Abemarle County, VA– On the 100 acre parcel of the over 700 acre farm owned by Nancy and David Bass where Morgan Harrington’s remains were recovered yesterday, there may be clues of the furry variety that lead to the identity of Morgan’s murderer.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a source inside the investigation has told blinkoncrime.com that questions raised here regarding private deer hunting on the farm have been verified by Virginia State Police.

Anchorage Farm owners do allow some private hunting members and maintains a list of those individuals permitted to do so.

From the time Morgan disappeared and presumably ended up in the hayfield, both archery and firearm deer seasons were in full swing.

Big Brother, or in this case Uncle Buck, was watching.

Camera

Blink, what is that ugly azz thing you say?

It might be sweet Morgan’s Ruth Cooper.

The Cuddeback Scouting Camera with Video and Infared technologies from Cabelas. This is one example of tree trunk and tree stand cutting edge technology that is motion activated with high resolution images on several settings.

Not to be outdone: The Moultrie Game Spy, which you can use to watch your prey like a surveillance screen in real time.

This is another example of the varieties that were in place the night of October 17th.

Morgan was found in a field, almost smack dab in the middle of surrounding tree line’s loaded with tree stands and tree cameras.

She was found without her camera and necklace; both of which have not been located to date.

VSP has been provided the list of known hunters at Anchorage Farm, and are in the process of interviewing them.

If you have hunted the property this season, VSP would appreciate a call:(434) 352-3467

Swiss Miss, archery season started Oct 3.

  2. Steady says:

Regardless of the exact dates of hunting season, many hunters use these cameras well in advance of the actual season. They set up cameras in various locations, reviewing the results to see where their desired targets are, when they pass, etc.

As these cameras are on the Bass Property, I believe that the Bass family could give permision to LE to simply take every camera that they find on the property NOW, without permission of the camera’s owner, to see what is on them. As the results from many cameras have likely been downloaded, we can only hope that the results are archived, and that the Camera’s owners contact LE to share their results.

Repost from last thread (before I realized there was a new thread):

Many of you know about the case of little Aveion Lewis in Roanoke, who would have turned 3 yesterday. (His step-father claimed he had been abducted and an Amber Alert was issued.) His body was found today in a landfill.

Here’s what a friend of mine posted on facebook:

“so sad … one set of parents are mourning their child taken too soon, while another parent put his in the trash. I just don’t get it….”

    So true.

No way and shut the heck up!?! I just had to go searching for the German lady (who says she is not a psychic) description of a “door” that was posted on another thread dated January 26.

    Comment by Löni — January 27, 2010 @ 6:18 am
“Dear Blink, i am from Germany and althougt i doesn’t speak and write à good english i must try to tell something.” (I have removed a huge portion of her comments from the middle of her post). “He stood by a door but this door was not wooden it was plastic with the shape of Wood on it, the door was light almost yellow.”

Her description has an uncanny resemblance to the pic Blink posted above. I think her original post is #367. I don’t believe in psychics but the minute I saw the pic of the camera I remembered this lady’s post. Weird isn’t it?!

STFU. I mean the door, plastic not wood.
Lol, freaky. I never thought of that.

I’m located west of the Blue Ridge. Most hunters in my area use game cameras BEFORE hunting season to observe game activity, pathways, direction & time of travel. The best game are usually taken early in the season, while both quality and quantity are at peak levels.

If the hunters in Albemarle County use the same technique as hunters in our area, the question of game season becomes moot. :)

    Correct…

Keep in mind the camera’s range and trigger delay. The Website above touches on that. Being that this was most likely at night. The effective distance would be reduced and trigger time slowed.

  9. St.Anger says:

I hope they find something on the cameras that is useful and clear enough to catch the BG and I hope the BG is going to sweat bullets over this. I saw a post about it on the facebook page. Once again way to go Blink, you are on top of things. I am still mad and sad though that someone could do something like this. I never met MH but I was drawn to the story being a metallica fan myself and I am so angry that someone could do something like this. Perp better hope the hunters don’t find him first before LE does…

  10. St.Anger says:

I don’t mean to suggest taking justice into one’s own hands, I am just so angry and sad about this, I hope they catch the BG soon. Rest in Peace.

Funny, PamTX about that wood-grain looking camera. What I liked best about Loni’s post was her description of her suspect having a “strong beer stomach” but not really very fat. Yeah, and I bet he takes his self-portraits regularly in his dirty, bathroom mirror. Omg.

Just one thought, why before Morgan was found, has LE been so focussed on finding her necklace and camera? how did they know these items would not be with her?

  22. SJC says:

Okay, Blink, I’ve got so many thoughts from reading the comments, I’ve got to organize–

    RE: Comment #49 “…the kiss”

I always thought the kiss with the friend meant the same thing: a pact, a resolution and a sign-off. My point being she knew and the other girl knew she wasn’t coming back. This guy called her cell phone when she was in the arena–one of my original comments around Oct. 20th on Morgan’s site states, “Someone called her in that arena and gave her good reason to leave the venue.” She knew her killer, I now think. Her camera is gone as well as her cell phone battery–that can’t be a coincidence. I also stated long ago that Morgan lost control of her destiny at the site of the purse on the ground. Do you think she was initially with someone she trusted, saw a big red flag despite possibly being a bit drunk, and then tried to flee? Parking lot? My head is swirling.

I’m speechless & grateful that a tree camera could have something on film. All the people, all the times we were boggled by no pictures of her that night. This leads me to another comment I made in the beginning on the Find Morgan site: I said the reason why there could be no video of her that night was because she wasn’t on foot long. I’ve never been sold on her being on the bridge–it makes very little sense. I’ve always stuck with the abandoned purse spot. It didn’t make sense to me to complicate her movements with dramatic scenarios such as staggering all over and haphazardly dropping it.

I’m trying to get to the bottom of where she was, I believe, kidnapped. I don’t mean to ramble.

  23. sherlock says:

Wow Blink, slam dunk on this!!
How ironic that after all the disappointing speculation about the security cameras at JPJ, now it looks possible that we do indeed have video evidence of the crime itself!!
Even if the resolution isn’t great from a distance, with zoom technology digitally they should be able to see a face pretty clearly. Didn’t know these existed.
It looks as if things may be moving very quickly now to an arrest.

  26. suz says:

I wonder if her necklace (and perhaps even camera) will be found once the property is searched. She could have snagged the necklace when being forced thru the woods, and who knows, she might have still been wearing the camera on a wrist strap and dropped it, too, en route. Those items could tell us which way she came in.

  27. rvrb says:

Comment by suz wrote:”Wait, are we sure it was hunting season? I think it starts later than oct 17, even for bows and black powder.”

B wrote; “Nope. I am certain.”

And then others wrote about black powder, archery, and the use of cameras anytime.

Let’s also remember that a farm owner can get a “nuisance permit” to kill deer out of season. It’s the sort of thing that folks in the areas — including a lot of my family and friends — do when they get deer browsing on fruit trees, etc. You request; the game official comes out to verify; the permit is offered. Permit holder can have others kill the pesty deer.

I confess I’m surprised to read that Bass has several people hunting on his land. But maybe he restricts their use to just certain parts of the farm — you know, away from cattle and homes and the roads.

It is my understanding Mr. Bass allows hunting on his land responsibly, and has a list of who hunts it. It is a very common practice. That is not to say BG is a hunter. The point is they may have info they did not know was relevant until Morgan’s recovery.

  28. suz says:

PamTx, woah, i hadn’t thought about Loni-with-an-umlaut’s dreams of the perp and the faux wood door. Spooky!

Come on, LE, arrest someone already!

  29. Judi says:

Boy, I hope Mr. Bad Guy is sweating bullets right now. If the fact that these cameras were there was released to the media and he saw it, I would think that there would definately be a change in his behavior now – acting nervous, antsy, etc.

Wonder if Mr. Bad Guy will try and skip town before it all comes down on him. That is why I hope LE has some idea of a POI and are watching him. He may move into panic mode now.

Need to confirm who really gave her the necklace. Now that we know it was not with her but her bracelet was, I really don’t think Alex gave her that necklace. I think Mr. Bad Guy did and he took it back after her killed her because “she didn’t deserve it anymore” in his mind.

I think thus guy IS dangerous. I think he has severe anger issues and cannot accept rejection from a woman. But, I think he is able to cover his anger with charm until he is ready for it to be seen, which makes him even more dangerous in my eyes. And, I also believe that if he killed once, he will do it again. LE’s statement about the people of Charlotteville not having to be concerned is probably because they knew what happened to Morgan was personal not random. And, I disagree with their statement that there is not safety threat. He will strike again at the next woman who rejects him. He needs to be caught, taken off the streets so he won’t hurt anyone else, and pay for what he has done to Morgan.

  30. Judi says:

Also not necessaily an ex-boyfriend but maybe just a friend who had an obsession with Morgan but Morgan seen him as a friend and nothing more.

  31. alexandra says:

May today be the day an arrest is made.

  32. Nagol says:

    I would like to add two things;

First, this morning it struck me that in days preceding the house fire in North Garden Mr. Harrington had posted on the Find Morgan website that in his opinion the next areas to be searched should be the 29S corridor and reservoir areas. I mention this because if the BG has been watching that forum then the house fire could be related to this case. Only speculating here, but if the BG thought the discovery of her remains was only days or weeks away burning the house may have been an attempt to destroy evidence.

Secondly, the game cameras are second to none in terms of capturing images both near and far, and in daylight or darkness. I know this because I put one up on my back porch after a series of break-ins at my home. To make a very long and scary story short, an unknown male was attempting to gain entry to my home (single female) not in an attempt to steal anything if you know what I mean. Any ways, he never came back, but I have very crisp pictures of the meter reader, UPS guy, my mother and several of my nostrils as I approached to check the images via USB connection. I urge anyone in any similar situation as I was once in to invest in a camera.

I hope with all my heart that the discovery of these cameras at Anchorage Farm leads to the arrest of Morgan’s killer. Lady Justice will find him though, that I am sure of.

Great Job and great suggestion. Lol at the nostrils

  33. AtotheK says:

    Ok Blink, questions.
Say that they are in fact these cameras at this exact area where she was found.
    Why?
I thought these were cow pastures.
No one hunts in cow pastures especially with cattle present.
That would be too risky for the cattle.
I could understand in a heavily wooded area but not this location.
And, if hunting season was in full effect with this high powered camera’s, why did no one hunt there this past season?
If they did they would have found Morgan sooner.
Why have these treelines equipped with these camera’s and no one views the tapes or hunts there?
Are these videos similiar to surveillance where they can be viewed from a residence or can only be viewed at the location of the camera’s?
Or is this all a scare tactic?

The cattle are fenced off from here and roam fairly close to the house, if you review the aerial, they are nowhere near this field. ( They are the little black dots near the cemetary).

There definitely was hunting there this past season, and there were definitely cameras. If this is someone that is “Indiginous”, why would anyone think anything of seeing a dark pickup with larger tires driving by at dusk until now, since she has been found there.

Yes, the 2nd link in the piece is a unit that is “real time” if you use it as such. IN theory you could monitor your camera, which in general would be facing this “clearing”. I spoke to 2 different people that know this land, one that has hunted it, and the other that has 30 years of knowledge of it. I am confident in these sources.

    B

  34. acho says:

@24, I wonder if Blink only releases this info in an effort to gather additional evidence, because they already have their BG (QUAKE in those trousers, Champ).

I do wonder, though, if BG still could be a hunter, knew about these cameras and thusly stayed out in the hayfield? Or perhaps a flash went off and he went for the field.

[You can change my handle to Debby Downer, I understand. After about an hour of woot-woots, this maybe reality dose crept into my head (I'll use my 3-yr-old's excuse: "there is a rat in my brain") ...]

How a propos, though, if the good, land- and nature-loving Albemarle hunters out there are gonna bring this BG to justice. A full-circle, earth-to-earth sort of thing. (Anyone else notice this property once belonged to Meriwether Lewis’ family?)

  35. Blink says:

Posted By Red Hill Local on different thread, carried by Blink:

I apologize if I’ve missed something because I haven’t had the time to read all of the posts. I did go back through some quickly to locate the exact location where her body was found.I grew up in that area and hunted/hiked through all of that area as a youngster before Bass bought the property. I initially thought she was found closer to the homeplace, the rental at the top of the hill where the students live, but now that she was found south of the Bass’s main house makes things somewhat clearer.

My opinion: Whomever took her there knows the property and knows it well. They entered, most likely, via Anchorage Dr off of 29. Yes, there’s a gate there, but it’s rarely if ever closed. They drove the main road back towards the Bass home, turned to the left into the field, drove as far as they could without getting into too rough or wet terrain. They then carried/dragged the body as far as they felt was necessary. The rolling terrain there would have blocked the view of the Bass home (if my memory serves me correctly).

Three different groups that would have known the property well enough to have done this:
1-students that had lived in the house and hiked/jogged back thru the property.
2-hunters that have covered every inch of the property while hunting
    3-possibly farm workers

Student tenants or their friends are my most likely culprits…my gut feeling. They saw Morgan at JPJ, offered her a ride and she would have been much more likely to get in a fellow students car than the some older man. My opinion is that he tried to take advantage of her, something went wrong, and it turned bad. He went to the most remote place he knew, dragged her as far as he could, dropped her body and ran back. Judging from what news reports are saying, there wasn’t much attempt to hide the body.

A farm worker would/could have done the exact same thing.

Had one of the hunters that hunts the property committed the crime, he could have easily driven a 4WD to the area and dumped the body, at anytime of day or early morning or just after dusk and never aroused susp. I seriously doubt that he would have left her in the field, but would have taken her to the woods and covered or buried her, where she would likely never be found. He would have felt the most at ease in that location; more so than the student or farm worker.

Entry off of Chopin Rd is highly unlikely. There is an automatic gate at the entrance, and the killer would have had to carry her quite some ways, go thru 3-4 barb-wire fences, AND in the dark, even IF he got thru the gate. Highly unlikely.

Oct 17 is in the middle of deer hunting archery season so whomever dumped the body, would have most likely done so at night to avoid the possibility of being spotted by a hunter or even someone hiking. A lot of hunting goes on around that area.

Getting to the location where Morgan was found via Red Hill Rd is possible by entering the gate, driving up the bottomland. This could have been done by a hunter, that had permission to hunt the property, without raising concern. But then it wouldn’t make sense for him to drag the body, or force her to walk up THRU the woods to the exposed field below the Bass home.

Start putting some pressure on the student tenants and I think you’re heading down the right road.

I held this with Red Hill’s permission as I was working on the tree cam piece, I am also carrying to that thread.
    Thanks for understanding Red Hill.

To follow up, students would be familiar with the area but not so familiar they would know about the cameras. They probably go to and from home, but rarely venture into the woods.

Glad to help B. As an avid hunter, I sure hope some of the tools we use(game cameras) help catch this guy. Plus, if I was the landowner I’d have a cam at the edge of the woods, past the hayfield on the left, pointing to the road. Sure would be an easy way to see who comes and goes to your home. I’ll check in occasionally to see if anything is new. Thanks for talking with me.

It is I who owes you the sincere thanks Red Hill, your knowledge of that land and this farm is invaluable. I would be willing to bet Mr. Bass takes your suggestion.

  42. mary says:

Now that the necklace has been confirmed not recovered, I’m thinking LE absolutely DID have pictures of her from that night. One WITH the necklace on (inside arena) and one WITHOUT (ATM or 7-11 maybe?).

I am of the opinion the necklace is “investigative” in nature and more tied to a BG than Morgan.

  43. Teri says:

What I can’t understand is why we can’t get the answer to the question:

    WHY DID MORGAN GO OUTSIDE?

I mean, come on…..the friends HAVE to know.

Why is this such a big secret?

The only thing I can think of is the friends knew who she was meeting – and this is our BG.

    Blink?

I agree the outside question is pivotal to the investigation.

I will take it one further. The understanding of how Morgan got outside, if they actually know, should absolutely be shared with the public. Why? Because if they don’t know one might submit someone was lying in wait, in which case, we have a security issue that needs to be addressed. I am a supporter of Lt. Rader. I feel he needs to back up his comments about not warning parents.
    B

  44. Susan says:

I think BG took the necklace because he knew how much Morgan must have loved the necklace for the mere fact that it was a gift from her loving brother and he was jealous of that relationship (any significant relationship Morgan had with another male). I would guess that he has attempted to destroy the necklace several times by now but can’t quite bring himself to toss it for good.

  45. TallyHo says:

Good morning all – these cameras are something that I know about – as we have a deer hunting ranch and use them all the time. My husband has both the infrared kind (black and white pictures – no flash) and the regular kind that do use a flash. I can tell you from experience that when you are out in the country in the pitch black of night if one of those (flash) cameras goes off anywhere near you, and it doesn’t really have to be too close, it is startling and very noticeable. I have been far enough away from the camera that it did not record me, but a deer came close enough to trip it off and I can describe the effect as almost seeming like lightning. He would have noticed one of those in his vicinity had one gone off – at night. I have this image in my mind of the perp frantically looking for the camera in the direction of the flash, if one had gone off. (I wonder if any hunters there had their camera stolen this fall?) But let’s pray that the infrared ones were in place, no way would he have been able to detect those. Another thought I had – usually one downloads the pictures onto a computer to view them. Some hunter out there might have a something relevant downloaded on his computer, or maybe even deleted something he might have thought was a useless picture – say of a vehicle, etc. My experience is that if it doesn’t have impressive looking antlers, it gets deleted, LOL. But on a more serious note, we have captured images of people trespassing on our property – even caught an image of a man joyriding our son’s 4 wheeler through a field. He was 100% identifiable on the photo. Let’s all pray hard here – there is a very real possibility that something could come from these hunters’ cameras.

  46. Bev says:

The fact that these cameras are involved may rule out the idea of a hunter altogether. Any seasoned hunter of this land would know that these cameras are there and wouldn’t set foot in the midst of them while committing a crime.
Or to turn a 180 on this idea…a seasoned hunter who would leave a body here might also return to these cameras upon remebering their presence and remove the images they may have captured…
Hope its someone stupid who didn’t know the cameras existed.

  47. Mom of a college student says:

I thought I read early on that the necklace was a gift from Morgan’s mother? Now the prevailing wisdom is, it could be from an ex? Would seem to me that if the parents saw the necklace at some point, due to its distinctive nature, that the question of “who gave you that or where did that come from or where’d you buy that and how much did it cost?” might have come into play, particularly if her checking account is overdrawn and she’s borrowing gas money. It’s clearly not a cheap piece of jewelry and if it was from an ex, it’s likely she wore it frequently.(As the chairman of the First National Bank of Mom, we have talks about what are necessities to use money on and what is not, I suspect the Harrington’s did too.) Might be one of the pieces of info the cops are keeping close to the vest.

Also, I realize in grief people say and do things they might not normally, but I thought Gil’s comment about “lovely bones” was a bit unusual. Unless that’s a regional colloquialism I’m not familiar with, could she have been talking to the BG? I’ve not read the book,Lovely Bones, and have only seen the movie trailer, but is there something that is a link more than the fact that in Morgan’s case and in the movie/book, a young woman/daughter is murdered by a creep and found skeletonized? Random thoughts on Thursday morning….

And, I agree. It was almost like he was protecting his city from getting bad press. I thought those comments of his were odd – unless he already knows something about the person that killed Morgan.

This is a MURDER. The citizens of this city SHOULD be concerned about the safety of the youth that reside there.

Unless this was a targeted occurance – and Lt. Radar already knows that.

As I mentioned before – I go all the way back to the VERY beginning of the events – the MOMENT she stepped outside – and her reasoning behind is key.

And, we’ve never been able to get an answer to that.

It doesn’t make sense. Or does it?

Just a quick question. Do we know if Mr. and Mrs. Bass, were out of town the weekend of October 17th?

That would be easier to explain if someone had free range of this land. Maybe he is caught on a camera…either he didn’t care, at the time, or he’s too stupid to know about them in the trees or he thinks nothing would be out of order, if he was there. He was allowed to be! Tenant (past/present), neighbor, employee, responder, friend of a friend of a friend?

Just thinkin’ out loud this morning.

I know it is hard to get a perspective if your not on the ground, but this “trac” of land is in excess of 7o acres within over 700 acres. Multiple elevations, etc, there are enough ways onto this property especially for someone familiar it simply would not matter.
