Caylee/Casey Anthony Case: Will Plumbing Emergency At The Anthony Home While Caylee Was Missing Produce New Evidence For The State?

When you have a family that both refuses to cooperate with Law Enforcement in a productive way, and in this editor’s opinion, outright obfuscates efforts to investigate the location of a victim and the circumstances to which Caylee Anthony became same,  we are forced to look at what I will term, available objective  data .

Analyzing data in conjunction with the verifiable evidence in this case, allows us, and eventually jurors, to better sift through the ever-changing accounts of those closest to Casey Anthony, without adding metaphorical dryer sheets to cover the smell.
As all www.blinkoncrime readers have known since my earliest coverage of this case, I have long stated it is my belief that the concern for Caylee’s welfare and whereabouts started with the Anthony’s backyard renovations the week of Cindy Anthony’s vacation over the fourth of July.

In fact, one might interpret Cindy Anthony hits her panic button during this time.

I have also written extensively that I believe that the defense team is going to intimate, if not outright accuse, George Anthony of culpability in the death of his own beloved granddaughter.
On Friday afternoon, following the conclusion of the last defense motions presumably prior to trial (insert laugh track) the state released additional video evidence to the defense.   As we brace ourselves to see video of Caylee with her Mother and Tony Lazarro having lunch, should we also prepare to see Cindy and George shopping for those backyard improvement supplies?

Or… Other?

Cindy Anthony’s bank records show 3 separate charges to The Home Depot posted June 30th.  As the purchases were made on Cindy’s check card, we can’t be sure if the purchases are made on June 29, June 30th or a combination of both.

Will we see the purchase of new gas cans, concrete mix, weed barrier, or something else?
Cindy or George Anthony began furiously calling her daughter’s cell phone, in the wee hours of July 1 at 1:43am.
Calls to Casey from the Anthony landline are made to her at 1:43, 1:51, 1:52, 2:02, 6:56, 7:33, and 7:50 AM.

Casey does not answer her cell phone, but she DOES check her voice mail after every one of them, and attempts unsuccessfully to reach someone at the Anthony home at 7:54 AM, possibly due to a busy signal.  This pattern of calls suggests an emergency of some kind, not Cindy checking if Casey was going to finally bring Caylee over as Cindy had requested.  In fact, there is a small break in the action, pun intended, when a different number is dialed from the Anthony home:

In no interview, in no deposition, will you find either Anthony disclosing the obvious plumbing nightmare necessitating 2 calls to Rainaldi Plumbing 4 minutes after their listed hours of operation in the yellow pages, and the subsequent service call resulting in a $283.96 bill.  Ironically, the check number, out of sequence, follows one Casey Anthony wrote on her Mom’s account in December

Spoiler Alert: The only reference to any plumbing emergency appears in one of Cindy’s letters to Casey, but two years after the July 1, 2008 incident.

..” I don’t know if Jeanene told you, about the water pipe we had broke on Friday, we had water from the pipe outside of Caylee’s room, leek into her room, mostly in her play corner- carpet was soaked and walls were damp.  Everything is drying out but the carpet smells bad. (I better watch how I describe it they may take it for discovery). It’s amazing how even clean water can smell rancid after it sits for a while.  Fortunately one of our church friends was able to come out and fix the pipe…”

Facing a capital murder charge, and already convicted of economic felony, it begs the question:

Why would a member of Jose Baez defense team, Jeanene Barrett, need to relay information to Casey about a broken pipe leaking into her deceased child’s room?

If you are thinking this is more “Anthony Code Speak”, you are not alone.  According to a blue print of the Anthony home, there is no plumbing on the outside wall of Caylee’s bedroom that would leak into the corner, the right lower corner or her “play corner” which abuts the outside wall.

As the bulk of “pipe bursts” or “breaks” go in Florida temperatures, in general they occur only through freezing, extreme temperatures, or water pressure stress (build up) of some kind. The source of the emergency plumbing call to Rainaldi on July 1st, 2008 is not known, but what is known, is that it gives new meaning to the signature of Casey’s inmate correspondence “FLUSH”.

What has always bothered me was what could have been found in either the backyard or now as we know, in the plumbing that would send Cindy Anthony into a clear and obvious panic, mobilizing Lee to track down his sister, and attempt to track down Caylee through her friends AFTER speaking with Casey.

George and Cindy Anthony’s versions of June 15th and June 16th 2008 have evolved it seems, after every new release of discovery.  Specifically, George’s account of the last time he saw Caylee and what she was wearing.  They have gone to painstaking lengths to establish that at least Caylee was home the evening of the 15th, and very much alive the morning of the 16th.

So where is the blue “dress” she wore to the Mount Dora Nursing home on Father’s Day, June 15th, 2008? It would seem to me if I wanted to establish an alibis, or timeline, that clothing would be critically important.

Is that what Casey meant when she uttered to Tracy Mclaughlin and Rob Dick that OCSO had no idea what they were doing and they had not even found her clothes yet?  Was she talking about Caylee’s clothes, or Mama’s?

Maybe kc mutilated a photo of Caylee and flushed it?
Maybe a doll with trauma or something around it’s neck?

I’m still a little dense….so the yard project was coincidently already on schedule since the stuff was purchased before the plumbing incident?
Okay, next dumb question…do the words “mostly in her play corner” have significance? If cindy was trying to covertly send a message of importance via jeanne, would it have to do with that area or toys?

If maybe there is a charge for a plumber’s snake at the hardware store, maybe George did fish an object out and somehow damaged the pipes in doing so, then had to call to have the pipe fixed.(Sorry if someone has already said this, my mind is in overdrive). Then the A’s possibly got rid of the item……..but where.

  5. annals says:

I just couldn’t ever believe that any clothes were buried.

Not by Casey; if getting rid of any clothing was necessary, I always thought that she’d just bag them and toss them in a random dumpster, why go to the trouble of burying? Extra physical effort is not Casey’s style. But, Casey FLUSHING, that works for me.

It’s hard for me to believe Cindy or George would have initiated the yard project expressly in order to bury any clothing they may have found. It makes more sense that Cindy would have washed it, in order to keep it for the purpose of getting into Casey’s face with it.

But, then again, the gardener in me calls BS on moving the shrub in July for purely landscaping reasons. You don’t move shrubs in the North in July because the hot summer is no time to severly stress a root system (and that shrub was in FL no less).

Why did they rearrange the landscape, in FL, in July? Wrong timing for all the plants AND both of the landscapers’ health. I’m still mulling it over.

Wow – this is all very new and exciting information blink. With regard to Sindy’s mention of the pipe bursting and the awful smell in Caylee’s room, I went immediately to her trying to float yet another story about the dogs hitting on the backyard (we have heard Bozo during the last hearings go on and on about the “false positives” on feces, blood etc from live people) OR yet another thing that could produce a god awful smell OTHER than a dead body – add it to the rotten pizza, squirrel, Velveeta stories.

Wet carpet can rot, in high air humidity, and begin to smell, if you don’t dry it. But why would she not dry it, or put up a dehumidifier?

Are we sure the water came from the plumbing? Maybe someone tried to clean the carpet by pouring water over it, and explained it as damage from a leak?

I am totally unfamiliar with the case, it just sounds odd to me that someone would not notice a leaking pipe to a point the carpet would begin to smell, or not dry the carpet once the plumbing was fixed.

  16. anotherB says:

Could they be talking about blocked up eaves, and the drain attached to it? The siphon of a sink drain smells when you open it up, and you would hardly call its contents “clean water”. Eaves contain clean water, if you manage to keep the leaves out. They can easily get damaged because they are exposed.

  17. MJ says:

AKMOM~ now your idea is making sense as regards the the yard project timing and the call to the plumber.
i wasn’t understanding how the concrete purchase could fit in with a find from a clogged pipe, but if GA already had pulled something out and damaged the pipe or didn’t quite get it fixed…hmmmm
plus it also gives a reason that a plumber didn’t ring the bell about having yanked out a dress or doll or something.

  18. PA Mom says:

I am married to a plumber/heating man. He’s had plumbing clogs that took 2 weeks to back up. It could be something small and hard that snagged paper in the pipe until it completely clogged and stopped all water flow. If a piece of clothing was lodged in a pipe, it would clog the pipe immediately. If the toilet wasn’t being used the water would recede until it was flushed again. The item causing the clog would remain close to the toilet not moving far enough down into the system to cause the whole house to clog.

The pipe may have been broken by someone unclogging it. This may have been why a plumber was called to repair a broken pipe.

Isn’t most (or all?) store servailence video destroyed after a fairly short period of time? In other words, wouldn’t it be impossible for LE to get summer, 2008 video from Home Depot & Subway in 2011?

But, if LE got that video in 2008, it should have been handed to the defense (and subsequently the press) a long time ago.

Is it possible LE just got those videos this year?

  24. Patricia says:

Great Detective work ! I hope the prosecution ties all this together ! I never could understand why the detectives did not tear up the newly laid concrete they had put down in the backyard when they were investigating the back yard ???? If torn up now it may be too late, the Anthonys may have gotten worried & re-moved the evidence .
Was Caylee’s Momma doll a soft body doll ? I could see Casey trying to flush it down the toilet …
The plumber needs to be questioned & the area under the newly laid concrete needs to be taken up .

  25. A Texas Grandfather says:

Twenty-six bags of cement is enough to make five yards of 3,000 lb. concrete when mixed with sand and gravel. The information in the article about the purchases at Home Depot does not detail the purchase.

What would George know about concrete? Likely not very much. The purchase is probably for twenty-six bags of a premixied sand, gravel and cement. One product like this is called Sakrete. It comes in 60 and 80 lb. bags. The 80 lb. bag is one cubic foot and the 60 lb. bag is .75 of a cubic foot.

It takes 27 of the 80 lb. bags to make a yard of concret (3′ x 3′ x 3′). The 60 lb. bags would make about .7 of a yard.

My bet is that the purchase of concrete was 60 lb. bags as they are much easier for inexperienced people to handle. What happened to the concrete mix? Was it used to pour a slab under the playhouse or under the pool?

If used to pour a slab, I would consider the idea that whatever was recovered from the sewer backup could have been placed in the slab or under it.

Blink, your dedication to finding the truth about what happened to little Caylee is to be commended. Sometimes a new set of eyes on data or information can spot things that are totally missed by those that work it daily.

    TY ATG. Very important point.

This is my first post here. I have been following this sad story from day 1 (really day 31). This article is brilliant. You definatley have “peaked my interest”. For sure something happen at the time. I found the water story that Cindy told, a very odd topic to write to her daughter about. Sumting not right. It also bothers me, and I can’t remember where i read it, but it seems Cindy said she found a stuffed animal in the back yard, one that she didn’t recognize as belonging to Caylee. I find that very odd too.

  31. lizzy says:

    ATG,

Don’t want to have the “battle of the engineers” here, but I’m not sure where you got that 27 of the 60-lb bags make .7 cubic yard. They really only make about .45 cubic feet per 60-lb bag (brand whether Sakrete, Quikrete or another won’t matter for this). So 27 bags would only make 0.45 cubic yard.

The relevance is just that this isn’t much concrete. For example, it would make a slab that was 6 ft x 6 ft x 4 inches.

  32. mayhem says:

Forgive my jumbled thinking…but a few thoughts this morning:

Could it be something that eventually clogged up the bathtub pipes? Something of Caylees or Caseys? I can’t imagine it cause panic, unless you consider that mom and daughter allegedly fought viciously that night. Maybe the item was something that Great Grandpa had given to Caylee and finding it logged stirred up fear that Casey drowned her in the tub? Or Casey lost a braclet she lied about?

  33. claudia says:

    Blink,

Awesome! In the state of Florida houses built in the 1980′s
had copper pipes. I belive most new homes built have the PVC pipes.
However I wanted you to know that with our sandy soil it is very
commom that those with the copper pipping will get a leak. Two ways
to ways to fix a leak here. If the leak is on the outside the plummer will see where the water is coming from and put a small hole into the cinder block and hope they can see it. (most have a leak dector that will beep to avoid having to make a hole.

Now as to why cindy was saying that it did leak into Caylee’s room can only mean that if this did happen as you stated there are no pipes close to her room it could be from the kitchen between the block wall and the dry wall you would be amazed how much damage a small pin hole in a copper pipe can make. So looking at your plan of the house it could be that it leaked from the kitchen between walls right into her room.

Also If the leak is under the slab it would take that plummer to bring in a leak dector and use a jackhammer to open that spot in the
slab to get to the pipe. Most of our pipes are under the slab our homes sit on. Just a few things I know from living here and having a leak in a home build in the 80′s nightmare trying to find it. Now if a leaking pipe can’t be found it would be a plummers nightmare to fix. One would have to have the house replumed, and this would mean turning the water off, and repluming up the sides of the house and through the roof area crazy I know but that is what your homeowners insurance would require if you wanted to file a claim for damage and they don’t pay for the replum!

Something is not right with what Cindy writes to Casey, they did something like Flushed!

Thank you PA Mom for this plumbing perspective; Two items that are non- clothing that could snag on a sewer pipe and cause a backup later come to mind in this case –
#1 Casey’s shamrock lanyard ( kind of large, not my first choice)
#2 Wasn’t there a ring that Casey was proud of and Cindy asked her about that ring during some of the jail visits? Supposing Caylee, being only two and not well supervised somehow flushed Casey’s ring down the toilet. Could that have triggered a rage? Could that account for the flurry of calls on the 16th – casey wanted to know how to get her ring back? When she couldn’t get it back she got so angry with Caylee and it escalated? A ring would be the perfect item to lodge just so and gradually cause a backup.

    - Problem ; why would finding Casey’s ring trigger a panic by Cindy?

  35. claudia says:

One more thing, if there is a water valve on the outside wall of Caylee’s room it could be that the copper pipe fitting that attaches it’s self to the valve on the outside wall could have sprung a leak, and if it was say 2 foot in between the block and dry wall it would infact make the carpet and drywall wet.

  36. Heidi says:

Blink… How late can evidence be turned in prior to trial… When is the cut-off date to submit? Also, will we have access to Dominic Casey’s recent depo prior to trail?

New evidence is subject to ongoing discovery rules regardless of when it is developed, if it is to be used at trial.

I doubt we will have access to Dom Casey’s depo because his depo with the state, as far as we know, is sealed because it was gained via investigative subpoena.

His deposition for the defense lasted under 3 hours. The man worked for Baez, the A’s and Casey and his deposition was 3 hours. I guarantee you that all he was asked, in summary, was what the state asked him, lol.

His testimony, by far, is one that I am most interested in.

  37. Sue says:

Blink – Fantastic article. I can’t say for sure what caused the Anthony’s to panic that day, or what caused their actions afterwards, but from my 30,000 ft. view, I would say that it is something which the A’s had hoped would be ‘overlooked’ and not brought out – ever! It may very well be the one detail which could make this a conviction of Murder 1 for their daughter Casey, and felony tampering with evidence and obstruction charges (piled high) for them. JMO

I know this will not be a popular opinion, but I really doubt the Anthony’s will end up being charged with anything, outside of any activities that would outright hinder a successful prosecution of their daughter.

I think the general consensus is that LE does not want to come off as “persecuting” this family to facilitate a plea. Karma will take care of their actions, I have no doubt about that.

  38. janetoo says:

Ok, I just have to say this, Cindy has been very determined to lead everyone to the fact that somebody, anyone but any of their family was involved in the murder of Caylee. So she’s trying to throw people off with the odd letter of the plumbing, Caylee’s room carpet, etc. Why in the world then did she say to 911 “it smells like dead body was in the car”? I think I’m losing the ability to keep dates and weird instances with this family clear. Maybe they came home on the first of July and saw Casey had dug a fire pit and remains of caylees clothes or the babies were burned, so many maybe’s, one thing is very clear to me though, Caylee was in a tragic scenario and with the people that should have protected and loved her, for this they are all guilty of her murder.

    Great write up!

    Thoughts……..

Does the side of the house where Caylee’s room and kitchen are have a plumbing cleanout valve? This connection would be in the area between the house and property line and has a screw off cover. The blue dress could have been placed easily in there. Waste water would flow slowly through a cotton dress but human waste would cause a backup into the kitchen and bathroom on that side of the house. Was the blue dress used to administer the chloroform? Were other things found in this pipe that directly related to Casey or Caylee that made Cindy panic?

Pouring a concrete pad is permanent. Whatever they were trying to conceal the did not want anyone to find, ever. Another body, perhaps?

To A Texas Grandfather and lizzy …and of course, Blink….

While I am still struggling to understand the plumping issue, the 26 bags of cement are still blowing my mind ,,,

Could the cement (however much it ended up being in actual yardage) been used to “replace” pavers under the playhouse that may have been stained with decomp fluid??? Could the stain on the pavers be what blew Cindy’s mind???

Could Cindy have told George to throw the stained pavers away …and he just happened to pick the “local” dumping ground…in eerie premonition of being used as “the marker” that Dominick Casey was told to locate “the remains”???

I put nothing past this family, and I am convinced that everything that $indy has done – except for that third 911 call – has been to try to “fix” everything to ensure that her mental “myth” of the perfect family was preserved.

No mater how lazy Casey is …she still had the intelligence and the ingenuity to actually be able to “forge” a bank dsposit slip ….

Casey was always passing $indy in the fast lane ….and the ONLY time that $indy successfully pulled the trump card on Casey was the quote that has been heard round the world: “smells like there’s been a dead body in the damn car.”

I have no doubt that Casey still feels that her being in jail charged with the death penalty is still ALL $indy’s fault.

  44. artgal says:

If there was damage to carpet and the pipes – then wouldnt the Anthonys have filed an insurance claim?

I honestly do not know if at the time they could have, I think there may have been some sort of foreclosure situation.

Also would have needed to exceed their deductable, and I did not get from that message that they replaced anything…

However, I do recall George being quoted somewhere about renovations?

    B

  45. Wildflower says:

JMO-Please bear with me as I am just guessing, here-but what if KC poured the remainder of the chloroform down the kitchen drain? It is so toxic that it melted the plastic pipes under the sink that lead to the main sewage line out of the house.
Looking at the amount of the plumbing bill was not for a major work, possibly covering the service call fee and small replacement part/drain unclogging.
Second thought is I always thought it was so odd that Caylee was found without shoes and suspected that maybe that Cindy found them smelling like decomp in the yard near the playhouse or floating in the pool?
That type of find would be enough to cause her to go into a panic.

  46. TandT says:

Ok, I recall earlier it was discussed that the Post missing Caylee (mama) doll was maybe not the same as the pre-missing Caylee (mama)doll. Did this ever get a definitive answer. Sorry I have not kept up on every detail, but I do recall a discussion about this earlier. Just wondering if it was cleared up or not.

There are 2 Mama dolls, one with blinking eyes and one with eyes open, I am not sure anyone is sure what the relevance is yet.
    B

  47. Wildflower says:

    One more thought…lol
Not sure if this is true BUT-Wasn’t there a drywall repair that George did to the wall in the garage?
WHY would that be necessary for him to do? Very questionable and suspicious if he did that cover-up.

  48. Sue says:

I have said a few times that one has to have a ‘thick skin’ in order to survive being in the business of Law Enforcement. In my case it is Corrections. Far too many lenient sentences or none at all when it comes to violent crime against innocents. I have seen court action against defendants who have committed non-violent crimes such as: witness tampering, evidence tampering, obstruction charges, and perjury charges and they have been successfully prosecuted in a court of law. Some go on to serve prison time for it. Here we have a case where two grandparents can most likely be charged with all of the above but we have to be careful not to let blood-lust take over. Yes, we want justice for little Caylee, and we want the satisfaction of seeing it now after all these months (years) of seeing the actions of the immediate family and their lack of ‘doing the right thing’ for Caylee. Blink, you are right about karma. What we put out – does come back. If prosecution for the Anthony’s is meant to be, then it will be. If not, we have no control over it and we must let it go. The kind of justice we want to see for Caylee in regards to her mother may not be exactly what we want it to be either – after the trial, but we have to be put our trust in the very talented prosecution team and a fair and impartial judge to allow both sides to present their case. I do believe we have this without a shadow of doubt.

I believe there is such a gene as a ‘justice gene’ or ‘justice consciousness’. It gives us passion to want to see good win out over evil in the grand scheme of things. That is what this case represents on so many levels. This is what most of us who contribute our thoughts and opinions here have. For me – it does my heart good to see sooooo many who do walk on the side of justice. I see far too many who people who don’t.

It may appear at times during the trial that the defense is successfully presenting its case. Do not let that throw you off balance. When it is all put together and presented by the prosecution, it will make more sense to the jurors than what the defense presents. We all know this. We need to keep the faith.

“I think the general consensus is that LE does not want to come off as “persecuting” this family to facilitate a plea. Karma will take care of their actions, I have no doubt about that.”

You got that right Blink. They’ve done themselves in with all their lies & BS. I bet they’ll be real surprised at some of the FACTS that come out during the trial, things about Casey even they don’t know about yet. Remember people – we still haven’t seen or heard all of the states evidence – and we won’t until trial. Maybe it’ll be the smack back to reality that Cindy & George both need. (if that’s possible) The whole family disgusts me.

Hang on Caylee – Justice is coming – Blink is making sure of it!!!

Blink, love the new info you exposed! It’s very interesting and cause for much speculation.

Ok, I am going to throw out a theory, mine is a litte wild though.
Maybe the bathtub drain was backed up. George was trying to clean it out and found baby teeth mixed in with the usual hair clogs. This caused them to freak out, hence the phone calls trying to get a hold of Casey late night. Then either the drain is still clogged or they are concerned if there is more teeth down there so they call the plumber to clean it out. Or maybe the ring was found too.
Now I can’t remember if they found all of Caylee’s teeth in the woods but I just remember Cindy brought up the amount of teeth thing and I also remember she brought up that Tiffany ring.
I believe she drowned her in the bathtub, I won’t go into why, too long.
