Karen Swift Missing: Clothing Found Is Hers, David Swift Lawyers UP, Mr. Yuk Hogshooter Is A Doppelneighbor

Dyersburg, TN- Missing Mom Karen Johnson Swift’s disappearance is looking more and more like whatever fate the well-liked fitness buff  encountered,  happened very close to her home on Willie Johnson Road.

David Swift, Karen’s estranged husband, has told police Karen left the home at approximately 1:30 am the morning of October 30th after an earlier jaunt to retrieve the couple’s youngest daughter from a planned Halloweenfest  sleepover.

Karen attended a Halloween soiree at THE FARMS golf club earlier in the evening dressed as cat-woman;  her costume was found in her unlocked and abandoned car.

According to the Dyersburg Country Club by laws,  regardless of handicap all attendees  turned into pumpkins by midnight that evening so it is not likely Karen was headed back there.  Reports of her leaving the family residence at that hour are based solely on her husband’s last exchange with her.

Swift filed for divorce from David on October 1oth.   The couple had been divorced and remarried to each other previously.

David, a former Columbia Forest Products employee,  is an independent business owner in the aerosol packaging field and Karen has been developing a horticulture business as “The Yard Lady“.

While Mr. Swift has refused all requests for comment by the media, he is also now refusing to speak to investigators and has referred all inquiries to his recently retained attorney.

Mr. Swift was observed in his driveway after he returned from an interview with DCSO in the first days of the investigation on crutches.

Mr. Swift underwent emergency surgery for a torn patella tendon in April of 2011 but by all accounts has long since recovered from the injury sustained at his daughter’s soccer field.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, sources inside the investigation have confirmed to www.blinkoncrime.com that David Swift refused to allow a search by consent of the couple’s 5 acre property after the first meeting where he allowed officers to look throughout the home for purposes of confirming Karen was not there.

Following discovery in a overgrown area included in the search grid and submission to the state crime lab, the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) prioritized  a pair of jeans and gray zip-up requesting expedited results.

The source goes on to say those items have been identified through test results of mitochondrial DNA to belong to Karen Johnson Swift.  The match was made from a sample comparative from Karen’s mother.

It is believed there are additional items that may belong to Karen that have been recovered- however, the forensic results necessary to confirm her positive association are pending.

During the topical search of the Swift home which did not  include crime scene processing, the Swifts’s two young daughters spent time at the neighbors home.

Jennifer Lamb kept the Swift girls while police were at the Swift home interviewing their father with the intention of locating Ms. Swift.

In a seemingly inexplicable coincidence, both the Lambs and the Swift’s uploaded an image of a rainbow appearing overhead of the two homes spanning over 10 acres, the very day Dave Swift was served his divorce papers.

Marty Lamb, on his way to work at Nucor early Sunday morning, pulled in behind Karen’s white Nissan Murano and “flashed his lights” , only to learn she was not in her car.  With no sign of foul play,  Lamb assumed Swift returned the short distance to her driveway with  no cause for alarm and continued his commute.

DCSO has reported that Karen Swift’s car had a flat tire and has been impounded for crime scene technician processing. What has not been addressed publicly is how the tire came to be flat in the first place.

Karen’s 2004 Murano is equipped with an electronic tire pressure monitoring sensor and she always backed down the nearly 200 foot driveway.   As their was no evidence of a tire blowout, nor could she have been traveling at a high rate of speed,  this editor questions how she could have missed a flat tire getting into the car in a well lit driveway in the first place,  followed by missing the alarm signal and light on her dashboard.  Swift’s car was found across from the home of John Hogshooter at 310 Harness RD.

Hogshooter Not Hogtied

John E. Hogshooter, in court yesterday on aggravated animal cruelty charges stemming from an alleged incident reported  on October 7  by David Swift, was granted bond.

Prior to Mr. Hogshooter’s brief incarceration, his vehicle was impounded and processed for any possible evidence relating to Karen Swift’s disappearance.  Nothing of forensic significance was found and the truck was returned to the former Dyer county Ervin  softball coach.

In contrast to Mr. Swift’s refusal to allow LE to search his adjacent property, Mr. Hogshooter allowed his home and property to be searched voluntarily.

Hogshooter is alleged to have poisoned the Swift family dog as well as an as yet un-named neighbors pet who died as a result.

Within the complaint filed by David Swift,  he states that he watched his dog walk onto the Hogshooter property and upon return, became  ill.

A medication was administered by the Vet to counteract whatever the dog may have ingested and JackBoots was returned to the family the next day.

My Dude JackBoots

JackBoots,  dog rescue of the Swift family,  has a scannable chip implant that emits a low level frequency signal detectable by a scanner,  or radio frequency identification (RFID), so it is possible to isolate for investigative purposes.

The pic of the car shows only left side. Could it be the flat tire is on the right side?
What if someone put the tire flat to avoid the car
being stolen abandoned as it was in the middle of the
night without Karen? ( i know likely not but we have to think at all
    eventualities)

  2. Ragdoll says:

If there’s a flat tire, it’s sure not the driver’s side. If you drive by the car (without getting out) as pictured in B’s link, there’s no way to tell if the passenger side has a flat.

Did someone have time to replace the tire (other than Karen)?

All this rambling on and on is the very reason why we as law enforcement will not allow the public near the crime scene or release vital information. This case will be solved, thats all you people need to know!!!

I chit you not. I wonder if they have pulled all the meter readers off the job until the case is solved yet?

Thanks Blink, that answers my question on ATV vehicles!

Also, the Huffpost from today has talked about Karen’s clothes being found near her car-per her friend “Laura Jane”.
    —————————————————-

“They found her Halloween costume in the car. Some other articles of clothing that belonged to her — a pair of jeans and a gray zip-up — were found in some brush not far from her car. They confirmed [the clothing items] belong to her. They took DNA from her mother and compared it to DNA on the clothes,” Swift’s friend Laura Jane told The Huffington Post.”

My JMO, if they found clothes. Why would the husband take her clothes off. I think the need to look at who was at the party. Who was she with or trying to avoid at the club? I do not beleave the husband wold take her clothes. Just curious.

I think that makes the assumption she was actually wearing them at the time, and that they were not planted.

They were not found near her car, that is incorrect.

Now I am seeing new fireworks right here at Blink’s. I do not know if I should just duck for cover. You sure keep it interesting with respect to this new frontier. If your guest from Dyersburg is really a person from the DCSO, then this tells me that it is time to bring in the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. This is the typical response from a LE person who feels threatened by reading about a case in the news or on a blog such as this.

I have been standing right beside sheriff’s deputies when similar stupid comments were made. This tells me they are frustrated and do not know what to do next.

Maybe we could help by doing a by-the-numbers check list.

  10. zeus says:

This article states that investigators believe the vehicle was originally headed South INTO Dyersburg, but then pulled across the oncoming lane and was parked in the opposite direction because of the flat? Why would that happen?

So say Karen actually did have a flat tire. Then was she headed into Dyersburg and then turned around to head home because the tire went flat?

Or did her abductor think that is what LE would expect to see?

“The photos show Swift’s white 2004 Nissan Murano pointed north on Millsfield Highway on the shoulder of the highway. and care about deeply.

Thanks for the kind words, I know it is not even easy for me, but we have to try to remember those closest to Karen and her family are going through a process and part of that is going to include reading information that they do not want to hear, and do not want to believe.

As advocates, we are obligated to have compassion for their struggle even when it is not so easy.

I can see positioning a vehicle to prepare to change a tire; for safety, better pavement, avoid working next to the brush or in the dark. Assuming the line from stategazette.com is accurate.

I agree with that Jeff, but that is why it makes no sense. She would have needed the light which was on the left opposing corner. She was facing North and the flat was on the right.

I say this like I believe this was an actual flat, I do not, I believe this vehicle was staged, and staged in a hurry.

  16. Word Girl says:

Many thanks for your responses to Coco, Blink. You cleared up a few things for me and allowed my brain to get a little more creative.

Also, your statement about that central truth–what you understand in your gut and in your heart…was significant and probably the best thing I’ve ever heard you say. (I hope our counselors will chime in, as well.)

“follow what your heart and your gut agree on, and what they do not, set aside until they do.” ~Blink at blinkoncrime.com (clarification comma added by WG)

Now, may I respond to your car photo question? I see no tracks at all to indicate that car turned from one direction to another. There are no tracks and no scuff from a flat tire; there is nothing that tells me the car is disabled, except for the open window and the tail lights on.
Heck the window down and tail light on could have been in process by the towing company and quickly shot by the local press or slow investigative police.
I’m not buying the notion that the car was heading one way with a flat tire and had to swing back onto the opposite shoulder.

While I’m here ranting, I have to call David Lohr on the carpet.I’d like a timestamp on his inside information regarding Karen’s clothes and other effects not discussed at this time. David, I’m sure you’re reading.

PS to all of our Blinkers. Fight for Karen’s justice and remember who is at the forefront of our effort. She’s not perfect. She is, however,

Sometimes in this work I feel like I am seeing a rerun of a movie others are seeing for the first time and I am trying to spare them having to watch it through their hands covering their eyes. Not in every case, but in this one, most definitely.

Flat occurred at the site via releasing the air, and by someone who did not know how much air to let out, imo.

ok, so the husband refused a search of the property….wouldnt it be protocol to immediatly initiate whatever is necessary to obtain a search warrant??? I mean, it has been 10 days now. He could have done all sorts of things to cover his tracks (if there are tracks to be covered of course). Is this information being held top secret for investigative purposes? Also, does anyone know how tall Karen is? It appears to me that the drivers seat in her vehicle is back quite far….if she is tall then that explains it. Does anyone else notice this?

    She is 5’5″.

The probable cause burden for search and seizure is a big one absent an established crime scene, or crime for that matter. They really need the right information to list what they are looking for outside of the boiler plate stuff. I suspect they are gearing up for that as we speak as the confirmations of Karen’s clothes are in.

    http://www.stategazette.com/story/1782538/photo/1574761.html

I am guessing it was running at the time. In a vehicle that may end up being involved in foul play, it would be protocol before it is impounded to video it in working order.

  22. phlip68 says:

I am new to this site, and you have great info. I really think something happened to her at the house, and her car placed there as a decoy. The window could have been down to throw her clothes out. I really don’t think she decided to go streaking to the river after having a flat, and throw her phone out, at 2 in the morning. The dogs didn’t track a scent, so i just don’t believe she was there.

    Welcome to BOC phlip68-

It has not been confirmed what canines were used in the area of her property and the recovery of her vehicle outside of the classification of bloodhounds. Because I know they came from the DOC, they are generally scent rated to a live person within a window of hours (ie: up to 12 hours is one rating, etc) and according to the sheriff were not useful. That said, I do not know if that is what LE to recover the clothing.

We don’t know if the window was left open by the last person in the vehicle, or was opened by a CST, but from the looks of the images- this was pre-processing status so I sincerely hope it was not opened by a CST prior to printing the window and surrounding surfaces.

I agree that something happened to Karen in the home, and my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

Has LE let cadaver dogs take a sniff of the vehicle?

I suspect that the victim was not in the car when it was moved and that the clothes were planted. Why would a perp remove a woman’s pants and jacket, but not her more intimate apparel or shoes? I know that anything is possible, it just doesn’t seem likely.

Just a note to say I appreciate the respectful way you stated that. I can sniff a gentleman out thousands of miles away and when I do I try to remember to compliment them for same-

To my knowledge, cadaver k9′s were not used at the car at the scene, but I suspect would be at the impound bay.

So if it is true that the car made a uturn and was pointed back towards Karen’s home, could it have been that that side of the road has access to the woods which could be a good opportunity for someone that was staging the vehicle to escape into without being seen? That would be better for hiding than walking up the side of the road? Blink do you know what that side of the road looks like versus the other side of the road?

    I was just thinking:

In questioning whether DS could have been responsible for the poisoning of the dogs, it is interesting to note that Hogshooter was arrested on charges of animal cruelty but has been released. I did not hear anything about him being arraigned or released on bail. Does this mean that the charges against him were dropped or merely that LE doesn’t have enough evidence to press charges and hold him any longer than they did. I think it is a bad sign for DS that LE searched Hogshooter’s property and didn’t press any charges against him… did they not find any poison on his property? This also makes me think that there may be several reasons why DS does not want his property searched– would the police find animal poison if they did?

  31. Tarheel says:

Thanks for the aerial photo Blink. I see the woods, though I can’t see how far they expand (will look that up on google or something), and I notice the land on the other side of the road looks clear with no trees or woods. 34. GeorgiaDad says:

The aerial is very interesting. I had assumed the vehicle was found in the middle of nowhere, but the photo clearly shows a home just above the care location, as well as mobile units with a flagpole just below it which could be either a home or a business. It looks like there is a fence between the vehicle and the woods to the right. There are also a lot of homes within easy walking distance. There would seem to be a lot of places where residents could easily here a horn blowing (if she thought she was in danger or being followed).

This looks like a good place to dump a car you want to be found, but not a good place to dump a body you don’t want found.

Although some of the soon-to-be-ex’s actions are suspicious, specifically refusing to allow a search of the home (I think hiring a lawyer is appropriate since he is a de facto suspect), I am not convinced that he did it (or at least not by himself).

IF the reports of a ping near the Mississippi at 5, a car sighting at 5:30 (there are also reports of a 4:50 sighting), and the child awaking at 6 are all true, then there seems to be a very tight timeline. He would need to be at the Missisippi by 5, have the car parked by 5:30, and walk back home without being seen by 6. It is doable, but would indicate he was very lucky. He may have had an assistant – “I’ll dispose of her, you plant the phone, clothes and car”. I also have not ruled out that there is someone else who wanted to get rid of her (boyfriend, jealous wife, infatuated admirer/stalker, or even crazy neighbor).

In fact, the placement of the car/clothes is suggestive of the Morgan Harrington case where her shirt was placed in one place to draw attention away from her true location.

I must say that I am not liking any of the information that is coming out-

I do not like that Karens husband, her childrens father is not allowing LE to search the property-

Did he allow LE to search the property when his dog was poisoned?

He seemed very concerned for his beloved pup—what of the childrens mommy- what if she walked home and inexplicably got lost and wandered aimlessly onto her land and was injured from a fall ect? Why on Earth would he refuse LE access to the area?

    My thoughts on the flat-
Believe it or not while driving to pick up my youngest from school yesterday I got a flat- which I didnt realize I had until I heard the thumpity thump… I opened the trunk to find the spare was flat- My phone was accidentally left at home- I was in a hurry…

I had to walk the 2 blocks to the school…

My thoughts obviously turned to Karen- when a person gets a flat they either change it- call triple A or a family member ect for help- or if they are close to their destination they pull over and walk to their destination later returning to the aforementioned plans…

    Questions-
If the tire was not completely flat- most women do not realize it- or just try to drive on it until they reach their destination—why not Karen?
Were the keys in the ignition?
Did Karen know how to change a tire?
Was her flashers on? was the spare moved or unhooked?
What was the last outgoing call?
Who lived in or around the area?
    What caused the “flat”
If the car was staged- why there?

    So many questions…

i also thought about Morgan in this case for the staged clothes with the purpose to draw the attention away.
What about her catwoman costume? It was in the car Why? Did she change clothes at the party before
picking up her daughter? The people hosting Karen’s daughter can tell what she had on when she came
to pick up her daughter. If she didn’t change clothes before coming home, then she must have put those
back in the car before going to bed with her daughter but Why? Was she lured away as she did this?
What about the driver seat? How was it adjusted as the car was found?
Where are the keys? Were the keys left in the car?
    What about her shoes?
If She had a Jeans and a grey shirt on as she left the house
then it may indicate that she left by herself because she was in bed surely with some pygama and not with
    her jeans.
What did DS say to her as she came home and he spoke to her at the stairwell?
How many tire marks were at the side of the Road beside her car? Because one of them
must belong to M.L. her neighbour who backed up his car behind hers
to see if Karen was there? They wanted to investigate some, also others than those from ML?
    Did they investigate ML anyway?
Where and when were the last cellpings?
What was the Internet side that was used at 5h00am?
I think with a few answers of those very questions we will know
so much more and maybe figure out who did this?( sorry for typos)

sometimes after 1h30 am she surely had not this clothes on.

  42. Löni says:

And what about the gas that was in her tank? Was it much? Was it little in there?
What did her daughter have because she was sick? Was she so sick that Karen may have wanted to buy
medication in the middle of that night?
Where was the room placed in the house where Karen was sleeping with her Daughter?
Could it have been possible to someone to knock at the window with the purpose to lure Karen out? Someone
    she knew?
And for last: where were the clothes exactly found and the other items belonging to Karen?

Can we put a timeline together? Do we have enough accurate informations?

For Blink, concerning neighbor dog dying. This article also talks about the poison being in John Hogshooter’s possession-per Sheriff Box.

    *****************************

A neighbor of the Swifts is also said by officials to have had their dog poisoned in the same incident and the dog had died.

“(Hogshooter’s) arrest was based solely on the outstanding aggravated animal cruelty warrant and that is a felony,” said Box. “We basically waited on the lab results to come back from the TBI on the poisoning and they confirmed it.”

Box added the poisons used to poison the Swifts’ and the neighbor’s dogs were in Hoghooter’s possession.

Most informative article I have read since she went missing. My only question is this…I thought she came home from picking up her daughter at 1:30 am, spoke to her husband briefly, then went to bed with her daughter. Then her daughter woke up in the morning in a different bedroom and her mother was gone. This story here is saying she left the home after picking her daughter up, am I right?

It is my belief that she went to pick up her daughter earlier, went to bed with her, and the allegation is she left at approximately 1:30Pm. It is my understanding that came from David Swift.

    @Loni

Or was the costume placed in the car with purpose by someone other than Karen? Was the husband jealous of his wife going out in that costume?

  47. Löni says:

Blink look that is a quote from a report from the page ;missing persons of America

“The question that I come up with is why would Karen leave the house that early in
    the morning and go somewhere.

A neighbor was the one that recognized Karen’s car and found it had flat tires.”

Blink do you know if the flat tire was on the right side front or if it was at the rear?
Because ML never stated that i red that he got out of his car and saw the flat tire.
I only red he backed up his car behind Karen’s car and saw that Karen wasn’t in the car.
How could he have seen the flat tire?????

Excellent question Loni, but yes, flat on right front driver side, and I have heard Marty Lamb say both those things in 2 different interviews. One on video and the other a press quote.

“I noticed it was her vehicle, so I pulled in behind it and shined my lights, and I could see that she wasn’t in her vehicle,” Lamb told WREG-TV.
How could he see the flat tire?

In that video, I never heard him say he saw a flat tire.

    @Bumble
if the costume was placed in the car then it doesn’t
leave much possibilities as who’ve done it?
Hmm… i hope so much he has nothing to do with this.

I thing that interests me concerns the plans for the evening of the disappearance. Specifically, what KS original plans were before the child got sick.

Was she planning on going home when the party ended? Was she planning on going to an afterparty? Was she planning to stay somewhere else?

If she planned on coming back home, then the physical findings of the vehicle would make a good alibi for a planned hit. The husband could dispose of her and then call the police saying “my wife never came home, and I found her car abandoned near the house”, near enough that cell phone pings at the house would be mistaken for pings at the car location. But, if that were the case, the appearance of the sick child would likely cause a change in plans.

If she planned to stay somewhere else, then there may be a “mystery man” who needs to be considered.

I am also interested in the family’s financial situation. I assume that the reason the family still lived together was the house. Many divorcing couples are under the belief that the possessor of the house gets the house in a divorce (the actual law is irrelevant since people generally act on the perception of the law). With two older kids in college, the house may be the only marital asset. If money was tight, I lean more toward the spouse being involved.

I would also be interested in knowing if there was a life insurance policy.

I believe LE already has this information, but doubt they will release it.
