David Hartley Gunned Down On Jet Ski In Mexico : Tiffany Young-Hartley Facing Scrutiny

Posted by BOC Staff | Bizarre Crime,Blink,David Hartley,Falcon Lake,Mexican Territory,Murdered,Tiffany Young-Hartley | Tuesday 5 October 2010 10:34 pm

According to his wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, who called 911, David Hartley, 30, was gunned down by Mexican pirates while the couple ventured across the Falcon Resovior lakes US border to take pictures of the “Mexican Atlantis” or Old Guerreo.

HartleyJetSkiClose

Hartley says her husband was shot in the head and as a result “flew” off his jet ski while the couple was returning from the landmark on the Mexican side of the lake, after taking pictures. She goes on to say she became aware of 3 different boats chasing down the couple only after she saw bullets hitting the water next to her. As she turned around to see where they were coming from, she claims she witnessed her husbands murder.

David was driving a new Sea Doo RXT ski that can climb from 0–30MPH in 1.7 seconds and is capable of top-end speeds of over 60 MPH.  Blinkoncrime.com has not been able to confirm which model Ms. Hartley was driving. The couple had been on at least one earlier jet ski jaunt while still in Mexico, but was cut short due to a mishap with David’s craft on June 20th.

HartleyMovingJune2010

According to his wife, David was face-down in the water, wearing a life vest, after he was shot.

Despite the horror of what she had just witnessed and astonishingly avoiding injury to her or her watercraft, she circled back around, jumped off her jet ski, and turned her 250 lb. husband upright to observe the gunshot wound to his forehead. You read that correctly, according to Tiffany Hartley, while being chased from behind, David was shot from the front. Hartley maintains this is when she attempted to load him onto her jet ski, and also when two of the three boats were now positioned in front of her.

TiffanyFB

One of the alleged pirate boats from the front approached her within 10 ft. While she stared down the barrell of his gun, she was holding onto her husband with one hand, her ski with the other asking not to be shot. Apparently through some sort of Mexican telepathy or nautical sign language, the men who just ambushed the couple and murdered her husband in cold blood, made a decision to let her go and retreated IN FRONT OF HER.

Hartley claims she cannot identify any of the men, that they never said a word to her nor could she hear anything they may have said to each other, but believes the motive for the attack to be robbery or to kidnap her. It is not clear how Tiffany arrived at this conclusion as they never made an attempt to stop them or ask them for their money, she was off her $13,000 Sea doo they could have easily taken, and they let her go.

It was at this time that Hartley finally did hear something. She says she heard the voice of God tell her to leave David, save herself and get to safety. However, his instruction must have been non-specific because she proceeded to mount her ski in deep water, start it back up, and drive directly toward and then past the very band of gun weilding murderous cartel who minutes ago gunned down her highschool sweetheart and spouse of 8 years. (Editors note: I cannot imagine the nerve it takes to again have your back to the same crew who, unprovoked, sprayed the lake with bullets behind you while you were fleeing for your life).

While Tiffany admits the couple was aware of recent pirate activity in the area they learned about while David researched the location, she claims they had not heard of anymore incidents on Falcon Lake, which borders both Texas and Mexico, “in a while.”

The Hartley’s, who had recently been on a few tropical vacations, were in the process of relocating to Colorado next week from Reynosa, Mexico and McAllen Texas, where they had lived for only a few months, following David’s transfer request to Calfrac well services.

According to recent Facebook postings, although the couple could not agree on furniture tastes, they recently purchased a house full of it just after a luxury cruise and visit to a seminar for those experiencing financial difficulty.

I would love to be able to do no analysis and regergetate this story as reported by main stream media whereby not one reporter asks the obvious question:

After several known incidents of piracy in that location over the last months, why would the “pirates” suddenly go on a murderous rampage in lieu of attempting to rob a couple on jet skis that could outrun them on sight?

Not gonna happen. I have heard umpteen versions of Ms. Hartley’s version of events leading to the random execution of her husband.

None pass the smell test. However, just today, Zapata County Sheriff “Sigi” Gonzalez, Jr says his investigation, now aided by a witness who is a long standing member of the Zapata community, exonerates Mrs. Hartley of any wrongdoing.

Gonzalez completely rules out foul play on the part of Mrs. Hartley.

“A local witness saw Tiffany Hartley escaping on her jet-ski to the Texas side of the lake,” he said. “She came in at high speed and was being pursued by armed men in a Mexican fishing boat that that the witness clearly observed.”

Gonzalez said the witness was a long-standing member of the Zapata community who was well known to him and regarded as highly credible.

“The testimony of this witness dispels any idea Mrs. Hartley was involved in any wrongdoing regarding the murder of her husband,” he said firmly. “She called in a 911 phone call to our office at around 2:20 p.m. on the day of the incident, immediately after she got to shore, and her statements to my office confirm what the local witness observed.”

Unfortunately, the witness account does not match Tiffany Hartley’s own version of events. At no time has she ever said that she was again chased by the “pirates”, in fact, she claims she left them behind after driving “through” them.

Hartley references recent pirate activity, which is almost verbatim what she says happened to her and David, with the exception of the actual piracy:

On April 30, five people in two different boats were fishing on Falcon Lake and went to the Old Guerrero area, where they were taking photos of the old church. While they were there, a boat with four heavily tattooed men approached the two boats quickly. The men identified themselves as “Federales,” but they were not wearing uniforms. The men boarded the boats, demanded cash and asked “where are the drugs?” The fishermen told the men that they had no drugs and were just fishing and taking photos. They ended up giving the men $200 cash and left the area. The pirates followed the two boats, but the U.S. boats were able to outrun them and the men stopped following once the two boats entered U.S. waters.

In every recorded incident since April, the heavily tattoed pirates posing as “Federales” without uniforms, came upon anchored fishing boats, boarded them, robbed the fisherman at gunpoint of any personal cash, searched for drugs left without any violence. In the Hartley family interview on the Today show, Tiffany states that after David was hit, she circled around, jumped off her jetski, swam over to her husband and because he was “face down in the water” she had to turn him over where she discovered he was shot in the head.

It would seem I am not alone in my quagmire.  Mexican Investigators, who hold jurisdiction have already begun to question Ms. Hartley’s story.

Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney for the Miguel Aleman Province adjoining Falcon Lake on the Mexican side, has questioned whether Tiffany Hartley was involved in foul play.

Early this morning, Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez announced the Mexican Authorities will be searching the area where David Hartley was murdered, and have committed to “not leaving” until they find him. Tiffany Hartley, accompanied by her parents, but without David’s, filed a missing person report at the Mexican Consulate last night as a matter of procedure to “get the ball rolling”.

I wont beat you up! I said the same thing the other day. They are all very serious, with not much emotion. I hate to be judgemental at all, but it does make me wonder what the H is going on. At times I have wondered if they were all very politically motivated, but I think it really is TYH. She has remarked on his frequent traveling back in the early spring. You have to wonder, did he have some extracurricular activity or was he just a dedicated worker? Did she feel abandoned in a foreign country, are they broke and terribly in debt? I know my Dad always remarks on spending to us, how much was that, hope you had money for this, etc. I wonder if their family thought they were spending beyond their means?
I wish the media would form a united front on reporting whether these two guys are being held for questioning on this case or they arent, ya know?

Not even =only 11 days! -or less, depending on when she made that comment…Alarming, considering how much she says she loved him…. Personally, I would be stating, “I want to bury him, give closure to his family, and just get through this tragedy one day at time… (or something to that effect…

Just an observation after watching the Matt Lauer interview. Did anyone notice what TH said when Lauer asked her how she felt about the people who were suspicious of her story?? She said, “Everyone’s on my side.” Now where did we hear that before? Oh yeah, Terri Horman, who I believe gave an almost exact quote like “The police are on my side.” Funny, both initials TH.
I believe that David’s mother and father are going to break soon. The mother is already showing signs of that, you could hear it in her voice in this interview. This almost always happens when a spouse is involved, they at first support them until their story starts to fall apart.
Lauer also asked TH pointedly, “Did anyone in law enforcement either in Texas or Mexico tell you that they had 2 suspects in the case?” She hesitated for a moment, I knew she would have to say no and she did say no. She wasn’t about to lie about that or it would have blown her cover for good. So………….where is this 2 suspects information coming from anyway? If it didn’t come from US law enforcement or Mexico law enforcement, it had to be “planted” by someone.
I think we can now count Matt Lauer in the category of not buying the story.

Yes — there are lots of perks paid to employees who are willing to work in a foreign land, especially in a somewhat dangerous country like Mexico. This is how they recruit people to go. A solid life insurance policy could certainly be one of the perks.

Also, remember this incident occurred on Sept 30th — Coincidence??? Could this have been the last day they he qualified for these special foreign benefits, since he would no longer be working on the Mexico side (moving to CO next)????

Previous Poster: “BUT, what if, WHAT IF there is an added insurance policy for employees that states that if you get killed in Mexico, where he physically worked, then the pay off goes UP, not down? Perhaps if you work in a foreign country that is in a danger zone -then there is additional “incentive” in the form of insurance, that states that if you are killed in that country, then you get more???”

A generous company would also be covering some household expenses of the employee working in a foreign country. Since his company requested he work in Reynosa, it is a possible that his company picked up the rental house cost and other living expenses. This would free up a lot of cash to buy toys, etc. as many other posters have wondered about. How many toys could you buy if you didn’t have to pay for a mortgage, rent or utilities? If I were 20 again I’d opt for a Harley and a few jet ski’s too.

But remember, he was taking a job on the mainland next, and any of the perks they got for working in Mexico would now come to an end. This would be a big reality check. Suddenly you have to budget for the boring and mundane things in life, like a mortgage, household insurance, electricity, gas and water. Not near as exciting as the adventure they were living before.

None of this proves what really happened, of course. Just my humble opinion.

Like many new smart phones, my iphone has built in GPS that can pinpoint where I am on a map. It comes in handy when I am traveling in areas I am not familiar with. I have it with me all the time and I would absolutely have it with me if I were going out on a lake looking for a half submerged church. With no roads or signs to follow, that is the perfect use for it.

Where is her cell phone? If they were just innocently going out there to take pictures of the church, they would have taken their phones. If they left the phones in the truck, they probably had a reason.

Don’t some digital cameras have GPS capabilities too?

This was my biggest question- At a minimum, why no 2 ways?

Life insurance: As the prior poster suggested, there are many options for life insurance — company paid, company subsidized or a personal policy. Also, I don’t think it would take a huge life insurance windfall to start over with a new life in a foreign land. I think I could live “off the grid” pretty cheaply if I had no creditors and just needed to work for food/fun and basic shelter. A small insurance policy might allow me to buy a house in a remote location without the difficulty of having a mortgage. My opinion only. Just saying…

Then I thought, okay what would the signals mean? Like, playing with the ring means, “I can’t take this much longer?” “I haven’t heard from the insurance company?” “Call me tonight on the bat phone that no one knows about?” No really, this whole scenario is just so ridiculous to me, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you are right. Not my answer, pasted from elsewhere.

A jet-ski will only sink if it has been holed, or it’s hull otherwise opened up to the water- even then, the damage has to be very serious, because their hulls are divided up into several water-tight compartments. But they certainly don’t sink when they are stationary- they float under normal circumstances, just like boats do!

Yes, and I stand to be corrected if this is the case… she did state on March 1 that she was working to get off early, however, there were several news outlets that reported that she is a, “domestic housewife.” That said, I perhaps wrongfully jumped to the conclusion that she did not have a career, or even a job for that matter (other than church volunteer fundraisers). But I do certainly stand to be corrected if what I read is inaccurate:-) And in fact, I would love to know what her career path is/was, if there is one.

‘A body’.. ‘a body’.. does he not care if it’s Davids body?

How do you unofficially and secretly send word to the Zeta cartel? Are they listed in the phone book? Facebook? or would you have to know someone who knows them?

In another interview he states that hes sending word to the cartel through the media interviews hes been doing. So, with his above quote in mind, isn’t he sending a message to the cartel that they’re safe from prosecution and that he just wants ‘a body’ so he can close the case?

They could email her photos of them and she could tell them if she recognizes them, but she will NOT go into Mexico, it wouldn’t be safe.

Her lack of desire for justice to be brought to the killer, whoever the hell it is, is astounding. She just glosses right over it and even said “it isn’t important”. It’s the border issues that are her main concern. When JVM asked her WHO in the White House she wanted to call her, she said it didn’t matter who, or if SHE was called, she just wants SOMEONE from the White House to address the border issues.

    http://www.themonitor.com/articles/hartley-43519-team-vest.html

    [snip'd]

A forensics team is still analyzing the life vest worn by the wife of a man believed to have been killed on Falcon Lake by Mexican pirates, said the sheriff investigating the case.

Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said the vest has not been returned to the couple’s family, even though the blue-and-green garment was featured on NBC’s Today show Monday morning during an “exclusive look” at evidence authorities have analyzed.

During a Monitor interview Monday afternoon, the sheriff said he was not sure whether the vest had been returned to Tiffany Young-Hartley, whose husband has been missing since Sept. 30. Later in the same interview, he gave a conflicting statement, saying the vest is in the custody of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

If the spot turns out to be blood from David Michael Hartley it would be the first significant physical evidence to come to public light in a case that has garnered international attention and has created tension between the United States and Mexico.

Authorities are trying to determine whose blood stained the piece of clothing, Gonzalez said.

“The test we ran showed it could be human blood,” Gonzalez said. “The next step is to determine whose blood it is.”

  25. Mermaid14 says:

If the TH life vest was returned to her then that means there was nothing of significance found on it. Otherwise it would have been held for grand jury or further testing. So, now we have to ask, “where is the blood”. She got off her jetski, pulled her husband toward her, flipped him over then attempted to lift him onto her jetski? HOw could that happen without any blood from his gunshot wound ending up somewhere on her. Like the rest of the story, it defies logic and physics.

The Zapata County Sheriff tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the attackers may have already gotten rid of the body. Tiffany Hartley says the growing national media attention in the case is putting pressure on Mexican authorities to do more. She told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that progress is being made in the case. Tiffany answers “two people” but a third or fourth people was on the boat but “she didn’t see them”. She must have ESP.

at the end of the Anderson Cooper interview she talks about the importance of securing our border after finding closure with David. Is that so that morons like her and her husband can’t cross over into Mexico illegally? I mean, if she’s so concerned about border safety, why then did they knowingly cross over into Mexico?!!

I tend to believe David’s family. I guess I can see real grief in their face, especially in their eyes. And that, to me makes it that much worse that Tiffany (and maybe David) could do something like this and hurt their family so much.

Why is it that the news media seems to blindly buy into her story? Is there some unwritten rule in the media that you have to do this? And it seems like such irresponsible journalism to be reporting about these potential suspects, the two brothers who have been supposedly terrorizing people in Mexico? It seems like it’s all about a race to be the first to report any and every unsubstantiated bit of information, and then later go back and correct it. Very disappointing.

Did I miss Tiffany’s parents & family coming to her support in all of this ?

This is what stood out for me from the Anderson Cooper transcript:

HARTLEY: Our jet ski is about 10 feet long and I was in the back of the jet ski and they were at the front of it, so about 10 feet.

Why was she on the back of the jet ski?

  41. crimesolver says:

MELISSAB…Yeah, can’t tell you how many times my wife has lost a set of keys in her life…even in the house. She even laughs at herself. Plus, as someone added yesterday, as little as TH was/would she drive truck? I also SAY, he would have backed down into lake to lauch Jetskis, (her height would make is clumsy for her.) Is there surveilence equipment/video that show them launching off at Lake? I also like what MADILU or was it NANA2 said about wasting gas for her “so called time report of 5 minutes at church.” My wife loves photography and history…and I can tell you that she would not have settled for a few snaps of the church. We would have dismounted, and she would have taken about 20(lol) photos of each building/town artifact….inside & out. The 5 minute remark TH made, so contradicts the very reason they made the decision to illegally cross the border.

  42. crimesolver says:

One more thought…surely the LE has confiscated her computer. Wonder if there could be photos of church/town from previous visits (history buff, 2 1/2 years in area…but takes photos a week before they are to move?) This would also contradict her statements.

    Tiffany Hartley looking for closure
    by Katie Lopez

    (snip)

“This situation that we’re in is tragic and awful, I want my husband back,” said Hartley. “But now I think its given light to the rest of the United States of what needs to happen down here.”

    (She sounds like Miss America)

  44. Camsmom says:

I am so sick of reading Tiffany Hartley Says She Will take a Lie Detector as the headline to all the google searches on this woman! Tiffany Hartley needs to stop saying she will and get it done already! It would have been the first thing I would have done b4 my media tour begun (j/k, I wouldnt have went on the media tour!), she had to know there was going to be speculation. However I am pretty sure when Tiffany says she will, maybe, so and so doesnt think I need to, but possibly, maybe I will, pretty much means NO I wont!

  45. Mom3.0 says:

melissab, thanks and I hear what your saying- but that makes it even more strange IMO that the only ones, in the main stream media, to put up some hard hitting questions about Tiffany’s accounts are Shepard Smith, Wendy Murphy, and Michelle Malkin.

IMO these reporters are often times only known for their bias, yet they are asking the questions and doing so in a respectful manner. They, like our Blink, deserve to be commended. IMO

Where the hell are the ‘real reporters’ on this story?

What is going on in this case-

No one took the jet ski into evidence? No one took her life jacket into evidence? Did they check her for signs of firing a gun?

So far the only ‘evidence’ we have heard of that supposedly supports her account is a traffic stop earlier in the day- which only really supports that the man driving- I guess David, said he was going to spend all day at Falcon lake-and the other evidence, is that border patrol saw them eating in subway- which supports what? that they were hungry and…?

The next evidence offered up to support her story is 1 witness that says he saw her speeding away from the scene of the crime- he gives an account that is different than that of Tiffany, but it somehow supports her account…Huh?

Then we have the 911 call- which she is supposedly too distraught to make herself, yet when given the phone she is mostly calm IMO then she basically echos what the 911 operator asks- offering up no other details except that David was too heavy to pick up and bring back….

Most importantly, we have “microscopic” blood evidence, on her life jacket- which says to me, there is too little too examine for DNA- and even if they could- she is in possession of it… Huh? Did they use luminol, or BlueStar technology on it? On her jet ski? on her shoes? Did they type the blood? Is it Davids?

Did they check her jacket and shoes and jet ski for powder residue?

These shouldn’t be afterthoughts in an investigation they should be well known and well followed procedures. Just because she was on Falcon lake, just because she says David did this and that -does not make it so- David is missing, presumed dead on only her word…. what is wrong with this picture?

  46. KB in OR says:

I vote for more interviews for Miss Tiffany. Give her enough rope…..

  47. Camsmom says:

This is cut from Peter Hyatt’s blog Statement Anaylsis, it id from Mrs. Hartleys Anderson Cooper Interview last night. It is great! He catches so much that i dont see or hear in her interviews!

HARTLEY: There were three boats that were chasing us and then one boat came up to me and I saw two people in that boat. But there was a third or a fourth person in that boat. I just didn’t see them.
In statement analysis, we note anything spoken of in the “negative” as a subject of any interview should only tell us what happened, and not what happened; what they saw, and what they didn’t see. When a subject tells us what didn’t happen, what wasn’t said, what wasn’t seen, in the negative, it is not only an indiator of deception, but it should also be flagged as a revelation of new information. Note her answer:

    1. There were three boats that were chasing us

Note that 3 is the “liar’s number” (McClish) meaning that when a deceptive person needs to choose a number, they often cling to the number 3 (unless they are pulled over and asked how many beers they had in which they will say, “two, Officer”).

This does not mean that three suspects can’t exist, on the 3rd floor, at 3 o’clock. It can happen. But going by statistics, if the number 3 enters an interview, it should be flagged for follow up questions for clarity.

    2. then one boat came up to me

Note that this boat came up to “me” and not “us”. When this story breaks, we will learn that so many of the details that Tiffany gave were accurately reported. 90% of lies contain truth (LSI). Why did the one boat come up to her only, and not “us”, as she said she was with David?

Because he was dead and she was alone? A person with a dead body may consider herself to be alone.

Note that she reported that he was not dead, but still making noises.

    3. “I saw two people in that boat”

First person singular, past tense passes the test for reliability. We can say that she did see two people in that boat. Note “that” indicates distance, whereas “this” indicates closeness. She reported that “that” boat was a jet ski length from her. She saw 2 people on that boat.

Note that “people” is gender neutral. This is another indication that she is withholding the identity of the men. In another interview she reported that they were male and in their mid 20′s,. but here, they are only “people”.

    4. But there was a third or a fourth person in that boat. I just didn’t see them

This shows that Tiffany had knowledge of the occupants of the boat.

  48. lily says:

Now Tiffany is claiming she has experienced cartel checkpoints in McAllen – AND – this is even more surreal – she said that David told her he was stopped & robbed by the police in Reynosa and didn’t tell her about it for 1 1/2 years because he “protected” her from a lot of things. It just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

This is an audio interview – about 18 minutes long at The Monitor. The whole thing is bizarre but at about 12:45 in it starts getting really really deep.

    http://www.themonitor.com/articles/hartley-43519-team-vest.html

    WOW.
    Good Find Lily.

Why wouldn’t she know if their rent money was stolen, and why would they be paying in cash?

  49. Lori D says:

Blink, have you done any research into the possibility that David may have been involved in any type of oil product theft? I keep coming back to those posts that said someone was under invesigation…after more searching I think they were referring to david.

Calfrac was working for Pemex. Mexicos state owned oil company. Pemex sued 5 US oil companies claiming they’ve purchased stolen fuel from Pemex. I also read that there’s a black market for oil drilling products. Is it possible that David was under investigation and made himself disappear, or since he was going back to Colorado, maybe the cartel figured he was of no use to them and did kill him?

    http://www.upstreamonline.com/live/article224798.ece

“In Burgos, Pemex has long grappled with criminal gangs that hijack tanker trucks and tap pipelines to steal fuel and condensate, a gasoline-like byproduct of natural gas output, often with the help of corrupt Pemex employees.

“The government accuses these increasingly sophisticated groups of collaborating with drug cartels in return for protection and help smuggling stolen fuel.”

Could the Hartleys have been under the protection of the cartel and that’s why they weren’t afraid living in Reynosa?
