David Hartley Gunned Down On Jet Ski In Mexico : Tiffany Young-Hartley Facing Scrutiny

Posted by BOC Staff | Bizarre Crime,Blink,David Hartley,Falcon Lake,Mexican Territory,Murdered,Tiffany Young-Hartley | Tuesday 5 October 2010 10:34 pm

According to his wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, who called 911, David Hartley, 30, was gunned down by Mexican pirates while the couple ventured across the Falcon Resovior lakes US border to take pictures of the “Mexican Atlantis” or Old Guerreo.

HartleyJetSkiClose

Hartley says her husband was shot in the head and as a result “flew” off his jet ski while the couple was returning from the landmark on the Mexican side of the lake, after taking pictures. She goes on to say she became aware of 3 different boats chasing down the couple only after she saw bullets hitting the water next to her. As she turned around to see where they were coming from, she claims she witnessed her husbands murder.

David was driving a new Sea Doo RXT ski that can climb from 0–30MPH in 1.7 seconds and is capable of top-end speeds of over 60 MPH.  Blinkoncrime.com has not been able to confirm which model Ms. Hartley was driving. The couple had been on at least one earlier jet ski jaunt while still in Mexico, but was cut short due to a mishap with David’s craft on June 20th.

HartleyMovingJune2010

According to his wife, David was face-down in the water, wearing a life vest, after he was shot.

Despite the horror of what she had just witnessed and astonishingly avoiding injury to her or her watercraft, she circled back around, jumped off her jet ski, and turned her 250 lb. husband upright to observe the gunshot wound to his forehead. You read that correctly, according to Tiffany Hartley, while being chased from behind, David was shot from the front. Hartley maintains this is when she attempted to load him onto her jet ski, and also when two of the three boats were now positioned in front of her.

TiffanyFB

One of the alleged pirate boats from the front approached her within 10 ft. While she stared down the barrell of his gun, she was holding onto her husband with one hand, her ski with the other asking not to be shot. Apparently through some sort of Mexican telepathy or nautical sign language, the men who just ambushed the couple and murdered her husband in cold blood, made a decision to let her go and retreated IN FRONT OF HER.

Hartley claims she cannot identify any of the men, that they never said a word to her nor could she hear anything they may have said to each other, but believes the motive for the attack to be robbery or to kidnap her. It is not clear how Tiffany arrived at this conclusion as they never made an attempt to stop them or ask them for their money, she was off her $13,000 Sea doo they could have easily taken, and they let her go.

It was at this time that Hartley finally did hear something. She says she heard the voice of God tell her to leave David, save herself and get to safety. However, his instruction must have been non-specific because she proceeded to mount her ski in deep water, start it back up, and drive directly toward and then past the very band of gun weilding murderous cartel who minutes ago gunned down her highschool sweetheart and spouse of 8 years. (Editors note: I cannot imagine the nerve it takes to again have your back to the same crew who, unprovoked, sprayed the lake with bullets behind you while you were fleeing for your life).

While Tiffany admits the couple was aware of recent pirate activity in the area they learned about while David researched the location, she claims they had not heard of anymore incidents on Falcon Lake, which borders both Texas and Mexico, “in a while.”

The Hartley’s, who had recently been on a few tropical vacations, were in the process of relocating to Colorado next week from Reynosa, Mexico and McAllen Texas, where they had lived for only a few months, following David’s transfer request to Calfrac well services.

According to recent Facebook postings, although the couple could not agree on furniture tastes, they recently purchased a house full of it just after a luxury cruise and visit to a seminar for those experiencing financial difficulty.

I would love to be able to do no analysis and regergetate this story as reported by main stream media whereby not one reporter asks the obvious question:

After several known incidents of piracy in that location over the last months, why would the “pirates” suddenly go on a murderous rampage in lieu of attempting to rob a couple on jet skis that could outrun them on sight?

Not gonna happen. I have heard umpteen versions of Ms. Hartley’s version of events leading to the random execution of her husband.

None pass the smell test. However, just today, Zapata County Sheriff “Sigi” Gonzalez, Jr says his investigation, now aided by a witness who is a long standing member of the Zapata community, exonerates Mrs. Hartley of any wrongdoing.

Gonzalez completely rules out foul play on the part of Mrs. Hartley.

“A local witness saw Tiffany Hartley escaping on her jet-ski to the Texas side of the lake,” he said. “She came in at high speed and was being pursued by armed men in a Mexican fishing boat that that the witness clearly observed.”

Gonzalez said the witness was a long-standing member of the Zapata community who was well known to him and regarded as highly credible.

“The testimony of this witness dispels any idea Mrs. Hartley was involved in any wrongdoing regarding the murder of her husband,” he said firmly. “She called in a 911 phone call to our office at around 2:20 p.m. on the day of the incident, immediately after she got to shore, and her statements to my office confirm what the local witness observed.”

Unfortunately, the witness account does not match Tiffany Hartley’s own version of events. At no time has she ever said that she was again chased by the “pirates”, in fact, she claims she left them behind after driving “through” them.

Hartley references recent pirate activity, which is almost verbatim what she says happened to her and David, with the exception of the actual piracy:

On April 30, five people in two different boats were fishing on Falcon Lake and went to the Old Guerrero area, where they were taking photos of the old church. While they were there, a boat with four heavily tattooed men approached the two boats quickly. The men identified themselves as “Federales,” but they were not wearing uniforms. The men boarded the boats, demanded cash and asked “where are the drugs?” The fishermen told the men that they had no drugs and were just fishing and taking photos. They ended up giving the men $200 cash and left the area. The pirates followed the two boats, but the U.S. boats were able to outrun them and the men stopped following once the two boats entered U.S. waters.

In every recorded incident since April, the heavily tattoed pirates posing as “Federales” without uniforms, came upon anchored fishing boats, boarded them, robbed the fisherman at gunpoint of any personal cash, searched for drugs left without any violence. In the Hartley family interview on the Today show, Tiffany states that after David was hit, she circled around, jumped off her jetski, swam over to her husband and because he was “face down in the water” she had to turn him over where she discovered he was shot in the head.

It would seem I am not alone in my quagmire.  Mexican Investigators, who hold jurisdiction have already begun to question Ms. Hartley’s story.

Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney for the Miguel Aleman Province adjoining Falcon Lake on the Mexican side, has questioned whether Tiffany Hartley was involved in foul play.

Early this morning, Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez announced the Mexican Authorities will be searching the area where David Hartley was murdered, and have committed to “not leaving” until they find him. Tiffany Hartley, accompanied by her parents, but without David’s, filed a missing person report at the Mexican Consulate last night as a matter of procedure to “get the ball rolling”.

This is a the transcript of the unidentified witness interview. Seems to me she would have more than a “tiny drop of blood” on her life vest.

For him it was just another day on Falcon Lake. The sky was clear, and there were people out having fun. Then, out of the blue he saw a jetski being chased by a boat. Everything would change for the Good Samaritan when he heard Tiffany Hartley rushing toward him. As she sobbed she told him her husband had been shot.

“She could see the gunshots wounds to his head. His brains were falling and he was not breathing,” he said. The man tried to console her. She told him she and her husband David had gone to old Guerrro on the Mexico side of the lake to take pictures of a Spanish mission.

“Three boats approached them, waving guns talking in Spanish,” he said. “They got scared, spooked then they heard the gunshots going on. She could see they were hitting the water and the water was coming up at them. [A]ll of a sudden she sees her husband flying off.”

Has anyone told this witness that his story does not match hers?

    1. She has never said they were chasing her as she left, in fact, she said she drove toward them.

    2. I saw her say last night she thought he was dead because it had been over a week, and just that he was not conscious when she left him. Not a word about his brains coming out.

(note to self: Is their a statute about administering aid in play here?)

    3. First I heard about him not breathing.

I am going to rip my hair out at the ad lib or subjective reporting going on here.

I am confused about the sequence of their residences. They were still in the process of buying furniture and settling in on the Texas side of the border (her Facebook), but they were also moving back to Loveland in October, as he asked for and got a transfer, because they were tired of the violence along the border?

Posting the following for the relevance to her knowledge of firearms. Also, that she was working in Loveland by 1996. (She hasn’t changed a bit since her 2001 photo on the site.)

P.S. I am a lifetime 4-H supporter, but have somehow missed the “shooting sports.”

From the 2001 CSU Extension Report: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/coop/01anrep09.html

Tiffany Young, 20, former eleven-year Colorado 4-Her, said, “I recommend 4-H for every kid. It taught me leadership, responsibility, communication skills, and how to get along with others…plus I met many long-lasting friends.” She began as a Clover Bud member and later participated in shooting sports, leathercraft, ceramics, cake decorating, dog obedience and junior leader. Young used her networking connections to channel her skills into a unique job at the Loveland, CO., Baskin Robbins store, where she has worked for five years decorating all their ice cream products and interacting with customers. Sherry Baker, former manager for Baskin Robbins, said, “Tiffany was really a life saver the way she just came here with all the experience and talent to do this job. She is a great employee-she’s dependable, has great customer service skills, and is a team player. I wish I’d had a dozen more just like her.”

Well, she went blonde since then.

I presume David had a permit to carry a firearm, I know he recently joined the NRA site.

Apparently she is “gun fluent”, so again, why the vague description on the gun?

Tiffany only wants David’s body back. She has not demanded that the killers be bought to justice.

She hasn’t mentioned justice, seeking the killers of her husband. She only wants David’s body back, so she can go on!

How can anyone “go on” without seeking the killers? The Pirates
who terrorized her and slayed her husband, should be the priority,
    after finding David’s body.

What does she mean go on? Is there someone or something else more important than finding David’s killers?

Rally Friday In Colo. For Man Killed By Pirates

David Hartley Missing On Texas-Mexico Border

    Deb Stanley, 7NEWS Producer

DENVER — Family and friends of David Hartley will hold a rally in Denver Friday to bring awareness to Hartley’s murder.

Hartley, 30, of Loveland, moved to McAllen, Texas, for a job at an oil field service firm. His wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, 29, reported they were jet skiing on the Mexican side of Falcon Reservoir Sept. 30 when they came under fire from suspected pirates.

Young-Hartley said her husband was shot and killed. His body has not been found.

I recommend they ask her how much she has been paid for images and licensing fees to date.

It is also my understanding that the memorial service was paid for as a donation. I have not been able to get anyone on record to confirm that however.

In addition to wanting her husbands body as I recall Tiffany has also mentioned in several interviews she ‘wants the border protection increased’ which seems to be her focus.. I know I’m being cynical & can’t seem to turn the page perhaps I need my coffee..

  11. mjh says:

When interviewed, Tiffany was asked if her husband was possibly still alive, or if she knew he was dead. She responded that he wouldn’t “wake up”, and she kept shaking him, screaming for him to wake up. She also mentioned that she could see a gunshot wound to his forhead.

Ummm…if brain matter was coming out of his head, I’m sure she would realize he was dead, and that would kind of be something you might mention when asked this question.

I have looked into the face of a man dying from a serious head wound. His eyes were wide, fixed, and dilated. This vision will never, ever leave me. It is imprinted in my mind.

In my opinion, if her husband’s head was hit to the point where brain matter was coming out, she WOULD NOT be shaking him and telling him to wake up… and his eyes are what she would remember.

    >>>>>>

    and here’s another version…

the 29-year-old showed little emotion as she implored members of the media to push for improved security along the border. But when asked why she and her husband left Reynosa earlier this year to live north of the border, Young-Hartley denied their safety was a factor in the decision.

“No. Absolutely not,” the housewife responded. Rather, the move was at the demand of his employer, Calfrac Well Services Ltd., an oil field services firm.

  14. lizzy says:

Don’t know why, but her FB posts about furniture shopping in Texas really seem odd/significant to me. It sounded like they’d never furniture shopped together before.

They’d sold at least 2 jointly-owned homes in Colorado in 2007 and 2008. So they’d either slept/ate on the floors, or furnished together before.

And why were they filling a house there if they were planning to move back to Colorado by mid-October?

  20. Dabel says:

Really it should go with out saying…but when a loved one is missing or murdered, typically the family is more than willing and ready to have their name cleared. Remember Mark Klass….he asked for a lie detector right off the bat so he could be eiminated and LE could focus on trying to find who had his daughter.

  21. GriffyMom says:

When the issue of a polygraph comes up I always remember the response by Mark Klaas when his daughter, Polly, was missing. He said ‘sure, absolutely, right now, clear me so we can find my daughter’. Tiffany’s noncommittal “I might but I don’t feel like I should have to” is self-serving. If this is about finding your dead husband and seeking justice for him where is her desire to prove her story.

Her whole story stinks? If pirates were on the lake shooting at me I’d have been screaming and riding that thing in circles in an attempt to elude them and/or catch the eye of someone else on land or water. Her story of complete calm and rational thought is too hard to believe. She rode straight towards armed men who had just shot her husband??? I’m not buying what she’s selling!

  22. myers says:

If you are innocent, then your answer to to the lie detector should be hands down YES! This girl is getting on my nerves. She is to poised and collective. Something is up. Did she ever say that she spoke to someone on the shore?

  23. mjh says:

When I first read this story, the very first thing I thought was –she has a boyfriend, she didn’t want to move. She did away with her husband.

Although, I do think it’s possible that they faked her husband’s death for the insurance money, and will meet back up at some point.
In either case, she is not telling the truth.

The more I see and hear, the more I do not believe her. I just watched the link that nana2 provided, and not only the shift in her eyes when asked the polygraph question, but the fact that she said “I know my story”. I know the story, and I don’t think it’s necessary?? What??

She didn’t say “I know the truth, what I’m telling is the truth, and I will absolutely take a lie detector test”.

Any word on the amount of David’s life insurance policy yet? 401k? Savings account?

Blink I’m so totally with you on the lie detector test stuff – Tiffany said she “might consider” taking a LTD to clear herself? Yeah…..sure. And predictably looking down and to the left. Wonder why people can’t keep themselves from doing that… Also in that same interview I note she stated (paraphrasing all of this stuff) that David’s body is more likely to have been dragged onto land than to have been left in the lake. Again, giving us TMI. How the hell would she have any notion of what the Pirates would do? Why would the Pirates shoot this man and then waste their energy dragging him ashore? Did they think he might have a big fat wallet in his swimsuit? If their motive was robbery, they could have gotten 2 jetskis instead of one but they did not. Again IMOO she’s telling us that David’s body is on dry land and she knows it, because that’s probably where she last saw him, right after she plugged him. Let’s see, somewhere near the historic site they were supposedly looking at, but isolated so – what a coinkydink – no one could see them. OH, oh and I’m just so shocked to learn that she’s familiar with firearms………MOO MOO MOO

  27. myers says:

So, if I am understanding correctly,
She and her husband are heading back to us waters.

    From behind someone begins shooting.

She turns back for her husband.

Is she saying that as they shot at her they passed her up and were then in front of her and that is why she had to then pass them again? So when is it that she is looking at them and the gun is pointed at her. Is she saying that when they took off they headed towards us waters because that would be the only way she would have had to pass near them? Why would they go towards us waters? Nothing adds up.

    **********

His voice is distorted and he remains unnamed because he fears retaliation by the cartels. Tiffany and family also hired private security.

    and @anyone

my opinion is everyone is lying through their teeth. Tiffany can’t get her story straight and is leaving out major portions of this story. I believe some of her story. I believe her husband was shot in the head, by whom, why? I don’t know.

The Sheriff is busy back pedaling trying to cover Tiffany’s story. All this new ‘evidence’ that was found comes directly from the sheriff, and if y’all recall from his previous statements you can see that at first there was no evidence, then he didn’t think to look for evidence, and now suddenly there’s blood evidence. Originally he was ‘angry’ that he couldn’t go search over there, and then when Mexico offered to let him search, he turned them down saying it was too dangerous, and then we have the Witness… who’s original story does not match the newer version thats being spread around by the sheriff.
I don’t think the Sheriff is trying to cover for Tiffany. I think he just wants this all to go away, but I don’t know why.

The sheriff is protecting the witness by not naming him. Could the sheriff be protecting Tiffany too by trying to make this go away?

I don’t know but I smell coverup, and I don’t think we’ll ever know until another LE agency gets involved and actually investigates this.

What I would like to know is ……are there any witnesses to seeing Tiffany’s husband going out on the water with her that day? There is a witness saying that he only saw Tiffany speeding through the water. Tiffany’s has made it very clear and very public that she KNOWS her husband is dead. He was shot in the head, so he must be dead right? She’s going on every media show to let everyone know he is dead. But, is he really? I don’t know, but I get this feeling that he is alive and in Mexico. This was all a plan to get some money, maybe a life insurance policy from his company and the both of them can continue to live their ‘no fear’ wild life style, free like they have been living. Not settling down anywhere, moving around, even living in Mexico a carefree lifestyle. It really appears that Tiffany is putting on an act. She seems to have memorized her storie in such great detail. I’m sorry, but if I was chased by pirates and saw my husband of 8 years killed right in front of me, I would be too devistated to even go out of my house, let alone all over the media circus. Also, go and listen to her 911 call. She doesn’t seem to be terrified at all. She goes ‘heellooo’ the 911 operator in this little girl’s voice, trying to make herself sound sad. In interviews she always has a tissue in her hand and makes sniffle sounds, but you never, ever see a drop, a tear from her eye. She’s not the actress she thought she was, because so many people can see right through her act. Her story, isn’t true and the reason, the Mexican govt cannot find her husband’s jet ski or his body, is because he’s probably in Mexico, alive and well, waiting to be reunited with Tiff in a while (IMCO)

Actually when you look at Tiffany she is the perfect person to present something like this to the world.. She has a tiny physical appearance, a demur voice, without makeup she appears to be much younger than her actual years & when she stands next to any male she is much smaller in stature so they get protective..

@lily – clicked on your posted link and read about he 911 call. Again, major hink.

Good Samaritan (GS) says he was just out on the lake having a nice day and then he saw a jetski being chased by a boat. Okay, how would he know the boat was “chasing” the jetski, especially since she never said to anyone they were chasing her? In fact, she says she raced away from the crime scene until she “couldn’t see them anymore” or something like this. Then, while sobbing to GS, Tiffany over-explains to him that she and her husband David had gone to old Guerro on the Mexico side of the lake to take pictures of a Spanish mission -none of this mattered at that moment of supposed horror, so why say it? Why not be screaming hysterically, “My husband’s been shot!!! Help me!!!! Call the police!!! What would it matter at that moment WHY they were out on the lake and what they were doing out there and how could she be calm enough to explain it? More hink – the GS then paraphrases what Tiffany supposedly said to him, saying “three boats approached them, waving guns talking in Spanish”, yet in her interview Tiffany says they didn’t speak at all. Then the GS says Tiffany told him one pirate held a gun “to her head” but then he left. In her interview later she said the pirate pointed the gun at her from about 10 feet away. Then GS says Tiffany told him that she decided to leave her husband behind because a pirate was charging toward her (after already having a gun to her head and then leaving, now he’s charging toward her again when he has already had ample time to kill her if he wanted). How many different stories are we going to hear? Blink may I roll my eyes now? Hink. MOO.

FOX reports on tv, a state trooper in Texas pulled the couple over 1 1/2 hrs before the alleged shooting on the water. They are searching for dashcam. So if accurate, he was alive at that point.

Pulled for Texas plates on Sea-Doo’s and Mexican plates on trailer.

Zapata County Sheriff Sigi Gonzales said he is certain she is telling the truth.

“Ninety-nine point nine percent sure,” he said.

A reporter with CNN toured the lake with Gonzales and a small army of armed protectors. The lake is vast, and it is empty. Gonzales said he has no reason to doubt Tiffany Hartley’s story.

“I look at it this way. What is to indicate it’s not true?” he said.

There is no jet ski and no body to be found. Gonzales indicated that blood was found on Tiffany’s life vest.

“We’re working to get it analyzed,” he said.

Has Anyone come across a witness saying they saw the Hartley’s eating at subway the afternoon of the 30th?

Also, has anyone come across a link that confirms the last time David spoke to any member of his family?
    ——
The only reference I hear is from video above in the article. At around 8:00 she is giving a convulted answer to Viera’s question why Mexican authorities are skeptical about her story. She says something like, David’s mother new we were there, and its nothing to not call her for a few days.

I know you know the above, B, its just a strange and convulted answer to a straight forward question.

Snipped from article at above link:

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar on Thursday told reporters Mexican authorities were doing everything they could while trying to keep their own crews safe.

“When darkness was falling (Wednesday evening), they got word that there might be an ambush,” Cuellar said. “People that are trying to do their job on the Mexican side are facing a risk, they’re right inside the hornets’ nest … they had to suspend the search.”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, campaigning for re-election in Houston, said such threats were no excuse.

“I don’t think we’re doing enough. When you call off the search the way they did … and give as the reason because the drug cartels are in control of that part of the state, something’s not right,” Perry said. “We do not need to let our border continue to deteriorate from the standpoint of having drug cartels telling whether or not we can go in and bring the body of an American citizen who was killed. That is irresponsible.”

Jesus de la Garza, Tamaulipas state deputy attorney general, said late Thursday that Mexican authorities had increased their efforts under orders from Tamaulipas Gov. Eugenio Hernandez, whose office was contacted by a member of Perry’s staff. Divers also were deployed, de la Garza said.

The lake appeared calm Thursday afternoon. From the border markers in the water, the only sign of activity on the Mexican side was a single helicopter, which appeared to be a Mexican military aircraft, flying overhead.

Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said he has sent word to the Zetas that he wants Hartley’s body returned and has no plans to prosecute.

“We cannot arrest anybody for what happened in Mexico, we cannot prosecute on the state level anybody for what happened in Mexico. We just want a body,” Gonzalez said. “I did send word to the drug cartel, the Zeta cartel in Mexico, I sent word to them unofficially. I can’t tell you how but I sent word to them.”

Gonzalez said he had not received a response as of Thursday afternoon.

Blood smeared on Tiffany Hartley’s life jacket is nearly invisible to the naked eye but is among the evidence that corroborates her description of an attack by Mexican pirates that left her husband dead and ended with her fleeing for miles across open water, their attackers in pursuit.

This is in the Denver Post article. I am sorry but personally I think she would have more than a speck of bld not visable to the naked eye if she was trying to hoist her husband up on a jetski and he had been shot in the head. Bld would be in the water around her, she would be saturated with it. Wouldnt you think? I really hope someone with some authority looks into this. She has changed her “story” so many times. Thats what she calls it too. A story, and I believe that is exactly what it is. I hope they start investigating her soon.

I do not think David is dead. Why? When Anderson Cooper asked Tiffany,
how she wanted David to be remembered, she rattled off his wonderful qualifications as a human being. Tiffany, should have choked-up numerous times, if she was so in love with him and he is dead.

Her eyes were creepy, sliding to her right, when asked about the
LDT. Wow, I thought she would postively be open to it, since she
wishes to prove to the public her innocence.

Wow, David was the Photographer, hymmm…I must be one, too!
    I have a Digital camera:)

HLN said “Video” may be coming in, Tiffany and David, were “pulled over” before, the disappearance at sea.

The Anchor did not go in details. “Pulled over” I assume mean’t on a traffic stop, could be anything. She said “they” so again, I assume
she mean’t the couple together were pulled over.

I am hearing a yet undeveolped story discussing the student killed in Mexico and some unknown American female also on the bus? I doubt it is connected, just an awful lot of stories going on at once.
