Susan Powell Missing: Perv In Law Steven Powell Arrested For Child Porn and Voyeurism Powell Kids In Protective Custody

(Update 10:00AM EST Susan Powell’s children are in protective custody with Pierce County Child Services)

Pullyallup, WA- You knew it was coming.   Steven Powell,  unaffectionately dubbed Freak-in-law by www.blinkoncrime.com,  was arrested yesterday after child porn and non-consensual hidden video and media files were found during the most recent search of his home by search warrant,  related to the West Valley investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell.

Powell is facing charges for possession of thousands of  sexually explicit images and videotape of both minors and adult women apparently many appear to have been taken without their knowledge in the Powell home.

Pierce County prosecutors say among those images, are some of Susan Powell.   Steve Powell, 61 was taken into custody late Thursday on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of depiction of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.   It is believed the material was taped between 2006 and 2007 and may include Powell’s neighbors.

Pierce County prosecutors have not ruled out future additional charges.

Steven Powell, father of Joshua Powell, a person of interest in his wife Susan’s disappearance and all around dolt, was not seen fleeing the home in a midnight camping trip.

West Valley Police are referring all calls regarding the elder Powell’s arrest to the Pierce County Sheriff’s office and stress his case is unrelated to the ongoing investigation of Susan Powell’s whereabouts.

It is not known if as a result of Steve Powell’s arrest, Pierce County Child Services will be called to insure the safety and care of the two young Powell children, Charlie and Braden, as they spent a great deal of time with their 61 year old Grandperv  (hint to Chuck Cox).

(Editors Note: Who did not see that coming with the whole “flirtatious relationship” BS- this dude is a seriously sick f*ck. If you had any doubt, read this- a John Jay undergrad could profile this guy in 2 pages )

I read in my local paper today that Josh was also arrested for Porn.

    Blink – can you confirm?

  2. A Texas Grandfather says:

Fox cable news is reporting this morning that the children have been placed with Susan’s parents. This is IMO exactly where they belong. CPS and the court have done the right thing.

Now we have both Powells being investigated for child porn. No wonder this poor woman wanted out. It is just so sad that she was not able to escape with her life.

Now LE needs to really put the pressure on Josh and his father to tell what they did with Susan so the body may be recovered if possible. The Cox family and the two litle ones need closure.

Josh Powell told the court he never saw any pornography at the house in Puyallup, and that there was no “clear and present danger” to his children, KOMO reported. He also said that he would be moving out of his father’s home and that the family would not post bail for Steve Powell.

Josh Powell is the only named person of interest in his wife’s disappearance, and the Cox’s attorney told the courtroom today that his clients believe he is solely responsible for their daughter’s disappearance.
Josh Powell denies any involvement in whatever happened to his wife.

“I did not harm her, I did not have anything to do with her disappearance,” Josh said at today’s court hearing. “I love my wife.

Attorneys representing Child Protective Services (CPS) temporarily placed the boys, ages 6 and 4, with Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, on Tuesday. Wearing a purple shirt — the color that has come to symbolize the campaign to find the missing Utah mom — the sister-in-law of Susan Powell said during the recess she visited with the boys, ages 6 and 4, Tuesday night at the Coxes’ Puyallup home.

They read stories and played games, she said.

“The boys really warmed up to us quickly,” Graves said. “They were really happy to see us.”

Chuck Cox spoke briefly to The Salt Lake Tribune about the boys, saying “They are with us and they’re doing fine.”

Graves said allegations by her estranged brother, Josh Powell, that his sons don’t know their grandparents or other relatives is “ridiculous.”

“They were “over at our house almost weekly,” she said. “The idea they don’t know us is silly.”

Asked if the boys had inquired about their dad, Graves said, “They mentioned something, but we just tried to not go into that kind of thing.”

Investigators say that the entire Powell family is under investigation and they are all persons of interest in this case. It’s strongly believed that Josh Powell is responsible for the disappearance of the missing Utah mother.

Sheriff’s office removed Powell children for safety; 2 judges may review case separately

While state officials in Washington have the authority to ask law enforcement to remove children from homes that they feel pose a possible danger, in this case it was the sheriff’s office that made the determination to remove the children, said Sherry Hill, communications director for the Washington Department of Social and Health Services’ Children’s Administration.

“They determined there may be some sort of harm to the children or they may need to be protected in some way. They chose to put the children in protective custody,” she said without going into detail.

Hill was not allowed to talk to about any specifics of the Powell case. Calls made to the spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff Office Monday either rang without an answer or went to a voice mail that was full.

But in general, Hill said once a child is placed in protective custody in a foster home, the state has 72 hours to file a case in juvenile court. She said her department will conduct its own investigation and choose whether to file a motion there to continue protective custody.

The Cox family’s petition to gain custody of their grandchildren is a separate matter held in a separate court, Hill said.

It is likely the two courts will be communicating with each other to make sure conflicting orders aren’t issued from each jurisdiction, she said. Either court could determine whether it’s best to place the children back with the father, place them with their grandparents, with other relatives or keep them in foster care.

West Valley police chief opens up about Susan Powell investigation

In a sit down interview with Nielsen in his office Tuesday, the chief used phrases like being “in the fourth quarter” and the “tipping point” when describing where the investigation into Susan’s disappearance is now at.

“We’re right here on the verge of this. We get through the evidence in that trailer, I’m greatly optimistic we will be … oh man, all that hard work is paying off I think,” he told the Deseret News.

Much of his excitement comes from the mountain of evidence collected Aug. 25 during the search of Josh and Steven Powell’s home.

“We filled a damn trailer. It’s going to take us three months to go through it,” the chief said.

Nielsen said there is still plenty of evidence left to comb through, which could possibly lead to finding other persons of interest.

Nielsen clarified statements that Josh Powell, Susan’s husband, is the only person of interest in the case.

“We say, somehow, he’s our only person of interest, that’s really not true,” the chief said. “Anything that comes up, we’re looking at it.”

The Coxes’ lawyer, Steve Downing, told the court that Josh Powell has exhibited indifference during the search for his wife.

“He’s never done one thing to look for Susan,” Downing said, according to the News-Tribune. “My clients have never stopped looking for Susan.”

Meanwhile, a friend of Steven Powell from Ellensburg, Wash., Sandy Crain Anderson, said in an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune that Steven Powell was obsessed with pornography, and his daughter-in-law, for years.

Josh and Susan were living in Steven’s home in Puyallup, Wash., before their move to Utah, and Steven Powell frequently talked about “how great she was, how beautiful she was,” Anderson said.

When she asked Powell why he wasn’t dating anyone, he said Susan was “all I can think about,” Anderson related.

“He was hung up on her sexually, it seemed,” she said. “He’d talk about trying to see under her clothing, see her breasts. Even back then, he had this idea she was flirting with him.”

  14. Riverpearl says:

An attorney representing CPS, John Long, told Nelson Wednesday there are many good reasons that warrant keeping the children in state custody instead of with their father, Josh Powell.

Chief among them: police are still investigating what Josh Powell may or may not have known about his father’s criminal activities while he was living with him in Puyallup.

The images, taken from ***15*** computers confiscated from the home in August, were available to everyone living in the home, Long argued. Josh Powell and his sons have been living with Steve Powell since last year.

    Long also said Josh Powell

==>admitted to CPS workers that he has taken photos of people’s legs without knowledge<==

and that **some of his father’s information may be on HIS computer.***

Josh Powell countered in court that he did not go through his father’s personal belongings and also said his career as a software developer has no link at all to his father’s crimes. Most of the 15 computers were old and in disuse, he said.

Josh: For record, he objects to the placement; agrees to undergo psychological evaluations as part of service plan for getting children back.

Josh Powell said he did not oppose allowing cameras inside the courtroom. Speaking in a slow voice, he told the court he was present for the “best interest of my children.”

“I would like to have all due process available,” Powell said. “(The media) have been known repeatedly to misquote and take partial information and turn it on its head.”

Powell said he did not “have specific information I intend to share about my sons today.”

Nelson asked Powell to clarify his statement, saying she didn’t understand if he was for or against video cameras in the courtroom. He clarified by saying “full disclosure provides greater protection than partial disclosure.”

TACOMA, Wash. — The estranged sister of Josh Powell said Wednesday that she believes her brother is responsible for Susan Powell’s disappearance, and she is glad the couple’s children are no longer in Josh’s care.

**This freaks me way out & I hope this ‘declaration’ keeps Susan’s children OUT of josh’s custody forever.

Court documents showed that pornography was also a major factor in Steven Powell’s 1992 divorce.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – The father-in-law of a missing Utah woman was once accused of inappropriately discussing sex with children and keeping pornography in his home against the wishes of his wife, according to court documents.

A 1992 divorce case reviewed by The Associated Press shows Steve Powell’s ex-wife accusing him of damaging his children’s respect for marriage.

In the court documents, Terri Powell wrote that Steve Powell talked of teaching his children about birth control methods when they were as young as 9 years old. Terri’s sister, Becky Mulcahy, wrote in the documents that Steve Powell told her that he had shown his youngest children books about sexual intercourse when they were 6 and 8 years old.

Terri Powell said her husband viewed people as animals and that they should be able to have sex with anyone at any time. She recalled a conversation in which Josh referred to a girl his brother, Johnny, liked. “All she is good for is her body, right Dad?” Terri recalled Josh saying.

“Yeah, that’s right,” Steve Powell replied, according to the declaration.

Terri Powell also said Steve Powell kept hardcore pornography in the home and that he visited pornography shops.

Jennifer Graves, Josh Powell’s sister, said in an interview with The Associated Press that she broke off ties with her father in part because of his problems with sex and pornography. She recalled going on a business trip with her father when she was about 11 years old and that he viewed a pornographic video while she was with him.

“Looking back, I wonder if he was willing to do that with a 10-12 year girl – his daughter- in the room, what else would he be willing to do?” she said.

I’ve been through a divorce and it was not pretty, but the idiot survived. I am about to go through another divorce (I know; stop judging me) and he too will survive. I totally understand those feelings of how it would be so much easier if they would just die in a fiery crash on their way home from work, but goodness, those are avoidance fantasies. My current theory is that the person who murders their spouse is hugely conflict avoidant–ironically. Some psychologist needs to write a book on these people…

Tacoma, Wash. • A judge here has ruled the children of missing Utah mother Susan Cox Powell will remain in state custody for now, saying it is not safe for them to continue living with their father, Josh Powell.

    Downing finished with a crusher.

“My clients believe that Josh Powell is directly responsible for their daughter’s disappearance,” he said.
Josh Powell, sitting alone, his words recorded by a bevy of television cameras, took his turn.
He said he had no knowledge of wrongdoing by his father. He said his children weren’t at risk. He said his father’s property was taken out of the house.

He called his wife’s disappearance “another matter,” and said he had nothing to do with it.

He accused his wife’s parents of orchestrating “a finger-pointing campaign,” of trying him in the tabloids. He said they’d harassed him. He said he released information about her because he believed knowing her was the key to finding her.

He said he supported the search for his wife – but not if it was based on the supposition that he killed her. He said he asked state workers to “facilitate” counseling for the boys.

“I believe that they do need it, but obviously not for the reasons Mr. Downing’s clients claim,” he said. He said his sons were healthy and happy and needed to be home with their father.

She asked both sides if they wanted to submit anything else. Both did.

Long pointed out that child-protection workers had interviewed Josh Powell and the boys as part of their own investigation. That material was still being developed, and it was typically confidential, but if Josh Powell was willing to release it, the judge could review it.

Nelson looked at Powell, who hesitated. He said he didn’t know what was in the file. He wondered if he could review it first. No one said he could.

Nelson said she’d let Powell think about it and inform her later, via email. She ended the hearing and told the parties to return the next day.

Powell left the courtroom, walking swiftly, trailed by a herd of cameras. Reporters shouted questions in his wake. He ignored them.

Judge declines to let Josh Powell have custody of his 2 sons

John Long, who is representing the Washington state Children’s Administration, made additional arguments Wednesday about why the children should not be living in the home with Josh and Steven Powell. He said Josh’s mentally disabled brother has answered the door in the nude in the past and is often nude inside the home.

Long also told the judge that Josh Powell has admitted that he takes photos of people’s legs in public without their knowledge.

But Josh Powell denied both allegations and argued there was no reason for anyone to believe his sons would be at risk in his home.

“My brother is a decent, modest person,” he said. “My sons are safe, they have everything they need. They have all of their needs met.”

Josh Powell also agreed to undergo a psychological evaluation in order to get his son’s back. He requested that he be allowed as much unsupervised time with his children as possible, but asked that his sons not be allowed to attend LDS Church services. Prosecutors suggested he could visit the children while the Cox family attended services.

The judge, however, ordered that Josh Powell could have three hours of supervised visations on Sundays with his two sons.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Kathryn J. Nelson made the ruling just after 3 p.m. MST.

Chuck and his wife Judy received temporary custody of the boys Tuesday night. The judge’s ruling could determine who would get permanent custody.
The state attorney told the judge Wednesday that appropriate placement would be with Susan’s parents. Josh said if he can’t have them, then he wants his sons placed in foster care.

    http://www.ktvb.com/news/regional/130742628.html

  20. Wildflower says:

A Child Protective Services attorney claimed that Josh took pictures of women’s legs without their knowledge, thought Josh claims to have only taken photos of his two boys and of landscapes.

They state also claims Josh’s brother answered the door at the family’s home–where Josh was staying with the two boys–completely naked. That home also has a picture of a woman with a sword going through her body on display.

The judge ruled that the two children will remain in the state’s custody but allow them to remain with the Cox family in Washington.

IRT JP stating children should be “in foster care IF NOT w/him”…
… gives me the ‘creeps’ —
first thought upon reading that –

IMO JP sees “‘his children as his possession & ONLY his … IF he cannot ‘have them’ – no one should & the dredges of foster care are a ‘suitable’ replacement until …”

I am thrilled the Judge ordered 3-hour supervised visitation on Sundays for Josh[while Cox's attend church]
    - but -
Am very concerned JP may USE his time to ‘abduct children &/ or do harm to them & possible also himself.”

Is anyone else having same thoughts??

IF he sees “the final revenge against Susan & her parents as ‘taking the boys permenetly’ — the boys & g-parents are in very real danger.”

I have NOT read IF the 3-hr supervised visit will be say a police station -or- other highly secured location. Having JP request Sundays. – highly suspect … weekend day seems ‘less structured’ than a week-day’ but truthfully ANY visitation w/o LE oversight seems too ‘open to … whatever JP may want to do’ …

What I’m ‘fearing’ is WHAT IS JP capable of IF he feels cornered ??
Is he @ or near the ‘nothing left stage’ … what will he do NOW ??
JP now sees the state of WA & LE ‘against him’ — what could/has that ‘done’ to ‘his me against the world stance’??

… just as a woman’s greatest threat from an abuser is when she is trying to leave &/or when she has left, I truly fear the g-parents & the boys may be in ‘grave danger from JP’.

But the ‘rub’ until JP ‘does something’ LEs are limited …

Is anyone else ‘worried’ about the boys & g-parents safety from JP now that custody of boys are w/ ‘state’ & the boys will live w/Susan’s parents??

An example: Kaine Horman has used a RO to keep his wife Terri Moulton Horman away from their young daughter for over 1-yr in no small part w/his ‘claim she [wife] has something to do w/ his son [from another marriage] ‘disappearance’ as well TMH has not fought either RO or sought anyvisitation.

So my Q – is anyone else ‘wondering about granting 3-hr visitation @ this point in the on-going investigation of JP for not only his part in Susan’s ‘disappearance’ but now for child porn etc??’

    Again ajmo

And what was the nonsense about him saying that he was hurt by the “general public” not hunting for Susan?

For some reason that I’m having trouble identifying, that makes me think searches should be closer to home. Maybe, like he’s set it up for the “general public” to find her somewhere that won’t incriminate him, and he’s disappointed that we haven’t found his setup yet. Maybe she won’t be found alone . . .

Fwiw, I believe the children will have the opportunity to meet with LE via a qualified pediatric therapist, and since nobody in Josh’s family is bailing him out, you can bet their is a concern that he is going to be talking.

Josh looks as bad as he ever has, the bags under his eyes tell the story, I do so wish, that he would unburden himself for the sake of his children. I so hate the situation these little dudes are caught up in.

It is criminal in and of itself to tell children their mother left them, at such a tender age- heartbreaking.

I agree that these little guys have been put through the wringer. They are so young to be dealing with such loss. :o ( Poor babies.

In weeks to come we will know if it is Susan.

    Praying for those children.

  38. A Texas Grandfather says:

There should be high security at the site where the visitation takes place on Sunday. A sheriff’s deputy should be present for the entire time. This guy could try anything including attempting to harm the CPS person supervising the visit. This guy IMO is one sick person.

The Cox family should be very vigilant when they have the children in their care.

These two little ones are going to need a lot of love extended to them by the Cox family in order to overcome the hate they will have for their father and grandfather when the truth is revealed.

  39. zeus says:

I have read that none of SP’s kids who live with him, hold a job.

SP made about $54,000 in 2010. He’s been supporting four adult kids, plus Josh’s two boys.

Any chance that his Steven Chantrey website secretly sells porn instead of music?

B ~ re post #1 – no worries … that’s why I included the knowledge your droid was ‘being cranky’ … lol.
just wasn’t sure where any were sitting so to speak ….

re post #2 – it was your previous post on jp that really got me in the ‘what if’ mode … there have been so many murder-suicide of late that makes a person wonder why jp made a ‘stink’ about the boys attending church w/g-parents [LDS] – when while Susan was present in ‘family unit’ they would most likely been attending LDS -and- jp adding durung church time he liked the boys w/him ….

… maybe it was all the statements he was making in court & all of his ‘strange’ behavior up to now but your comment “controlling sick putz — smarter than one thinks” is exactly what IS putting me on edge. The Cox family does NOT THINK like jp & freak-in-law —

So is there ANY way the Cox family can STOP visitation -or- are left to general mercy ‘until jp does something -or- is arrested for any thing’ ??

I am more than THRILLED the Cox have custody, I just was NOT expecting jp would get ANY visitation.

Thanks for responding — know you will get ‘glitches worked out’. :)

I posted last night I share that concern Riverpearl. He is unstable at a minimum, and if he is in possession of any deviant material, God.

  42. Riverpearl says:

I am THRILLED the boys have been removed from jp’s custody & placed w/their g-parents.
I just NEVER expected the court to grant ANY visitation to jp.

To me, it creates a very ‘dangerous’ situation for the boys & the g-parents have to ‘deal w/jp on a weekly basis’.

My wish is that he IS being ‘watched like a hawk” and “he does not make it to Sunday as a free man”.

I hope CPS, LE & the Cox’s attny have had very frank discussions w/the Cox’s family about [to name a few subjects] abusers, abusers violence, safety and to be on-guard/vigilant about ALL of their comings & goings …

This ‘granted 3-hr visitation feels like a ticking bomb waiting to go off’ … I mean can the person who will be supervising the ‘visit’ be allowed to ‘frisk/pat down jp BEFORE the Cox’s & boys arrive??’

Seriously, is the person supervising the visit, do they make the decision WHERE to meet ??

I am feeling a police station but know that is unlikely to happen. We all have seen people who have ‘gone off in McDonalds. shopping malls, meet ‘n greet congress member @ a grocery store strip mall … and just about ANY place ‘once’ considered ‘safe’ …

So yes, I am elated the boys are w/the g-parents … it always bothered me they did not have custody since Susan’s “disappearance”.

    @Riverpearl
Last night two innocent boys were safe and secure, loved and protected, something that they never had from their father and paternal grandfather.
I have complete faith that Josh is being watched like a hawk right now as LE sifts through the mounds of evidence that hopefully will bring some type of charges against him. I know it is wishful thinking on my part, but it is possible he may not even have this Sunday as a free man.

Trying adgain to post …. this just keeps ‘refusing’ to accept post so have tried to remove “.” w/ DOT …

I also had trouble getting link to work but searched the abc4 site w/article title “Susan Powell case is @ a tipping point”.

    -snippet-
Mayor Mike Winder says that includes trailers full of evidence from both the Powell residence in Washington and the most resent search of the Topaz mountain area. “We have bones, we have charred clothing, we have charred wood, with what the cadaver dogs are excited about, and that we are doing DNA analysis on.”

“He says that analysis could take up to three months. “Are they ancient items? Are they relatively recent? Are they related to this case? That is what we will look to find out.”

He says tips are still coming in, but the person they would most like to talk to, still refuses to help, despite what Josh Powell said in court Tuesday. “When he said in court yesterday that he’s cooperating with the authorities that’s absolutely false.”

Mayor Winder says Josh Powell still refuses to talk to West Valley detectives. But says he will talk to the FBI. “He’s saying well there’s a cost because I have to get my lawyers up to Washington. We are happy to pay those ourselves if that’s what it takes to get him to talk to some authority and try to help us in this case.” In fact, Mayor Winder says if Josh doesn’t want to accept West Valley City money; there are private individuals and businesses that have come forward saying they will pay the expense of facilitating Josh’s interview with the FBI.

But Mayor Winder says despite those offers, Josh Powell remains silent. But he says, with or without his cooperation, the case is moving forward. “The pieces are starting to come together in the jigsaw puzzle.”

Am in total agreement w/everything you said …from your mouth to God’s ear letLE be present IF ‘visitation happens”.

  45. Tar Heel Gal says:

I so agree with Riverpearl’s post (#27) about the mindset of letting this creep have visitation, with all that is happening, what the heck?! “If he is cornered and feels he has nothing left…” Anybody here ever read a true crime book based here in NC, Bitter Blood, by Jerry Bledsoe? The 2 murder suspects (of 5 family members) ended up blowing themselves and 2 kids up in a vehicle, allegedly in part to keep the kids from her ex-husband. That, and plus they were survivalist nuts. Amazing story. Praying that is the most supervised visitation ever. Unbelievable a court wouldn’t think about the welfare of these boys first and foremost.

  46. LaurieO says:

I am just guessing and assuming here, which I know can be very dangerous, but if bad boy Josh is in jail, then visitation will most likely take place at the jail/prison. He can’t have a gun if he’s locked up. This is a high profile case and I am betting LE isn’t going to take their eyes off him.

Not only will he be supervised, but I bet he’ll be in a locked room with video cameras rolling.

I am almost glad he is getting some visitation-notice I said ALMOST!! These boys abruptly lost their mother and now they have abruptly lost their father. Even though their father is a piece of (*&^, they are bonded to him at some level. Many abused kids love their parents because they HAVE to be attached to them for their own sanity.

Now, if he was in on the kiddy porn, then a clean break for the boys may be best. If that is found to be the case, then he has no right to access to them ever.

Thank God the human spirit is strong. With love and prayer and time, the boys may turn out just fine. I sure hope so.

  47. sunshine_4me says:

Susan wanted to leave Josh and IMO opinion, Susan knew something ‘bad’ about Josh and his dad. Josh couldnt have her and knew she had ammo against him with his father’s seedy choices…so Susan is now gone. Now the kids are being removed from him and he states he would rather them be in foster care than with Susan’s parents. And what do the kids know about the night Susan disappeared or what really went on in Josh’s father’s house. He can’t have the kids, and they may have something on him. Same scenario as Susan. I really don’t like the courts allowing him to visit with the kids.

In MD, supervised visitation is handled with the courts; they have a building/common area where all supervised visists occur. Its a madhouse, lots of people, kids, etc. I think the Powell kids need more one on one supervision so that the conversation and such between father and sons are monitored as well as ensure they don’t disappear in the crowd. IMO.

  48. twinkletoes says:

I agree with the above sentiments on supervised visitation. If a visitation actually takes place, Josh is a high risk to hurt them and himself. On the other hand, perhaps LE doesn’t plan to allow him to follow through with the visitation. Perhaps there is some other reason, besides allowing Josh the benefit of seeing his kids, to get him to come to the home of the Coxes. Can you imagine the tension in the air during that visit? Josh looks like he is very close to cracking. That boy is losing what little of it he had in the first place.
