North Garden, VA– Morgan Harrington, the 20 year old fair-haired, radiant beauty, was brutally murdered after disappearing from the John Paul Jones arena the evening of October 17, 2009.

Morgan Bridge

Morgans remains were recovered the morning of January 26, 2010 in a hayfield on Anchorage Farm, owned by David and Nancy Bass.

Since Morgan was found by Mr. Bass that blackest of days in January, there has been rampant speculation about her last hours and how she ended up in the creek bed of total strangers.

A sequence of events and incidents in the days and hours preceding and following the January 26, 2010, discovery of Morgan Harrington’s skeletal remains on Anchorage Farm continues to attract attention from pundits and volunteers dedicated to Morgan’s cause.

Although naysayers point to a lack of a viable connection, and police have disavowed a link, others say emergency services runs to a nearby fire and also other responses which are  not supported by publicly available documentation has led to calls for more complete disclosure to eliminate any connection or chance of prank calls to misdirect or busy first responders.

The editors of www.blinkoncrime.com present  a series of events occurring in Albemarle County, VA that pose the question:

What the Hell is going on and what does it have to do with Morgan Harrington’s murder?

The Monsoons of Albemarle County …. PD

Ok, maybe I meant “The monsoor”. Karl Monsoor that is.

Former Officer Karl Monsoor had been tugging on the shirtail of ACPD for years before he finally left with pocketfuls of sunshine. Almost 500 G’s.

It is not my intention to be glib, it is my intention to say that as one of the youngest police departments in the country, enacted in 1983, this tank needed algeacide before this past March.

Death By Cop.. January 1, 2010

Colby Eppard driver seatColby Eppard, described by some as a cross between Gomer Pyle and cool hand luke, had the rawest of deals growing up in Greene County.

According to his foster-mommy-aunt, Tammy Harlow Cox, Colby was hit by a car at a very young age and suffered a brain injury that apparently served to shape his future of home upheavel and juvenile detention facilities.

Ms. Cox, to whom Colby Eppard was entrusted for a time as a foster parent, is no stranger to the judicial system. Tammy was arrested for admittedly having sex with 3 High School seniors athletes on the Varsity Football Team, where her own sons attended. The same school Colby elected to leave without his diploma.

Colby’s family recalls better times, and I don’t think anyone believes this is the last we have heard of this case.

Specifically under VA statute, Greene County Captain Randall Snead was out of his jurisdiction, both when he was called about Colby stealing the patrol car and the fact that he was in North Garden, Albemarle County, looking for it. It would seem the Greene County Roster could accommodate a deputy vs. a captain to respond, no?  Keep in mind, EVERY responding officer was put on desk duty pending the investigation, through at least February 9th, 2010.

While the attorney for the Commonwealth, Denise Lunsford has cleared all officers from all participating counties involved, none of the dash cams have been released despite requests through The Freedom of Information Act..

According to Ms. Lunsford, in an incident that spanned almost 70 miles and over 2 and a half hours where traffic was rerouted and stringers were used, Colby Eppard was allegedly wielding the 20 gauge Greene County Issue out the windows, not one LEO attempted to engage or respond to Eppard in an effort to get him to pull over, or negotiate his surrender at any time.

In fact, according to statements from Snead, Albemarle Deputies Fields and Marden, they were all in place on the south junction of 20 “in the event” he went that way, yet, they did not block traffic until after the stinger caused Eppard to crash.

My biggest question regarding this incident is: Did anyone ask Colby Eppard why he would take the truck and 2 rifles on New Years day ending up in Albemarle County?

Was it related to a New Years Eve occurrance of a friend, family member or associate of his? After Sgt. Hutchinson loses Eppard near the Nelson line, the next time he is seen is parked on Green Creek Rd, back in Albemarle.

What route did he take from 29 South to end up there? Was he seeking Red Hill Road where the overdose call came in to EMS the night before?

By all accounts he was a troubled young man with challenges throughout his young 18 years.

Additionally corroborated by those that knew him, he was never violent to anyone. There were over 6 Law Enforcement Officers from 4 different jurisdictions this man encountered before he hit just below Carters Bridge; 14 by the time the stolen vehicle ended up in the ditch.

Not one of them spoke or attempted to speak to Colby Wade Eppard at anytime he was on the police radio for over 2 hours. Was there an order given not to?

How is it that not one officer responded to Eppards threats, which were even being monitored by the media at this point in an effort to have a peaceful result to this situation?

Did Eppard have a cell phone with him and have the records been checked?

Cort EppardDid he call anyone, like Amber Rogers, his off-again girlfriend of 3 years? His brother Courtney or any of his friends?

In the preliminary release by the Virginia State Police, it stated Eppard returned to his crashed 2006 Ford Ranger truck prior to stealing the unmarked Green Cty car. If he were attempting to have a police stand off, why would he not take the two rifles he brought with him? He left his guns behind.

It also states in the report that Eppard is seen on the video from the STOLEN police car retrieving the shotgun from the trunk and loading it, how is that possible considering all the cameras are dash mounted?

Can someone explain to me how the officers have been cleared, but the footage of  both Eppards actions and their responses, the very evidence of the incident cannot be released? One of the officers involved, Caleb Marden, was fired for reasons nobody is willing to comment on.

There is only ONE way that is legal; if is part of an ONGOING investigation.

So what investigation is it an active part of?

(Editors note: If Mr. Eppard put ANYONE’s safety at risk through his actions, in the end, I say what happened to him was done to protect others, which I support. That said, as it was not so long ago a Virginia Conservation Officer was indicted for the involuntary manslaughter of a 16 year old kid whose girlfriend he was trying to grab out of his moving car, and later had the charges dismissed, I think it is worthy of conversation.)

Byrd Watching DungSmoke – January 22, 2010

Dung burning

James Byrd Gunn, resident or squatter at 5027 Stoney Point Rd, Barboursville, VA owned by Piedmont Manor Land Trust, was busted for possession of Marijuana with intent to deliver, and possession of a firearm as a felon.

In a SEPERATE arrest  on January 23rd, 2010, Jeremy Manning– Smith Manning Smith(JMS) with the cool  144 acre pad in Keswick, also indicted on 4/5/2010 , may turn to the fivefold plan to help him out. JMS keeps a cool $55K recession-proof wad around for emergencies. Mr. Manning-Smith is a long time composter, although he never really states what he is growing.

Lisa Powers, copperworks and the fivefold planners say burn the dung. They are pals, although I doubt she is securing his bond.

Cash Runs OUT.. January 24th, 2010

Jason Todd Cash, with NO CHARGES OR WARRANTS PENDING allegedly tries to kill a cop when he is stopped in Nelson Cty in a vehicle registered to someone in Buckingham County. Remind you of anyone? He ran from the scene, leaving the vehicle and eluded police on foot.

The vehicle was impounded. He apparently is driving on a revoked license, which county has that occurred in? We will get back to J-money.

NON Garden Party…. January 25th

At approximately 10PM on the evening of January 25, Albemarle County Fire and rescue services responds to a call at the 37 acre farm of award winning gardening and horticulture experts John Sauer and his wife Cathy Clary. It is listed as a tactical incident rescue and as of March 24, 2010 is still an open incident.  What was it? Who or what needed rescuing?

Mr. Sauer is the long-time gardner for Carr’s Hill, the residence of the President of UVA. Carr’s Hill was the former site of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity until 2003 when it was moved by the city to it’s current location on Culbreth. Ms. Clary is a horticulture proffessor at UVA, and most recently taught a home landscaping course which included a field trip the afternoon of Saturday October 17, 2009.

The Sauers are also members of Piedmont Landscaping Association, which is open to anyone in the landscaping field and the Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Interestingly enough, there were several fire alarm activations on the UVA campus on this same day. Faulkner House reported a residential fire around 4:10 am.

Threes Company,  Four is Combustible..Jan 26th

Sutherland Firefd

Sometime after 10PM, the residential fire at 3323 Sutherland Rd breaks out.

This would be the fire that is still an OPEN INCIDENT.

This fire,as you can see, was no curling-iron-left-on.

It allegedly started after the residents were asleep, although they had all apparently packed their belongings and were on a month to month lease, 2 had already moved out.

In fact, according to Peruvian vacationer and dog owner of Blanca, the pit bull that perished in the blaze, he was not aware of the fire until days after the fact because he was with friends in Peru.

Kevin Terlep

Convenient, if you ask me, as he has a previous weed distribution and subsequent traffic charge in December 2009.

Meet new pup to the left. In fairness to fair-weather k9’s of America, he was only asking for dog-sitting, and not on the lease.  Choose your kenneling wisely people.

The residential fire at the 3000 block of Sutherland Rd has some issues. For starters, you have the first press release regarding the possible accidental fire since as far back as 2003 before a cause determination has been made.

Additionally the release itself appears to have missed the fact that approximately 2 hours after the last apparatus departs, there is an additional call back to the property requiring 12 responders within minutes of the discovery of Morgan Harrington’s remains. They may have literally passed each other on Route 29; they definitely would have heard the dispatcher.

Sutherland

The former owner of the Sutherland property is buried on Anchorage Farm. A relative of the current owners has hunted the Anchorage Farm property.

The band in the image on the left is pictured practicing in the Sutherland home.

A firefighter, whose identity blinkoncrime is choosing to withhold, who fought the fire, without sleeping took an impromptu trip to New Jersey with his ..”aunt, uncle, cousin, his cousins uncle and a friend..” at 10:23PM January 27th, driving straight through without stopping and returned to North Garden by 1:45PM January 28th.  Through his own facebook postings, he spends the bulk of his time when he is not volunteering for the North Garden Fire Department at his cousins; a Toco Hill address also listed as the home for a recently released registered sex offender.

Retired Greene Sheriff Takes His Own Life.. January 28

There is no evidence to suggest that William “Willie” Linwood Morris’s suicide has anything in common with the Morgan Harrington’s case directly, with the exception that there are obviously folks that knew him as well as other individuals being discussed. I have spoken with a family member, and an individual who has known him for twenty years and by those accounts Willie was in deep discomfort from the tinnicus he suffered from.

He took care of every detail prior to ending his life behind the barn on his farm in Stanardsville, VA, including withdrawing the cash for his own funeral.

Willie Morris was found by Captain Randall Snead, who was allegedly supposed to be on desk duty until the Eppard case investigation was completed.  According to Commonwealth Attorney Denise Lunsford, that was not completed until February 9, 2010, almost 2 weeks later.

Cash is Busted on a Tip.. March 19

Not long out of Nelson County jail for a non-violent offense, Jason Todd Cash is being held in Albemarle County jail since his arrest around 1am the morning of Friday March 19.

One has to wonder if the tip about where Jmoney was hanging out on Secretary Sand Rd from his kin in Amherst.

Clint Cash, a registered sex offender was arrested in December on a felony parole violation and is facing some heavy time . His wife Donna, had just pled guilty to a misdemeanor the day before the tip came in regarding JT Cash’s whereabouts and received a suspended sentence.

Jason Cash was apprehended with help from Bink, the new Albemarle County k9 when the house he was staying in on Secretary Sands was raided and he attempted to stay hidden inside.

What are Coincidences… What are clues?

The aforementioned volunteer for NGVFD lives in same stretch of Secretary Sands Rd.

Yet another relative of Jason Cash, a registered Sex Offender, shares an employer with the cousin of “volunteer”, and volunteer; specializing in outdoor landscape lighting.

Colby Eppard was stopped in the area of Green Creek Rd that is a large parcel of land owned by  Cash family member.

As far as making allegations in this report, there are none. The investigation of the events contained herein are entirely based on public information and witness accounts.

I have come to the conclusion that while we cannot say specifically which one of the issues discussed directly relate to the murder of Morgan Harrington, a primary or secondary scene integral to the investigation of same, and the hunt for her killer(s), but I do believe the incidents need to explored fully in a public forum.

Dear Friends of the BOC Community:

I have not been away but instead I have had just about the worst case of food poisoning I think that one could ever imagine!!! I did indeed think I would die. But I am back and ready to go. Still a tad bit weak but ready none-the-less.

Let me first, say that I was not only humbled but honored to be standing on that bridge of COPE!
I was coping, smiling, crying, excited, and yes, scared. Not for myself but for the Harrington Family. I want them to have the resolution of knowing that the last moments of their precious daughter’s life will not be in vain and will be accounted for.

I am scared that this will never be solved. That he/she/they will walk amongst us for a very long time and they will not be accounted for!!
No, not because we do not have people who do not care. Met some that care a ton, absolutely a shitton of epic weight proportions. Love and hugs to you all there and those that couldn’t be. I held you all in my heart. I saw the footprint left there of “Morgan’s Warriors”. What an incredible group of people, they too, must be.

Blink, you especially were held in grace for giving us all a open forum of discussion. The committment, drive, and dedication of you, your team, and your contributors to your home of Blink On Crime, gives me a moment of pause and humility that has me bewildered. I feel that I will not be able to ever contribute something that will solve the murder of Morgan Harrington but I will be able to continue her voice.
I will be the voice of the victims everywhere not just of my family.
    I am silent, no more!

I walked in Morgan’s shoes, covered that ground and came back and did it again. Give me the answer why she was outside in the first place. As far as I see it what went on inside is clearly why things started to unravel on the outside!
What took her outside of The John Paul Jones Arena and ping-ponging across those lots and over that bridge?

What else can I do but be supportive, question, ponder, send Blink biscuits of support but this is it???

***I want more. Everyone should want more for Morgan!

It absolutely boggles my mind that if he/they are not that smart and Morgan’s death was an out of control moment of rage…why then cannot the incrediable minds of the Virginia State Police and the extended law community figure this one out??? Or have they? I can only support but really this bridge should be connecting us from point A of Morgan’s night to point B, not leaving us heading to no where!

In regards to the mess of the certain County Police Departments and individuals therein.
My dears, I am so sorry about your luck BUT I am beginning to think a clean sweep of your departments is needed. Call it early retirement for some, new career choices for others, and well, just shitcan the rest!
Maybe we need to have a Grand Jury convened on you as maybe it is one of you that is involved in Morgan’s death!!!
I don’t know so I question your authority. How can I not?
My own kid asks, “Momma, maybe it was someone pretending to be a cop?” Please, he is just a kid and is asking this. He said it again, as I burned fries to a crisp and the fire department responds. It triggered my son to say it again, “Maybe someone was pretending to flash a badge” or maybe then I wonder…was he off-duty?

As I sit here my thoughts go to what I will call, silly enough, my life community. What are we willing to accept? A brutally murdered girl, cops that run all over VA guns ablazin’, inept police that are receiving bonuses on the job while on other people’s property, houses burned to the ground that are unexplained to date, another kid dead hangin’ outside of a squad car, the drugs and underage drinking so apparent on the web, and yes, back to the murdered girl found in the area where all of the above takes place!

I want that doctor and his wife to look into their son’s eyes and say she was not alone! They helped and loved our girl even though they never knew her. They did not leave her, they ARE her friends!
This is very important people…It is not about crazy or obsessed or being crazily-obsessed. It is about people that give a damn! Give it for a victim named Morgan Dana Harrington.

I stood on that bridge and thought these people around me care! Care enough to travel. Care enough to place those t-shirts, written words of support, rocks of love are and were given from the heart. Each and every one of them. And those black ribbons pointed out to me, that were from Morgan’s parents and brother! For a moment, they took my breath away.

Yes, I glanced over my shoulder and saw a man, in a minivan, staring and shaking his head. I did not want to tell those I was with because their hearts were aching but filled with love. They were filled with trying to figure this out. We know so little really. But I took his judgemental look, the same way I took it when we placed flowers upon the water, laid notes of love and support, We don’t want that here. Roadside memorials can begin to fade, to be not so brillant, and well, become an eyesore. I know this from experience. Flowers mounted, papers blew, notes faded, teddy bears soggy. We then planted symbols of life in our family. I want Charlottesville, Virginia and The Univerity of Virginia to understand that I am going to continue with my faded symbols until something changes. Then, they can have a symbol of life, a tree or even that boulder of love, we will donate! I even had thought of the bridge becoming a mosaic.

~~We can make that bridge a MOSAIC of shiny mirrors!!~~

“A mosaic of lives fractured but put back together”, I don’t take credit for that analogy but give it to our friend here, Mosaic.

How’s that for a life community!!

But I did want to walk up to that guy and unleash a can of Jersey-whipass and say “Hey, buddy you got a problem?” I do have empathy for him. He probably lives there and drives it daily. He was old and has no doubt moved on with it. So, I didn’t say a thing, just turned away and went about my business placing my hand on the bridge that her hand was on. I thought her “Momma” touched that angel and now here I am, a stranger invading their family, their privacy.

    What must her mother feel?
I know that. My mother felt the same way.
Torn of not wanting it and of needing it.

So I don’t take up too much time. I will ask if anyone wants me to continue with the rocks I will, if anyone wants me to sign legislation I will, if anyone wants to walk for Morgan over that bridge, just name the time and day and you’ve got a date!

Blink Biscuits for you all and for the Harrington Family!

The artful draper would not know the t-shirts provenance nor would he or she have no way of knowing what DNA was on it outside of Morgan’s including what might have become attached to it during the 15th Street staging.

Mom3.0, I was back on the Misty Mountain Campground FB page again today and thinking of you and LocalCvilleGirl.

Local, I have gotten no further than Skyler on Blandemar/Waldemar and I have been staring at aerials and GISweb. A couple of former “Blandemar Ln” properties are no longer mappable, but I think that is where the old spots may be (?). Turns out the now-gone UVA investment dude lives at the end of the cul de sac; house is on market for 2.7 million, but the house is new, not old, and I see no shed (plus it isn’t Chopin … Chopin doesn’t end in a cul de sac according to my maps; I think it just turns back into Blandemar). I wish I had superpowers and could figure out which property and why it made your hair stand on end, ’cause I don’t take that lightly.

Lol. I just heard “fight the fat” in my ear when you said that for y’all wii boxing fans out there.
    B

Finally, HokieHi, as to those IDs, I knew who the one, owner-related girl was and went from her FB photo. Matched the faces in that photo to those in the friend list and some other pics I’d seen, and then to some wall posts, et voila! All was confirmed via the wall posts and photos, and then some (partiers hanging out, indeed). Now, seeing that band-practice photo B posted, I’m all the more interested.

As B says, it is unreal how wide-open some folks are on the internet. I see we have some ladies wising up at last … too late though, girlies. Narcissism gets you nowhere (but hooping may trim the fat).

Sorry in advance if i you comment it before and i missed it.

I would bet anything they let her describe them. Then they investigated and came to a conclusion about it. They just didn’t decide to haul in a bunch of people and have a line up.

That is correct. I have stated previously I do not discount or invalidate what Ms. Parson believes she saw, but I do not believe she saw Morgan.

Besides the fact that all the unknowns are weighing on my mind- I had to ask becuase I think it would help alot to know what kind of a person we are dealing with-

If this person is leaving items scattered everywhere- it speaks to the mind of the killer

If this person took these items and they are still unaccounted for- they could be trophies or presents or—and it would speak to the mind of the killer-

Besides these reasons- I think it would speak just as loudly about any one that aided this person in discarding these things-

So I appreciate that you can’t answer Blink and I just had to state for the record that I was not just asking to be ghoulish or nosey.

B: I understand and appreciate that you never indicated that Willie’s suicide had anything to do with Morgan’s murder, and I likewise appreciate that you too believe they are not connected. It was puzzling early on, however, when you included reference and devoted a section to Willie’s untimely demise in the article ["Retired Greene Sheriff Takes His Own Life - January 28"] that began this thread titled “Morgan Harrington Murder: Coincidences or Clues”.

If it was believed to be a coincidence (rather than a clue), why include it at all in the article?

While we’re in agreement on the lack of connection between Willie Morris’s suicide and Morgan’s murder, I was attempting to address in my post above why I believe that Snead responded as he did to Willie Morris’ residence.

These two individuals–long-standing LE colleagues–had known one another for many years and had worked together. More importantly, LE is nothing if not an extremely tight-knit community. Upon realizing that the panic alarm had been activated at Willie’s home, Snead had every reason to be concerned that Willie was in trouble or something was terribly awry at the residence. [Sadly, Snead was correct.] In this particular instance, I can find no fault with Snead’s concerns and subsequent actions.

I am in complete agreement that rules apply to everyone and are not selective. I would add, however, that LEO are trained–and it is ingrained in their psyches and the very fiber of their beings–to respond immediately if they have any reason to believe that one of their brethren is in trouble. They respond instinctively and without hesitation, as even momentary hesitation could result in potential loss of life for a fellow LEO.

In this specific instance I do not believe that the police need policing, nor that public trust was breached by Snead’s actions in responding to the home of Willie Morris inasmuch as Snead had reason to believe that his former LE colleague and sheriff was in danger. I’m not certain that anyone in the LE community would challenge Snead’s actions in the case of his response to the panic alarm call that would subsequently reveal Willie Morris’ unfortunate suicide.

My above comments are not intended to exonerate Snead; rather, they are intended to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this event in an effort to perhaps better understand the reasoning behind Snead’s actions.

    O

I included Sheriff Morris’s suicide because the piece was about coincidences or clues.

I would have been remiss if I did not point our the variable in this equation.. as is evidenced by the fact that news outlets are STILL today, asking the question..

Also, just because Morris’s suicide may not be linked to Morgan, it would be incumbant upon one to analyze commonalities; I am sure you would agree.

    Lastly, You said:
I am in complete agreement that rules apply to everyone and are not selective. I would add, however, that LEO are trained–and it is ingrained in their psyches and the very fiber of their beings–to respond immediately if they have any reason to believe that one of their brethren is in trouble.

I agree in theory, but I am guessing there were a few more LEO’s at HQ when the call came in.
How does one enforce rules, and break them simultaneously?

I have to agree with Observer on Snead responding to an alarm from Willie Morris (see below). If a call goes out that an officer (retired or not) is in trouble, cops will respond from everywhere! Desk duty, traffic duty, … no matter, everyone is going. It’s a ‘cop thing.’ Double that if you know them.

In fact, the fact that Snead was on desk duty and likely heard the call in headquarters before it went on the air makes it even more understandable that he was the first one there.

And I don’t believe any other officer is going to criticize him for responding to a friend in trouble.

Now some of the other stuff…..not so easy to explain away!

Up until this day, I have read and thought, and read and thought, not bringing forth any real ideas or theories as to who, what or why things have gone down as they have in this investigation. Now, I feel compelled to venture forth a scenario.

Based on some comments from media stories….

    Snipped from comment here http://www.readthehook.com/blog/index.php/2010/4/15/pantera-find-shirt-on-15th-street-was-morgan-harringtons

…”The ***** refused to print the story that the shirt was found in the first place. They didn’t think it was news, for some VERY peculiar reason.. Could it have led to further leads? UVA students don’t read the other papers in town. Probably too late now, huh?

Well, somebody turned out to be right regarding whether it was/is news or not. And the folks at the **** turned out to be 1000% wrong. So now it is them who can look back and wonder if any new leads could have been generated, or people’s memories jogged, by MORGAN’S T-Shirt being found in the heart of UVA student residences and fraternity/sorority rows. They were perfectly happy to have her last confirmed sighting on Ivy hitching a ride West and away from UVA.”

&&&&& Granted, this commenter is very focused on the lack of coverage of Morgan’s story from various news media

    Another snip from here http://www.cavalierdaily.com/2010/03/22/fact-checking/

…”Could someone’s else’s memory have been jarred in the days after Morgan’s disappearance had her interaction with the basketball team or the sighting on the lawn been covered front page top left right away? Did other witnesses see those 4 people on the west range of the lawn that night that would have been reminded and come forward back then? We’ll probably never know now, will we? And does it not strike you as very strange that NONE of these 4 people have EVER been identified since? Or that the resident of the room where they were seen coming out of has lawyered up and refuses to say anything?”

    &&&&

Whether or not we buy into this commenter’s opinion about why certain sightings and accounts were not timely and thoroughly reported and investigated, I am convinced that until we know the identities of the BIB’s, we will not find out what happened to Morgan. Even if not responsible for her death, they surely could offer some clues as to her frame of mind, what they were doing with her in the room on the lawn (if ever confirmed to be truth), where she went after that, etc. It is imperative that the identities of these 4/3 BIB’s be determined. If they are guilty of nothing, and concerned about her fate and clearing their names (in the event they WERE identified), would they not have come forth with something?

The BB players were apparently easy enough to track down, and their stories accepted as truth. Why has there apparently been little effort to identify the BIB’s?

My theory is that the BIB’s were indeed students of the university, or associated with students. The resident on the lawn knows their identities. Norma Parson’s eyewitness account should be taken seriously.

It is interesting to me that (IIRC) the first sighting of the BIB’s indicated there were 4. Ms. Parson’s account stated 3. At some point, did one of them sense that the situation was becoming “hot” and peeled out?

Could 3 or 4 very intelligent students commit such a horrible crime? I think under the right circumstances, yes. Could they have been so arrogant as to later place her shirt in a conspicuous place? Yes. Suppose these highly intelligent, but not so social, students were not into the frat scene, and harbored resentments toward frats in general, or even certain frats that might have slighted them in some way? Might they have planted the shirt in the vicinity of these frat houses around 15th and Grady? I can see it.

Would they know AF, or adjacent properties, well enough to feel comfortable placing a body there? Likely, if they had spent much time cruising the back country roads, or been to parties there, or if one was local, or had local acquaintances. Would Morgan have trusted them to hang out and party with? Probably, thinking they were students, too, they couldn’t be too bad to pass some time with.

No one really wants to believe that students could be capable of such a crime, least of all the institution on whose grounds the events unfolded. No one would have suspected what Elizabeth Haysom and Jens Soering (both UVA students) were capable of, either. But, college life, and the freedom and influences associated with it, can bring together some personalities that are disengaged from the overall healthy experiences that most students enjoy. It isn’t outside the realm of possibility that some students are just “there,” and that they become jaded by college life, absorbed in their own altered realities, and might be prone to act out their aggressions in the most violent ways.

I don’t mean to point fingers, but find it interesting that the on-campus sightings have apparently been downplayed. Maybe they are being explored behind the scenes. But, in the absence of information, or requests for information, from those on the grounds that night, it just seems like a strange diversion to go so far away from where the crime originated to look for potential suspects. The perps were there, on those grounds, for a reason, that night. Why can’t we learn something more about these guys?

RE: If you’re on desk duty that’s what it means. (literally that is it should)
In my neck of the woods if one is on administrative leave while under an IAI, after one turns over their badge, credentials, and issued firearms, one can and will be terminated for accessing say their @work cell phones, computers, or access to the agency’s computer system from an outside source.
Now with that said, every agency and department is different. From various things I’ve read I would imagine ACSO is a typical good ol’ boy networked department. I also agree with you that not only do LEO’s look out for one another, but families too. If I were to hear radio traffic of a familiar address of a coworker being mentioned, I’d bust ass to get there and Vise Versa. Same goes for the professional courtesy given to the LEO’s that sport the blue-lines on their cars as LEO’s won’t issue citations if another is also a LEO or it’s a family member and a name is dropped. (Not saying that makes it right and ethical, just that within most departments that is the normal SOP)
I agree with you, untroubled. I take R.S. being on desk duty not as serious as say being on administrative leave/suspension and responding to something. R.S. still had his gun, badge, and even car I’m speculating. I would imagine when WM’s panic alarm was activated, several LEO listeners on and off duty probably piped up and asked for the radio traffic and location to be repeated and confirmed as they recognized the address or name. As you pointed out, these two were old friends. -And no-one would question RS for responding and being there…(after all, he’s still a #II man)
When I first happened to come across the BOC website, I had only read very little into this case and made a misjudged, hastily, stated first comment ever on this website to the effect of I believed that WM’s death would be linked to MH and that things were going to come out so fast that I believed that MH’s parents would be at peace and this would be a solved case. Certainly so embarrassingly wrong I was then.
One thing for certain though, the first time a LEO lies about something to cover his own or other’s asses, or accepts a gratuity in exchange for special treatment or a turn of the head/close of the eyes, he can never be trusted again, nor should he. It’s those that give all LEO’s black eyes. RS probably did what he really thought was right and okay by getting involved in the documented incidents aforementioned. Though that doesn’t mean it was right and okay to inject himself…JMO.

C-ville, if Belaa Morte is becoming more famous now, why is a band member living at 15th and Grady?
    **********************************************************************

Seriously? I didn’t say they were rich and famous. I said that they can no longer play in a little restaurant that might hold 50 people on their patio, not to mention how loud thay are as a metal/goth band. We have also had a lot of issues here lately about sound ordinances and the maximum sound allowed from outside of a restaurant is now 65db, approximately the level of a normal conversation. When they play it is easily around 100db.

Their crowd is also a rowdy and young crowd, not the type to be welcomed in a small restaurant. The venues they play locally hold between 200-700 people and are indoors, no problems with the sound ordinance.

All of the members of the band live in Charlottesville and they all work normal jobs. It takes a lot to become wealthy enough in a band to start living the high life. For the most part band members are in for way more than they get paid. And touring is very expensive, you are lucky if it covers your expenses while on the road.

Even Dave Matthews played around here (while bar-tending and living with room-mates) for almost 10 years before becoming rich and famous. It’s just the nature of the music business. Some make it and some don’t, but they don’t stop playing just because they aren’t rich.

And, one more thing…the guy you are talking about, who lives on 15th street, he just joined the band last year. They have had a few changes in the line-up in the last few years.

Sorry to go off topic here…just answering a question and got carried away…

I certainly can understand a police officer wanting to run to the aid of a fellow officer.

But as a parent, I also understand the need for rules- I also understand they are there to protect everyone- They were in place to protect RS too.

If you are emotionally involved in a situation you often times do not think clearly and sometimes react in ways you have been trained not to- putting yourself, your friend or the innocent public in harms way.

An alarm was tripped- RS went there not knowing what the call was for- perhaps in the heat of the moment he could have found himself in totally different situation then the self inflicted gun shot death of a friend-

Rules are there to protect- questions arise when rules are disregarded for whatever reason- rumors stem from questions-

Are we sure it was a self inflicted gun shot wound?
Are we sure Colby couldn’t have been talked down?
    Why did RS break jurisdiction?
Are these to incidences tied together?

Although I understand wanting to aid a friend, I also understand why these questions have to be asked.

Rules are made for a reason, and they are 99 x out of 100 there to protect the innocent from getting hurt, hurting themselves or jeopardizing themselves by not following the rules.

Regardless of the reason RS should have followed protocol- he should have followed the rules

My Grandma always said locks are there to keep honest people honest- all others will just find a way to break the lock…..

&&&&& Thanks, and no, I doubt that statement can be proven (by us) as fact. It came from the comments section of the article linked. The person seems to be local, with very definite opinions about the university, the local press, behavior of students, turning a blind eye, etc. From reading his comments on several articles, he seems to be knowledgeable, and I did find that comment particularly interesting.

  29. katesro says:

    IMO-

The incidents are coincidences. With all eyes focused on finding this monster or monsters we are tuned into looking at every detail of every event taking place. Had Morgan not been found that particular day or around that time frame would we still be looking at the fire? Talking about Mr. Morris’s death? I do not believe we would. Instead I believe the killer/s probably do know all of these people, but these events have nothing to do with Morgan’s murder.

ACSO sounds typical with looking out for another. RS sounds like the typical wanna be super trooper. Why no action against him? There just might be plausible explanation without us having knowledge. W

ith looking into each event we get more names to research and how they are related to the next, in addition to the events in their lives. Will this solve the case? We hope so, and there is a chance. We just do not know until we try.

Morning acho…I wish I could drive you around Blandemar and Anchorage Farm so that you could see what I mean. It all looks so different from the ground, you can see how well traveled Red Hill Road is, and exposed that back gate is. When you get into Blandemar you don’t see all of the roads that appear on the map. If someone had access to a few of the houses I think they’d be able to get right to Anchorage without too much trouble, and if it were believed that access was from Blandemar it would really shorten the list of possible POIs. Someone related to a resident, someone who grew up on the old farm, or hunted and wandered there, or someone who now works on any one of the properties. If you go to that gisweb map of 1745 Chopin you can see how Chopin ends in a little lollipop at the top of the map. You can see the faint line of the long gravel driveway that goes up to the old farmhouse and large shed barn, which from the air looks like it has a blue roof. I think the Blandemar Pond is accessible from a few of the houses on that back side and maybe even Red Hill Road, but I couldn’t find the roads leading to it.

Anyway…it may have just been a crazy thought. Just after seeing the whole place I realized that VSP may be asking about the history of Blandemar, not necessarily Anchorage. To a kid, say, or someone who felt he belonged on that land, those two farms melt together and bleed into eachother down on that backside. Someone who had spent time there would know about any old farm roads, gravel, dirt, whatever, that go behind the Blandemar houses and the pond to get to that flat field. We have roads all through our farm that only we know about, and probably the family who owned the farm before us. We have an old cemetery, and a stone fort that the children, who are now in their 80s and 90s, built as a lookout. There are two old homeplaces and the remains of left-over stills along side the creeks leading down to the river. There is so much history to a farm that gets lost when people sell-out and develop. I don’t know…I wish I could describe the feeling of being out there. Someone had to have been comfortable enough with that landscape to have taken Morgan there.

I have no idea who could have done this to Morgan. I think my ADD really kicks in each time we bring in new names and my mind looks for simpler things. As Blink says, though I’m not too sure what she means, we need to just hover at 30,000 ft for a while and see what happens.

  31. alexandra says:

C-ville, thank you for your response. This case is so very frustrating it makes me want to pull my hair out. I just can’t understand who would do this and carry on with their life.

  32. MsL says:

localcvillegirl-What you have described about your family’s farm has brought back so many memories to me of when I was young. My paternal grandfather was already disabled from a heart condition by the time I came along, but he still had the small family farm. It was pure joy for a kid raised in town to explore that land with my grandfather, parents and cousins. We never found any still remnants, but there was an old cemetery on his property and loads of arrowheads and other artifacts. Sadly, we believe the cemetery was a slave cemetery. The tombstones, if there were ever names, were worn smooth by the time we found them. They were only pieces of roughly cut rock or slate stuck in the ground to mark the grave sites. Many had fallen over, we set them back in the ground where we found them. I hope they are still there in place. This land is still in my family, but isn’t available to my children like it was to me. Branches of families tend to grow apart.

You could be right, maybe the focus needs to be on the entire area regarding history and location, not just Anchorage Farm. If I were hovering at 30,000 feet, I think I would be getting a much broader view than here on the ground.

  33. ode says:

Regarding Morgan’s shirt, Blink said it was in good condition when found which seems to indicate it did not show signs of any trauma that dear Morgan may have experienced. It has been discussed that it may have been a trophy at one time or perhaps left in the BG’s car. If a shirt was exposed to the elements for 3 weeks would it still be in good condition? Could LE tell if the shirt was in fact exposed to outside elements for an extended period of time? I do not think you can rule out that the shirt may have been with Morgan after she passed. The BG may have gone back to get it and planted it in 180 degrees in the opposite direction from where Morgan’s body was. He/she/they may believe that this would give credence to Ms. Parsons early morning sighting of someone that looked like Morgan.

  34. MsL says:

I think we are probably all wasting space when writing about Willie Morris’ suicide, but since VSP has chosen to speak, I would like to make a few comments. I’ve stated before, I never knew Mr. Morris, but like others in Charlottesville, I read often of his exploits in Greene County. My father knows and is close friends with many from Greene. Most of what I am writing comes from his mouth to my ears as I was too young to know or care very much about Greene when Sheriff Morris was first elected. Before Willie Morris came to office, Greene was pretty much a joke in our area. It was never the wild, wild west, but respect for the law wasn’t on the mind of a lot of Greene County residents. Their roads were not safe. Locals thought nothing of blocking off sections of roadway to use for drag racing. Drunk driving was rampant. Friend shooting at friend or enemy wasn’t that uncommon. Sheriff Morris was shot and almost killed while working a domestic dispute. From what I understand, it didn’t matter to him whether a lawbreaker was friend, family or unknown, that person was going to end up in Willie’s jail. When he started cleaning up a county that had pretty much lived in it’s own little insulated world for generations, he made enemies. Enemies hold grudges and are often cowards who won’t face someone in a fair fight. IMO, when the panic alarm was sounded at the former Sheriff’s home, the first thought from his colleagues was that he or his family was under some type of threat or attack. I doubt very seriously that Randall Snead even gave a 2nd thought to the fact he was on desk duty. His first instinct as a cop was to get to his former boss, his former colleague and his friend.

If I understand correctly, the desk duty Randall Snead was assigned to was not a form of punishment. In our area, and probably in most police departments, it is sop when an officer is involved in the discharge of a firearm pending investigation.

As for the VSP statement about Willie Morris, rumor had even circulated around Charlottesville that his body was being exhumed for a DNA sample. IMO, the rumors were becoming so ridiculous that VSP felt the need to speak out. Does anyone know, do LE officers have their DNA on file? If not, maybe this is a step that should be considered. After all, they are usually the first on the scene. Being in the database could eliminate a lot of wasted time trying to analyze unidentified DNA.

Unless other verified information comes to light linking him to Morgan Harrington, I think with the VSP statement, Willie Morris should be allowed to rest in peace.

Blandemar: I’m sure someone has brought this up before.. but this recent talk made me think, that she was placed just over the property line of Blandemar, not just inside Anchorage Farm. I know this isn’t what was meant, but location:Anchorage, location: Blandemar, location? Or not….

Observer, you made a good point about LE (April 21, 2010 at 11:14 pm): “that LEO are trained–and it is ingrained in their psyches and the very fiber of their beings–to respond immediately if they have any reason to believe that one of their brethren is in trouble. They respond instinctively and without hesitation, as even momentary hesitation could result in potential loss of life for a fellow LEO.”

Stepping away from the WM and RS (or not)… that could talk to the mentality of a LEO or Rescue personnel involvement. Would one feel the same way about family, or family of a fellow ‘brother in arms’? I know 99% use those instinct for good, I’m not implying LE are loose cannons. But if one were ‘off’… that good instinct could be compromised. Or even confused/conflicted.

Kim, that’s exactly the way I now see it. Morgan was placed just over the property line of Blandemar. Not just inside Anchorage.

We have a few favorite camping spots on our farm, and if I had a body I needed to hide, I sure wouldn’t desecrate one of these spots by placing her there. I’d maybe put her where I could keep track of her remains, or where I’d know if someone found her. Ew, creepy thoughts. But this really could be one of Suz’s loners who did a really bad thing and hid the body where he could keep an eye out. Maybe the t-shirt was a plant after all…a country loner boy is going to put it where he thinks he can place blame on The Students, or someone from the Poor City Neighborhood.

The artful draper would not know the t-shirts provenance nor would he or she have no way of knowing what DNA was on it outside of Morgan’s including what might have become attached to it during the 15th Street staging.

I believe redrock was addressing another post that speculated a passerby put it there.

I second everything MsL wrote is the message referenced above. Well said. I would also add that some of the local Willie Morris lore that I have heard is that he once arrested his own brother. I have no doubt that if he had any information at all about anyone, repeat ANYONE, associated with Morgan’s disappearance and murder, or a cover up that resulted, he would have passed that information along to the proper authorities.

Another thing that has been bugging me. Albemarle County and Greene County are entirely seperate counties. Yes, they are adjacent, but they are completely seperate government entities. The Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Department are completely seperate. I know we have been over this before, but I continue to see references (not by you, Blink) to Willie Morris or Randall Snead being associated with the Albemarle Co. Sheriff’s Office, etc. While it is likely that at least many of the officers from each department are friendly with each other, the actions of one department’s officers should not reflect on the other department, whether good or bad. Albemarle and Greene are not the same county.

okay, lets prune off that branch( member) of the Morris family tree but that still leaves….. CE, WT, etc……

How does one enforce rules, and break them simultaneously?

Well, said. While I understand Observer’s position that a fellow law officer may be in trouble — you can’t break the rules.

Snead was placed on desk duty for a reason, probably because he broke the rules which ended up in the loss of a young man’s life and has potentially put the county in jeopardy of being sued and costing the citizens of Greene County potentially millions of dollars.

This isn’t the Old West and Snead’s not a cowboy. It’s twice, in under 30 days, he has broken policy. If I were a citizen of Greene County, I’d be demanding some answers.

How can Snead uphold the law when he himself so blatantly disregards it ?
