David Hartley Gunned Down On Jet Ski In Mexico : Tiffany Young-Hartley Facing Scrutiny

Posted by BOC Staff | Bizarre Crime,Blink,David Hartley,Falcon Lake,Mexican Territory,Murdered,Tiffany Young-Hartley | Tuesday 5 October 2010 10:34 pm

According to his wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, who called 911, David Hartley, 30, was gunned down by Mexican pirates while the couple ventured across the Falcon Resovior lakes US border to take pictures of the “Mexican Atlantis” or Old Guerreo.

HartleyJetSkiClose

Hartley says her husband was shot in the head and as a result “flew” off his jet ski while the couple was returning from the landmark on the Mexican side of the lake, after taking pictures. She goes on to say she became aware of 3 different boats chasing down the couple only after she saw bullets hitting the water next to her. As she turned around to see where they were coming from, she claims she witnessed her husbands murder.

David was driving a new Sea Doo RXT ski that can climb from 0–30MPH in 1.7 seconds and is capable of top-end speeds of over 60 MPH.  Blinkoncrime.com has not been able to confirm which model Ms. Hartley was driving. The couple had been on at least one earlier jet ski jaunt while still in Mexico, but was cut short due to a mishap with David’s craft on June 20th.

HartleyMovingJune2010

According to his wife, David was face-down in the water, wearing a life vest, after he was shot.

Despite the horror of what she had just witnessed and astonishingly avoiding injury to her or her watercraft, she circled back around, jumped off her jet ski, and turned her 250 lb. husband upright to observe the gunshot wound to his forehead. You read that correctly, according to Tiffany Hartley, while being chased from behind, David was shot from the front. Hartley maintains this is when she attempted to load him onto her jet ski, and also when two of the three boats were now positioned in front of her.

TiffanyFB

One of the alleged pirate boats from the front approached her within 10 ft. While she stared down the barrell of his gun, she was holding onto her husband with one hand, her ski with the other asking not to be shot. Apparently through some sort of Mexican telepathy or nautical sign language, the men who just ambushed the couple and murdered her husband in cold blood, made a decision to let her go and retreated IN FRONT OF HER.

Hartley claims she cannot identify any of the men, that they never said a word to her nor could she hear anything they may have said to each other, but believes the motive for the attack to be robbery or to kidnap her. It is not clear how Tiffany arrived at this conclusion as they never made an attempt to stop them or ask them for their money, she was off her $13,000 Sea doo they could have easily taken, and they let her go.

It was at this time that Hartley finally did hear something. She says she heard the voice of God tell her to leave David, save herself and get to safety. However, his instruction must have been non-specific because she proceeded to mount her ski in deep water, start it back up, and drive directly toward and then past the very band of gun weilding murderous cartel who minutes ago gunned down her highschool sweetheart and spouse of 8 years. (Editors note: I cannot imagine the nerve it takes to again have your back to the same crew who, unprovoked, sprayed the lake with bullets behind you while you were fleeing for your life).

While Tiffany admits the couple was aware of recent pirate activity in the area they learned about while David researched the location, she claims they had not heard of anymore incidents on Falcon Lake, which borders both Texas and Mexico, “in a while.”

The Hartley’s, who had recently been on a few tropical vacations, were in the process of relocating to Colorado next week from Reynosa, Mexico and McAllen Texas, where they had lived for only a few months, following David’s transfer request to Calfrac well services.

According to recent Facebook postings, although the couple could not agree on furniture tastes, they recently purchased a house full of it just after a luxury cruise and visit to a seminar for those experiencing financial difficulty.

I would love to be able to do no analysis and regergetate this story as reported by main stream media whereby not one reporter asks the obvious question:

After several known incidents of piracy in that location over the last months, why would the “pirates” suddenly go on a murderous rampage in lieu of attempting to rob a couple on jet skis that could outrun them on sight?

Not gonna happen. I have heard umpteen versions of Ms. Hartley’s version of events leading to the random execution of her husband.

None pass the smell test. However, just today, Zapata County Sheriff “Sigi” Gonzalez, Jr says his investigation, now aided by a witness who is a long standing member of the Zapata community, exonerates Mrs. Hartley of any wrongdoing.

Gonzalez completely rules out foul play on the part of Mrs. Hartley.

“A local witness saw Tiffany Hartley escaping on her jet-ski to the Texas side of the lake,” he said. “She came in at high speed and was being pursued by armed men in a Mexican fishing boat that that the witness clearly observed.”

Gonzalez said the witness was a long-standing member of the Zapata community who was well known to him and regarded as highly credible.

“The testimony of this witness dispels any idea Mrs. Hartley was involved in any wrongdoing regarding the murder of her husband,” he said firmly. “She called in a 911 phone call to our office at around 2:20 p.m. on the day of the incident, immediately after she got to shore, and her statements to my office confirm what the local witness observed.”

Unfortunately, the witness account does not match Tiffany Hartley’s own version of events. At no time has she ever said that she was again chased by the “pirates”, in fact, she claims she left them behind after driving “through” them.

Hartley references recent pirate activity, which is almost verbatim what she says happened to her and David, with the exception of the actual piracy:

On April 30, five people in two different boats were fishing on Falcon Lake and went to the Old Guerrero area, where they were taking photos of the old church. While they were there, a boat with four heavily tattooed men approached the two boats quickly. The men identified themselves as “Federales,” but they were not wearing uniforms. The men boarded the boats, demanded cash and asked “where are the drugs?” The fishermen told the men that they had no drugs and were just fishing and taking photos. They ended up giving the men $200 cash and left the area. The pirates followed the two boats, but the U.S. boats were able to outrun them and the men stopped following once the two boats entered U.S. waters.

In every recorded incident since April, the heavily tattoed pirates posing as “Federales” without uniforms, came upon anchored fishing boats, boarded them, robbed the fisherman at gunpoint of any personal cash, searched for drugs left without any violence. In the Hartley family interview on the Today show, Tiffany states that after David was hit, she circled around, jumped off her jetski, swam over to her husband and because he was “face down in the water” she had to turn him over where she discovered he was shot in the head.

It would seem I am not alone in my quagmire.  Mexican Investigators, who hold jurisdiction have already begun to question Ms. Hartley’s story.

Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney for the Miguel Aleman Province adjoining Falcon Lake on the Mexican side, has questioned whether Tiffany Hartley was involved in foul play.

Early this morning, Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez announced the Mexican Authorities will be searching the area where David Hartley was murdered, and have committed to “not leaving” until they find him. Tiffany Hartley, accompanied by her parents, but without David’s, filed a missing person report at the Mexican Consulate last night as a matter of procedure to “get the ball rolling”.

This story is worse than a B movie script. The sheriff needs to get busy and dig back in this couples past. If the story is anywhere close to what she reports, they would have shot her or taken her prisoner.

I was on the floor after watching the Greta appearance, apparently, so was Greta on commercial.

An american woman with 30K of equipment (sea doos) for thugs that were getting a few bucks from fisherman and not shooting anyone? Nobody was going to jump on that ski (s) and ride it back?

No way. My heart breaks for this family.

No way. I live down here – and we have our border/immigration issues no doubt – but unfortunately hispanics have become the new version of Susan Smith’s claim of an African American dude. SODDI should be replaced with SOHDDI or SOBDDI. Even the ultra-conservative folks down here don’t believe her as badly as they want to. Will be interesting to see who has egg on their faces for not doing all of the forensic tests one would normally have done if they reported their spouse was killed and they were the only witness to it.

Of course, if it turns out to be true I guess I’m the one with egg all over my face. That’s ok – I’ll admit it.

    Oye vey.

I can’t tell you the muzzle I wore when writing this. I will be the first one to apologize if I am wrong, but there is no possible way this woman’s story is correct. I am not suggesting she killed her husband, it could be five different possibilities.

    Hi Blink,

Although this story doesn’t seem to make sense, and Tiffany doesn’t seem to be as traumatized as one would probably be after having gone through such an experience….I just wanted to say that a gunshot to the back of the head would IMO force David to fly forward off of his jetski, and land face down in the water.

It is possible, if the story she is telling is true, that she did not notice the wound to the back of his head, but when she turned him over, the exit wound was visible on his forhead. So, I don’t believe she is saying he was shot from the front…just that that is when she realized he had been shot in the head.

I’m not saying I’m buying her story. At this point, I really don’t know what to believe. I’m just trying to point out the way I have interpreted the events that she described regarding David being shot. The way she described this actually made sense to me. However, the rest of the story, as you have pointed out, does not seem probable.

I have considered that, except to say that in all of the previous “pirate incidents” the witness claim they were using ak-47′s, or machine guns, the like-

Those bullets wound profile produces damage, referred to in forensics as tissue disruption following it’s permanent crush cavity, 30x the diameter of the bullet. It is not impossible, but at the range we are talking, with no other hits that we know of, it is unlikely if they were close enough to get a “through and through”.

    Possible yes.

Does not make sense- can’t say anything other than that- why would the pirates- who get that name because they rape and plunder- along with steal their bootie- just take off with nothing?

Does not make sense- sure- beautiful blonde lady witness- go about your business- you are free to go- we too heard the voice of God- and he told us you would not remember our faces and that you would leave us be- and leave your husband alone- good thing we only shot your husband and not you- see it works out for everyone, except of course David -

My prayers for the family and friends.

Hey everyone! Hope y’all are enjoying a beautiful fall <3

The first time I heard this story, I knew something wasn't right. I'm no psychic. It was the same feeling I had when the Susan Smith story broke out. Just how common are Mexican pirates? This was the first story I've ever heard it mentioned. And when it happens at sea and you're the only survivor….

I'm just saying. Thank you for writing this up Blink. It's been disturbing me a great deal.

  8. nancy1024lyl says:

Something definitely stinks to high heaven here! Blink I have lived over forty years in that area until a recent job transfer, and I can tell you a few stories. But the only thing that doesn’t jive about this story is the “pirates” would come out shooting from the start at this couple. For as long as I have lived around the Mexican border the “pirates” AND the federales have just wanted what we call “a mordida” which is translated into a payoff to let you go on with your daily life. (Yes I’m talking the mexican border side crossing the bridge to ask what is your business in mexico) Give them some money and they leave you alone. I just don’t see these “gun men” taking such a risk of doing such a shoot out without first securing their pockets and making it worth their while. If these people were going to shoot they most definitely would shoot up in the air to get your attention and then go in for the goods. I can’t see them stealing some jetskis either. Let’s just say they aren’t that valuable to these kind of people. It’s all about the money honey!!!! The fact that this tragedy went down without a transaction is stunning to say the least. This is the “pirates” foundation of operation if you will especially in Mexico. I hope to God that this girl is not involved with her husband’s murder. The fact that a gun down could be “arranged” takes less money than people think and without a trace. Gunmen in Mexico are a dime a dozen and a “set up” is their fortay. I feel for his family and hopefully receive some kind of resolution for this tragic loss. My prayers are with them. I hope I’m wrong.

I just want the Texas Rangers to give Tiffany a lie detector test before anything else gets blown out of proportion about this case. It’s truly bizare, now Governor Perry has given Mexico a 48 hour ultimatum to return his body…or else WHAT?!?

Border Problems as it relates to Americans safety are in crisis, I agree. I am firm about my position on illegals, and the mega violence going on in Mexico. On a personal level, I am also on record as a victims advocate.

That said, we have officials making threats without so much as a piece of corroborating evidence that there has even been a crime, let alone that matches this girls story. I have been closely monitoring feedback on this case for 2 days, reasonable people are asking for reasonable reassurances.

    And, getting none.

WTH does “we asked the right questions” mean?

Really? Well I have a few then, maybe someone can straighten me out?

    1. What from Ms. Hartley’s person was taken into evidence and by what agency? Her vest, jet ski, clothes? Presumably if she tried to flip a 250lb man bleeding from a gaping headwound onto a sea doo, there would be blood evidence on her/her clothes/jetski?

    2. Was she subject to a polygraph? Offered one, refused?

    3. Was she processed for GSR/Chem/Trace?

    4. Was her jetski processed by CSI?

    5. Was her clothing retrieved on-scene while being interviewed/ processed ?

This would be my very short list which would go a long way in understanding the profile here.

Before anyone gives me the wrath about these questions- this is STANDARD PROTOCOL for the content of her statement of events, in ANY criminal investigation. It has as much to do with the successful exclusion and subsequent prosecution if appropriate as it does for a flat out mp investigation.

For instance, I have yet to hear her say he was dead at the scene. How do we know?

I wasn’t thinking machine guns. That changes things a little :)

I knew there was a reason for the insertion of “wearing a life vest” in your piece — just didn’t figure it out. Now I understand.

I also heard part of the 911 call, and it was not very convincing to me at all.

Susebear has me wondering now……maybe his body is not even there at all — maybe he wasn’t there at all???? Maybe she killed him someplace else, and then just staged all of this? I don’t know — just thinking… I guess until they actually find his body, we won’t really know.

I believe, as Susebear stated, that she would have blood on her somewhere, if this really happened, and she was trying to lift him. Head wounds bleed A LOT.

  21. Annals says:

Riding a SeeDo is a VERY LOUD experience. Motor, water spraying and most of all the air speeding past the ears. I question whether someone coursing along on one can hear gunshots; automatic weapon or not.

Seeing the bullets spraying in the water around her SeaDO? Could one really see that in the spray plume of water produced by this craft?

I admit, I could have written this piece with a laundry list of things that defied logic, or that I could disprove with little effort. I am trying very diligently to keep as even as possible to let this play out.

The bullets hitting the water as she is driving her jet ski is laughable. This was a lake. No tide people, none.

Lakes have wakes as it relates to weather conditions and crafts on it’s surface.

I could certainly bore everyone to tears with ballistics and trajectory information that will show this story is impossible.

Perhaps I could share my concern about her awkward transposition of the words boat and ski. Did she get in and out of a boat at the scene?

I do not know what happened to who on that lake. I do know it did not happen this way.

That, I can state as fact.

My best friend’s husband has gone bass fishing on Falcon Lake for as long as I can remember, and has always been VERY careful to stay on the U.S. side. A few months ago he stopped fishing there altogether due to reports of increased cartel/smuggling activity and acts of piracy. So, what I cannot fathom is why the Hartleys decided this little sightseeing jaunt into Mexican waters was a good idea. Something seems a little fishy to me.

One way or another the truth will eventually reveal itself in this case.

  31. krowdkat says:

I’m curious to see how this all pans out, but I must say, the wife sure looks down and closes her eyes a lot when answering the interviewers questions. Shifty shady in all aspects of body language. I’ve read somewhere when recalling events and being asked questions of said events, a truth teller will usually look sideways and upwards toward their brain matter to recall things they witnessed.

Those of you who said it’s a reminder of the Susan Smith story, I totally agree. Susan Smith seemed to look down and close her eyes quite a bit too, when making public comments, IIRC.

Also, she talks about her “theory” that the pirates took her husband’s body and the jet ski after she fled. Then she proceeds to say, the Mexican authorities aren’t combing the waters for her husband. WTH?!? He had a life vest on and the jet ski floats, both would have been easily viewable from the air. That comment of hers makes zero sense.

On the flip side, I don’t have a hard time believing that pirate drug runners would blink an eye at murdering anyone in waters that they want to control for illegal activity without requiring a booty. Maybe they were just sending a message by shooting the man.

  32. A Texas Grandfather says:

This is more than likley a hired killing. A bullet from an AK-47 entering the back of the head would not have an exit point unless it was fired at very close range. The whole back of the head and a portion of the top would have major trama with blood everywhere.

I don’t think they will find a body. Part of the deal was to remove it to another location via one of the boats. As I said earlier, the sheriff or other LE should look carefully at the couples background.

  33. krowdkat says:

Just a quick note. I asked myself what I would have done if faced with the circumstances wifey described. My immediate thought is that since my husband had on a life vest I would have probably tried to tow him (by holding onto his life vest straps) while piloting the jet ski. It might not have worked by I would have at least tried. Especially since she indicates the pirates took off after shooting him.

His seadoo seats 3, or 2 with a touring seat. I dont know what hers was, but his also has a mounting step with a wide base platform. Worse case scenario, she could have used the dock feed line to drag him, just pulled through the back armslots of his vest and frankly around the step or other areas she could secure it.

That said, if it were a panic situation-

Who am I kidding? I do not believe her, so you may as well tell me she fireman carried him out of the water with one hand and then that superior marksman got him again on her way past them.

Sorry, I have not been able to come up with more than 2 scenarios that are logical, neither of them paint her in an innocent light.

Okay, I got it…R. Sanchez finally got paid for a real MFH! I don’t believe this little chickadee either. I really understand pirates wanting that jet ski, it’s an expensive one that they could sell quickly in Mexico untraceable but dragging around a chubby white guy with a hole in his head! Come on wife, you can come up with a better story than that one.

So did her husband, change his pic I mean, how do you think he managed that?
    B

Yep, David’s profile picture is eerie. Very eerie. Who changed that?

@ zarpisimo- I have Googled for the past hour different combinations of a teen being murdered in the Loveland area in the late nineties. I have also included Google searches of Tiffany Young but have not found any information.
    —–
I have been googling an hour myself and can’t come up with any crime that resembles a bowling alley shooting, so blah?
    _____
I have read that she is 29 and he is 30. Her coming from Berthoud, Colorado and David coming from Loveland, Colorado. Tiffany is a dancer (google and facebook info), not a bad thing, but I will work my CO contacts.

I had heard that, but no confirmation, just fyi.

I checked David Michael Hartley’s facebook the first day this story broke and his page has not changed. Her page has been updated right along.

As far as a bowling alley murder I did find this. This guy Robert Zajac would have been about the right age.

This is posted on the In Honor of David Michael Hartley facebook page-
Mrs. Hartley, My husband and I were fishing on the Mexico side of Falcon that afternoon. We did hear gunfire and later saw the Border Patrol helicopter frantically flying over the area of the house that sits on the tip of a point(USA). We k…new then that something really bad had happened. Our first thought was dove hunters but the shooting just didn’t stop. Gov. Rick Perry stated that the Mexican officals haven’t had anyone say they heard gunshots. They didn’t ask US! They are evil and we will not let them get away with this. Pray without ceasing! We are so upset about this and will do everything we can to help you. We live in Odessa and it is happening here. God Bless you and David’s family. We are praying for his return and for justice. Margaret Leach is the poster.

Have we considered both of them being in on it? Has the body been recovered?

    No body.

And yes, I do not believe we can exclude that possibility at this time.

    Interesting . . . .

“Perry had harsh words for reports that the Mexican government had raised doubt about Tiffany Hartley’s story.

‘That’s not what I heard from [Mexico's] acting foreign secretary last night,’ Perry said. ‘And I think it’s reprehensible. Anyone who says anything other than this was pirates or just criminal element out on that lake that killed an innocent American — there is nothing there. We’ve asked all the right questions. Our sheriff has asked the right questions. Anyone who is trying to deflect off of what this actually is aught to be ashamed of themselves.’”

I had a very long conversation about Gov. Perry’s remarks this afternoon. Y’all should consider that being able to bring border issues into his campaign for re-election is not lost on his advisors.

That said, had I been the journalist speaking to him, I would have asked him, since he was comfortable what questions they asked Ms. Hartley, what those questions were, since he was so comfortable.

My first husband (look under narcissist in the dictionary and you will see his pic) told me that if you ever wanted to murder anyone and get away with it, all you had to do is take them out into international waters and throw them overboard with cement blocks tied to their feet. He added that no one has jurisdiction in international waters so no one would investigate thoroughly. His father was a homicide detective in Detroit for 40 years. His degree was in criminal justice. I was shocked/stunned to hear someone I loved contemplate such a thing. Naively, I thought, who thinks about how to get away with murder? Ack!

I was 21 and he 27 at the time. I left him 2 years later.

    That was in 1985.

whoa- she didnt even cry on tv- just a sad girl face. I was expecting her to not even be able to finish the story…. She either hired someone or they are faking his death for some cash-o-la. MOO

    Blink,

Did I read correctly that the couple had financially difficulty, yet managed to buy a new home recently? how so? I understand relocation for a job, but the couple seems to move often.

So much more to this than what initially appeared.

That the missing man’s facebook pics are changing after he has gone missing with a gun shot wound to the head….has me asking how the grieving widow has the time to do this now, or is the husband alive, at a remote location doing it?
