGirl, so I looked up ways that car alarms are set off. I have never owned a car with an alarm myself.
Two, I found interesting: A heavy bump to the outside of the car, and very loud, rumbling noises(like a souped up car/motorcycle going by–or maybe a running generator?)
Mostly I wondered why it would keep going off for at least two minutes. Seems like Josh would want that alarm shut off quickly–unless he was “very busy” with something else?
As far as I have read, the family only owned one vehicle and that was a mini van.

The Cox were given temporary custody today, a decision on further arrangements is expected during another court hearing tomorrow. It’s being reported that a state prosecutor told the court that Josh himself is the subject of a [child] pornography and voyeurism investigation.
