If there truly was a cover-up in Aruba then the Aruban officials could quite possibly have “proof that a death occurred” yet that proof and any evidence may have been buried. There may well be “officials” who are acutely aware of the truth and the real details and facts of Natalie’s case.

I absolutely believe there are. That said, I would not expect them to come forward.
That would require a conscious and integrity. Sorry, I hold them accountable for 2 deaths now.

Kleat, Joran must be familiar with the system in Peru. There is no way he can explain his way out of the video evidence (GREAT POINT about the coffee…..is their surveillance for that??????) He could very well get a lighter sentence for the confession, If I understand it correctly, the system is a little more forgiving if the suspect confesses. It was to his advantage to admit he killed her out of rage as opposed to anger, attempted rape and robbery after she resisted him. He could face a lighter sentence.

If he went to get coffee, why didn’t she bolt? Stephany checks out his laptop and finds out who he really is. Why did she stick around?

If he didn’t get coffee, did she really have a chance to check out his laptop? I doubt it.

Respectfully I wonder, what was she thinking?

  3. Leslee S. says:

Mickey Sherman, on the Joy Baer (HLN) show, said that Sloot knows the laws in Peru. Sloot knows that you can get less time if the crime is committed out of anger.

And I’ll add that Sloot knew to mention that he had smoked marijuana because in Peru, if you claim that you had drugs in your system at the time of the crime, you can get a lighter sentence!!! Unbelievable, huh?

He does have an attorney albiet appointed by Peruian officials and it is probably just until he retains his own. This attorney probably advised him of the best and worse case scenarios. It took JVS three days, in custody, to confess. An attorney may have made JVS aware of what he is up against.

Maybe more than two and countless other lives that have been forever damaged by JVS. I hope other countries, JVS visited, will now backtrack in their investigations of unsolved murders…especially of young women who were last seen at bars, hotels and/or convention centers.

    Good Point.

Have a feeling about Joran’s mother’s role in this protection of her baby son and suspect that we haven’t seen anything yet of what she will have to offer. (after seeing her do the arranging of the NYC interviews, judge hubby sitting quietly at her side on the bed, she’s a force to be reckoned with, I suspect).

  8. Kleat says:

Joran ‘is not arrogant at all’, ‘he is very strong because he’s a fantastic sporter’, ‘he cries’, ‘I want people to know he has a normal life going on, why would he do anything to a girl he just met’, unfairly targetted…. etc etc…

  9. Leslee S. says:

Someone at Caylee Daily posted that he wondered if Sloot’s laptop was in the Dutch language operating system. Her’s would be Spanish. Sloot & Stephany conversed in English. So Stephany would not even be able to read anything on a Dutch operating system! We know Juran when picked up, had his laptop with him. Did they even find Stephany’s fingerprints on the keyboard?

That monster is lying about what happened & he will more than likely change this story.

Sloot was planning on a rape & stealing her money. Didn’t her father say she had lots of money on her & it was gone?

  10. Kleat says:

    http://scaredmonkeys.com/category/joran-van-der-sloot/

Klassend makes some interesting observations, Dutch language on Joran’s computer, so how did Stephany invade privacy if she could not read Dutch. (maybe she saw Goggled photos and recognized Natalie? Maybe… more likely not).

Why get coffee? Because it’s nice to have a cup to wake up with– that would fit with Klassend’s idea of Stephany having gone to sleep (tired or just the drugs?) and was killed in her sleep vs causing Joran to attack her for his stated confession reasons, and the coffee as an alibi.

I’d add one more point that fits with Klassends observations– makes complete sense that if Stephany were sleeping, she would be in a t-shirt but without the jeans. Joran probably figures attacking a woman in her sleep isn’t quite as sympathetic to himself as if she had wronged him in more than one way.

Still, doesn’t explain why she went to the room, maybe it was simply the drugs.

He has traveled far and wide and may have left a lot of “missing” girls in his wake.

The 22-year-old Joran van der Sloot is suspected of involvement in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in 2005.
UPDATE LIMA – The South American media following the reports about Joran van der Sloot at a rapid pace. In Colombia, the police now launched an investigation into the disappearance of two girls from the capital Bogota. Writes that the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio. The disappearance coincided with the stay of Joran van der Sloot in Bogota between 6 and May 14

HOPEFULLY NOT, but with his character and personality type that was further enhanced by the DAMN “Diplomatic Immunity” he wore so smugly, he may have done a lot of damage to the unsuspecting. That DI has given so many sons of diplomats a free pass it makes me literally ill. Does Diplomatic Immunity die with it’s sponsor’s death? Heaven help us, I hope so……

Someone asked upthread, why JVDS picked up a room key at the desk. European custom is to retain key while you in your room or on hotel grounds and in the key boxes while you leave premises. However, this was not a “Hotel” that he was staying at in Peru, but a “Hostel”, more along the lines of staying at the “Y”………Certainly no star ratings in these accomodations….

    Have a Sparkling day !

  13. Sue says:

If Stephany had any misgivings about going into Joran’s room, then why didn’t she leave when Joran went to get coffee? She stayed in the room. If she was very uncomfortable about anything, then she would have accompanied Joran out of the room and went her separate way. She could have said she had an appt. and then “split” without hesitation. But we all know she stayed – perhaps against her will – but she stayed. The computer will tell a good story. How did she get into his private computer? Didn’t Joran have a password? He was a world traveler. Certainly he left his computer behind on many an occasion in his hotel rooms etc. He would have had a password – no doubt……His story is not adding up in my opinion.

  14. Theresa says:

There is a part of Joran’s confession that really sticks out and I haven’t heard anyone discuss. He said that Stephany wanted to leave and he wouldn’t let her THAN she slapped her. How did he prevent her from leaving without some kind of physical contact. To me it puts in question that he was only defending himself, not that I believed he was.

  15. TR says:

  16. Boz says:

She loaned him a couple of hundred dollars at the tables. He said to follow him to his room where he could pay her back. All the time knowing he was going to rob and kill her. When she got in the room and he said he didn’t have any money, she grabbed his computer and said she’d just keep it until he paid up. She tried to leave and that was that.

It’s either that or he tried to have sex with her and she laughed at him and told him she was a lesbian. He went nuts.

Whatever, he’s done now. Won’t live to the end of this year.

Ya know Boz, I agree with you. I think he has a bounty, big time. If he is smart, he will try to give up Natalee via the US case before it gets that far.

  17. Word Girl says:

    Sue,
For the first time I am questioning Joran’s story about Stephany being on his computer. And why should we believe word one of anything the sociopath/psychopath says, anyway?! Thank you for hitting my reset button.

However, if he and Stephany had been on his computer, anyway, and he left her surfing the poker sites, she may have been able to look up anything, in any language she wanted. A Dutch operating system still has google and a search box. The only problem with some foreign computers is the keyboard.

Although I haven’t seen video of it, I understood that JVS left the room for coffee, returning at 8:15am.
Mom 3.0–most hotels don’t have room service. Meals are available in a dining room or you go out and bring something back. Hostels, if they have food available, usually serve it cafeteria/self-serve style. I hope you get to try it sometime.

Kleat, thanks for that Dutch video compilation. They did a nice job. I agree that Anita was responsible for the fortress around her son. Paulus looks and sounds meek. Her voice changed when he called Joran–”did you speak to (St.) Joran/was that Joran?” Too bad Paulus got voicemail as we may have heard more of her maternal blindness.

Leslee S.–yes, we can only speculate based on our human experience. Often ideas float about and begin to coalesce as we imagine scenarios. Many of us here are of common mind. We read a lot, we ponder, we try to link behavior to our own understanding of how people respond. When behavior or facts or information doesn’t jive, it goes back into the hopper, incubator or, in my case, the ever-simmering back burner.

  18. TR says:

  19. Kriddo says:

I read in a couple of Dutch papers that Van der Sloot claims, in his confession to the police, that Stephany responded to a message VDS got on his Facebook. Something about Holloway. He went out for coffee, she saw the message coming in and when he came back they got in a fight.

He claims he acted out of self defence!

  20. Sue says:

From what I’ve heard this morning on the news, Joran’s mother Anita is in Peru looking to hire a defense atty. for her bad boy. Now the shoe will be on the other foot. She will learn what it’s like to have to deal with foreign laws etc. She will be a “nobody” in Peru, the same way Beth, Jug and Dave were treated in Aruba 5 yrs. ago. Oh I hope he doesn’t get a break and what I mean by that is – I hope he has to stay in Peru to face the charges and I hope he’s charged to the fullest extent of the law. Unlawful Imprisonment sounds like it should be added to the list.

  21. Sue says:

I might add that perhaps he has a new, hired atty. now and maybe that is the reason he hasn’t gone to the hotel to “re-enact” the crime scene. Perhaps “mama dukes” got him a big ol’ expensive lawyer who put the kabosh on any more confessions. I do think they have evidence however that will put him away for the long haul.

  22. Boz says:

Right Kriddo, self defense of his little wee wee she was probably laughing at. What a punk!

  23. Kim says:

Agreed Sue-BUT he will not live for the long haul, no way in hell he is going to live long regardless. Frankly I am not sure it even matters if he gets 5 years (just throwing a number out) because Papa isn’t playing with this situation and Mama VDS knows it and wants her boy out! Not out of jail persay-but out of Peru. he is a walking deadman realistically…..

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks WordGirl and thank you to all of you guys for posting updates.

I don’t know if we will ever hear the real truth of what went down in the room- JV is a practiced liar, and he will tell whatever story he wants, truth be damned.

I am happy that he has confessed and he will be punished, regardless of his “truth”.

  25. AnotherVoiceHeard says:

Joran is an evil, narcissistic sociopath. He preys on women that he needs either for sex, or, in this case, for their money. He gets them to trust him, allows them just enough time to let their guard down, and then “WHAM” he has his opportunity to commit yet another heinous act of violence. After giving this some thought, my guess is that after spending time at the poker tournament with Stephany and her friends, Joran, seeing that Stephany was winning a significant amount of money, may have proposed the idea for her to drop off her friends, come back to the casino to play another round, then when the casino closed, she could just stay at his hotel room rather than drive home alone at that early morning hour. (What a nice guy!!!) He planned to rob her of her money the first chance he got. Only problem was that she left her pocketbook in the car and he needed an excuse to go out of the room to get it. Not sure if he may have killed her BEFORE he left the room the first time. The video showing him with the backpack suggests that he may have planned to leave the hotel and not come back. Was this when he went out to get her car, move it to an undesirable location, and grab the first taxi he could find? Why wasn’t there video showing him arriving back with coffee and bread or video showing him leaving a second time? I would also like to know if her fingerprints are anywhere on his laptop. My guess is NO. Joran just wants even a tiny bit of justification for his rage and by saying that she invaded his privacy, that’s enough for him. My hope is that the Peruvian authorities will see what an evil person they have in their midst and will do the right thing.

  26. Slowroller says:

…wow, just catching up…i like the robbery angle, and i can just see it now…

S-”you’re going to rob me? dont you know who i am??”
    VDS-”yeah i do, and yeah i am…??”
S-”my dad wont play nice with you, he has people on payroll who take care of me, you won’t make it out of Peru alive”
VDS-”don’t you read the news?? if you think i’m worried, then you obviously don’t know who I AM??”

sidenote: didnt one of the housemates whose rental burned down in north garden visit Peru…huh, small world…where was JVDS in 10/09??

  27. Lee says:

I think Stephany was already dead before the whole coffee thing and his computer story was just BS. Can’t you just see Joran enjoying his bread and TWO cups of coffee by himself while the body of Stephany laid there on the floor?

When she got in the room and he said he didn’t have any money, she grabbed his computer and said she’d just keep it until he paid up. She tried to leave and that was that.”

This sounds like the most plausible reason Why Stephany followed him into his hostle/hotel room. The manner in which she walks behind him is not even remotely buddy or friend-like…it is actually quite unengaged. I would be interested to see the mood and quality of their interactions at the poker table…from start to finish… I would like to see the moment that it is decided that the two will leave together. I wonder if their is video footage of the two getting into her Jeep (Jeep, right?)…Who drove?

I’m thinking that if she left her money and belongings in the car that JVS needed to get her to come inside in order to take possession of her car keys. Unless, of course, she put the winnings on her person somewhere…which might explain why her pants were removed. At least in Stephany’s case, it seems this may all come down to money.

I’m thinking that the business of going out for the coffees, later dumping her car in a seedy neighborhood, then confessing by saying that she “invaded his privacy” and hit or slapped him is all a boatload of horsesh!t. I believe, the only reason he brought up the Natalie line is for bargaining power…remember he grew up playing poker. Ever move he makes seems to be calculated…except that JVS is his own worse enemy because he SNAPS in rages and kills people. All while leaving behind tons of evidence.

  29. katts says:

Seems to me it’s a legal and media dog & pony show. Although a fascinating story with international attorneys to be enriched, unknown murder specifics, forced confessions, a speculated sentencing length combined with frightening prison conditions, hope in finding Natlie and an extortion sting gone awry. All exciting components, but inconsequential as to Joran’s end. He will never leave Peru alive. AN absolute Shocker if he does.

The only redemption being the finding of NATLIE information on his computer. May she be found with any Arubian accomplices identified.

yes Boz I think you have it , I thought this all along , I also think Stephanie was already dead when he went for coffee. Anita VDS can jig till the cows come home , she can spend money like water , he is not leaving Peru , Stephanie Florese’s Father was a famous raceing driver in Peru and very popular with the public , so most likely his children were known too,he was also a candidate for president , so yes Stephanie was a well loved daughter and sister of a wealthy prominent family , they will have justice that is for sure .I have read that a confession only counts towards reducing you sentence in Peru if you are sincere and it is before the body is found , so a sincere confession and help the police to solve the crime you will get a somewhat reduced sentence , VDS running away dying his hair and spinning his yarn does not make it . I still think even a reduced sentence in one of those jails is a hell of a long time .

I have no way of knowing for certain, but I agree with you, Boz, I think that he was looking to either connive or steal the money from Stephany. I don’t necessarily believe that he had murder planned, I just feel he is the type that will not be denied. To do so to him, is like an insult or injury, so then he is justified (in his own mind) for whatever acts he commits. He probably even considers that by “allowing” Stephany into his room, for a break from gambling, he was doing her a big favor, and that he was the one put upon. How dare she not give him the money he needed? I am also speculating that Stephany might have shared the fact that she was a lesbian with him. Adding to that, I think that with his glib charm, Joran probably responded as though he was very tolerant and accepting of that, and that may be why she felt safe to go back to his room. She probably bought into his nice guy routine, and thought that there was no risk of rape, never mind murder. I don’t know what the cultural climate is for lesbians in Peru, maybe there isn’t a lot of tolerance, maybe Joran came across as more evolved and she felt she had a new buddy. If she had been “out” for some time, and she was quite young, who knows how much experience she had one on one with men to begin with? I wanted to throw this out there, because I read on other sites how stupid Stephany was, and I don’t know that this is fair. She was likely just naive. Clearly, she hadn’t heard of his past, so although her decision was unwise, I don’t agree with the victim blaming.

I have also read a couple of posts where people are writing that they believe that Joran was set up or framed. To me, that makes absolutely no sense. The government may attempt to assassinate terrorists or leaders of terrorists, but it is an insane jump to conclude that the FBI would be willing to go as far as killing an innocent third party to make a case against Joran, and in a foreign country nonetheless. You have a history of pathological lying, impulsivity, trigger hair anger, gambling, running out of money (never working for that money), a missing girl, and yet conspiracy theorists love to jump to the least likely scenario. (I could put a footnote here to refer to the Casey Anthony Case).

If not the FBI, then who in Peru would have wanted her killed? This person would have had to have had access to all the video, in real time surveillance, in order to time the crime perfectly; waiting until Joran leaves, killing Stephany in the interim, and then editing out the tape where the real perp enters and leaves the room. That also is highly implausible. Then, I guess you could attempt to say this happened after he left, but it would make no sense for Joran to flee in the manner that he did, unless he saw the body. He still had enough money on him to pay the brothers to take him across the border to Chile. If he wasn’t aware of the dead girl, that means that he still had plenty of cash to pay for the cheap hostel that he was staying in, with more time to try to get cash from someone else to continue gambling. If he wasn’t trying to get away unnoticed, why didn’t he cancel the plans with that other gambler to go to dinner that night? Why dye his hair?

As to the computer, I don’t buy any of that nonsense at all. Joran had no problem with discussing his past (even for money), and so the idea of her “snooping” doesn’t ring true for me.

  33. Sue says:

Pat Brown – criminal profiler – states that JVS is a serial rapist/sexual predator with rage tendencies. She states that he does not fit the profile of a serial killer. On her web-site she also states that people involved in the truth in the Natalee Holloway case in Aruba are gathering in Peru at this time to see to it that if JVS receives a diminished sentence for whatever reason in the murder of Stephany Flores, that this sentence should include the truthful whereabouts of Natalee Holloway’s remains. Pat Brown goes on to explain that people who engaged in the cover-up of NH’s murder should be quaking in their shoes right now. AOL/PatBrown criminal profiler Joran Van der Sloot. (I tried to cut and paste, but to no avail.)

How is this going to remotely help his client?
It was my understanding that the act of confessing, taking responsibility for the crime, was a mitigating factor for sentencing in Peru? To claim self defense, when clearly without a weapon Flores could not have caused serious harm, or posed a serious threat, it seems to jeopardize any validity that van der Sloot took responsibility or felt any remorse. Did Altez just cook his client’s goose?

Van der Sloot attorney says he will try to strike confession
    http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/06/10/peru.murder.case.attorney/
Lima, Peru (CNN) — The attorney for Peru murder suspect Joran van der Sloot said he’s going to ask the judge in charge of the case to strike down his client’s confession because he was not being properly represented at the time he was interrogated, lawyer Maximo Altez told CNN affiliate Panamericana TV in an interview that aired Thursday…….
Altez said Flores attacked van der Sloot first, after he confronted her for going through his computer. Police said Flores was badly beaten and suffered a broken neck.

  36. westsidehudson says:

Also, van der Sloot’s attorney has offered a confession of sorts, on his own. He places Joran in the room “defending” himself, not “innocent” or not in the room as Joran had stated to his mother.

I think we are underestimating the Peruvian officials and police. Just b/c JVS confessed doesn’t mean it sheds light on the truth. The confession has to be at the very least truthful, containing details that support the evidence and crime scene. JVS put a spin on his confession that could favour him a lighter sentence. His sleezy, slimy lies are proceding now.

There may be grains of truth to his confession, but he is hiding details that could implicate him for robbery and attempted rape, imo.

His confession is a complete wash and I think that could be supported by his lawyer wanting to strike his confession (CNN). His lawyer KNOWS JVS was premature and hasty with his confession.

    We shall see.

  40. Ragdoll says:

Katie, I had mentioned in an earlier post that her demeanor and how she carried herself while trailing JVS to his room did not look like a girl who was hooking up. In fact, she looks apprehensive and nervous. Her head long low suggests uncertainty and perhaps…..not wanting to be there at all. JVS owing her money could get her to his room. It certainly wasn’t based on chemistry between the 2. As far as Stephany was concerned, she may have thought she would be in and out….and on her way back home.

The robbery is the most plausible explanation so far. I believe robbery and attempted rate are motives for the killing. He snapped. He didn’t get his money, learned Stephany was a lesbian (her own and resisted his forced advantaged. He HATES women…and Stephany being a lesbian could easily fire his contempt for her and women.

I strongly believe she fought him….and hard! There’s more evidence and hard facts solidfying his role in her murder. We aren’t aware of them….but like Kleat brought out, where is the survellience for his coffee run? Did that even take place?

    Tik Tok…….

Lima, Peru (CNN) — Peru murder suspect Joran van der Sloot, a longtime suspect in the disappearance of an American teen in Aruba, was transferred from a police facility to the national attorney general’s office Thursday morning, according to images broadcast by CNN affiliate America TV.

It was not immediately known why he was transferred.

Earlier Thursday, van der Sloot’s attorney said he planned to ask the judge in the case to strike down his client’s confession, because van der Sloot was not being properly represented when he was interrogated, lawyer Maximo Altez told CNN affiliate Panamericana TV.

I guess he thinks he will be acquitted, or he thinks he can manipulate Peru in to believing his innocence. Can’t wait to see the forensic evidence.

TR & Blink, Re Kyron, I don’t get a feeling that the step mother is hiding anything either. But I do wish someone would search that damn school. Maintenance personel would be easiest person to get a child alone and conceal him. Grrr. I want to scream to these people to close the school and search every crevice.

Let me say this, God willing, I will be able to write on this late night.
However, You are on my page as usual.

This was not a stranger abduction. This was not someone unfamiliar to the school, and I believe that child was off school grounds at the end of a shift. Sadly, they need to be checking garbage pick ups.

    RubyRose,
And if they convict him without a confession he’ll mostly likely get a longer sentence… It looks like they should have plenty of evidence against him too…

Is there such a thing as truth serum? If so, of course the US would not use it, but what about Peru? Joran is such a sick individual that I do not think he will ever give Natalie’s parents peace. I wish there was something that someone could make him do – hypnosis, etc.. to make him finally tell the truth.

Blink–I know you’re doing an article on Kyron. Today should net the largest of group of searchers so far.
Sheriff departments from all over Oregon arrived last night and stayed out at a closed prison facility. About 125 pro searchers are out today.

As for an early shift, the custodian would have opened the school early for the science fair, and likely stayed until at least 3:30pm (on a 7am-3:30pm shift). I don’t know if Skyline has a second shift since they are so small (fewer than 300, K-8).

They do have a before-school daycare, beginning at 7 a.m. I also noted a breakfast menu.

According to the bell schedule, the A.M. busses arrive at 8:35a.m. School starts at 8:45 a.m.

Who would be leaving that school at 8:35am?

Talk about hinky!! Some of the HLN’s reporters have it all wrong!! The newly released video of Stephany ‘meeting’ Joran at the table for the first time as HLN and this CBS YouTube says??? Uh uh, not an introductory or ‘first meeting’ and handshake, not what is going on. (IMHO… but see if you agree)

Here’s a CBS report with the video, and CBS has obviously cut and spliced– we need to see the whole stream sets.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLLrbyapVLg

0:37 seconds, Stephany walks into view and begins to approach the empty seats at Joran’s table.

Watch carefully as Stephany ‘shakes Joran’s hand’– do you really think that’s a handshake?? She’s being very casual yes, but does she pass something from her right hand to Joran? And does Joran put that (a chip maybe?) down on the table under his palm? Is Stephany spotting a bet for Joran, or is he placing a bet for her?

This may be a very ‘weak’ handshake. Stephany seems to be looking over to the other table when she arrives, maybe looking at the other empty seat, which becomes occupied by a young man with a hoodie over his head.

The cut video report says Stephany leaves, then comes back and they leave together. Looks like both Joran and Stephany were up from the table, then Joran talks to a man, probably Stephany keeps walking, then maybe doesn’t ‘leave’ at all, but turns and comes back to Joran as she’s got ahead of him. (hard to tell from the cut videos what the time sequence is.

If this isn’t a first meeting and handshake, then the two might be meeting up in a very casual way at the table for some other reason. What, if anything did she hand to Joran, and why would a confident guy like that be fumbling with his chips, doesn’t seem like the shakey, nervous type when he meets a young woman.

Strange– why was she looking over her shoulder before sitting down, and why was she so casual about meeting up with Joran? So something wasn’t obvious?
