Morgan Harrington Murder: Picture of Morgans Boot Released

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Anchorage Farm,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington | Thursday 1 April 2010 1:01 pm

Charlottesville, VA– Morgan Harringtons killers have not been apprehended.

Morgan was brutally slain, presumably, the evening of October 17th, 2009 after she went missing from the John Paul Jones Arena, located on the grounds of The University of Virginia. Her remains were recovered on January 26th, 2010 on the grounds of Anchorage Farm in Charlottesville, VA.

There have been countless witness accounts and reported sightings of Morgan since she vanished from JPJ, most of which, have been prefaced by stating “ or a person matching Morgan’s description”, so we are truly left to sift through what is accurate, and what is a well intentioned bystander.

One of the most conflicting item descriptions, is that of the boots she was wearing that fateful evening.

Below is a picture of the boot Morgan was wearing the evening of October 17, 2009, as confirmed by Morgan’s Mother Gil Harrington, to be “spot on”.

MorgBoot Boc

As you can see, it has no laces, and a cuff of approximately 3” that can be worn EITHER at the knee, or above, as reported by the witness who believes she saw Morgan walking away from JPJ with 4 men young men dressed in black, and again in the lot adjacent to Uhall.

Additionally confirmed to blinkoncrime.com, Morgan was wearing “footless” tights or leggings, which would require additional socks.

Morgan was known for the very distinctive socks she wore under these boots.

There is currently a $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction for anyone responsible for the death of Morgan Harrington.

Blink if you would please allow me to post some thoughts-

Hello to all of BOC- Hello to all the posters and lurkers that come here seeking Justice for Morgan-

I have been here since the first article Blink wrote on Morgan- I miss all of the posters that don’t post here anymore- Mouse -Rabbit- Fletch- Sjones- dakota- Questioner- Seeker- Cooper and so many others-

I welcome all new posters and those who seldom post- Miss Kitty- Hokie Hi- Dixie- Dar- Mojo -Eloise- Cosmo- HummingBird- Moonchime, all the moms- Slowroller the list goes on

I like visiting with all the regulars- Observer- J2K- Chad- justiceformorgan, Alexandra, Total Amatuer, susanm- ect

I know that Dr. Harrington has said that he values BOC and he made a heartfelt plea here, not too long ago, urging us to continue on here- Needing to be assured that our lack of posting as much, didn’t mean we were forgetting his beloved Morgan-

We all, lurkers included, stood up as one and voiced our never-ending pursuit of Justice for Morgan and our continuing support of Dr. Harrington and his family.

BOC is the forum I and many others choose to post our contributions to the fight for justice. BOC to me, is a welcomed oasis in the midst of an internet that sometimes is too volatile for me to feel safe posting my thoughts and opinions. I was first drawn here by Blink’s reporting on the Casey Anthony case. Unlike so many other sites out there, Blink did not engage in name calling nor did she allow others to call the Anthony’s hurtful names- Blink is human, she is not perfect and neither are we, her contributors. But overall, BOC is a forum where each posters contributions are welcomed and there is no flaming-

Dr. Harrington has said that LE finds BOC and these posts helpful. I am doing my part as many others here and also around the web on WS or FindMorgan or many other sites that other contributors find more to there comfortzone and liking.

I was just as let down by Blink’s inability to post the new article- I do not think she in anyway chose not to post it at this time because of malice, or ego, or hits that generate profit-I do not believe she is playing sick in order to put off the articles release. As a mother, I know how easy it is to catch illnesses- our immune systems are always fighting off one bug or another- We get tired and worn down- Blink is only human, she is a mom and she also works hard to provide us all with a place to come and share our theories and thoughts. At the same time posting informative articles we all so eager to read-

Since the beginning, we have all changed our theories and thoughts as new information as been brought to light in Morgan’s case. Blink is no exception. We have all went through periods of thinking Morgan would never be found and losing hope to thinking it was inevitable that an arrest would be made soon. So has Blink.

I think that we all here on BOC, and on other forums tend to think of Blink as The Wizard OZ- All Knowing All powerful- When in fact behind the curtain, is a person, no different from me or you, that has the best intentions and only seeks to help not harm-

As bad as we all feel about Blink’s new article not coming out- Think how she must feel- Not just Knowing that we are all in a huff, but that Dr. Harrington also looks to Blink and her articles for new information and support-

I think we, the people that seek out these different forums – to lend our help to the cause of bringing Morgan justice and her family peace- need to step back- take a deep breath and not think only of our feelings but those of the moderators, the family’s of the victims and the victims themselves-

Thank you for reading – and may we all continue on in our support from wherever we so choose to post- 421
We all want justice- we all want to end Dr. Harrington, Gil and Alex’s pain- Can we try not to tear another apart in the process?

    Peace 241

  3. Sunfish, your post gives me things to think about. Sheriff Fisher should appreciate your support! I hope Dr. and Mrs. Harrington don’t have to lead this ‘charge for justice’ … that’s just not fair; although they, more than most have the character to do so … it’s still not fair! I think Blink has “got” their backs. Maybe finesse is all that is needed! And, Blink has that! Don’t give up!

    Dear Dr Harrington
I think of you and your family daily just as I think of Morgan every day. I know you have heard this so many times but today I want you to hear it again from me. I have the highest level of admiration for you and for Gil. Your daughter was a beautiful bright star. You and Gil are part of the reason she was. Thank you for allowing us to get to know your daughter and your family it is a blessing to all of us. You will all forever be etched in my heart. I know today is a hard day for you as the protest that is going on is filled with so much hatred, yet you and your family are filled with so much love. I must say they are the ones to be pitied as they will not know what you know or have what you have in your heart and that is Love and Joy Dan. Hang in there Dr. Harrington, we are here for you and for Gil and Alex and especially for Morgan. None of you will ever be forgotten and we will remain here for you and your lovely family. The only way to rid the world of Evil is to shine the Light on it. You and your family have done an amazing job of this. Thank you. Just want you to know we are all thinking and praying for you today.

  5. Blue Willow via Mosaic: O/T Attachment Disorder. I believe this is in the news today. A Russian adopted child. I read about it on Yahoo news, as well. A friend worked in social services with a group of these children. Severely . severly abused! (in Texas no less). She got caught up and adopted one, already having three of her own. This boy was loved, she practiced ALL the techniques of the day to help him, etc., etc., with state back-up … to a point! He went to JP11 with her kids and my daughter,as well. He was a fine looking kid and he was SMART! But it was too late. At nine yrs. old he tied her younger son by the neck and threw him over the side of a bunk bed. Well, (the Great State of Texas) fought the family for over 3 yrs. They were at a loss emotionally and financiall by then. He then went to a Colorado Institution and is declared un-treatable! What happened to the adult(s) that did this to him? IDK, but to me this is worse than murder. This child will live in his pain of “soul-less-ness” for years to come. And the adopted parents that love him have to watch him die, everyday. I hate you have to experience this too.

Sunfish , I copied your quote here, I hope you don’t mind! I think you are every bit as smart anyone here, and I absolutely love your description of Morgan’s parents!

Sunfish — thank you for your post of this from the news station — I personally think you are very smart — and I certainly can’t keep up w/ all the research that’s done here — and many many times i have to go back and read something a couple of times — and then I still don’t get it (um-um — where IS our resident word sleuth, btw, ’cause I be missing my buddy, J to da K)

Sunfish, I agree w/ the author of this article you brought over — I think Gil will lead the way — poor Dr. H — his heart is so broken over this — and then having to face those horrible WBC “people” — two adults and a cuppla kids — all alone when he got in his car — and then came upon 100′s of VT students and townfolk — but returning to an empty house w/ only the reminder that Morgan is dead to greet him.

Gil, for being such a tiny, little woman, is full of fire — or piss and vinegar they say in Ireland — I want to be in that courtroom when Gil gets the opportunity to address the jury before they render their final verdict — together, she and Dr. H make such a great team — they are channeling their fear and anger and grief into positive energy to honor Morgan’s memory and ensure no other family ever suffers their fate —
they are much much better people than I am and I have learned a great deal about true love for your fellow man from them —

Sunfish, thanks for your great post and for your presence here — everyone makes our chain of justice for Morgan stronger — even those who merely come to browse, but join in our intention to find her killers and deposit them before Lady Justice. I wish your sheriff had been in charge when Morgan was first reported, too

    Peace, friend —

Sunfish, First, I was typing a response to your comments when the report came on our local news that Tim Davis, the male victim of the Blue Ridge Parkway shooter has died. I will continue with what I had planned to say, but I hope everyone will keep his family in their prayers.

There are several differences between what happened to Morgan and what happened on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’m not trying to defend our local LE here in Charlottesville, I have no idea whether or not Morgan’s case has been bobbled, bungled, or however it might be described. Morgan’s disappearance was not reported until roughly 15 hours after she went missing. It only happened then because Dr. Harrington was called by local LE saying that Morgan’s purse had been found in one of the arena parking lots. I’ve heard it was U-Hall, I’ve also heard the RV/Lannigan Field lot. Having no idea his daughter was missing, he called her apartment. I cannot imagine the horror he and Mrs. Harrington felt when they discovered that Morgan’s roommate had returned to Blacksburg/Roanoke without their daughter. By this time, I believe it was already after 12 noon. Morgan was last seen, if reports are accurate, at 9:30 the night before. There are no descriptions of a perpetrator, no descriptions of a vehicle, and it does not seem that the much hoped for and needed tip has come from people who might suspect a relative or acquaintance. There were two victims of the Parkway shooting. Thankfully, the female victim was not as seriously injured as her male friend (now deceased) and was able to attack the shooter. Hopefully she got his DNA on her person from her efforts to fight back. She provided a good description, and while not completely accurate, a description of the vehicle. A couple of good Samaritans happened upon the scene, transported her to the entrance of the parkway, only a matter of a couple of miles, and immediately phoned LE. The lapse of time was measured in minutes rather than multiple hours. Not taking anything away from Sheriff Fisher and his department, I think they did an outstanding job, but he said in an interview that they were very lucky to receive a crimestopper’s tip with a name and address. Apples to oranges with regard to similarities of events.

From what I understand, multiple jurisdictions including VSP and the FBI are now working to determine if there is any possible length between other unsolved crimes, especially the shooting of the two VT students last year.

  11. juliemooly says:

Sunfish, I agree with your description of the Harringtons. They are two of the strongest people I have ever seen. I don’t know if you are right about the shortcomings of the Virginia State Police or the U.Va. and Charlottesville City police as compared to Augusta County. Albemarle County police are the ones undergoing the firings, and I don’t think they were actively involved in Morgan’s disappearance when it occurred.
I think one thing that is unfortunate is the fact that the report of a shooting creates a greater sense of urgency than the report of a missing adult, unless perhaps that adult is a fragile elderly person with dementia. Also, the case of the parkway shooter was solved quickly because, as the sheriff stated, a tip was called in which gave details the police WITHHELD, that only someone who did the shooting or was told about the shooting would know. That is the kind of crucial information that has been lacking in Morgan’s case.
Unfortunately, one of the victims in the parkway shooting, Timothy Davis, has just died.

???? This could totally be “my bad” but as I am totally confused, could someone help me out with this? Did I miss something this week. Obviously, I did but never the less, any other reason for this move? I only ask because this makes what, number 3 to leave and then add in Tucker. Thats four? Is something happening to the UVA Men’s Basketball Team that we do not know about. Not saying they are the same ones that talked to Morgan Harrington but can I question it?

And, who are the ones that talked to her? Seems like this team is in need, indeed.

Suz: All in until somebody out, right?

Wow, I have been lurking for ages. Haven’t spoken since I got flamed for suggesting that that background in a photo on the BOC looked like a “grow room”. Not a meek soul either, but I am a firm beliver that you can often learn much more from observing than flapping your gums.

That said, I am kind of surprised to see that Ms. Debbie Baxter makes the comment that “two good-looking men spoke” at the take back the night event to support to the community and the Harringtons. OK, we all appreciate a pretty face, but what if the guys looked like the Parkway Shooter and had good hearts and supported the cause? Not trying to single DB out either as I’m sure we have all been guilty of objectifying people based on appearance. But, just like with race, sexual preference, etc., etc., don’t you all think that we can have a better society once we all start judging people on the beauty that is inside instead of that on the surface? Just asking.

  22. Fletch says:

    Mom3.0 –

Just wanted to let you know that I am still here, still reading, still caring. I check in on a regular basis, still hoping for a break through. I generally decided to bow out of the discussion because I don’t have anything factually to contribute and I got uncomfortable at the various times that individuals were called out by name or even initial. Not my style and not the conversation I wanted to be involved in, I guess (although that certainly did not prevent me from reading!)

I will say, though, that I have become convinced that this board has a lot of contributors whose kindness has shown through and, in the end, nice matters. I think that the rock painted by Skyler and the Morgan Rocks! aftermath that followed really demonstrates a tremendous act of support and love and it is clear that it has buoyed the Harringtons. Very impressive. In December, my father passed away and through my sadness I was very much aware that my loss could not compare to that of the Harringtons. I am not given to sharing these things with others, let alone on a message board, but I was very aware that I could have shared that with those on this board and would have been among friends. That alone brought me a measure of peace and I think says a lot about the kindness of caring of this Board’s participants.

I continue to be optimistic that the perpetrator(s) will be brought to justice and am not (yet) critical of the police investigation. Police work is hard work and results take time (this is coming from someone who tends to be very defense-oriented and will yell long and hard about any police malfeasance or misconduct). I still have patience on this one, although admittedly have a lot of questions.

I continue to have a lot of thoughts on the many issues that are brought up here and think that I will continue to keep most of them to myself, but one: Morgan was a beautiful girl and certainly should be able to dress however the heck she pleased — those boots are outstanding!

Fletch, your a sight for sore Blink. Don’t you dare keep anything to yourself.

My thoughts, sorry this is so long, please bear with me! I am home with a migraine and this has taken me all day.

Snipped from an article today: There have been a number of comments like this one on a facebook page called Hokies Against Westboro Baptist Church.

It says “Don’t go. These people want attention. If everyone ignores them they will go away eventually.” The next comment from a different article on the protest says what we all should really be thinking.

    —————————————————————————-
    >>>>>>>I believe Martin Luther King Jr. can shed some light on this situation: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

If you think silence means you win, you’re delusional. The WBC don’t want or need attention. They’re all lawyers, and they’re not stupid; they know the entire country hates them. They probably are well aware of the fact that they’re twisting the bible to provoke people, and I’d say there’s a good chance they don’t believe what they’re saying.. They want money. Money from lawsuits. It’s all just a brilliant BUSINESS. This is common sense.

Today was about Hokies protecting and supporting each other. The Hokies who were present and committed to peace and unity ensured that the WBC didn’t take any money from us. We proved to ourselves, the world, and the WBC that we are united, and won’t be broken by provocation.

    Today, the Hokies were victorious.

Kevin | # April 9, 2010 @ 3:23 PM <<<<<<>More Light Presbyterians is a coalition of congregations and individuals in the Presbyterian Church (USA) committed to increasing the involvement of all people in the church, regardless of sexuality. More Light churches endorse the mission statement:

…… the mission of More Light Presbyterians is the full participation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people of faith in the life, ministry, and witness of the Presbyterian Church (USA).” <<

Aha-that explains it then! Equality for ALL people, the WBC’s nemesis! I am not religious, but I highly respect those who use their lives for good, whether they are religious or not. Mr. Rogers used his life for good-always. And WBC persecuted him-just as they do so VERY MANY others.

    ———————————————————————-

I think what the above thoughts and comments point to is that if you stay silent and try to ignore people like the WBC congregation or others who are hate mongerers, etc-you are effectively sticking your head in the sand and saying-this is NOT my problem, and if I don’t acknowledge it, it will go away. Wouldn’t it be nice if things were really that simple? But they are not.

Again, as MLK says, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

I will not be known as the silent one who would not stick up for what I believe in, who would ignore the cries for help of the downtrodden, the oppressed, the voiceless-I will NOT be that kind of person-NO! And Dan Harrington is not that kind of person either as he showed today. He and hundreds of others peacefully counter-protested the WBC, because truthfully, how could he do otherwise? It was his beloved daughters name that this so called church (cult) was slandering. If Gil had been in the country, I bet she would have been there too. And if I didn’t live many states away, you can bet I would have also been there! Peaceful, quiet, insidious, unwavering, endless, unrelenting, determined.

And again, as Fred Rogers said, “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.”

NO, I will not believe that silence can get you anywhere near a resolution. I read another comment on an article and that person said words to the effect that there were two ways to beat a bully. One was to punch them right in the nose, the other was to confront them, peacefully, until it became evident that you would not be giving up or backing down-ever.

Sadly, that’s the truth. When I was a little girl my family lived in a bad neighborhood. I was beaten up, picked up and thrown, verbally abused and threatened daily by neighborhood bullies. I was so scared and so defenseless. My (single) Mom took it to the schools who proved to be of no help at all. She worked and could not be at the bus waiting for me. She was horrified, and she tried everything she knew to fix the problem. It wasn’t until my sister who was ten years older than me heard about what was happening and showed up at the bus stop one afternoon, that things changed. I was eight, she was eighteen, the kids who were bullying me were 10-13. She cornered the worst one (a girl) and picked her up by the shirt, shook her around a little and told her to pass it on to the other bullies that she and her much bigger friends would be watching, and were prepared to take them down, if needed-period. That was that. End of bullying. I even got an apology from that girl as an adult who said if she hadn’t gotten that scare from my sister, she would have kept up the bullying, but that being confronted made her think about what she was doing! Would silence have worked in this situation? Of course not. I had been silently taking that crap for months before I even had the guts to tell my own Mom! I was a tiny eight year old and I tried to be just like a little mouse so the mean kids wouldn’t notice me, but that backfired on me and gave them a victim that was easy prey-and easy prey is something bullies are always looking for. It is something that most of us would never figure out that we were even doing to begin with, that causes a bad person to want to hurt us. It may be meekness, it may be loudness, it may be our hair color, or voice, or size, or who knows what else. It is unpredictable and it is wrong, no matter what.

That’s why I agree with everyone on here that says, that no matter what Morgan did, or what she looked like that night, it has NOTHING to do with what happened to her. She could have just walked to her car to get something , stone cold sober, wearing a trenchcoat and she would have still been murdered, so please do not tell me it was how she looked, etc. And don’t tell me that Amber Dubois shouldn’t have walked to school alone , or that Chelsey King should not have run the trail in broad daylight in the park where she was killed, or that little Lindsey Baum shouldn’t have been walking home, at dusk, from her friends house, or that little Adam Walsh should not have been safe, for mere minutes, alone in a crowded mall. Because when people say things like that, they are giving criminals ALL the power and the rest of us NONE.

So quietly and consistently protest that which you know in your heart is wrong. Show up and lend your voice against groups such as WBC! Be a vocal participant to a Take Back the Night in your community! Join groups that are trying to get tougher laws on the books against violent criminals! Speak out for any people or animals who are being mistreated! Write letters, send emails, call or show up in person to voice your complaints about injustices, crimes, bullying etc! Because if you don’t-you may find yourself on the receiving end of one of those someday-and you WILL want people fighting for you-I can guarantee it.

    PS:
I like to think, and hope it will come to pass, that Westboro Baptist Church will simply, one day, implode upon itself from all the hatred they have spewed for so many years. This would make sense to me. One tiny fireball and then just ashes…

Thank you for your kindness and understanding. Too be honest, I have only learned my beliefs from my own failings. In my work I have traveled about the world and now I am just a middle age guy and a parent to a boy and girl in their twenties. I live in VA and both of my kids live out west. I can only hope that I have taught them well and I do believe that they have the gift of fear. But in fear I mean only to let no other person harm them. They have been taught to do the NYC walk in any city in the world. I think Blink might relate to that.

Mom3.0, can you please let me know the date of the initially lost comment of yours? The reason I ask is that I made a comment the morning of April 6th and it hasn’t posted yet. Wondering if my comment was made on the same day as yours. B, I know you said you had to do some research before posting my comment – are you still researching or did something go wrong with some of the April 6th comments?

jfm, I addressed it to you, the truck does not match, and yes, it is going to be posted this week.

Sadie Blue. Thanks for your post and desire to learn self-defense.

First step: Read “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin DeBecker.
Second: call your local Law Enforcement on their non-emergency line (don’t worry if they answer
“dispatch”..they wear a lot of hats.

My local LE uses a pepper spray 1/3 the heat capacity of mine. Why, I do not know. When I talked with the officers teaching my self-defense class, they said, well, it’s procedure to put your forefinger on the mace trigger. I showed them how to keep that cannister from being stripped from you and how you can utilize that object in a full swing motion to position a blow. You can’t do that with your forefinger daintily on the trigger.

None of us has enough money now but you can google classes in your area. Your local community college might have some…check with a women’s shelter organization, the YMCA, etc. Utilize the internet for “how to defend yourself videos.”

Whatever you do, start doing it.

(Cent Va Native) RE: My original post was MUCH larger and that’s way I wrote the preface that it may be boring to some. *Tip about posting here. If you’re doing research like I do (perhaps at work) with several windows open, copy, paste & save every few minutes, otherwise you might accidentally close your open window on BOC and lose HOURS of research you’ve included only to frustratedly have to go back in your history window and look at what source sites you visited and what tags you searched for in the first place in an attempt to re-piece. (Today I loaded keystroke software on my personal computer at home, so no more lost data) Anyhow, for sake of conversation, let me first say, I don’t believe Morgan’s final resting place was due to weather/rain/flood/snow/or animals. I do agree with you that I don’t believe Morgan was placed on the property to exploit Mr. Bass either. But I’ll tell what I do think..I think after the fact there was a conspiracy of at least two or more individuals who had knowledge that no one was home, and an assumption that Mr. Bass is just an old, blind, farmer would never probably check that area, let alone be able to see her remains in all that hay from way up there on that tractor. The fact is, if those individuals really wanted to make Morgan’s physical remains disappear, they could of by several means. Your quote, “innate knowledge of that tract, specifically that remote area of the parcel” I think is key. I think it’s important to not discount anyone or anything, but I do think one has to think reasonably and must know that although possible to complete this dirty deed by oneself it could have been done, it was not. Discarding her all the way out there took help and I think it took some time. This wasn’t the same as a murderer leaving someone for dead, pushing them out of a car etc. and just driving away. No, no, no. This took some help.

Mom3.0,Eloise,CVa Native Away; Good to see you too :) Those meetings videos sure are long, but I didn’t find them boring myself & I thought some here would find them interesting. I think at the least, I may be able to take some of what I learned and use it to my advantage while playing SIMCITY. On the surface, the deal not following-through sure appears to be due to what else had to be taken into consideration that didn’t make approving the deal beneficial in the long run in the realm of what taxpayers would be responsible for *land clearing, water/sewer, roadways (bus stops and traffic lights), extra FIRE/LE stations, equipment, personnel, and all the impact to environment studies that had to proceed first…3,100 homes and a good majority perecntage that would have had to have been deemed affordable….I just did my own assessment and guess what? Even at 2014 prices, this deal would have been upside down and ended up like a typical foreclosed, rundown, suburbia cookie cutter subdivision. I think we have to understand a broad array of issues and dynamics within the location, location, location, and this will lead to other important circumstantial clues. Remember, with DNA evidence, the same as fingerprints, there has to be some already on file to compare to, to match up. If not, LE has to have GOOD circumstantial evidence which will give LE probable cause to obtain a search warrant of one’s person for hair follicle and blood DNA samples…I know some days we all feel there isn’t anything new and significant to add. If it’s already been said or it’s regurgitated it’s okay because perhaps it’s something one of us missed before, or haven’t given a second look at. This is a collective effort. This site gives purpose and I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be researching in what spare time in this life I have.

    Above bolded by me.
It is the reason I chose this work, and as long as there are folks like you, who are willing to devote time to victims, I will continue to.

  37. MsL says:

Fish, I’ve wondered about underlying reasons for departures from the basketball team. Until I learn differently, I will believe that the departures have more to do with the new coach and his coaching style as opposed to the previous coach than to some other deeper issue. All of the players on what’s now last season’s team were recruited by the former coach. He recruited players who fit with his style of play and his personality. There was at least one other player who transferred before this school year started. I think it was obvious during the season that the new coach has a completely different style and probably very different expectations for his players, maybe not only on the court but in the classroom. I could be wrong, but if you’ve wondered about the departures, and I’ve also had questions in my own mind, then I’m very sure LE has their fingers on the pulse of the team also given the fact that several players (number and race unknown) spoke for a period of time with Morgan on the night she disappeared. I don’t know about the player discussed here so much earlier, but from what I’ve read, at least 2 of the players who are leaving the team plan to finish their academic year at UVa, so they’re not leaving the community immediately. I’m not sure about the high profile player who was suspended for academic reasons right at the end of the season and has announced he will go pro. Even if he has left The University he’s obviously not planning to disappear into the woodwork.

MsL – you’re right on the money with the Bball players. Landesburg was kicked off the team by Bennett for academic reasons and it was unlikely he’d be allowed back thus he decided to turn pro. Jeff Jones is the latest to leave. Every year in college sports, there is a mass exodus of coaches from one job to the next and the student athletes are caught in the middle with tough decisions to make. Most student athletes will ultimately choose their school based on the coaching staff and not the school itself. When a new coach comes in, he typically brings all new coaches, a new personality and maybe a new philosophy on how he thinks the game should be played.

Jones was a very highly rated recruit for UVa but he never seemed to live up to his potential. My feeling is that the lack of success he had seen added with the new coaching staff had him feeling that a fresh start somewhere else might be the way to go. I don’t know the motivation behind the other 2 players leaving but I feel pretty comfortable saying that last 2 were due to grades and simply not fitting into the program.

  44. suz says:

crimewriter, I still don’t see why more than one person is needed to get her there. Especially if Bass wasn’t home (but at this point i have no idea if he was or not).

I think of my typical AF trespassers (in addition to small packs of teens or pre-teens)as those weirdo loner woodsmen types who are content to tromp around in the dark alone.

BUT…most folks see multiple perps. I can just never see why you need more than 1 in this case, barring other evidence/clues.

  50. crimewriter says:

Fifty years ago, I. J. Breeden bought two pieces of land stretching between Old Lynchburg Road and Route 20: Biscuit Run and Forest Lodge. It was always his intention to develop the property, and Elizabeth Breeden knew that when she moved to Biscuit Run 30 years ago with her husband, sculptor David Breeden, I. J.’s son. “That was the deal when we got it,” she says.
“We tried to develop it,” says Elizabeth, a founder of ArtInPlace. “I can’t tell you how many plans are in the closet.”
The big problem: the property’s rural RA zoning.
In the intervening years, two things changed: Charlottesville grew to the south, and I. J. Breeden died.
“To settle my father’s estate, it has to be sold,” says David Breeden. Now, he and Elizabeth have succeeded in getting half the parcel into the southern “urban ring” zoned residential R-1, opening the door to development.
Breeden refuses to offer a number that he thinks the 1,000 acres are worth. “We’re looking for a price that’s reasonable for the development of it,” he says.
“Without doing any research at all, I’d guess between $15 and $30 million,” says Hasbrouck Realty president Lane Bonner of the Breeden property.
Up on Route 29 north, a 200-plus acre parcel is listed for $50 million, and another 150 acres has a $42-million price tag.
“The north side is worth a lot more than the south side of town,” explains Bonner. Even so, he scoffs at such asking prices. “You can ask what you want,” says Bonner, “but that’s way too much.”
Enter John Weber with Weber Associates in Manassas. He’s handling the Biscuit Run sale, and he also declines to speculate how much the land might bring.
“You think you know the answer to that,” says Weber, “but the marketplace is always the best way to dictate how land use will occur.”
And so the Breeden property is going to be auctioned. Weber will be sending packages out to people who’ve expressed interest, but he hasn’t set a date for the material to go out and when bids will be due.
And bidders must pony up a nonrefundable $500 fee– “to keep people from wasting time,” says David Breeden. “We’ll consider the bids, they’ll give us a resume, and we’ll have a consultant tell us which one is most likely,” he says.
Elizabeth Breeden pulls out an aerial view of the property. The Polo Field’s 150 acres, owned by the UVA Alumni Association, are not included in the sale, nor are David and Elizabeth’s 50 acres surrounding their rambling Biscuit Run house and studio.
If recent developments are any indication, Albemarle County will likely require a connector road between Old Lynchburg and Route 20. And with “neighborhood model” the county’s current mantra, plans could include some commercial to balance the residential.
“It’s a big project with far-reaching implications, from schools to transportation,” says Benton Downer, president of the Charlottesville Albemarle Area Realtors.
David and Elizabeth Breeden wonder how their totally private views will change, but without too much dismay. “We know Albemarle County takes years to give approvals,” Elizabeth points out. “A thousand acres will take 20 years to develop.”
And no matter what happens, the Wednesday dinners for which the couple is famous will continue, assures David Breeden.
“Everybody’s invited to Wednesday dinner. Put that in the paper.”
{Elizabeth and David Breeden’s Biscuit Run Studio is in the middle of 1,000 acres about to go out for bid. David would like to see DMB manager/Albemarle real estate magnate Coran Capshaw buy the property and make a sculpture garden part of the project.} -March 2005
