David Hartley Gunned Down On Jet Ski In Mexico : Tiffany Young-Hartley Facing Scrutiny

Posted by BOC Staff | Bizarre Crime,Blink,David Hartley,Falcon Lake,Mexican Territory,Murdered,Tiffany Young-Hartley | Tuesday 5 October 2010 10:34 pm

According to his wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, who called 911, David Hartley, 30, was gunned down by Mexican pirates while the couple ventured across the Falcon Resovior lakes US border to take pictures of the “Mexican Atlantis” or Old Guerreo.

HartleyJetSkiClose

Hartley says her husband was shot in the head and as a result “flew” off his jet ski while the couple was returning from the landmark on the Mexican side of the lake, after taking pictures. She goes on to say she became aware of 3 different boats chasing down the couple only after she saw bullets hitting the water next to her. As she turned around to see where they were coming from, she claims she witnessed her husbands murder.

David was driving a new Sea Doo RXT ski that can climb from 0–30MPH in 1.7 seconds and is capable of top-end speeds of over 60 MPH.  Blinkoncrime.com has not been able to confirm which model Ms. Hartley was driving. The couple had been on at least one earlier jet ski jaunt while still in Mexico, but was cut short due to a mishap with David’s craft on June 20th.

HartleyMovingJune2010

According to his wife, David was face-down in the water, wearing a life vest, after he was shot.

Despite the horror of what she had just witnessed and astonishingly avoiding injury to her or her watercraft, she circled back around, jumped off her jet ski, and turned her 250 lb. husband upright to observe the gunshot wound to his forehead. You read that correctly, according to Tiffany Hartley, while being chased from behind, David was shot from the front. Hartley maintains this is when she attempted to load him onto her jet ski, and also when two of the three boats were now positioned in front of her.

TiffanyFB

One of the alleged pirate boats from the front approached her within 10 ft. While she stared down the barrell of his gun, she was holding onto her husband with one hand, her ski with the other asking not to be shot. Apparently through some sort of Mexican telepathy or nautical sign language, the men who just ambushed the couple and murdered her husband in cold blood, made a decision to let her go and retreated IN FRONT OF HER.

Hartley claims she cannot identify any of the men, that they never said a word to her nor could she hear anything they may have said to each other, but believes the motive for the attack to be robbery or to kidnap her. It is not clear how Tiffany arrived at this conclusion as they never made an attempt to stop them or ask them for their money, she was off her $13,000 Sea doo they could have easily taken, and they let her go.

It was at this time that Hartley finally did hear something. She says she heard the voice of God tell her to leave David, save herself and get to safety. However, his instruction must have been non-specific because she proceeded to mount her ski in deep water, start it back up, and drive directly toward and then past the very band of gun weilding murderous cartel who minutes ago gunned down her highschool sweetheart and spouse of 8 years. (Editors note: I cannot imagine the nerve it takes to again have your back to the same crew who, unprovoked, sprayed the lake with bullets behind you while you were fleeing for your life).

While Tiffany admits the couple was aware of recent pirate activity in the area they learned about while David researched the location, she claims they had not heard of anymore incidents on Falcon Lake, which borders both Texas and Mexico, “in a while.”

The Hartley’s, who had recently been on a few tropical vacations, were in the process of relocating to Colorado next week from Reynosa, Mexico and McAllen Texas, where they had lived for only a few months, following David’s transfer request to Calfrac well services.

According to recent Facebook postings, although the couple could not agree on furniture tastes, they recently purchased a house full of it just after a luxury cruise and visit to a seminar for those experiencing financial difficulty.

I would love to be able to do no analysis and regergetate this story as reported by main stream media whereby not one reporter asks the obvious question:

After several known incidents of piracy in that location over the last months, why would the “pirates” suddenly go on a murderous rampage in lieu of attempting to rob a couple on jet skis that could outrun them on sight?

Not gonna happen. I have heard umpteen versions of Ms. Hartley’s version of events leading to the random execution of her husband.

None pass the smell test. However, just today, Zapata County Sheriff “Sigi” Gonzalez, Jr says his investigation, now aided by a witness who is a long standing member of the Zapata community, exonerates Mrs. Hartley of any wrongdoing.

Gonzalez completely rules out foul play on the part of Mrs. Hartley.

“A local witness saw Tiffany Hartley escaping on her jet-ski to the Texas side of the lake,” he said. “She came in at high speed and was being pursued by armed men in a Mexican fishing boat that that the witness clearly observed.”

Gonzalez said the witness was a long-standing member of the Zapata community who was well known to him and regarded as highly credible.

“The testimony of this witness dispels any idea Mrs. Hartley was involved in any wrongdoing regarding the murder of her husband,” he said firmly. “She called in a 911 phone call to our office at around 2:20 p.m. on the day of the incident, immediately after she got to shore, and her statements to my office confirm what the local witness observed.”

Unfortunately, the witness account does not match Tiffany Hartley’s own version of events. At no time has she ever said that she was again chased by the “pirates”, in fact, she claims she left them behind after driving “through” them.

Hartley references recent pirate activity, which is almost verbatim what she says happened to her and David, with the exception of the actual piracy:

On April 30, five people in two different boats were fishing on Falcon Lake and went to the Old Guerrero area, where they were taking photos of the old church. While they were there, a boat with four heavily tattooed men approached the two boats quickly. The men identified themselves as “Federales,” but they were not wearing uniforms. The men boarded the boats, demanded cash and asked “where are the drugs?” The fishermen told the men that they had no drugs and were just fishing and taking photos. They ended up giving the men $200 cash and left the area. The pirates followed the two boats, but the U.S. boats were able to outrun them and the men stopped following once the two boats entered U.S. waters.

In every recorded incident since April, the heavily tattoed pirates posing as “Federales” without uniforms, came upon anchored fishing boats, boarded them, robbed the fisherman at gunpoint of any personal cash, searched for drugs left without any violence. In the Hartley family interview on the Today show, Tiffany states that after David was hit, she circled around, jumped off her jetski, swam over to her husband and because he was “face down in the water” she had to turn him over where she discovered he was shot in the head.

It would seem I am not alone in my quagmire.  Mexican Investigators, who hold jurisdiction have already begun to question Ms. Hartley’s story.

Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney for the Miguel Aleman Province adjoining Falcon Lake on the Mexican side, has questioned whether Tiffany Hartley was involved in foul play.

Early this morning, Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez announced the Mexican Authorities will be searching the area where David Hartley was murdered, and have committed to “not leaving” until they find him. Tiffany Hartley, accompanied by her parents, but without David’s, filed a missing person report at the Mexican Consulate last night as a matter of procedure to “get the ball rolling”.

Lawmaker: Severed head of investigator in Hartley case delivered to Mexican military

Considering we know the ATF and DEA is involved, this throws me. There could be a million reasons for this if true.

I would say there goes the theory of hiding David’s body for any reason.

I find it amazing this site trying to spin that she somehow had something to do with this when the drug cartels are severing heads of the investigators. I know she had some ties in Mexico but to imply that she STILL is involved is bad form at this point.

I have not implied she was “involved.”

I am outright stating that her version of events is not truthful or supported by evidence, logic, or imagination.

So now its safe to say if they had David’s body they would deliver it right?

It depends on whatever “message” they were trying to convey.

There is a lot of other things going on there, and btw how does Gonzalez know who gave docs to the news, and why say that is why he was murdered? Frustrating.

Also, Hate to post again, I read that this Investigator was NOT the lead investigator of the Hartley case. He was the lead investigator looking into the activity of the gangs. I do not know if this is true or not, I just read it on FB.

  7. lily says:

So the investigator – Rolando Flores Villegas was the one who “outed” the two Saldivar Farias brothers to the media? Interesting:

    http://www.krgv.com/content/news/story/Mexican-Investigator-Decapitated/OpJrIpPgVkO31hds1hBhbw.cspx

The Mexican investigator who Gonzalez said was killed delivered documents to a CHANNEL 5 NEWS photographer over the weekend in Reynosa, Mexico. He also provided our photographer with information about two Mexican brothers, alleged Zeta cartel members, suspected of involvement in the alleged murder of David Hartley. Villegas said Juan Pedro and Jose Manuel Saldivar Farias are suspected members of the Zeta drug cartel, wanted criminals, and members of a pirate gang that has been terrorizing boaters on Falcon Lake and residents of a nearby Mexican town. The brothers are named as suspects in the Sept. 30 reported deadly shooting of David Hartley on Falcon Lake.

finally reading this article & the comment in the article that I found most interesting was from Tiffany’s mother :

    snip)

“Young, who lives outside LaSalle in Weld County, was at work when his wife, Cynthia, called. The words that tumbled from her mouth made no sense.

David’s been involved in a shooting. Tiffany was chased but got away.”

She doesn’t say David’s been shot which I guess would have been the words I would have used but that David’s been involved in a shooting.. Interesting choice of words.. IMO

I am starting to think this confirms my suspicioun that the couple might be involved with a Mexican Drug Cartel if this is the case as this tends to be their MO. **************************
I thought that comment was beyond bizarre as well -the answer should have been along the lines of “I saw three people on the boat” She had also said a week ago that there were 3 boats with 3 people on each boat. She also says that they saw the boats AFTER they took the pictures, but then said later that when they saw boats AS they arrived at the church…hmmm…

she also has said that the jet ski was between her and the boat that came up to her, but in another interview said that she was at the back of her 10 ft ski, and the boat was at the front end, so it was 10 feet away from her… Again, starboard, port, bow, stern…huh, which is it????

Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said the vest has not been returned to the couple’s family, even though the blue-and-green garment was featured on NBC’s Today show Monday morning during an “exclusive look” at evidence authorities have analyzed.

During a Monitor interview Monday afternoon, the sheriff said he was not sure whether the vest had been returned to Tiffany Young-Hartley, whose husband has been missing since Sept. 30. Later in the same interview, he gave a conflicting statement, saying the vest is in the custody of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

    In response to Lori D..

There should be a strong look at the Hartleys finances, besides Calfrac should look at their books. I am kind of thinking that if it was a set up to vanish without a trace, both would do this, or David would say he going out by himself, and leave Tiffany in the dark at home. I don’t see how he would leave her under the microscope thinking they committed the perfect crime.

If it is corruption of some sort, than that will show itself, because he is not controlling the books anymore. However it doesn’t make sense why he left his wife, or they agreed to this set up.

I really don’t know what happened. My guess is the trail may start at Reynosa rather than at Falcon Lake/Nuevo Guerrero/Viejo Guerrero.

Tamaulipas (TAHM-uh-LEE-pus) state prosecutor’s office spokesman Ruben Rios said Tuesday that Commander Rolando Flores, the head of state investigators in the border city of Ciudad Miguel Aleman, was killed. Rios did not say how Flores was killed but said his slaying was unrelated to the investigation into the reported slaying of American David Hartley.

  20. Intrigued says:

Just as I suspected — in this interview she confirms that they lived in Reynosa because his employer PAID ALL THEIR LIVING EXPENSES, and they did NOT pay these once they moved to McAllen. This is a very common set up for an EX Pat (employee working in foreign country).

Anyway you slice it, that had to be a huge blow to their household budget. Now instead of buying toys, they had to think about things like rent and utilities.

The financial windfall they had been enjoying ended abruptly.

I hope investigators are looking at all angles.

Wow. It is very frightening what is going on down there. In the CNN video, Will Ripley states that this was the same invesitgator who gave him documents Sunday evening regarding this investigation. This investigator provided channel five news with the two suspects names and information, and according to Ripley it “appears this man may have paid for that with his life.” He calls him courageous for providing channel 5 with this information.

For me, this changes everything. These men are monsters, and it seems as though they used the Harley’s as a statement. Obviously, this investigator believed Tiffany’s story enough to risk his life for it.

    RIP

Daisy, he is not the only person that supplied that information, which the Mexican Consulate quickly stated was inaccurate and that they had NOT identified any suspects.

I have read this evening in fact, his murder is not related to the Hartley Investigation as a result.

The Cartel is notorious for “I will tell you what we are responsible for, not the other way around.” I think true “boots on the ground” knew exactly what this was.

To keep it in context, why would the men in 3 boats, whom now apparently only one of which was armed (snark) have let her go? This is the fatal flaw in her story, imo.

  35. DesertGirl says:

wow, I just can’t get a grip on what I think happened. I concur that TH is not telling everything. Logic shows me that. Emotion (not necessarily her lack thereof, but what [odd] emotions she has shown in response to questions in these interviews) shows me that.

As a jetskiier, I can share this: If I were riding full speed (55mph), there is no way I could see if someone was shooting at the water beneath or around my boat. (Jetski=boat). The waves propelled by the ski would absolutely “cover” whatever splash the “bullets” were making. And I would not be able to hear the shots. Jetskis are LOUD when you are on top and going full speed.

And if TH says she saw DH fly over [the front] of his ski, she is either lacking in common sense, or he was totally stopped and shot from behind with a very, very large caliber bullet – large enough to send him up and over the front of his ski. Notice I said UP and over. Can’t just flip over the front… ick, from a logical standpoint, this story just doesn’t work.

And what is she saying… she was on the “side” of her jetski? WTH? You can’t ride sidesaddle on a jetski.

And one more thing – I am a tall, solid fit woman and there is no way – even with my adrenaline pumping and my husband dying – that I could hoist my hubby onto my ski from in the water OR from atop my boat. Just can’t do it. I’d tie him to it aand motor off that way. No chance, no way, no how I could lift him [dead weight even if not dead] from the water. Defies law of physics. (ok, maybe not the laws of physics, but you get my drift…)

@Nana, If you research the killings and violence along the border, you will find that there is no rhyme or reason to a lot of it. But, no, I do not think it was retaliation for putting blame on the wrong suspects. But, I DO think a hornet’s nest is being stirred.

I am so pissed that JVM is supporting TH’s story. JVM has the story of the investigator’s beheading on tonite to support that TH is telling the truth! What wrong with her. IMO TH shot David, plain and simple. Hope the truth comes out soon cuz I can’t stand this anymore.

I am going to hear if for this, so excuse my snark, but if you want JVM to investigate this outside of her “prep” 30 minutes before her show, tell her a dog was on the back of David’s ski and is missing.

I have seen her be more proactive for PETA. No disrespect to PETA, I am a supporter, but a man’s head was in luggage.

    HELLO?

The unfortunate assassination of the Mexican LE investigator that has been linked to this case could have been facilitated by gangs feeling wrongly or rightly accused of David Hartley’s murder. I do not believe that this gives any validity either way to TH’s story. I do think it would be very dangerous at this time for DH if he is in fact in Mexico. I would much rather learn now that this was a farce and David was alive and safe. When I hear TH say “our story” it leads me to believe she does not take ownership of the story. At least one more person belongs to her “our story”. David’s mother seems genuinely distraught over David’s disappearance. Who else belongs to “our story”.
As a US citizen I do not want this to turn into a “shot that was heard across the border”. TH, take a poly! Put your involvement to rest! IF you, TH, are not willing to take a poly than anything you say should be taken with a big huge grain of salt. For God’s sake a young man is dead, do the right thing. Take the 20 minutes out of you interview time and take the test. Dr. Phil would be glad to arrange it for you. Sorry for the rant but I am pissed. We have innocent people missing like Kyron and this is just Bull….

When asked by Anderson Cooper how many guns there were she couldn’t answer. She said all she noticed was “the one pointed at her.” If I saw three boats full of people I might remember how many of them were aiming guns at me. That’s not something anyone would forget. Also, who has a memorial service for someone missing at sea for several days? The last thing anyone would want to believe is that their loved one was deceased. They would hold out for as long as possible. In my opinion, that speaks volumes. A memorial service would be the last thing I’d be worried about, considering the body hasn’t even been located. The more interviews I see, the more I’m convinced she’s involved.

This article contains a bit more information about the previously named suspects, as well as confirmation of the murder of the investigator:

  41. PackLeader5 says:

The rumors around here (I repeat—rumors) are that the beheading is a “message” from the Zetas (The Drug Gang that rules that area, from which the two “suspects” emerged), that false accusations will not be tolerated.

This case has made the Mexican government look horrid. What better way to satisfy everyone’s hunger and put the case to rest than to dangle a couple of known criminals in front of everyone, and say they have the killers. I remember when they “outed” these two guys—they said they’re known for burning homes in the area, killings, and robberies. I remember thinking, “…and they’re just now picking these guys up?” No, I think not. They picked some bad guys in the area, that everyone would say, “Yeah, sure…I’ll go with that” and called them suspects. The Gang didn’t like it, I’m guessing because they know what’s really going on— and they sent a message. The Zetas are Scary Bad. This is the kind of stuff they do.

This is 100% exactly what I believe, my first thought when I heard, period.

This “cartel” is 100% deliberate. If they had Hartley, or were responsible, God Forgive the Image, it would have been his head in that suitcase, metaphorically.

Now, the Mexican govt is finally acknowledging that an investigator was killed today, however Tamaulipas state prosecutor spokesman told The Associated Press that Flores’ murder was “unrelated to the investigation” into David Hartley’s death.

I am ready to eat crow! I had no idea things were as bad as what is being reported. Please accept my appoligies for being so ignorant!

  44. GriffyMom says:

This story gets more bizarre every day. I just can’t believe that these violent members of a drug cartel starting shooting at two innocent sightseers for no reason. I hope officials are looking into the prospect that the Hartleys could have been financing their exotic vacations with an illegal side job, such as picking up one side of the lake and selling it on the other. A gunshot wound to the forehead sounds more like an execution than a lucky shot by a “pirate” hitting a swiftly moving target.

Stay on this one, Blink. I’m out of the closet as a news junkie and I’m continually sending my friends to BOC for genuine investigative reporting. Nancy and Jane Velez? Ha! They’re entertainers. And not very good ones, either.

  45. Megan says:

I am not sure if this has been asked yet so I am sorry if it has.

Was this lead investigator investigating any other cases?

With that said, I also see the investigator being killed because he was buying TYH story and the blame was going on the drug cartels/pirates. I don’t buy TYH story. I also don’t think that she and her husband were involved with the drug cartel. It just doesnt add up in my book.

  46. PackLeader5 says:

OK, I’ve just changed my thinking… and this is just MOO…but…

Tiffany and David are running from the Carte (most likely the Zetas). While David worked in Reynosa, he messed with the wrong people, or pissed the wrong people off. That’s why they moved back to the US, thinking that it would be better. But the Zetas have people everywhere, on both sides of the border. So, Tiffany and David decide they’ll move back to Colorado. That is, until they realized that these guys will follow them there too. How to escape???? Their plan is to fake David’s death, let the publicity die down, and Tiffany will join him and they’ll change their names and move on with life. I’m not saying I think it’s a good plan—I just think it might have been THEIR plan. There’s many flaws—but I still don’t think David is dead. And, I’d bet there’s a few thugs in Mexico who are just as interested in where he is as we are.

Busy day. Lily great find on that audio. A couple of things I noticed. It seems like TYH was teetering on admitting DH may have been at risk of losing his job? How they were going to cut back and so forth. No real plan on living arrangements for CO, yet they furnished the house or whatever in Mc Allen for just a brief period. What were they going to do with the stuff in a hotel in CO?
    * She had a mens wedding ring on noted by the female interviewer
    * They plan for cremation when they get the body back
    * Quit learning Spanish, but it was ok, she rarely went to the store there
    * The potential robbery already mentioned
    * They had all expenses paid by company since they agreed to reside in Reynosa, unlike the majority that ? commute
Thats all I can recall, the interviewer was excellent, also w/ her soft soothing voice, really got her talking.
Last night I came across some Calfrec meeting minutes. They did speak to the less than promising returns on the Mexico adventure. I also saw several ads for positions, mainly supervisor, range in salary, 52-97k. I dont know how that would compare to his salary.

Lol, I know, that reporter did a great job. How are you moving a house full of furniture and your person in a week with no place to live? No storage lined up? Movers?

Could some mathematical, physics-savvy type person please jump in here? If you’re David on a jet ski going about 50-60 mph or whatever they were going, and David weighs 250 lbs. and the jetski weighs ? lbs. and considering the drag from the water, if you’re hit from behind and you slump on your seat and can’t control the jetski anymore, would this action propel you FORWARD? Or would you actually fall off to the side? Or would you fall back and the jet ski goes flying off in front of you? Just curious about this “flying forward” claim because it doesn’t seem logical that he would go forward over the front of the jetski. They’re both traveling at the same rate of speed so it seems like he would just fall off to the side or back and get left behind. Since he has the jetski “key” I’m assuming and it is usually around your wrist and comes out of its ignition when you fall off, the jetski would continue on for a moment or two after he fell off but would then stop. Or the key DIDN’t disconnect and still the ski would continue on much faster than the falling passenger. So how would he fall FORWARD? I can’t picture it.
