Caylee/Casey Anthony Case: Macaluso Out – New Discovery Released

Orlando, FL– Announced this Sunday evening, California Attorney Todd Macaluso will not be Casey Anthony’s Valentine; or her attorney.

Jose-casey-and-todd-macaluso

As predicted exclusively at blinkoncrime.com, Macaluso informed Casey and her defense team that he would not be able to represent her in the murder charge against her due to entering the alternative discipline program with the California Bar Association (CBA).

However, Mr. Macaluso has been participating in the ADP for several months. In fact, he has handled other cases, several of them, in the meantime.

Macaluso, dubbed the Madoff of Law at blinkonrime.com, had pending disciplinary charges against him he neglected to inititially disclose when he submitted his pro hac vice to Judge Stan Strickland last March.

Blinkoncrime has learned from a source inside the CBA, that Macaluso reached an agreement last week with the CBA to voluntarily take a license suspension beginning in April, for an undisclosed period of time, in order to avoid a disciplinary trial on the current charges brought against him last year.

Why allow him to continue to practice law both in Cali and Florida and all of a sudden pull the plug? New Complaint.

An additional complaint was filed last year that has reached elevated status within the CBA and became the “proverbial straw” as it were. It involves Macaluso’s distribution of a settlement, and the fact that he has already admitted the offense in Oregon, where the lawsuit is being litigated currently.

Hundreds of Discovery Docs to Be Released This Morning

Announced Yesterday, the State Attorneys Office will be releasing several CD’s of new discovery after 8:30 AM EST this morning. It is expected to contain video of the special Henkel duct tape believed to be the source of the tape found on the skull of Caylee Marie Anthony, and other documents and photos.

Check back to blinkoncrime.com for updates and links to the discovery.

Casey Anthony’s Top Ten Alleged Lies
    August 18, 2008
Alleged Lie #1 – On or around June 9, Casey told her parents that she had arranged for Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez to babysit Caylee so she could go on a business trip as a requirement of her employment with Universal Studios. She later changed her story and stated that she was going on a short vacation with friends. Meanwhile, Casey told her friends that Caylee had gone on a vacation with her babysitter.

  3. Out of Order says:

Blink said…”For me, I would not care if she ate a crust off of the last tables bread. The entire thing was occuring, paid for by her dead granddaughters ability to produce neilsen ratings and it will sicken me until I draw my last breath.

    However, your right.
    B ”

If the only thing Cindy had done to raise eyebrows was to dine on crab puffs while LE crawled in the mud to locate each and every disjointed, tiny bone of Caylee’s, I don’t think Cindy would be seen in the horrid light that is most everyone’s opinion.

But it isn’t the only thing Cindy did to raise eyebrows. It isn’t the only thing that Cindy did that was completely off-base for any supposed loving grandmother to do which caused people to repeatedly gasp out loud.

Cindy flat-out abandoned that baby, and to me and many others, she abandoned that baby not only years ago by ignoring and allowing Casey to be an ill-fitted mother, but she also condoned it and is still condoning it by tampering with evidence in more than one instance, LAUGHING about it when she gave LE the wrong brush. Cindy told the public to “get off their asses” and look for her granddaughter, but what was Cindy doing all that time? Covering up, screaming at the media which she was using, calling them a bunch of “maggots”.

Since Cindy doesn’t know how to behave like a normal, loving grandmother and do it with honesty…she should have just shut the HELL UP….for Caylee’s sake, to give Caylee some semblance of dignity and honor.

So you see, it isn’t just Cindy eating crab puffs that has poisoned her public image. It’s the culmination of damn near everything Cindy has done and said that has accomplished that…..none of which were focused on honesty, none of which were focused on Caylee.

Cindy left that sweet, innocent Caylee in the dust both then and now.

    Literally.

And I totally agree BUT the Anthony clan seem to have one itttsy bittsy tiney weeny problem with that statement: THEY don’t seem to have welcoming, supportive, family around….at least people that EXIST in reality that the ordinary human being can see! The “A-Team” have driven all away EXCEPT for the hangers-on and the paid help!

To everyone who’s questioning the ‘Foundation’ ……

IIRC, didn’t the Anthony’s sell their house on Hopespring? My point being, what is the NEW address for the foundation and why hasn’t it been updated?

    Hmmmmm.

  6. Nauseated says:

Are they claiming the house as the headquarters for the non-profit foundation? Will it be tax exempt? Kind of like a shrine/church to Caylee – all bow to the ALMIGHTY GRANDDOLLAR !!

  7. Sosad says:

    Ragdoll-
Cindy is still the owner of record on the Hopesprings house. See link http://www.ocpafl.org/pls/webappI/get_parcel_by_owner

Perhaps you are thinking of the Milsteads? I believe their home was a foreclosure in West Palm or somewhere near there down south.

  8. chica says:

Ragdoll that is very interesting , I had no idea that they sold their home. Maybe they didnt update because they are using the old house for an office? OR Its just a rumor. Now you speaked my curiosity?

  9. MJ says:

Out of Order ~ Amen to your thoughts on Cindy. I don’t feel it’s trash talking her when I (or anyone else) point out the glaring bad behavior. They eagerly sought out public attention with their taunts and demands, never backing down and once they bought round the clock legal representation allowed him to give a semblance of authority to their charade. If they are not ever challenged to justify their acts and accusations they are free to continue. By all knowledgeable people kc became bold enough to kill in great part because she was not held accountable and never had to justify anything. This time around at least others can press her grandparents to justify blaming innocent people, trying to thwart LE and using her death for profit.

Chica~ We (the public) wanted to support her and try to understand her pain but geez once the rager came roaring out blaming everybody in sight the fight was on. If it ever factually comes out, say thru DC, that they for sure KNEW that Caylee was dead long before she was found, the hate will be on them like they can’t imagine.

Beesknees~ TY and thanks for the links about Earmarks analysis over at RS. Your little avi always makes me smile.

Guess I’ll give it a rest (glory halliluyah) about Cindy. Karma will find her one day and open a huge can of whoopass. KC’s next.

    that was well put !
the maggots are the Anthonys (top maggot) is cindy. The most disgusting grandparent/parent of the century not the year thats way to good for her. She has lied, tampered with evidence like you said and has repeatedly tried to destroy peoples lifes in order to save her sociopath daughter from the death penalty. She was the one that planted that sociopath seed!! to many of caseys friends. She used them to get info on casey, she told them casey was a sociopath and used people. and than turned on them when LE questioned them. FOR EXAMPLE!!She used amy to find out where casey was and was nice to amy long enough to have amy lead her to casey. she told tony that casey would use him and she hoped he was rich.
The sudden change to support casey is because of her ineptness as a mother. She knows she is responsible in part for what happenned. she seen the arning signs and refused to get help for casey or caylee instead she tormented casey ! by asking caylee to call her mom! that is mental abuse and she dished out plenty of it. Evidenced (eyewitness) of some of caseys friends at caylees birthday party! cindy delibrately excluded casey from helping caylee open her gifts. Thats just some of the little torments cindy inflicted on casey, what went on there behind closed doors we may never know. I am not making ecuses for casey. I just think that the years of being under cindys control took its toll on casey mental health. caylee birth would be the begining of the end for casey at the hands of her mother.
Cindy now wants to make the world think she supports her daughter but shes not getting those vibes across to us.
Casey hated her mom more than she loved caylee and she snapped. Had cindy been a good role model and mother ! a loving nurturing not controlling sadistic mom! we would probably not be here discussing caylees untimely death. Casey hates cindy and george but more so cindy for the control and evilness and george for not having the balls to stand up to his wife and be the man that he should of been. He allowed cindy to wear the pants and lost control early on. He could have remained in law inforcement and retired with dignity but instead he has has meanual blue collar jobs because its what cindy wanted. You know theres something wrong with lee too displayed by his inappropiate laughing at the wrong times. Major personality disorders in that family. They make for a good case study. Cindy has time and time again appeared on National TV expecting sympathy and the platform. When she doesnt get it she begans to attack with her tongue. poison pours out of her mouth like a sword, the Anthonys could have handled themselves differently and gained the respect had they had done the right thing by caylee. Instead they lost their credibility and dignity. No one has respect or empathy for them! how can you feel empathy for mean, evil people you just cant.

They did wrong by caylee totaly wrong. They know that casey is guilty! evidenced by cindys postings on my space and her 91 calls and comments to a few she knew! but somewhere they were offered money to appear to tell their story and wham the porchlight went on! they began to realize that if they kept the story alive they wouldnt have to work. I mean who has someones name copywrited even before the bdy is found and the phoney foundation!! The boat goerge bought. Dont they see how stupid they look to the world. I think cindy turned on family memebers that didnt agree with her.

selfish!! not caring what this was and is doing to her elderly parents! embarassing and humiliating to see her making a fool of herself on national TV.

I pray that dominic casey has enough information for LE to charge her with obstruction of justice.

    Justice for caylee.

Replying to post #21 Sue, and noseyrosey-

Muscles do relax upon death, and both bowel and bladder usually do release. The stomach has two very strong valves at both the top and bottom end that control the release of its contents. In the case of infants or those with GI disease (GERD- gastro esophageal reflux disease) the top valve is weak and allows the stomach contents to back up into the throat and sometimes out the mouth. Think babies spitting up or those with severe heartburn. Most children and adults have healthy stomach valves, which allow us to be laying flat, or even in an upside-down position without vomiting. These valves may relax somewhat upon death, but usually not enough that stomach contents are realeased out the mouth or nose. However, if someone is under extreme stress or fear (flight or fight response) the stomach muscles may forcefully contract due to adrenaline and eject the contents out throught the mouth and/or nose.

There is speculation that Caylee may have died in her carseat as numerous areas appear to light up under ALS. I confess to being ignorant on what substannces as far as blood/body fluid, fruit, juice, food, etc will light up under ALS. Would appreciate any input on this.

Perhaps the knife was used to cut out the words from the pink Tee Shirt; ” Big Trouble Comes in Small Packages.”

Casey was so clever to take others words and artwork and innertwine it into her claimed ownership. Maybe she was going to originally use the cut out words in the form of a ransom demand in keeping with the kidnap scenario.

But, she did need ANOTHER day to put her ducks in a row since she swayed so afar of the “script” when she jumped wholeheartedly on the party/club scene. I think partying got in the way of her plans.

    Just a thought…

Pathologist: Fox News producer helped with Savio autopsy
Drew Peterson’s defense today tore into a prominent pathologist who declared that Peterson’s third wife was killed, contending he was determined to reach the conclusion to please his bosses at Fox News.

During cross-examination, Michael Baden acknowledged that a producer for Fox News host Greta Van Susteren helped him with the autopsy on Kathleen Savio by taking photos and moving the body.

  21. chica says:

    MJ
Your so right about her comment that if it turns out cindy knew caylee was dead beforehand. That is unforgivable dispicable.
I am not making excuses for casey ! killing her baby was no excuse to free herself from her mom. The dynamics of that home played a big role in what happened why casey snapped and killed caylee. Cindy seen the RED FLAGS!! but chose to ignore it, she held caylee over KC’S head to torment her even went as far as trying to have caylee call her mom not grama. For example the birthday party Annie mentioned that cindy again took control helping caylee open her gifts, excluding casey completely. That in my mind is mental abuse. we know that she repeatedly told casey that she was an unfit mom and psycho repeatedly. And we all know that its true but something could of been done long ago to prevent caylees death. I blame cindy for not being a role model as a parent for not trying to guide casey to get her mental health help but to do so would mean to say there were inperfections in her family and we all know cindy thrives on being seen as perfect. Cindy is a sociopath that gave birth to a sociopath. Caseys grandmother said herself that casey hated her mother more than she loved caylee. It wasnt just because cindy didnt babysit that casey hated cindy, it was because of the mental torment cindy inflicted on casey! that made her feel inadeqate, attacking her self esteem, therefore having control over her. This is something cindy did with her husband and her son. George couldnt be his own man. He had a job with (LE) but cindy persuaded him to go into business with his dad, that didnt last long before george quit working for his dad after a heated argument. than she talks him into getting his own car lot business wanting so badly to have the money that georges sister had from their own prospering car lot. It was always about what cindy wanted and how she wanted it. She has this need to control and when she cant get her way she seeks out to attack verbaly and destroy. I wonder if the heart sticker that she placed over caylees mouth meant did it because she knew thats the only way she would be free from cindy. she wanted to hurt cindy. At the onset of when this story hit the airwaves we thought that cindy was doing the right thing by caylee, evidenced by the 911 tapes and cindys my space postings. We all felt empathy for them, until we began to see cindy change her story to it’s old pizza! to someone must at the tow yard must have put the body there to it could be amy posing as zenaida to Jesse had a key to her car it could of been him to oh it could really be kronk.
When this goes to court and the prosecution begains to show all the times twists and turns the defense and cindy haven taken to throw so many people under the bus! can you visualize all the people under the bus piled on top of eachother geez. The defense will make them look like the fools that they are. We know the prosecution has years of experience handling such cases, as opposed to baez with a few years. Sure they have Andrea, but she has her own agenda and cant be there holding the defenses hand all the time. She must be tiring of his antics geez.

I think casey is dispicable and should be held accountable but I also think cindy should for her part in it. If thinking that what she was doing would change caseys feeling towards her she was dead wrong.

  22. chica says:

Back to Cheney Mason. There was some speculation on an earlier thread, that Mason Cheney, could possibly resurface in the Casey defense, should things go awry with the then, current team. We know now that things HAVE gone awry, So what of Mason?

Take a revisionist look at a video interview Mason did with CFNews13, I don’t know how to directly link on Channel 13′s site, so you have to link first to:

    http://www.cfnews13.com/Features/Caylee/Video/default.aspx

Then scroll to “Jan. 21 video link ‘WHO’S GETTING PAID’. News reporter Jaqueline Fell sat down with Cheney Mason.

Quoting CFNews13 anchor for this story,

“Mason says he wouldnt’ consider taking this case unless he got 1 MILLION DOLLARS UP FRONT”

  24. Kleat says:

And on Dec 12th, the same site has ‘Casey Anthony Motion Pt 1″. Casey is not present, but what stands out now even more than it did then, given the current staffing and apparent financial problems of the defense, is Linda Kenny-Baden’s arguments for their need to get into the crime scene and do preservation of evidence, to inspect, to autopsy and future DNA testing.

It’s not a long section, listen to Ms. K-B’s list of the costly and famous list of noteable ‘EXPERTS’, all OUT OF STATE and/or out of country.

“World Renowned Forensic Anthropologist… we have right now flying… she is on a plane right now from Montreal Canada, Dr. Kathy…..

“…Medical Examiner, … we have Dr. Spitz on call….”

“… we do have Dr. Henry Lee on call for that…”

“Dr. Timothy Huntington, studied and learned and is diplomate of …. studied under Dr. Neil Haskell…. etc etc..”

“We (the defense) would be glad to give access to the state, to be with us and our experts… (at the crime scene)…”

‘I do want to put your honor on notice, that we DO have Dr. Lee…. and they (state) are welcome to come and see with our experts…. just giving the court a heads-up on that….”

This defense had arranged, a world renowned Forensic Anthropologist on call since when? The body, unknown at the time of this motion on December 12th, was only located the day before. And she was already engaged, her ticket paid for, and on her way within hours.

This is where defense money was going to, yet they have not yet deposed this World Renowned Dr. Kathy from Montreal Canada. Dr. Lee has not yet been deposed…. etc etc.

They only had 250 grand for the defense fund, that we know of, and Mason says his retainer ‘up front’ would be 4 times that amount. What other money or promise of monies, was Baez banking on?

  25. MJ says:

Sparkling~ somehow i missed the comment from Karen that you referenced but both of you might have something there. She (kc) did seem at times to sort of have a kidnap direction she may have intended to put a little effort into, but ….. what’s a girl to do when there’s sexting, texting, chatting, dancing, cooking, clubbing, boinking, cleaning, stealing, getting inked, drinking, FB ing, playing hide n seek with mommy…. so busy . She doesn’t have the follow thru for even that, it’s easier to just make up more lies and hope eventually mom takes care of it

  26. Nauseated says:

Do you think Cindy ever wonders “How the (bleep) did we let her get us all in such deep sh!t?”

  27. dee says:

chica my dear friend, cindy is to blame for so many things, but in the end it is all about Casey and what she did, she had free will to leave and start a new and she didn’t. cindy is crazy as they come but in the end it is about what Casey did, what path Casey chose, Cindy might have drove the bus but casey paid the fare and chose the route, I hate the A’s behavior always will, and I hope one day they have to answer for the bus driving down the wrong side of the street, but in the end casey chose the path and it is about her and her alone when it comes to Caylee’s death.

don’t let casey off to easy by trying to blame cindy in some way, cindy knows what she did…we all do…but she didnt kill this baby, yes maybe she could have done things different but should a would a could a..didnt happen……..GEO too….LEO too…..but in the end Casey created this mess. Let go of this anger against cindy, let God work his wonders, she has to live with knowing she has no daughter to watch get married and be happy and strive on, no grandbaby to watch grow and enjoy and hug and love and smile over, her hell is here already for her mistakes, take comfort in knowing that…I do

love you dear friend, dont waste another minute on discussing cindy she is not worth one stroke on your keyboard

Ragdoll, I can not imagine the Anthonys moving. Afterall, Cindy’s probably planning to turn the Hopespring home into a ‘GRACELAND’. We’ve seen the shrine tour of Caylee’s room that she gave media a few months back. I guess the tour will come complete with the viewing of Caylee’s ashes….what’s left of them after she had all the ‘bling’ made. Cindy’s thinking of all the ‘dollars’ that a ‘GRACELAND’ could bring. Oh no, Elvis is not going to have anything over Cindy! P.S. To Blink: I’ve just recently started posting here. I hope that I don’t get my hand spanked for this one. Those people (Anthonys) can really bring out the ugly in me.

Another Orlando attraction. UGH! Thinking about it now, I wonder if Caylee’s room is disguised as a shrine to cover the ‘clean up’ job. I’m sure Cindy went through that room top to bottom destroying anything that could be used as evidence. Just a thought.

Anyways, I’m personally done with trying to analyze that family. The process is an energy sucker and I don’t want to waste any more time thinking about them. I’m focusing on Caylee getting the justice she deserves! In other words, ~God’s will~. There is another kind of justice that trumps our own and it come down as the fist of God.

  31. MJ says:

Kleat and all, thanks for revisiting the money and roster of experts unknowns. It really stuns me that the defense was so quickly aware or advised that this case could be worth major pay out. KC was nobody, easily proved kind of slutty, sadly mothers “lose” their kids a lot and sadly mothers murder their children on a regular basis. The girl that killed her little one in Northside, Ca. (i think) was just as cute as kc, lived at home, said she was assaulted, baby taken etc…why wasn’t her story catapulted to national attention? Why when and how did this evolve into the mega story that it is?
Was the thing groomed from the beginning or was it just luck? How did a bumbling idiot (JB) manage to turn this into an event?

  35. Sosad says:

    Janice-

You have hit on a very interesting point. In Orange County, you may run a business out of your home, but with restrictions. There cannot be any foot traffic or clients that go to your residence for the business. I know this because I live in Orange County, have a business license for a business I run out of my home, and those were BOLD TYPE conditions on the application and on my license.

That said, I checked the business license website and there is NO license for the CMAF, nor any license whatsoever for their address, though there are other businesses with licenses on Hopespring Drive.

So they are not breaking any rules with running the foundation from the home, but they didn’t bother applying for a license so therefore are running an illegal business. Foundations need a license just like anyone else.

    Who wants to report this?

  36. chica says:

    MJ
Hahahaa bumbling idiot! I have referred ro him as a pscho babbling idiot !!! drippin wet behind the ears.

  37. Kleat says:

MJ, thanks, and I’ve been wondering too, you wrote: “Why when and how did this evolve into the mega story that it is?”

There’s things that don’t add up. The level of protest, how it grew into what it was, how the family members just did not stay in their home and back yard, and walk out with dignity instead of hammers and baseball bats, and with fight to toss lawnchairs and signs off the boulevard/public space. Let the police deal with the invasions of their property.

These grandparents egged on the protestors, and there were those who jumped on the bandwagon, those who would slam their own child’s arm in their SUV door and not so much as notice his pain. But was there a bigger purpose in feeding the ‘protest’, and perhaps the Anthony’s and their huddle too?

Selling a photo to the Globe wouldn’t be much profit unless and until the story was well hyped into a crazy circus scene, grandparents pummeled by rants and taunts of an active protest and when you have a mob, you can have things go wrong, all in front of cameras and it was ongoing. Reasonable people would have left the spectacle, it would have died down, but it didn’t. What would drive up the price of Casey’s photos of her baby?

WHO were the movers and shakers of the protest– were there people there driving the scene, pushing buttons, ensuring that the case would attract bandwagon joiners? Say, WHO delivered the pizza to the Anthony’s from that crowd? The protest could have been egged on to get the media hype Baez needed to max the attention and to continue that attention and focus on his client’s family and their perhaps, as we know now, staged behaviours as part of the defense team? The protest could have been one bit of insurance for the profits to the defense, and maybe feed the Anthony home with pizza too. (it’s well known how professional protestors find their way into ’causes’ they dont’ have personally, Baez would know this– he could get a few people to go taunt the Anthony’s, the Anthony’s could react on cue. These are regular people who we thought were in denial, they were not. They were in defense mode.

  38. Kleat says:

Would be interesting to know when Dr. Kathy from Montreal, was first contacted about heading to Florida on a moment’s notice, right at Christmas season, was she given a heads up that this could happen? That the defense knew they would need this type of expert on call if and when a body was found in those woods?

Can the FBI question this anthropologist, the ME, would they have to first prove letters of engagement to have confidential status? What is confidential about a date they were first contacted? That would show that the defense anticipated the eventual find of the body and knowledge that the child was not alive.

Can investigators get this information from such an expert witness, or is this client confidentiality too?

I think the defense had people on standby for the eventuality of the body being found.

Note that LKB was in Orlando and in court in less than 24 hours after the find, that’s way too fast to be last minute. Also, the motion requesting the defense be allowed in the autopsy was one of the only motions that didn;t contain doezens of typos and such, was filed very quickly and correctly, not a hallmark of JB, I think that motion was pre-written and signed and dated after the fact.

Can be asked during a deposition once the defense provides a witness list, until then the defense expert witness is a “hands off” person which is why the defense teams try to “tie up” well known specialists early in the process. It prevents the state from using that particular specialist as a consultant. The state usually will conduct the deposition once they have received the official scientific report from the specialist, then have the state scientist AND/OR ANOTHER ADDITIONAL specialist review it, form questions (and expected answers!) and then depose the defense expert scientist, asking all kinds of “interesting questions” including timeline, relationship & financial!

As usual, thought provoking questions! Prepping for the eventuality of a deceased Caylee might be the only intelligent pre-emptive thing Baez did right, grabbing high profile specialists, well, that was sheer showmanship or inexperience as he had no idea of any other practitioners to hire!

Regarding how an expert MAY have gotten involved: perhaps it was presented by a friend of a friend as many thought in the beginning: a young mom with a missing child in the Fl heat 31 days, maybe you can give them some advise regarding anthropological permutations et al., Dr. Kathy….and thus began the snowball effect of being sucked into this “neverland” or maybe it was “oye vey, have I got a storyline for your next book”.

    Kleat –

You pose questions we would all like answered. You have a great analytical mind.

The ‘grieving grandparents’ always acted in the most bizarre manor.
Granted we never how we will react in a situation …but…their behavior is so contrary to how you would expect them to respond.

    A very odd bunch !!!

Getting to know your death row inmate
CHICAGO LIT | Attorney’s book introduces us to those she’s represented

Andrea D. Lyon would like to acquaint you with the kinds of people who face the death penalty.

Lyon, who handled 136 murder cases, many of them as a Cook County public defender, thinks people charged in capital cases too often are portrayed as inhuman. To add some insight into who they are, as well as to tell her own story, she wrote Angel of Death Row: My Life as a Death Penalty Defense Lawyer (Kaplan, $24.94). The book ranges over her experiences, from her days as a would-be Atticus Finch eager in 1976 to get onto the public defender’s homicide task force, to an experienced litigator ready to hand over the torch to a younger generation of lawyers.

A theme throughout her memoir is her repeated discovery that the stories behind even brutal crimes can be more complex than they at first appear.

“People are a product of a lot of different forces, and they end up where they end up for a lot of different reasons,” Lyon said.

In Angel of Death Row, Lyon, who now is associate dean for clinical programs at the DePaul University College of Law, revisits memorable cases she handled while working in Cook County and later while on the faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In each case, as she investigates the backgrounds of the defendants she represents, she learns about poverty, childhood abuse, domestic violence or other factors.

But that often not is the image the public sees, she said.

“They are cardboard cutouts of evil,” Lyon said. “I wanted to tell my own story, but I also wanted to tell, even more important, my clients’ stories, so people could see that they are human beings, whether they are innocent or guilty or somewhere in the middle.”

Because her motive is not to re-argue the cases, Lyon has taken some liberties with names and dates to help move the narrative along, although she used the real names of family members, friends and many of her colleagues.

“With the exception of mentioning Madison Hobley in the epilogue … all my clients’ names have been changed,” Lyon said. “The prosecutors and the judges, all those names have been changed.”

Also, to flesh out her stories, she admits to juggling certain events around.

“I took some liberties,” Lyon said. “I would put a conversation with a guard in to help further the story in a particular chapter when that conversation may have happened in a different case altogether. But it helps tell the story of what I was facing, or what my client was facing.”

Some of the cases seem recognizable. The story of “Juliette Vega” — on Death Row for killing her husband years after killing her baby — is closely parallel to that of Lyon’s client Guinevere Garcia, whose death sentence was commuted to life in prison by former Gov. Jim Edgar in 1996.

The story of “Lonnie Fields” sounds much like that of wheelchair-bound former police officer Hutchie Moore, who in 1983 shot and killed his ex-wife’s divorce lawyer, James Piszczor, and Judge Henry Gentile in a Cook County courtroom.

Similarly, the trial of “Richard Waterman” closely tracks that of Robert Langford, who at 15 was convicted of murder when he handed a gun to another boy, who killed a gang member. Langford served 20 years. He was released, and then convicted of killing two people in a drug war.

In each case, though, Lyon found extenuating circumstances.

Vega, whose mother had committed suicide, was raped by an uncle starting at age 6, and at 16 was sold by her family to a green-card-seeking immigrant. After she married, it turned out her husband was violent. Fields’ life “was marked by poverty, racism, disease, poor choices and bad luck.” Waterman left home at 12 because he could no longer bear being unable to stop his drunken father from beating his mother, including cutting open her stomach and pulling “some of it out.” At 15, he was imprisoned with violent men who raped him day after day.

There also are cases in which Lyon finds that her clients were innocent, after all.

“The justice system gets it wrong more than we think,” she said, one reason she is proud that in the 19 death penalty cases she argued, not one of her clients was sentenced to die.

Along the way, Lyon talks of the difficulties of being the first woman to try a case for the homicide task force and the first woman to serve as a lead attorney on a Cook County death penalty case. She also takes some merciless shots at prosecutors and judges. But her primary goal is to introduce the reader to her clients.

After reading the book, “people who were in favor of the death penalty or weren’t sure how they felt about the death penalty come away feeling a little bit different,” she said. “They feel like they have some sense of who the human beings are.”
