Susan Powell Husband Josh Powell Murders Kids Commits Suicide During Supervised Visitation

Joshua Powell, husband of missing and presumed deceased Utah woman Susan Powell,  deliberately triggered an explosion Sunday afternoon killing himself and the couples two young sons Charles and Braden Powell.

A case worker arrived with the children for the court ordered supervised visitation was blocked entry by Powell, and shortly thereafter the home exploded.

Josh’s Father Steven is awaiting trial for various perv charges and all over creepiness, and Josh was just denied custody of the children in favor of them staying with Susan’s parents,  The Cox’s.

www.blinkoncrime.com wishes to extend our sincere condolences to The Cox and members of the Powell Family who are not perverted freaks or murderers.

It would seem I recall expressing my concern this was a definite concern early on.  I wish to commend all that recognized this and did everything in their power to give these beautiful little cherubs their best chance.

These little guys see their Mother today, and I pray that there is comfort in that reality for those dealing with this loss today.

Just for the heck of it I looked up utilities. It has many meaning. One was usefullness. POS was a computer programer he sent an email to his boss telling him Goodby. The Boss called 911 to report it. There is such a thing as a utility program in that line of work. Was the useful program he was running his children. Was he telling his sister he was shutiing off their usefullness?

Did he say in the email to have her shut off the utilies or did he say shut off the utilities there no longer useful.

Why was she so hysterical. What did she know. I once had a suicide call and immediately went into action mode. Got in my car called the Police everything to prevent a tragedy.

Haven’t been here for a while forgot my old name. Think it was new or something like that.

Comforter with bloodstain taken from Powell storage being tested

    Snipped:
Puyallup, Wash. • A search warrant report released Friday reveals West Valley City Police are testing a small bloodstain on a comforter found last week at Josh Powell’s storage unit.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ed Troyer said West Valley City is testing the comforter as part of its investigation into the 2009 disappearance of Powell’s wife, Susan Powell. Troyer said the stain “was not a large amount” of blood.

    Snipped:
They include garbage bags, one full of toys and another containing children’s clothes and linens; a box with blocks in it; a blue-top plastic bin containing miscellaneous items; framed photos; and a gray, blue and pink comforter, according to the report.

    Snipped:
The report says the comforter is the only item retained by authorities; the other items were given to Susan Powell’s family.

@Titch. I agree with you, folks here can disagree most amiably.
If a caseworker has a paid professional position, she doesnt have to have experienced dysfunction. just do that job our taxes pay for. Imo she failed the most basic tenets of professional child protective caseworker both in the totality of her behavior, and the individual step by step execution. None of it was professional. Nor was she physically suited. Some cpsd clients in need of supervision just got our muscular young male. In my opinion both cpsd & this supervision contractor have to be sued as agencies (not the individuals carrying out agency directives) for negligance to reform their internal policies & practices.

@New one- She said in either her 911 call OR in an interview that she actually had some emails earlier in the morning.

@Blink- Yeah right…ya know? Skeeved isn’t even the word for it. After the incestuous computerized photos uncovered from Josh’s computer came to light, I’d only hope & pray that Josh’s adult siblings face reality & seek help. My gosh.

To those that may not be aware, one way that people interested in child porn think they can escape the law is by using computer animation programs to depict what their interest is in instead of a “real” video or polaroid. It’s disgusting & ridiculous the extremes they’ll go to. The fact that this crap was on Josh’s computer and that stupid ass judge allowed him visitation behooves me. He shouldn’t have had any visitation, not even supervised that scumbag bastard.

@Rose- Thank you for that :) Also, wanted to say when I was talking about experiencing dysfunction, I was also referring to learning about it. Not everyone be be born into dysfunction but it’s definitely something a good social worker will be trained on and most of the time fluent in. When I mentioned experience, it wasn’t just for dysfunction but rather experience in the field covering dysfunctional cases. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to take it so deep and hope I didn’t offend. This case really hits home with me and I’m shaken to my core with what those boys experienced.

I agree, I just don’t think she was properly trained for this position. I think Josh was able to predict his “action” time based on past visits with his children with her as the caseworker. I’m so mad at everyone in the “know” that failed to protect these boys, starting with the dang judge & DSHS that had to have known something was amiss but still allowed visitation to take place. It makes me sick. What are they supposed to do now…say sorry? Sorry but that’s just not enough.

  11. Titch says:

@Rose- also agree about the suit, most definitely.

  12. sammi says:

Those singing her praises hiding the truth of her limitations are doing her no favors imo. It isn’t to ‘blame’ the murders on her!

She isn’t even a licensed SW on WA database. Does she have any degree at all? Or are they sending out foster mom’s for this serious kind of work?

The truth might prevent another child from harm if she can finally see and fix her errors in the fture and accept her own limitations. That is the best we can do, evaluate and learn. As Blink said, she is WAY over her head.

She is no where near qualified for this work. I can feel forgiveness, even pity for her. I honestly believe she doesn’t even see how martying she is! A big heart does not qualify her for the job this serious. She’d probably make a wonderful foster mom. But her job wasn’t to be a ‘grandma’ and God help her, she is BLIND to that important fact. She will put other children in harm’s way with that false ego.

She was NOT their grandma! She failed these boys. That isn’t blaming her, but an observation of ONE part in a many part failed system. She falsely hangs on the excuse she made no mistakes. Why can’t people accept their own weakness and learn? I pray for her blindness to be lifted before her false ego and lack of knowledge puts another child in grave or fatal danger.

This was not about her but you sure can’t tell that from her statements. This was suppose to be about the safety of two little boys. OMG, he didn’t “look like a monster”. How naive! Even for foster care qualitifactions she should know there is no such thing as the boogie man with horns and a siren. Does she live in a cave? Missed Ted Bundy? Scott Peterson? Other not so ugly physical ‘looks’.

I agree with riverpearl, this dingbat took Josh as her buddy. She might be a sweet dingbat, but a dingbat all the same. She had absolutely no knowledge or skills to have professional boundaries up to be able to perform any safety of those boys. She was playing happy family grandma! Right down to ringing the doorbell, with some dingbt Joshie let me in when she smelled gas excusing his actions as a ‘mistake’.

    sammi-

respectfully, I think you are way overboard in this post when there is so much unknown information-

You are making many assumptions about background, education and training that you cannot prove or source.

I am not making you wrong, I am saying such harshness MAY be inaccurrte, and is definitely premature and subjective.

You have to consider this woman was a dedicated professional put in a position of failure because she admittedly was unprepared for such an outcome.

Imo, she was remiss for allowing the children in the home prior to herself, for not escalating a review of the current schedule based on the recent court ruling- a simple “is there now an elevated level of concern not there before based on new information”. However, that was really for the court to intervene imo, when they had the opportunity as I believe only one person from CPS was privy to it.

That said, there is no doubt in my mind that had she been first in the home, she would be dead as well.

The failures are plenty, I do not think her “remissness” would have changed the outcome. The boys were attacked immediately- they were sitting ducks God rest their little souls.

I may do a case analysis piece when everything is in, but there will be plenty of “coulda, shoulda, woulda” to go around.

No.7 – Why can one escape the law by using computer animation programs to depict their sick interests in child porn??? Why are our laws so lax, for lack of a better term? I understand that this type of animation is extremely popular and realistic, and those who use it feel “safe” as they cannot be prosecuted because the USA has no law against it, but other countries do have laws against it. I was told by an authority that you may be able go after someone for it, but it’s unlikely to get the person prosecuted as there are too many bigger fish to fry. It’s about time we stand up and protect our children and shutdown this underground industry in the United States.

re: walk in their shoes- Here is where I have a problem with that logic in this case with those that are suppose to be professionals, PAID to do a job.

If you start to bleed to death in surgery, is it understandable for a doctor to panic and not know what immediate action to take? If the patient dies, is is okay because he felt he was a ‘grandpa’ to you? If you tell a trained dispatcher, my house is on fire! Do you expect the dispatcher to panic and not know what to do immediately?
If YOUR little kids were in the house and you smelled gasoline, the door was locked, even without a potential murderer in there, would you delay calling 911? If next week, month this unqualified worker loses another child, will you feel the same?

    Important point, Riverpearl.
If the children were allowed to run ahead, consider her like a Grandma, “”climb all over” her “like a piece of furniture” Griffin-Hall is not a professional worker.

Is this just our loosey-goosey Northwestern states cultural approach? Can we train employees to act more professionally?

1.) You are always prompt and you enter your arrival time in your documents–either manual or electronic.
2.)You always carry your facesheet, with notepad in your professional binder (or portfolio (leather, black, business card holder, writing pad, pen loop)
3.) You have a working cell phone. In areas of limited service, you use satellite communication. If this is not possible, the visit is held where communication is available.
4.) You, the caseworker, are in charge of the visit from beginning to end. You will be wearing your automatic Crap Detector, as usual.
5.) A working relationship is not a personal relationship. You can have feelings and care about your clients, but you must remain professionally distant.
6.)Your clients have *supervised* visitation because there is a fear that something could happen to their children.
7.) Can this be anymore clear? Capisce?

Also, Jennifer provided excerpts from emails she had “never before provided” from Susan. Susan was afraid Josh would kidnap the boys or worse.

“Here, for the first time, what police have pieced together”
    (about Saturday)

Saturday morning deposit toys in charity drop box near house.

11:32 Walked into a Bank of America and withdrew $7,000 and transferred thousands more police believe to a sister who was still close to him”

1:30 arrived at storage unit. Here police say he spent an hour and a half through Susan’s belongings.

Then back in his minivan, drove 10 out of town to landfill where he dump a bunch of material from the storage unit.

Saturday evening, walked into FredMeyer dept store. Purchased to gas cans and a pack of STERNO

Then went to a gas station to fill those cans.

( I doubt that comforter is going to be anything incriminating he left behind considering he spent 1 1/2 hrs at the storage unit followed by a trip to the landfill)

You can bet Ms. Powell has a shadow these days. I will make the assumption those funds have been seized pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Josh is no dummy, I doubt very much he put anything in a landfill ( can one even access that on a Sat night?)

I would be mapping construction and other dumpsters, specifically the Fred Meyer, gas station and storage unit. If he had a GPS plant on the vehicle, or app on his phone, I am sure he knew it would be accessible after he was gone.

If he was willing to chop his babies with a hatchet and blow them up- does it bother anyone else why he would give a rats ass about hiding any culpability in Susan’s death? The easy answer that he wanted to martyr himself and the children is ludicrous.

I am severely interested in Alina’s activities and exchanges with Josh Powell leading up to, and the day of the murders. How did he know her account number? Interesting she has left that information out of every interview I have seen.

I have a very bad feeling about this angle as you know.

We also knew she “called her supervisor”.

Taking a snippet from your post it appears when she says “she alerted 911 – it was the Family Resource Network 911 Response Team” & she made @ least 2 calls to them that we know now.

“She picked up her phone from her car and alerted 911, but the woman who spoke to her from the other end asked Griffin-Hall whether it was a true emergency.” – 1st phone call to FRN 911RT. [We know the local 911 operator she spoke to is/was a male]

“She then called up a higher official in the 911 response team but it was already too late. “I said to (her boss) Lyn, something terrible is happening here, and I was on the phone with Lyn when the house exploded,” she said. – 2nd phone call to FRN 911RT.

We know she made 2 calls to local 911.

He then went on to say that reunification in theory is a great goal, but we must recognize that it cannot be expected in 100% of the cases, and we need to start accepting this reality and identifying the cases where this is not in the best interest of the children. How astute. I agree. (Sorry for the paraphrasing).

Roach requests Utah police warning to DSHS in Powell case

OLYMPIA Under public disclosure laws Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, today formally requested information sent by Utah police to alert DSHS in the placement of the children of Susan and Joshua Powell.

The letter to Department of Social and Health Services Secretary Robin Arnold-Williams asked for the records at her earliest convenience.

The West Valley City, Utah, police department, in a press release dated February 1, 2012 indicated they had sent a warning to Washington regarding the placement of Charles and Braden Powell.

“It appears DSHS was forewarned about information regarding Joshua Powell and the treatment of his boys,” said Roach.

“DSHS needs to come clean with what they knew. Having information pertinent to the welfare of the Powell children, and not acting on it, may have actually contributed to their deaths,” said Roach.

Recent news reports from Utah indicate the investigation into Susan Cox Powell’s disappearance in 2009 has been conducted as a homicide investigation for at least six months. During that investigation correlated information unrelated to the death of Susan Powell, but concerning Joshua Powell and the children was discovered.

Utah Police Tried To Warn Washington Officials

On a hunch I called the police jurisdiction in Utah that has been investigating the disappearance of Susan Powell. I asked if they had communicated information about Joshua Powell to our children’s services and they said that in fact they had. They were worried about the well being of the two young sons. The release is dated Feb. 1, 2012, the date of the placement hearing.

What I thought was so interesting is that it wasn’t enough to send WA State the information, but that the Utah police felt they needed to send out a press release about having done so. It is almost like they felt they had to let the public know….so the public could demand attention that the police in Utah felt would not be accomplished in WA State. For some reason, West Valley City, Utah police wanted attention to the fact they had sent information….like they were worried it would not make a hill of beans difference to the authorities on Washington…. Yeah.

In the mean time it is day two and I still do not have a copy of the information sent.

Emails show that Powell was actively working in the days around when Susan Powell disappeared on Dec. 6, 2009. He responded to emails the next morning, even drawing praise from a manager for pointing out an oversight related to holiday cards.

A school district contact that he was scheduled to meet with that week said she never had any problems with Steve Powell and never realized he was Josh Powell’s father until seeing him later on television.

“He was always professional and did what he was supposed to do,” Susan Garthwaite said.

Wow what a great new thought. The meaning of utilities. A clue to someone to shut down computer info. This would make so much more sense than water and electric.

I have to believe Josh’s computer activity, online and other was being monitored by LE via sealed subpoena. That is not to say that Josh did not get smart after the search warrant, but clearly those seizures would have absolutely granted surreptitious monitoring.

I have a concern that it is relative to Susan’s location, I go back to the generator he took with.
We recall he rented the vehicle the next day, and I have been wondering if he did not use the generator as a power source for a freezer, return the next day, and enlist his Fathers help.

Here is my first piece on the case:

Have not heard a peep on this from this man, Michael C Powell, apparently juvenile problems was of great interest to him.

Sammi~ You can’t possibly be prepared for EVERYTHING that may happen in your lifetime. I’m not defending the women I’m just saying that it could have been me. Another perfect example is when my special needs son stopped breathing. I was able to hit the floor and give him CPR but my father forgot how to dial 911. As ridiculous as it sounds- it happens. We are all only human.

  36. Classygal99 says:

I also agree with Blink…….. this situation was going to occur regardless of what she did. She could not have protected them. You have to ask yourself if – by what she did or didn’t do- did it make the situation any worse? In my opinion- NO! Had she done things differently that day she would have been a victim as well. Just saying….

Who received the email asking them to shut off the utilities. Was it Alina I wonder?
Funny Blink when I go to this site and then click on his website I get a page about downloading games. His name does appear at the bottom of the download page. I am confused.

@Blink- When Josh left with the boys the night Susan disappeared, he could have told the boys anything, he could have said they were one place but really they were at another. At their ages, they’d know no difference. They could have been at a dump or landfill but the boys could have thought they were in a desert or campground. He said they were looking for crystals but anywhere that it was fairly dark with icicles would look like a cave or something.

I wonder if, just if okay, it’s possible that maybe the belligerent asshole that way in that teet bar in SLC was in fact Josh. If the guy really was Josh, estimate the amount of miles that could have been driven from his house then back, divide it in half, then highlight a circular area using that half number for the perimeter & inside for search purposes. Probably a waste of time but maybe worth the effort if anything just to do something new & creative, to move forward with something, anything.

The mileage on the van and the rental information is available, iirc Titch, it formed the basis for my first piece potential location. I think the Ely Nevada was an absolute prank that the Powell’s knew they were being monitored and LE fell for it.

    **end quote**

I clicked on the link to your earlier article you provided above, and i watched the video of Josh getting interviewed by the reporter, and something he said really stuck out to me. It could be nothing, but for some reason, it really resonated. The reporter asked him how he was doing, and he said “Im just trying to figure out what i can do so that i dont sit idle.” We KNOW he wasnt referring to worrying about Susan, because the neighbor who reported her missing said Josh was alarmingly detached and unconcerned about her whereabouts. When he said “not sit idle,” was he actually referring to the car/generator/gas/heat source running out while he had tried to dispose of Susan’s body? Did he then enlist his father’s help to “figure out what he can do” to fix that problem? Like i said, i could be totally off base, but that comment really struck me for some reason.

With regard to the visit supervisor, and the 911 dispatcher… I think even if everyone involved had reacted/responded perfectly, the body count would only be higher. If she had broken in somehow to try and get the boys, she wouldve been incinerated. If the cops had arrived in 20 secondz rather than 20 minutes, they wouldve all been toast. He NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN GRANTED VISITATION, period.

Interesting, I had not thought of that Eggtree.

Agreed on the rest. Clearly the courts finding, based on the contributions from the criminal matter, changed things in a big way. That should have been the basis for changing the visitation, and I would like to hear from the children’s GAL, personally.

Thanks Blink. I thought I remembered them releasing the mileage as an estimate of 300+ miles. So I was wondering if it was closer to 400 or even over. Ut police released 300 to throw Josh off. No idea, only guessing really. Grasping here, omg.

Titch, mon frier, only any links to Mr. Powell that are relative to the instant matter, please.

I only mentioned his association because he is a relative, his platform is of interest given same, and the lack of any comments publicly.

The more we are learning; the more disturbing picture we have. I believe Alina’s words about the emotional and physical pain that the children had experienced is her projecting what she knows from her past. Josh’s children were not experiencing physical pain, so her statement, being out of place is likely about the abuse of Josh as a young child. Seeing the divorce documents of the parents provides a glimpse into a horific background. It surely makes me wonder why Josh’s mother had so many children by this sick man.

Capisce?

It is ‘strange’ how ‘effortless’ people say “did what they were supposed to do/did my job”.

IF that were true, Charlie & Braden would be alive.

Be it from the top down/bottom up, collectively, “what they were suppose to do” was KEEP Charlie & Braden SAFE & ALIVE.

I watched Dateline and 20/20 tonight. I have heard anyone and everyone say there was no stopping Powell. I heard an interview with Chris Cuomo, who filmed in Puyallup, on KOMO radio while I was driving today. He said in essence that everyone he has talked with said that they did what they were supposed to do. If that is true, he surmised, then what they were supposed to do isn’t enough. I agree.

POS sister Alina said on her 911 call she got several emails. One twenty minutes ago? What did she do for that twenty minutes. If anyone could have stopped this tragedy it was Sister Alina.
If she knew POS had vist with children on Sunday and he was speaking of ending his life why didn’t she call someone sooner.

In a werid way perhaps POS was asking her to stop him. She knew he was serious and something terrible was happening. Why didn’t she act?
    —————-
I had all of those thoughts as well.
It seemed she could have been calling 911 and driving over there and she would have had time to spare well before the caseworker and the babies. Why didn’t she?

I intend to be very thorough in my coverage of Ms. Powell’s interactions with her brother leading up to and including the day of the murders. Yes, I am repeating myself.
