Susan Powell Husband Josh Powell Murders Kids Commits Suicide During Supervised Visitation

Joshua Powell, husband of missing and presumed deceased Utah woman Susan Powell,  deliberately triggered an explosion Sunday afternoon killing himself and the couples two young sons Charles and Braden Powell.

A case worker arrived with the children for the court ordered supervised visitation was blocked entry by Powell, and shortly thereafter the home exploded.

Josh’s Father Steven is awaiting trial for various perv charges and all over creepiness, and Josh was just denied custody of the children in favor of them staying with Susan’s parents,  The Cox’s.

www.blinkoncrime.com wishes to extend our sincere condolences to The Cox and members of the Powell Family who are not perverted freaks or murderers.

It would seem I recall expressing my concern this was a definite concern early on.  I wish to commend all that recognized this and did everything in their power to give these beautiful little cherubs their best chance.

These little guys see their Mother today, and I pray that there is comfort in that reality for those dealing with this loss today.

My sincere thanks. I will be honest, all I really feel like doing is building a time travel machine so I can get to WA by 11:59am last Sunday. A few years ago someone once said to me, sometimes I think that when there is a murdered child, that it is really God’s way of removing them from the Hell on Earth they are in.

I was deeply offended by this, people kill people, not God. I think I have decided it might not be a bad idea to just tell myself that every now and again.

I know you are looking to me to say something meaningful and even comforting.

If the revelation in it’s most human form that an evil man will do evil things is either of those, than great.

Oh yeah, and I really wish it were possible to kill someone over again. I am in no way a violent person, and I do not condone it- but I am a violently protective woman when it comes to children.

“I feel bad for Charlie” playing over and over in my mind.

I just wanted to add to my previous post…my point is that judgement is clouded and obstructed by stressors of all kinds. Ever driven for a period of time only to realize you don’t remember the drive? Why are signals being missed? Blink has mentioned GAL so many times. I don’t get why this is not put into place immediately, except…desensitization.

I have noticed. One of my daughters-in-law is a nurse. She, and her co-workers are constantly being rotated as to avoid becoming attached to any patients in order to remain professional. It is, after all, a business. She said something the other day that made me shudder at the cold hearted-ness of it (and she is not). It is designed to protect her psyche. We also have a medic in the family out on PTSD. I have watched, over the years, PCSD spokesman Ed Troyer change into a middle aged man with a professional affect, when he use to tear up on occasion. We need compassion, but compassion is a mental liability for these people. No answers, only agreement with your observation.

WRT the caseworker and there being any possible signs she may have missed…..

Has anyone noticed the desensitization of professionals in fields like social work, medical, LE….etc etc etc? Maybe they’ve become jaded. Maybe they’re exhausted and working on auto pilot.

B I totally agree. Really, do we even need to see the video of the hatchet purchase! We know it premeditated. I knew I didn’t want to know more of what happened in that house once the door was shut and this is why! My husband said “I don’t want to even know” and my response to him was “if everyone has that attitude who steps up and actually helps stop this from happening again” We have no choice but to “know” Now we just have to figure out how to STOP THIS! And now!

My suggestion is what I posted earlier. If your in anyway linked to a MP but would add, you have to undergo a psych evaluation and a lie detector test and FULLY cooperate and answer every question posed to you by LE. If you do not then your sorry ass get put in the state prison where the harden criminals are and you stay there until you are ready to be truthful! No protective custody you are in the general population. Its time to crack down and have a no tolerance attitude to these people. Don’t people realize that these people are watching the ones before them? Keep your mouth shut lawyer up and you are free. Once again I call BS on that and its time that this is changed and the time is NOW! We can not let this continue. We can NOT!!! It has to stop and the time is NOW!

I’m sick, sad, mad, frustrated, confused, I feel helpless to help and I dread the next MP, murder of a child, murder of an adult. Its beyond me to “get it” I don’t!

How the F do I make a difference?!?!?!

“This incubus posing as a human being hacked these boys with a hatchet first. What the Hell do we do with that knowledge today?

He gave away their toys, and then hacked at them, and set the house on fire.

I see this differently now, I believe this sick freak killed them for crossing him.

For telling the truth about their Mommy in the back of the van.

Do we understand the depravity here? Do we understand how many failed these children by not taking this man’s behavior seriously?

I do not know how the Cox family is coping, but I pray for strength and understanding for them, and for all of us. Cause right now, with all I have seen in my work, the knowledge this was preventable, and sadly, predictable is beyond comprehension.

They ran to him and he hacked at them like a savage. What’s next? A video of him buying a hatchet at Walmart two days earlier?”
    – Blink quote
    ________________________________________________

Boy, Blink you really said what all of us feel here, with this
new sickening revelation. Sometimes, we in the true crime hobby
business – run across things that we wish we didn’t know or
could forget. This is one of those. A hatchet.
Cold blooded pre-meditated murder of your own children.
John List comes to mind, but Josh was worse than that.
Yes I agree, the boys talking was the motive for this tragedy.

As a psychologist, I would speak to the issue of recognizing
and preventing this type of crime. We are just now getting
    around to understanding the sociopath/psychopath. We’re a
long way from being able to correctly identify it in so-called
“normal looking” people that may actually be a danger to others.

The history and evolution of diagnosing mental illness is
often slow and faulty. First you have symptoms but no label
or pattern to distinguish it. No language to talk about it.
Look at how long it took to first correctly label and then
    understand schizophrenia and later autism.

Most or all of the “professionals” didn’t correctly see Josh
for what he was. Yet many here at Blink saw through the facade.
We saw it in the video – something “not quite right”. Better than
that, we saw the body language, the eyes. We know, but it will be
a long time before society is ready to fully deal with this
dangerous type of profile. It’s very subtle stuff to analyze -
is this person really charming, or is he a psychopath?
There are many good books over at Amazon on this personality
disorder, worth doing some research on I assure you.

I have no doubt that someone in the past few years – a co-worker,
a church member, a neighbor – had noticed something strange
about Josh, something disconnected in his behavior. Con man
behavior? Evasiveness? Lack of empathy or appropriate emotion?
Problem is, that’s not against the law. There are no channels
yet for that information to be addressed and processed by
a system. And often, as we know, these types are often very
efficient in daily life and outwardly successful. Normal.

Finally, I am fully on the “nurture” side of the N versus N
argument. Although I have no doubt there are predisposing
factors either in the DNA or brain chemistry of these
individuals, I also believe they are at some point “made”
by an abusive childhood that disconnects the heart from
the mind. As much as I wish that someone had put a bullet
in Josh’s head long ago, I also have to remember that he
too was a little boy once. If you look behind the goatee
“disguise” you still see the face of a child Josh – scared
and terribly low in self esteem.

    very sad tonight,
    Sherlock

The Pierce County Superior Court could not have done anything more to Josh Powell than it had already done. He was not accused of a crime, but only a suspect.

The Pierce County Superior Court court found that the images found on Josh Powell’s computer was adequate cause for a psycho-sexual evaluation prior to lifting restrictions on his visitation, and prior to restoring the children to Mr. Powell’s custody.

While attending daycare in summer 2010, Braden, then age 3, drew a picture of his dad, his brother Charlie and himself in a vehicle. When asked about the photo, Braden disclosed that the drawing was of his family on an outing, and his mother was in the trunk of a vehicle. Braden stated that his dad and mother left the vehicle, and he never saw his mother again.

    w ww.thenewstribune. com/2012/02/06/2015374/was-there-a-clue-in-braden-powells.html

The newspaper article did not say when Braden gave the drawing to Mr. Powell, but one can only imagine what happened when and if he told his father the story behind the drawing. Maybe his father surmised the story on seeing the drawing.

Josh Powell attempted to lay blame on the Cox family after Braden burned his foot after knocking over a pot of water, and a second time after hitting his head while playing with some other boys.

I do not think that the Cox family did anything wrong. To the contrary, they were the only respite and safe harbor that Charlie and Braden had in the past two years.

As to Blink’s comment comparing the Cox matter to the Horman case: The West Valley (Utah) City Police apparently provided information to the court as to images found on Josh Powell’s hard drive that “specifically related to their children’s welfare.”

In the Horman matter, Kaine Horman claimed law enforcement had provided him with “probable cause” to believe Terri Horman was involved in Kyron’s disappearance. To date, law enforcement has not provided any evidence of probable cause to the family court. The only information provided has been what Kaine Horman claims to have received from law enforcement.

The only “evidence” provided are text messages which, again, Kaine Horman claims came from law enforcement and allegedly support his allegations that Terri Horman seduced a third party–not the party to the alleged text messages filed with the court–in an attempt to arrange a murder for hire against him.

Once the “redacted” formatting is removed from the exhibit of text messages, it is clear that the messages are not from a forensic police report of phone records. The messages appear to be a printout of a SQLite database file downloaded from Michael Cook’s iPhone.

Not one single text message indicates any desire to cause harm to Kaine Horman, let alone any hint of a murder-for-hire plot. Nothing in the alleged text messages evidences a criminal act of any kind.

Assuming the texts are true and correct, and were exchanged between Michael Cook and Terri Horman, the worst they contain is as follows:

    1. Sexual innuendo, come-ons, and allegedly, sexually explicit photos.

    2. An admission by Ms. Horman that she has a second phone–a “clean phone”– to avoid monitoring by law enforcement. (The message about the “clean phone” was allegedly sent on a phone that Ms. Horman claimed was monitored by law enforcement.)

    3. A July 7, 2010, request by Ms. Horman that Mr. Cook “not mention” to DeDe Spicher or Stephen Houze that she went to see Mr. Cook the night before.

The text messages might be plausible except that Ms. Horman allegedly made a point of sending a message regarding the “clean phone” from a phone that she claimed was monitored by law enforcement to Mr. Cook’s cell that she expected was also monitored by law enforcement.

In order for the exchange to be accurate, Ms. Horman was sending messages from both phone–her phone that was being monitored and the second so-called “clean phone”–with full knowledge that law enforcement knew about both lines and was monitoring her communications. As such, the sexting takes on a different meaning all together in that she may have simply been acting obnoxious in order to shock and/or annoy the law enforcement detail that was monitoring her every move.

Moreover, in the Horman matter, law enforcement and the family claimed emphatically up until the day before the sting that there was no evidence connecting anyone with the crime.

On Friday June 25, 2010, Desiree Young told an NBC reporter that there was no evidence as to what had become of Kyron. Ms. Young’s claims as to her sister’s statement appear very sincere, and completely contradict Ms. Young’s claims after the sting:

Desiree Young: “We cannot come up with anything. It’s, uh, my sister used a phrase with somebody recently: It’s like a portal opened up in the school and Kyron just vanished into it.”

NOTE: This quote is at 1:10 to 1:20 on the tape.

Similarly, the initial accounts of the July 26, 2010, sting indicated Ms. Horman was fearful and law enforcement took her 9-1-1 calls seriously. This was supported by a 9-1-1 call reports obtained by KATU, which appeared to have come from BOEC or law enforcement that shows a 13-minute call from the Horman residence at 5:18 pm regarding threats, which appears to be coded as a priority 2 call with 5P12 as the responding unit. (The adjacent calls that appeared on the screen capture had the same “2″ coding.) The BOEC logged the call as PM1006261273.

The KATU segment mentions a second call at 11:39 pm regarding a custody issue. Anna Song further reported that Terri Horman wanted to talk to reporters but was being advised by legal professionals not to talk.

KATU later ran a story on July 7, 2010, with a different version of events. The July 7 story claimed Terri Horman place three 9-1-1 calls on June 26, the first a priority 3 call at 5:18 pm regarding a man in a truck threatening her, followed a few minutes later by a second call–also a priority 3–claiming the man wanted $10,000 but not stating why he wanted the money. There was a third call much later that evening related to a custody dispute.
    http://www.katu.com/news/local/97533749.html?tab=video&c=y

The odd account of the June 26 9-1-1 calls followed the closed-door press conference on July 1, 2010, at which Kaine Horman booted Willamette Week and the Oregonian stating they were not “team players”:
    http://www.wweek.com/portland/blog-1034-kyron_hormans_family_boots_ww_and_the_oregonian_fr.html

What appears to have happened is that someone leaked the 9-1-1 call log shown in the June 30 KATU segment, then law enforcement gave a different version of events later that is not favorable to Ms. Horman nor supported by the 9-1-1 call report.

Contrast this with the Josh Powell matter, in which law enforcement and the Cox family have not waivered in their claims as to Mr. Powell’s status as a suspect.

The two cases could not be more different.

Blink says: February 6, 2012 at 1:30 pm

(snipped) “The finding of this judge that Powell could not even be considered to regain custody until the psych sex evaluation should have been enough to cause what is called a material change in circumstances and allow the Cox’s to file ex parte for a modification.

“I know that if I had been a party in any way to the family court matter, I would not have the guts to raise my eyes to the Cox’s.

“Contrast this case with the Horman case, where the family atty was given actual evidence to use in the instant case from the criminal matter.

“What the Hell went on in that home? I think Josh’s sister has not told everything, and she more than deserves her privacy. I applaud her and her husband for speaking out for Charlie and Braden.” (snipped)

Ok, point taken, and I should have mentioned I was speaking in a general sense of the best interests of the child- always the burden of the court.

In the Horman matter, we KNOW an ex parte hearing resulted in the initial TRO- ergo, can we not assume that whatever the court considered as evidence in granting such a petition is NOT known to us? It is my understanding that the court considered evidence relative to the mfh as it’s basis for protecting the safety of Kiara?

This sounds to me like LE was juggling case sensitive information to protect a prosecution, but providing what it could in a different jurisdiction because they took the concern for the children seriously.

If you have never watched Powell in court, he was un-hinged at best. He had dark circles under his eyes and I am pretty sure he was on some sort of medications delaying his speech patterns.

Is my predisposition to the belief he would absolutely harm his kids when backed into a corner?

    Perhaps.

Let me ask it this way- if you had been representing the Cox family in the matter ( all other matters to date the same, to apply) with the judge’s finding that Josh had to undergo a psycho sexual evaluation based on information that was provided ( you would have been privy to) would you have advised the Cox’s to seek an ex parte TRO ?

If you ever have a similar case and you personally feel there is a potential for violence against the children has this situation changed the way you might conduct your representation if you were representing the petitioners?

I appreciate your perspective as always, and more importantly I appreciate your ability to direct meaningful and constructive conversation where I seem to be at a loss to do so.

  13. Titch says:

The only way for ” The People’s” voice to be heard & changes in policy to again take place would be if the Cox family sued the State for negligence resulting in homicide. They are not only supposed to thoroughly evaluate & educate themselves on any given situation before assessing, they are most importantly demanded to make the best decisions for the children, the innocent bystanders. The law is in place to protect the innocent and reprimand the guilty. When the State delves into a gray area of supervised visitation by involving an outside entity to assist the children KNOWING full well the person theyre visiting is a poi in a disappearance, well quite frankly IMO thet need to pay a penalty. They effed up. They failed these kids. They didn’t even try to protect bc if they had, precautionary measures would have been set in place and adhered to. One of the only things done right in this case is the fact that Charles & Judy Cox were awarded custody. Knowing full well that Josh Powell is a poi in Susan’s disappearance, and compiled with the fact they found “sexual” incriminating evidence on Josh’s computer (enough to order a psychosexual eval), there’s absolutely no excuse in this world that justifies Josh being allowed visitation at HIS HOUSE and to only have a contracted out liason from some foster family agency. There’s no way Josh should have had visitation at all until he had the psychosexual eval. No way. My GOD this needs to change. It was totally preventable.

Charles and Judy need a good lawyer, maybe a good diverse team of lawyers, to lobby our capital and make changes. They need to sue. Period. It’s not about money. It’s about doing whatever you have to do to bring about positive change. Lawyers pop out of the woodwork when a case goes high profile and involves murder, whereas they end up defending a poi to try to spare them a death penalty conviction. Well then why not form a “dream team” to represent Charles & Judy to make changes in laws that SHOULD HAVE protected Charlie & Braden?

I need to seriously repent bc I reeeeeally want everyone that stood up for Josh to feel guilt and despair for the rest of their lives.

@ Titch ~ Have you seen the “time of fire as 12:30pm??” WTH is that??

Additional, when did that caseworker make that 1st call to ANYONE??
As well, is she the 1st caller – finally – to 911/police/fire???

Oh sweet god, POS had time to take a hatchet to EACH boy & those sweet babes SURVIVED head & neck injuries long enough to died from smoke inhalation!!! [That damn hatchet was found w/their little bodies.]

Damn straight, the “caseworker & her private contract company” are all over this in CYA mode.

I am having a rather loud negative reaction every time I hear &/or read, “Such & such NEVER considered POS could/would do this … POS never SHOWED ANY behavior or warning signs of such a nature …etc etc”

I mean, do these people HEAR themselves speak???

Is it me?? Of course POS ‘played nice’, that’s what he did – a facade “of normal loving father” … I honestly believe had POS “fooled the Court” and regained custody last week, his plans were still to murder those boys … POS had no where to run, to hide … he wrote in his 6-page letter to the Court last week …”it’s time for the boys to come home” … and in his evil, sick POS mind their murders was how he could/would have “the boys home” …

“Powell’s horrific murder-suicide seemed to come out of nowhere. Just days before, in a motion seeking custody of his children filed with a Washington state court, Powell said he missed his wife, and would remain strong for the boys.”

“A lesser person would fall under the intense scrutiny I am facing, but apparently my inherent resilience as a person makes it increasingly difficult for them to pursue their agendas,” Powell wrote. “I am standing tall for my sons, but it deeply hurts to face such ridicule and abuse. I know my own heart is free of any guilt regardless of what people claim,” he added.

“If we have a case [where] we believe someone was very dangerous, it would have been handled differently,” said Hill. State child-welfare officials could have required the visitations occur in a DSHS office, or even with a police officer present.

Shortly after noon Sunday, authorities were called to Powell’s Graham rental house for reports of a fire. A contract worker hired by the state to provide transportation and monitor the visits between Powell and his sons was ***among the first 911 calls***, and reported to police and her supervisors that Powell whisked the children in and slammed the door in her face moments before the fire erupted.

The worker has not been identified by Child Protective Services, but is described as working with Powell and the Cox family for several months. Foster Care Resource Network, which contracts with the state to work with foster children, adoptive parents and caregivers in Pierce and Kitsap counties, did not return calls Monday.

Thomas Shapley, senior director of public affairs for DSHS, told The Salt Lake Tribune that Powell’s visits with his sons initially took place at the network’s offices but had been in Powell’s home since Nov. 2. A decision was made that it was appropriate to have the visits in that setting, he said.

The worker drove the two boys from the Cox house to visit with Powell for ***four hours every Wednesday and Sunday***, Hill said. The Sunday visits were at Powell’s home. During the visits the worker took notes about the boys’ interaction with their father and was required to submit her notes to Child Protective Services within five days of the visit.

—>”When they have supervised visits, they [the worker] must be within sight and sound of the child and all parties during the visit,” Hill said.<—

The state requires that all contract employees hired to handle such supervised visits have a

minimun of ***20 hours*** of training on child abuse, neglect, domestic violence and family dynamics, Hill said.

It’s bad enough innocent children are being kidnapped out of their own beds and front yards. Sorry to say this but even though it’s a crime, it’s almost impossible to 100% monitor and prevent even if precautionary measures are established. However, in Charlie & Braden’s case, it’s completely and unequivocally preventable.

This isn’t just Joe Public’s NEED to place blame, it’s a MUST, a HAVE TO. The system isn’t just flawed, it’s broken.

Something I learned from an orthopedic surgeon when my son fractured his arm wrestling is that A Fracture Is A Break. It’s the same thing. Sooo, when we say this system is fractured – IT’S BROKEN! Forget about saying flawed. A flaw is an imperfection that in country living is sought after with the logic that the flaws just add to the beauty, to the specialness. So NO our system is more than flawed if you ask me – IT’S BROKEN!

Charlie & Braden were failed on sooo many levels.

He murdered those children brutally and then the coward that he is killed himself so he would not have to face judgment on earth for what he had done. I can not blame the supervisor in any way. (GRAHAM, Wash.) — As investigators pore over the gutted Washington state home of Josh Powell for evidence explaining how and why he murdered his two sons and killed himself in a gas explosion, ABC News has exclusively obtained what is believed to be his final words to his loved ones.

Powell left a voicemail for his family just ***20 minutes before*** attacking his two young boys Braden, 5, and Charles, 7, with a hatchet and igniting a gas leak that blew up his house on Sunday afternoon.

“I am not able to live without my sons, and I’m not able to go on anymore. I’m sorry to everyone I’ve hurt. Goodbye,” the voicemail message said.

John Hallewell, who was Josh Powell’s best friend, says that Sunday’s murder/suicide was likely not done as revenge against his missing wife because, “all he ever thought about was himself.”

“Josh has his problems, but he was trying to do what was right and start a family and do all those things … I think especially once Josh moved to live with his father, and he just got a hold of him, and basically he went downhill pretty fast from there,” Hallewell told ABC News.

“I don’t think it could have been for revenge,” Hallewell added. “I think it was more a case where he thought he was in a corner and didn’t have a way of keeping the kids, and thought if I can’t have them nobody’s going to. I don’t think he even thinks enough about anyone else to do it for revenge.”

[- But to show all that even when POS murders his 2 young sons & commits suicide, there are some who will NEVER admit just what a POS he was & that ALL the HATE was IN POS] … [snarky ... POS is keeping a place for them w/him in HE77...]

Alina Powell, Josh Powell’s sister, released a statement on Tuesday regarding her brother’s death. “Josh and his boys spent more than two years being crushed alive by hate, harassment, and abuse. None of us could have anticipated the devastating tragedy that took place Sunday, but what this unimaginable loss shows is that hate will never end well,” Alina Powell said in the statement. “Hate kills.”

Cox-Powell’s sister, Denise Cox, told CNN on Tuesday she had been told by her family that Powell could be arrested within a few weeks and that authorities were attempting to build a case against him despite the lack of a body.

“We were all excited that something was going to happen,” she said, adding the family was hoping that a deal could be made or Powell could be coerced to divulge his wife’s whereabouts.

In recent months, the children had started “opening up and talking tmy parents about what happened that night” their mother disappeared, Cox said.”The boys, really, once they started opening up to our family, they started closing down on their dad,” Cox said.

She said Tuesday the boys enjoyed talking with her about their mother and hearing stories about her. When the boys first came to her parents’ home, she said, they would not talk to anyone and would not show affection and told the whole family they were “bad.”But recently, they told their grandparents that their “mommy was hurt,” she said.

Authorities believe that by setting fire to the home, Powell not only killed his children — he eliminated evidence in the case of his wife.
“Those boys were evidence. Those boys were going to be evidence against him,” Troyer said. “You’re looking at somebody who’s willing to kill their own kids … killing your wife isn’t that much of a stretch from there.”

Despite their grief, the family is attempting to open up to the public “spreading the word on how wonderful the boys were, and how tragic it is, and trying to drum up some more attention” so a search for Cox-Powell can be launched, she said.

    On Sunday, shortly after noon,
–>Powell was standing outside his home”When they have supervised visits, they [the worker] must be within sight and sound of the child and all parties during the visit,” Hill said.<—

That 1 rule [so far] shows this 'case worker & CO' were NOT following the RULE that would of prevented POS from his SOLE presence w/the boys.

Additional, the 'term' supervised visit means the child/ren are NOT ALONE w/the person they are visiting …

IMHO CYA mode is in full force … 'case worker traumatized (??)' — WHAT EXACTLY do case worker & CO believe those 2 sweet innocent babes went through as their POS parent chopped @ their heads & necks w/ a hatchet & then set the house they were in on fire so they could DIE by fire & smoke inhalation??

in a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac waiting for a social worker to bring the two boys for a supervised visit, authorities said.

As the children got to the door, Powell pushed the social worker back, quickly brought the two boys inside and locked the door.

The social worker, who later reported smelling something similar to gas at the time, tried "pounding the doors, trying to get in," said Gary Franz, a deputy chief with Graham, Washington, Fire and Rescue.

**About two minutes later, as the social worker was calling her supervisor, the house exploded,** Franz said.

The powerful explosion shook houses, with debris landing on lawns blocks away.

    Qs:
IF POS left 'his final voice mail 20mins BEFORE — WHY did not just one person try to CALL the POLICE/911 as well, try to STOP HIM?'

IF case worker was "pounding the doors, trying to get in" & "About two minutes later, as the social worker was calling her supervisor, the house exploded" — begs the Q "How much time was wasted NOT calling 911 immediately??? What the he77 warrants ACTION from that woman???

Another Q for case worker, "Was it 'normal/common for POS to be standing OUTSIDE waiting for the boys arrival?? Did she not have ANY sense that 'things' were NOT RIGHT???

Since, "The social worker, who ***later reported*** smelling something similar to gas at the time" did NOT respond immediately to THAT SMELL as DANGER … WHAT EXACTLY does/would get THAT case worker to REACT??

IMO POS had this case worker 'style' of work ethic down pat … he knew he had the time to do ALL he wanted to do and it would be PAST the point of rescue for the boys by the time others could get involved.

I am in agreement this 'case worker' should @ the very least be 'relieved of her duties' & the contract co should have their contract revoked.

Charlie & Braden's murders were preventable on that woman's watch & by being an employee of the contracted co, she represents them & their pratices … Yes POS murdered Charlie & Braden BUT they [case worker & Co] gave him the non-restricted access by the very fact their OWN RULE was NOT being FOLLOWED:

**”When they have supervised visits, they [the worker] must be within sight and sound of the child and all parties during the visit,” Hill said.**

That 1 rule [so far] shows this 'case worker & CO' were NOT following the RULE that would of prevented POS from his SOLE presence w/the boys.

Alina Cox needs a stiff reality check.

Hate does not kill people, people do, and Hate did not kill her sister in law or her nephews, her bother did.

He was harassed? Does she mean harassed as in the way Susan was posthumously by her father Steven in tandem with Josh? Does she mean harassed like Chuck Cox on the side of the road while the man was trying to find his child so he could bury her?

From where I sit, that harassment would have been a lot less public if he had told the truth about what he did with Susan so the harassment to all would have ended with him getting his privately in a prison.

It galls me to no end the complete and utter failure of nearly every family member (noted aforementioned sister Jennifer) and friend to find this evil prick accountable for anything.

He was driven to hack his babies because outside of this situation he was a normal guy and the public perception and reaction turned him into a hatchet wielding

They need to check the well and radon levels of the childhood home of the Powell’s, there must be some explanation they are all batshit.

So who got the emails when and what did they do?

  22. Titch says:

@Riverpearl – The first 911 call was at 12:13. I’m assuming that maybe the 12:30 time given in that article has to do with the explosion & the fire dept. Josh set the fire after or during when he hacked at his boys, but the smoke inhalation contributed to their death as well. That tells me they weren’t quite dead if the smoke had an effect on them. So if the explosion happened right away (as in immediate), then smoke inhalation wouldn’t be an issue. Where. Exactly. Was. The. Caseworker? How could she have been right at the front door? The fire dept was there by 12:30 or around 12:30. The caseworker was obviously close enough to smell gasoline but in all reality gas can be smelled from several feet away. There is debris in the neighbor’s pool from the explosion. So where did this caseworker park her vehicle and how could she have gone unscathed if in fact she was anywhere near that door or those windows? I’m thinking the 12:30 time has to do with the fire dept and putting out the flames.

    Also Riverpearl, you supplied this:
    Quote:
Thomas Shapley, senior director of public affairs for DSHS, told The Salt Lake Tribune that Powell’s visits with his sons initially took place at the network’s offices but had been in Powell’s home since Nov. 2. A decision was made that it was appropriate to have the visits in that setting, he said.

    Also this:
    Quote:
The state requires that all contract employees hired to handle such supervised visits have a
minimun of ***20 hours*** of training on child abuse, neglect, domestic violence and family dynamics, Hill said.
    seattletimes.nwsource.com

Me: 20 fricken hours? Are they serious? Most of the time it takes around 20 hours to pull someone over for DUI, test them, arrest & cuff them, drive them to the station, book them, run a check on them through the system, fingerprint them, take their mugshot, put them in the detox room, write up the report, wait a certain amount of time and release them upon writing up a release report pending court…etc. So where is the justification that a minimum amount of time set at 20 hours training is enough for somebody to act as liaison between a child and a noncustodial visiting parent? It doesn’t make sense!

Yes, you read that right — ONLY 20 hrs of ‘training’ to HANDLE SUCH SUPERVISED VISITS.

Q: is that in-person ‘training’, ‘open book web class’ -or-???

That isn’t even 1 full work week [40hr/wk week]!!!

20hrs “training” on child abuse, neglect, DV & family dynamics to handle such supervised visits !!!”

Notice there is NO mention of ANY higher ed classes/ training/ education/ degree.

FWIW – I’ll just say doing case management for senior’s I needed min Bachelor Degree initially, which was changed by my boss to min Master Degree which I was doing @ time -even though boss did NOT have Masters & her Bachelor was NOT even in ANY health related field.

So a STATE CAN have standards for seniors — WHY is it so difficult to have for women & children???

For now all I am hearing on TV is [paraphrasing]“… minutes before the fire, Powell sent emails to several people saying, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry to everyone I’ve hurt. Goodbye,” the voicemail message said.”

These children ran excitedly to see their father. If the social worker had restrained then and gone intro the house first, she would have quickly taken a hatchet to the head and their would be 4 dead bodies in the house.

If she had called 911 immediately and the police arrived instantaneously, they all could have watched the house explode.

I just hope that Karen Swift’s husband doesn’t get the same idea.

  27. Gypsy DD says:

Hi Blink..another sad ending for the forces of good.

Those poor little boys and the Cox family..just so sad.

I am thinking that the people the emails and/or voice mails were sent to may have been in church at that time on a Sunday morning and Josh darn well new that they wouldn’t receive these in time to change the outcome he had planned for his little family.

I am thinking too that if this was his motive that no matter where the boys had been he would have carried out a different plan but with a similar outcome. If the boys had not been allowed to visit him he probably just would have carried this out at the Cox home or their school. People as deeply disturbed as he was once they have an agenda to murder their is little that can stop that train. If he was as hellbent on this as it appears he would have found a way to carry out his final acts.

It appears to me the social worker was doing her job..we are talking about just 2 minutes between the door closing and the fire starting..and she did call 911..but unless you live in a heavy police area..no one is going to be there in 2 minutes..response times for 911 just aren’t normally that rapid. I am sure this lady is a victim of sorts in this too.

Josh killed those boys..not someone else’s negligence. As much as we have a need to say we can stop this type of tragedy I am not sure we could have in this case. A madman with a plan to harm himself and his family is just not going to reveal his hand until the time of the act is at hand. Certainly if Josh had been in prison this wouldn’t have happened..but there was not enough evidence yet to make his arrest. I think he knew that the time was coming and took the cowards way out.

Sometimes even the best intentions and the most care can not stop a madman on his mission and I do believe this was one of those times. If Josh was hellbent on murdering his sons and himself then he would have found a way to carry this out regardless of any outside circumstances. Short of him being incarcerated he would have taken this to this extreme no matter where the boys were. That’s just my opinion.

I hope you and your family are doing well. Thank you for the torch for those who cannot in this fight against the madmen of our world.

  33. Jnpgh says:

So many thoughts to the various elements of this horrific tragedy – that COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED!!

If 3-yr old Braden had done a picture of the family car for the infamous “Outing” (in freezing temperatures and after dark on a Sunday evening), and drew his mother in the trunk – then Jossh KNEW that both boys remembered things.

He had to get back custody of those boys to control their minds and recollections. But he KNEW that if the Court was requiring him to take a psycho-sexual examination (and also a lie detector test??), there was a good likelihood that he would not be judged competent. He’d never get them back.

And furthermore, the ax to each of the boys’ necks was not so that they wouldn’t suffer, but to be able to control them in death. Once the fire started, both boys would try to run …and he probably feared that he couldn’t catch them both. Plus- he needed them weakened so that in case he died first …they would never survive.

He knew that the boys rememebred about Mommie not coming back from the outing – and he would never be able to quash that knowledge if the boys weren’t with him. So…they all had to die.

Another news story also pointed out that the social worker was there only “to observe” and not to handle “security” WTF???????

All of these types of custody situations involve major security risks. I find that statement so infuriating that I can’t even be civil. If that’s how the state runs their program, they should all be FIRED!

THe ASPCA does a better job of secuing animals from abuse than our states do with protecting children who are at risk. What a sad, pathetic commentary.

And until we agree that parents who abuse their children should be subjected to fewer “rights” …these types of tragedies are going to continue.

I hope that they put Josh’s charred carcasss in a compactor and dump it in a landfill. That’s the only burial he deserves.

My heart breaks for the Coxes and the one half-sister of Josh’s who knew what an evil person he was. The rest of the Powell family (and Blink – isn’t it Alina Powell, not ALina Cox??) should just shut their mouths and slink away quietly.

I agree with you. I cannot blame the social worker. Men are naturally much stronger than women, especially when as angry as Josh Powell was. It would have been easy for him to push her away and keep her out of the house. Even if she was in the house, he would’ve killed her. The only thing I would’ve done different is call the police immediately when I figured out the door was locked. I wouldn’t have called my supervisor first. I’m sure she feels a tremendous amount of guilt, but I’m sure nothing would have stopped JP.

  36. Riverpearl says:

Nathan Leach, a Texas cousin of Josh Powell’s who was among those to receive communication from Powell minutes before the fire, defended his cousin on Monday. Leach said a cyberbullying campaign against Powell pushed him over the edge.

Leach on Monday contacted the FBI with screenshots taken from the “Where is Susan Powell?” and “Friends and Family of Susan Powell” Facebook pages in recent months and asked the agency to investigate whether people were contacting Child Protective Services with bogus claims so Josh Powell’s children would be taken away from him.

He cited a posting by one Facebook user who wrote, “Who wants to rattle their cages even more and call CPS [Child Protective Services] on Josh and Steve [Josh Powell’s father] to look in on the boys?” The posting received three “likes” on Facebook and was followed by comments that included, “I know it’s been done already a few times, but sure why not try again?”

Leach said: “Josh is guilty of the final act, but there are people who are responsible for bringing him there and they need to answer for it. I’m worried this is just going to be ‘case closed.’ And that thought be a very convenient conclusion to all of this. Nobody would pay for what they’ve done to bring it here.”

Ayn S. Dietrich, a public affairs specialist with the FBI’s Seattle office, said she couldn’t comment on whether there is an active investigation into Leach’s claims.

The attorney, Steve Downing, said the oldest boy recalled his mother being in the trunk.

“Charlie had been asked along with other members of [his] class to draw a picture of something they did in summer,” Downing said. “At some point he drew a picture of the family van. The dad was driving the van, he and his brother were in the backseat and mom was in the trunk.”

    Snipped:
Cox said Josh Powell did not permit the boys to talk about their mother or to mention her name.

    Snipped:
The blast shook nearby homes, rattled windows and spewed debris onto lawns located blocks away.

    Snipped:
The home exploded moments later. The social worker was not injured.

    Snipped:
Denise Cox speculates that Josh Powell drugged his sister before her death.

“I believe he drugged her so it didn’t seem unnatural for the boys when he took her,” she said.

“I believe he told them that they were going to go look for mines and I believe he buried her somewhere out wherever he went.”

–>>> Cox said from what she gathers from her parents, the Powell boys had been talking about how their mother went into a mine to look for crystals and never came out. <<<–

    FWIW- Mormon & death …

Under Mormon doctrine, will Josh Powell be in hell?

Some horrified observers of Josh Powell’s fiery murder of his sons are already proclaiming that Powell is in hell, while his wife and children have landed in heaven.

Though understandable, that sentiment seems somewhat presumptuous and premature — even for believers in an afterlife.

It is impossible, of course, for any human to make such a judgment, and it isn’t 100 percent certain that Susan Powell is dead.

And even if the critics are right in their overall assessment of Josh Powell, their vocabulary is slightly off — at least according to the family’s faith tradition.

The Powells were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that church has a unique view of heaven and hell.

Mormons believe that the dead are “not placed into a monolithic state called heaven,” wrote Larry E. Dahl in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, but are “assigned to different degrees of glory commensurate with the law they have obeyed.”

I want to know WHY the GAL didn’t think the fact that a psycho-sexual evaluation was ordered didn’t raise a red flag and didn’t petition for visitiation to stop or be held at a neutral location until this was completed in the very least. WHY didn’t CPS step up and recommend this as well?!?!?! I am aghast. Were they not paying attention? Was this “just another case” to them? My best friend is a prosecutor in the SVU and he and I had a very long and detailed conversation about this yesterday, I am going to post more later. This case renews my desire to sign up and volunteer for CASA.

I also think that when services in child welfare are contracted out through vendors, there is more of a chance for catastrophe’s like this due to lack of communication amongst other things, I guess I will hold my judgment until we learn more facts but right now I’m fuming.

If any of you would like to read about another case where a child was completely failed in what I can describe as the most incompetent casework I have ever seen in my life that also involves vendor agencies, I suggest looking up the case of Danieal Kelly (that spelling is correct, and her name is pronounced Daneille). It actually ended up in manslaughter charges for the caseworkers involved and happened in the county next to mine. The only reason I’m suggesting some read it if interested is because it shines more light on issues that need to be fixed, some of which apply to this case as well.

  42. OMG WHAT>>>>>This proves when you have or are willing to build a case against someone for Murder, MURDER!!!!!…..they had him under the radar, so what gave him the right to visit the kids???? Hello State Officials— YOU really screwed up on this one—–You need to protect the innocent children in the process of a unusual situation….come on, u had to know this….This wasnt a simple divorce case or something of that nature…but when you have someone being investigated for murder or there are special circumstances around that,(Freak show grandpa) why o why on earth would they grant dad visitation of his children…THEY TAKE KIDS AWAY PERMANENTLY FOR LESS THAN CHARGES of craziness..why didnt the officials know there was extenuating circumstances that should have prevented him having any visitation or rights to those kids. WHat is going on in our systems put in place to protect the innocent children. WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOCIETY also that is causing husbands to attack their wives and children….WHAT IS GOING ON??? this is not humanity…this is insanity. I believe that humans do human things…i have always thought that way…BUT my gosh, what happen to the default rule?? “Doing what is right when you dont know WHAT ELSE TO DO!!!!” We are humans, YES first and foremost before we are anything else…..and yes we are capable of anything we set our minds to do, we have all proven that….But murder….cant we be a little more creative and constructive than destructive…. and can people that are trained and designed and have special instructions to protect and serve our communities doing that….these WELFARE WORKERS are acting like hourly wage associates of the local youth organization, nothing special about dropping kids off after a pep talk….REALLY??? YOUR JOB WAS TO OVERSEE A VISITATION AND TO MAKE SURE THE CHILDREN WOULD HAVE PROPER SUPERVISION AND SAFETY IN THE PRESENTS OF THEIR PARENT….its a insurity issue….you couldnt even do that….INSURE THE SAFETY OF THOSE KIDS ALL ALL COST>>>instead you What? stand there acting dramatic (GOD this cant be real what is happening moment?) On the door step when the crazy daddy is snatching them into the house and got gas blazing out of every gas pipe oriface and unlite pilot light hole….You cant beleive this is real or can happen??? YES IT CAN! people do desparate things in desparate situations… and this wasnt a desparate situation…this wasnt even a common situation…This was a narcistic MURDERING manipulative freak for a father that had a freak for a father too and anyone that cared about those kids was trying feverishly to protect those kids against those without too much drama around the father and freak father…I Could see the writing on the walls.. all the walls…..I knew this was going to happen…..I knew it i knew it…… YEAH we are humans But, we dont have to act like animals…OMG, this hurts my heart, those little boys were so precious and innocent… I challenge every single selfish, self righteous human on earth to rise above yourselves and put someone else before your selves today….just once….A grandmother in line, , a child on the play ground,….., someone in a wheelchair with one arm ( do you have to stop and stare or can you just smile and help him maybe even say hello in a friendly manner), a checker at the grocery store ( they have a busy day), a man with a flat tire on the street (this is scary for some that have never changed a flat tire)…someone riding a horse along side a busy highway, naturally needs a little courtesy and respect…..if you see someone in need, call for help if you cant help him yourself or if you are worried to get involved. Let someone have your grocery cart when you go to get yours….I do things random every day for people i dont know….I have a few words in exchange when i acknowledge people, Hello, here ya go….and i let them have my basket when i am getting my basket….when i am parking my car, i circle and if i see another car circling too, i let them have the parking spot….Life is too short to get in confrontation about EVERYTHING..I have paid someones toll before behind me and when handing my kids a dollar in front of othe rkids, i have went around and passed out dollars to kids to ge tthemselves ice cream too…made their day, and i am not just for me and my own…I think of others and how i can make someone else’s day a little happier……. dont ever let me see someone hurting a child….I will go in stealth, cheetah momma mode! YOU JUST DO NOT HURT CHILDREN OR YOU ARE NOT RIGHT. What on earth is going on…THE RULE IS, kids are innocent and need PROTECTION for everyone, we are suppose to protect our future generations, they are not possesions we pawn off on others or broker and wage against…these are precious cargo of the future, teach them right and let them lead the way….Pray for the children… GOD please keep them safe. I sure would like to know how the conversation went between son and FREAK-SHOW-DAD when they were getting rid of Susan….I sure would like to know, who did it? Writing songs, claiming weird fetishes about his daughter in law…God have mercy on your soul Josh, u will need it on your journey into the depths of hell, the world will be a better place when your earthly pateral father joins you….

GOd rest those babies and Susan in a peaceful place under a tree in your garden…I pray for their comforts now. hugs everyone…. i am sad today, this is so sad- absolutely beautiful babies.. ;o(

IT is clear he murdered his wife.He would not own up to it and lead police to the body hence further downward spiral for everyone.A man who can do this atrocity to his tender young sons could certainly murder a wife. His friend is correct…….he only thought of himself.God Bless those boys and those who wanted the best for them.

The true test of whether something was done by the hand of God is whether sin was involved. God does not call a man to sin. That said I know that He welcomed the boys lovingly and perfectly. Their father can not hurt them again.

    @Riverpearl – Jinx at 9:21! Good minds & all that ;)

I’m not sure but I think the difference in requirements for social work involving adults vs children is that a child social worker might need more psych credits and more hours interning with children. I live in NJ & I know each state is different, but I do think all states should have the requirement of more psych credits & trauma awareness when dealing with children. Am I on the right track? I still cannot fathom how they could only require -> 20 <- hours of prior learning in order to obtain a position of liaison for visitation. It should even be more for fostering or adopting children! I'm pissed. That's just so ridiculous. I mean seriously?

  48. Rose says:

imo Coxes lacked standing for a TRO for any but themselves.
temp custody for boys resided in the State.
    Coxes were a placement.
