Erika Megan Sharpton Murder: Suspect Match Identified In CODIS Warrants Immediate Arrest Or Public Warning- DA Says Wait

Erika Megan Sharpton, called Megan by her family and friends set out the evening of July 1 to interview for a new job on her only day off.

At 24, Megan was committed to her education in her nursing program and she was anxious to secure a position in line with her studies and gain some relevant experience.

Facebook Photo

Megan’s partially charred remains were discovered by a motorist at 1:18AM the morning of July 2, 2012 while observing what he thought was a holiday brush fire. Megan was doused with gasoline and set ablaze very shortly before.

Mercifully, she was deceased by that time and investigators believe she met her end somewhere else. The reporter of the grass fire who backed up twice into the gravel pull off area for a closer look identity has not been released.

Finding Megan was the start of the discovery of a deadly lure by a man who is no stranger to the law, and investigators know his identity.

Speaking on the sole condition of anonymity, a source has confirmed to www.blinkoncrime.com that Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Franklin County Sheriffs Department (FCSD) and law enforcement personnel from surrounding Coffee and Bedford counties have identified a suspect based on a forensic match to evidence found at the scene.

The starry and promising young woman who used to donate items and volunteer for programs that support the underprivileged and homeless was beaten, sexually assaulted and burned from her nude waist down. While several reports of her cause of death indicate blunt force trauma, investigators have not released additional details that would likely only be known to the suspect.

S. Christina Stoy,  Editor In Chief, reached Kelly Hale Sharpton earlier today and asked the bereaved mother if she had been given the information about a DNA match to a suspect.

..”The FCPD has asked that we do not discuss any of the case sensitive details publicly so I cannot address your question directly.  I will say that I met with the prosecutor Michael Taylor and expressed my great concern that an arrest be made immediately based on information I was told.  He declined and I showed him a picture of Megan and I and told him he could not allow this to happen to  someone else and this was Megan’s way of stopping this and I am frustrated with the decision to wait for an indictment of the man who murdered my child.  Chief Fuller and Det Chris Guess have been a phenomenal support and I trust them without reservation and I believe they are equally frustrated..”

Megan had two star tattoos  on her neck to honor her siblings, as well as three others.  She had refused a potential job offer last Fall because her sister was expecting and she was concerned that she would have to leave immediately if she were to go into labor.

When Megan’s mother Kelly saw a post on facebook about the woman found at the base of the bridge had star tattoos, she immediately knew it was her child.

Megan fought her attacker like a banshee.  A t 5’9″ banshee was no match.

On July 2nd in the afternoon, Meg’s 1995 red mustang was found in the middle of three forked bridge road in Bedford county TN. It was approximately 15 miles from where her remains were located.

Her neon pink purse, complete with her normal belongings, cards and cash was located in a creek off Fletcher Rd- apparently tossed from the bridge five miles from the Awalt bridge. A grandfather spending time with his two grandchildren discovered it and upon returning home googled the drivers license information to find a phone number for Megan. The good Samaritan was shocked to learn her fate and immediately called Franklin County Investigators.

Her keys, phone, birks, pants and undergarments have not been recovered.

As is usual and customary, police have interviewed the registered sex offenders in the area and have not commented on those results.

Editors at www.blinkoncrime.com have learned that one such individual lives within a few acres of the Awalt bridge location whose family also owns property in close proximity to the purse finding.

Will this be a situation that leads to a known and very dangerous predator who was allowed community supervision after an entire life of crime and felony convictions that include aggravated and sexual offenses?

Is their multiple family members with similar backgrounds living in the same home? Did someone familiar with LE technique intentionally try to point a finger at a fellow RSO?

He is in the system, he is dangerous, the public is at risk.

In my first analysis of this case, with few details, I though t it possible that it may be connected to missing Darden nursing student Holly Bobo as well as that of Michaela “Mickey” Shunick. Holly has been missing since April 2011 and Mickey was located deceased  last month after her killer, Brandon Lavergne, led investigators to her body following a plea agreement.

Lavergne is now serving a life sentence for the murder of Liz Pate in 1999 and Shunick.

Lavergne has every preliminary indicator he could be a serial and he has ties to the disappearance of Spring Texas teen Ali Lowitzer. He was interviewed at length while incarcerated in previous missing women’s cases years ago- he was on the radar for someone as at least capable of such atrocity but he would kill at least one more woman that we know of before his final lock up.

Investigators were not fortunate enough to have a CODIS match in that case.

What’s the hold up exactly? I might opine to all those hesitant prosecutors out there- an interim victim because you do not want the next CSI effect theory acquittal on your watch is not ok.  It will be on your permanent record and if that is not enough of a motivator imagine yourself on Nancy Grace explaining your “rationale.” Or worse,  to another grief saturated parent.

Arrest now, indict later-

This is a local. This is someone who knows enough about the area and it’s boundaries to plop three different crime scenes in 3 different counties.

He brought petral to light up the 4th in an entirely sadistic way and someone with that knack for overt display is not going to fade to black .

With no evidence that Ms. Sharpton was attacked at the scene where her car was found abandoned in the middle of the road and a hand drawn map to nowhere inside, the assumption this may be a disorganized offender escalation pattern by some trigger is a strong possibility.

Keeping in mind from a forensic standpoint that in an open atmosphere, it is nearly impossible to burn a human body before detection and in this case very little actually was.

The assumption that the suspect was nearby and felt he would be away from the scene quickly should be a consideration.

Megan’s car, purse and remains were all placed in areas of certain immediate detection when the dense wooded areas just yards away would have provided the cover and secrecy needed to stall her recovery to date.

This crime is the work of a dangerous and psychopathic killer who had every intention of being acknowledged as such.

This monster treated this child as a human flare-  waiting to present to a grand jury in a case like this is irresponsible in my not so humble opinion.

He is in the system, he is dangerous, the public is at risk.  Arrest now indict later.

Franklin County Chief Tim Fuller did not return a request for comment at the time of this publication.

Kristin Helm,  PIO Tenesee Bureau of Investigation declined to comment on a case where they are assisting and not the lead agency.

What is the reason for not making an immediate arrest? Franklin county is East of Chattanooga and adjacent to the Alabama border. Is this going to be another corrupt county like several of those North and East of this one?

I don’t know the answer to that, but I certainly would like to.

My thoughts and prayers are with Kelly Sharpton and all of Erika’s friends and families. As a mother of girls, and a nurse, I just can not fathom the blatant disregard for human life. My heart hurts with this one. I truly hope the prosecutor reconsiders and brings this killer in immediately. I am also praying for no further victims. What a scary world we live in. I just wish I could put my girls in a bubble and keep them safe.

Couldn’t it be that they are watching the guy closely and building their case. If so, it may have been better for him not to be alerted that they know who he is.

He is aware, several warrants have been served and also based on other information I could not verify so I did not publish. The public should not be at risk for any reason.

May God bless you always for your advocacy and work, Blink.

What is more insane than a person capable of what was done to this beautiful young woman? Not protecting the public from said person.

This is a glaring example of one area LE should be seeking continual improvement, ie… community protection from known predators.

I think LE would support that statement- they are bound by the framework of current legislations and I am entirely sure they get awful tired of saying I told you so.

This is eerily similar to Holly Bobo.

Could LE have the suspect under surveillance to see if he leads them to Holly? The only way that would make sense is if they feel Holly is alive which is highly unlikely.

The only parallel to Holly’s case is that they were both nursing students.

So sad, another bright young girl gone at the hands of an evil, evil man. I don’t understand how he could NOT be arrested. What on earth are they thinking? Are they thinking someone may have *planted* his DNA at the scene? RIP Megan and my heart goes out to your family.

  8. Jane says:

Did Megan make it to her interview or was that a hoax? Do her family/friends know the location of where the interview was to have been? Do her phone records show calls to the potential “employer’s” number? Also, Blink you make mention the person who discovered the fire/body “backed up twice into the gravel.” Is that questionable or just a fact you wanted to make known? My prayers for Megan’s family and friends. OT, glad to see you’re back – am betting your Mom is smiling down recognizing your strength and devotion. Thanks.

Much of what you are asking is case sensitive, and you read that Mrs. Sharpton was asked not to discuss whatever it is investigators have told her or them so I can only answer the gravel question.

I mention it because I could not get a source that knew who it was and I found that odd.

  9. Is a map to no where a term of speech? If not how did they assertain it was a hand drawn map to no where? I mean thet world is a bib place it could very well be a map to some location. The burning of the lower half of this ,poor wee girls body suggests an attempt to destroy forencics. An yet it was done in a location likely to be spotted very quickly doesnt make sence.Maybe the killer is very very organised an smarter than L E thinks..A discarded used condom could be very usefull to a serial murderer. With a hyperdermic syringe to place the semen and the fire to telegraph to the investigaters an attempt to destroy evidence .Evidence he knew would not be destroyed an the map to no where is his idea off a joke as he knows the d n a evidence will also lead them no where.

Figure of speech, it was in the middle of nowhere, but my guess is that it was a situation where she was told to meet there, in a very rural area, and possibly the person would then have her follow them.

This person is disorganized and attempting to appear organized as they perceive such a trait, possibly.

I have a sense that Megan fought back and he panicked.

WTH, LE knows who this guy is and is hesitant to make an arrest? Is he from a politically tied family or what?

    Blink,

In the case of Sierra Lamar, to date no body has been found and no evidence (at least publicly reported) has been discovered. And yet, as soon as a DNA hit from belongings discovered was made within the system they were watching the suspect 24/7. They finally arrested him and charged him with murder.

So, what is going on in this case? Different laws/guidelines between states?

    I don’t understand it.

    JMO, MOO

In Sierra’s case I do believe they were hopeful that he would lead them to her remains. I wish I had a better answer for this one- I don’t.

    Nursing Students
    Remote area
    TN
Victims items were scattered around to be found by searchers
Close to land owned by family members
    Perp knows outdoor area well

I’m wondering if there was more than one perp involved….someone waiting in a get-away car like theorized in Holly Bobo’s case. Megan’s car was found 15 miles away. That’s too far a distance to walk. It seems like someone drove Megan’s car to that spot and then left in another vehicle.

I see what you are saying Kim, but when comparing possible connections we have to start at non-subjective detail. Many of those thoughts are applicable to thousands of crimes, as odd as that sounds.

The CNN transcript mentions she was with her boyfriend sometime after 3:45 p.m. Does LE know the timeline of her events that evening with her boyfriend and after she left him? And that assumes her boyfriend is not the suspect?

Boyfriend has been cleared, he worked a 6PM-12AM shift.

The interview was scheduled for 8PM for what was believed to be an elderly woman with alzheimers.
Megan discussed this with several friends and members of her family and seemed to have significant knowledge about the woman so it has been discussed it is possible she met her through her training, but that is speculation.

I cannot verify this and nobody from LE is talking, but their is more than one suspect.

if there are search warrants, are these public record? what are the rules for search warrants and the freedom of information act? if yes, then are the name(s) redacted?

i am really trying to come up with a good reason for the prosecutor not to have the perp(s) arrested, or even one that people might let slide once it becomes clear. i have nothing.

No, not public outside of when media or citizens hearing scanner codes, etc are made aware of the locations.

In an active investigation, that data is not subject to FOIA prior to it’s discovery to an indicted defendant.

Calendar dockets are available online, but not individual so I am only going by what my other db’s can offer, but I have a concern that a recent plea deal with a possible suspect may be one reason a DA will want the cloak of a GJ indictment. The other possibility is tactical as it relates to a second suspect.

TN is one of the only states that requires an indictment or probable cause hearing to collect DNA upon certain felony arrests and to then test it pre-trial. I could see the possibility of one offender not being the CODIS match at issue potentially.

Regardless, their is absolutely no flipping reason to not arrest this person or persons.

Yes, I think more than one person will be charged in this. And yes, they know and have been told of the evidence against them so consider what a criminal does with such information about to be incarcerated.

Lots of plea deals and very little trials in those parts.
    B

And yes, when that happens we will all be wondering what the hell they were doing on the street in the first place.

  25. Kris says:

Yes, arrest now and indict later. He’s going to kill again and/or flee. Do they at least have him located and are keeping an eye on him? This really upsets me, Blink. Would it help if we (the public) bombarded the DA’s office and email, requesting (demanding) that he be taken off the streets?

I would never advocate intentional bombardment, lol, but as a concerned citizen if done respectfully, I think it is fair to speak to one’s feelings of public safety. I should note that TN code does acknowledge that violent and RSO do not enjoy the same right to privacy over the need of protection and safety of it’s citizens.

The DA is J. Michael Taylor and I believe he covers 3 counties.
    B

  26. Cindy says:

No. 25 Blink “Yes, I think more than one person will be charged in this.” Is this because they actually participated in the crime? If active participant, I suggest to the “ladies of Tennessee” to be super diligent until these people are under lock and key. May God help us, as this D.A. may have blood on his hands.

Such a very sad story. My deepest condolences go to out to Megan’s mother, family and friends. It sounds as if the DA’s office is building a case that involves at least two counties, perhaps three, and possibly two suspects. If the primary POI has been served warrants, I would bet LE is keeping an eye on him 24/7 in the interest of public safety.

I have to believe that as well Grace, although I have no confirmation of that.

The suspects know they are suspects and have been told so directly, but in my opinion, that puts folks with the knowledge that they are about to lose their liberty potentially, and likely forever- I become concerned for everyone around them as well as any LEO’s tasked with surveillance. I am not coming up with a viable reason for anyone to be put at risk because a DA wants an indictment first in a capital case. Not with a CODIS match.

Not to mention Megan’s family is aware of the news reports, this is a small community and the additional stress in their darkest hour this brings while they wait it out.

I do not understand if there is definitely a threat out there-then why can’t the TBI at least haul them in and get them off the street. These predators are out to do bodily harm in the worst way- what will it take to protect these young ladies? Do we have to go back to the “buddy system” we used when I was a Girl Scout?

Search conducted on house in Sharpton murder case

Posted on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Investigators working to solve the murder of 24-year-old Tullahoma resident Megan Sharpton conducted a search Monday morning of a residence near the intersection of Hawkersmith Road and Highway 55.

The investigators read a search warrant to two occupants of the mobile home and spent about two hours conducting a search. They declined to give further details.

Investigators from Franklin and Coffee County Sheriff’s Departments and the Tullahoma and Winchester Police Departments participated in a search Monday regarding the murder investigation of Megan Sharpton but declined to give details other than they questioned two people in the residence.

Taking part in the search were Franklin County Sheriff’s investigators Todd Hindman and George Dyer, Winchester police investigator Ronnie Durm, Coffee County Sheriff’s Capt. Frank Watkins and Sgt. Danny Ferrell along with Tullahoma police investigator Jason Kennedy.

Oh that’s his brother? They didn’t look alike.

I’ve been through all the listed RSO and have been looking for the right combination to this puzzle. Eg. Loving together or in nearby towns because there were at least 2, if not 3 people involved

Burning a person you’ve killed and raped, uh, I think you’re both going to be caught.

    Stupid and despicable.

JWT is tied to the Stacy Ann Mobile Park in Manchester. If one takes note of the verification dates of an RSO as it relates to TN law being not before 7 days or 7days after ones birthdate it would appear he got a visit on the 14th, the same day the trailer was searched, Fuller met with the DA and then apparently so did Mrs. Sharpton the next day.

They have grandparents in their 80′s just North of where her car was found, which to my knowledge has not been returned to the family although it has been released by the TBI to FCSD so the assumption can be made it remains in evidence.

JWT conviction for agg stat rape and sexual battery for an offense occurs this year, with several counts dropped via a plea deal. Regardless, what is this lifetime violent offender, HTO (3rd dui) doing out at all? He would be eligible for monitoring if that was part of his parole under the 2004 TN pilot act so does that mean if he is his boundaries are set or at least trackable?

He escaped from prison, and absconded twice from community supervision which technically based on the parameters established for that program he was not eligible for anyway. Their is evidence some of his crimes were committed with a family member, arrested at the same time for the same deeds.

RSO’s potentially after 2004 had DNA submissions, 2007 and 2008 for felonies, violent and some misdemeanors and we know that this CODIS profile is a match. TN does not offer probation and parole notes or anything outside of general dockets. I know a prosecutor must be present at the plea hearing, and their is some allowance for now prosecutor needed for misdemeanors

Hypothetically of course, that would mean if tethered (home confinement via monitoring device outside of work hours as an example, I do not know if this is the case except to say that I know the suspect is not on home confinement 24/7) a person on the pilot program would have needed help, if not, he still needed help to dump her car and transport her to the Awalt bridge area.

Obviously the ping study will tell the story as well.

Again, not making an accusation against anyone just providing publicly available information for those that would like to repeat the breakfast process this fine Sunday morning. I am so utterly sick at the scumbags running around our streets for reasons I do not understand. Three strikes law people- demand it.

My heart and prayers go out to the family and friends of Megan Sharpton and I am hopeful the next week results in arrests that will provide the answers her family so desperately needs.

Duet, Matthews and Felton all live near there but they may not associate with other offenders

I was in this area thirty years ago. It is very beautiful land and scenery, but the people were not those types with modern behavior. I can still see in my memory the small town stove works at 10:00 A.M break time with workers sitting on the wooden sidewalk in their soot stained overalls.

I didn’t see any evidence of drug activity, but that doesn’t make it not there. This is old eastern tennessee moonshine country. The new activity could very well be drugs as well as whiskey.

My feeling at this point is that this young woman knew something that she shouldn’t and they took her out to keep her silent. The burned body could be a message to someone else.

    Appollos, that was Duer, ^^^above.

    convictions in 2001 and 2004

Does anyone know anything about him and his whereabouts?

Yep, lives on Duer Rd in fact. Whether they are involved in what happened to Megan or not, I am particularly concerned about the Trull brothers.

Wrt the TN RSO registry, I was wondering if anyone was curious why the employment information is not posted for offenders- it is supposed to be under TN statute unless I am reading that wrong and that is what was repealed.

I have a short list I made up Trull was at the top, I put a star by his name. There are six others on my list, I put a star by Farris’ and Mathis as well. These are not gold stars. These guys are all scary as hell.

I didn’t realize Trull had brother who is also an RSO.

Not brother, but relative. His brothers (one deceased in custody ) are both convicted felons with a long criminal history.

ATG you could not be farther from the truth. Tullahoma is a quite educated little town full of professionals and ajacent to Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Google it. And I am quite certain this child was not privvy to unsavory information and therefore removed because of it. Stereotypes help no one.

Agreed, I think ATG was referencing the criminal element I have loosely been referring to, and who I feel ultimately be arrested for this heinous crime. I have never seen such convictions, especially recent where criminals are given such light sentences and career criminals who clearly do not qualify for community supervision programs as they are intended under statute. I would need to really expand the research and I will not the time to do that to compare it to other town populations but when I see what I know will be a convicted felon out to harm Megan that way I really think it needs a closer look.

I think Megan was lured to her death because she was hopeful to secure a better job as she was working her way through school and outside of that in fairness to ATG and others I have not released more detailed information and will not until the suspect or suspects are in custody.

Their was no risk in Megan’s victimology profile I could find with the exception of her pure trust of all kinds of people.

    and this guy?

Are these guys getting their *get out of jail free cards* because of the economy and lack of money to hold them? Who is the person who determined these guys are not flight risks? Good grief.

    Staring at the stars

My comments concerned what I witnessed thirty years ago. This area is almost due North of Huntsville, Alabama and certainly has changed in that period of time. What I do know from working with people at Huntsville is that they were impressed with the work ethic of people from Tennessee and were glad to have them in their work force.

The real point is the low level criminal element that has a potential to do ugly things. Good people can get involved by simply being in a place to witness something the criminal element doesn’t want exposed.
