Morgan Harrington Murder: FBI, Metallica and Virginia State Police Ask You To Help Them Find Her Killer

Morgan Harrington disappeared from the John Paul Jones arena on October 17, 2009.  Morgan’s remains were located and recovered the morning of January 26, 2010 on the Anchorage Farm in Charlottesville, VA.

Reported exclusively on www.blinkoncrime.com,  Morgan’s alleged attacker was tied via DNA to a sexual assault in Fairfax, VA in September 2005.

With the help of a multi media campaign,  the FBI, Virginia State Police and Fairfax Police are asking for the publics help to catch her killer.

FBI Press Release:

Authorities Launch Multimedia Campaign in Morgan Harrington Murder Case
Murder Suspect Linked by DNA to Sexual Assault in Fairfax City, Virginia

FBI Washington June 13, 2012
  • Public Information Office (202) 278-3519

Today, federal, state, and local law enforcement launched a multimedia campaign that includes two enhanced composite sketches of a suspect in the 2009 murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. The unknown murder suspect is also connected by DNA to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City, Virginia.

Authorities recently enhanced the composite sketch created in 2005 from a description by the sexual assault victim. One of the composites shows the suspect with facial hair, as the suspect was described at the time of the attack. The second composite sketch features him without facial hair.

The two attacks were connected through DNA after a forensic profile was submitted by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science to the FBI’s national DNA database. The search found that the suspect in the Harrington murder investigation matched the DNA profile of the attacker in Fairfax City.

The multimedia campaign includes a public service announcement by Metallica lead guitarist James Hetfield appealing to the public to come forward with information concerning the Morgan Harrington investigation. The composite sketches of the suspect are being featured on bus shelters in Washington, D.C., as well as on digital billboards in Richmond, Virginia; Roanoke, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and in 23 other states along the East Coast. Social media outreach and alerts via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, along with a website dedicated to the Harrington case were also launched Wednesday. Podcasts are now available on iTunes, and radio spots are airing to further raise awareness of the ongoing investigation. The multi-pronged effort is designed to develop new leads and renew the public’s attention in the attacks. The campaign implements techniques similar to those that have led to the arrests of the East Coast Rapist as well as Ten Most Wanted fugitive James “Whitey” Bulger.

The Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Morgan Harrington’s murder. In addition, the band Metallica is adding $50,000 to the reward, for a total of $150,000.

Morgan Harrington Murder

On the evening of Saturday, October 17, 2009, Harrington attended a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia (UVA) campus in Charlottesville, Va. At approximately 8:30 p.m., she left the arena and was unable to re-enter the facility. She was last seen hitchhiking for a ride from passing traffic.

Harrington was dressed that night in a black T-shirt with the word “Pantera” spelled out in tan letters and was wearing a distinctive Swarovski crystal necklace made of large crystal chain links, which investigators have yet to recover. Harrington’s “Pantera” T-shirt was found on November 11, 2009, in front of a row of apartments along 15th Street, NW near Grady Avenue in Charlottesville. Harrington’s skeletal remains were later discovered on January 26, 2010, in a remote field on an Albemarle County, Virginia farm along Route 29. A camera that Harrington had in her possession that night has never been recovered.

Sexual Assault in Fairfax City, Virginia

On the evening of Saturday, September 24, 2005, a 26-year-old victim was walking home from the Giant Food Store located on the 3700 block of Jermantown Road in Fairfax City, Virginia. The suspect grabbed the victim from behind as she walked down Rock Garden Drive toward her residence. He then carried the victim to a grassy area behind a maintenance shed, where he sexually assaulted her. The suspect was last seen running from the area.

The suspect is described as an African-American male with black hair and facial hair at the time of the attack. He is approximately 6’0” tall and was believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35 years old at the time of the attack.

The public is asked to review this information and consider whether they know someone who generally fits this description, who lived or had ties to the area around the times of the assaults, or who may have been known to spend considerable amounts of time in those areas.

People who know the suspect may not believe that he is capable of committing these crimes. He may not necessarily have a violent criminal history. Because investigators are in possession of DNA evidence that can either positively link the suspect to his crimes or exclude innocent parties, citizens should not hesitate to provide information, even if it is just the name of a potential suspect.

The following agencies are cooperating in the investigation of these crimes: the Virginia State Police, City of Fairfax Police, University of Virginia Police, Charlottesville Police, Albemarle County Police, Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Virginia Tech Police Department, George Mason Police Department, and the FBI.

Law enforcement agencies are asking anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Virginia State Police Tip line at 434-352-3467.

There has been alot of talk in the press over the past couple of years regarding the number of untested rape kits across the country. Many states made and are still making it a priority to secure more funding etc in efforts to reduce the backlog. Which is a good thing. But lets face it- there is no telling how many rape kits are still waiting to be tested across the country.
All of that hooplah was directed towards the crime labs who actually have possession of the evidence.
I just saw this: 200 untested rape kits were found in a closet at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The police never came and picked them up. One kit has been there for twelve years.
    http://littlerock.todaysthv.com/news/news/190183-thv-extra-potential-evidence-locked-away-hospital-storage-years

I bring this up because – I would be shocked if Sketch had not attacked or murdered someone else since Oct 2009.
    Either:
    – he is dead
    – in jail (which I think he’d have to submit dna for so nevermind)
    - severely handicapped / physically unable to attack again.
    - has been wearing protection
    - his recent victim(s) have not reported the attack
    or
    - the police department failed to pick up the rape kit from the hospital.

I would not be shocked if the FFX victim was not his first.

In the article linked above…the hospital spokesperson said that other hospitals around the country have been experiencing similar cases. I know that this one was a “children’s hospital” so many of the rape kits were probably done unrequested by the patient (too young) but what is it to say that if Susie Sunshine got attacked in Nov 2011, had a rape kit performed – but police just never came and got it? Well I guess the wouldnt come get it- but they would need to be in charge of making sure it was transported to the crime lab.

I would be very interested to know if any of the hospitals around FFX and Cville have a backlog of rape kits sitting in their storage rooms.

Not sure when this article was published but it is very indicative of the massive problem we are facing.

clarification- “Children’s Hospital said there are other hospitals around the country experiencing the same problems but hopes better communication will relieve their current backlog for good.”

and I have no idea how the evidence is transported to the lab from the hospital. But its the police dept’s responsibility to make sure they are tested.

  3. alexandra says:

I am concerned that because there is so much crime in our dear country, they just don’t have the resources to catch and lock them all up. These bad guys only get caught when it jumps out at LE and is obvious. It is a very troubling situation with these forgotten rape kits. THEN the stature of limitations renders the law impotent? The USA is the best country in the world. We are better than this. It makes me very worried.

This has nothing to do with Morgan, yet everything to do with Morgan. A confessed and convicted sexual batterer gets to remain on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. Who is he going to assault next? This is outrageous. The message it sends to boys is, go ahead and sexually assault a girl because you will get a slap on the wrist. It tells hers not to speak up when they are sexually assaulted because nothing will happen.

I wonder how many times Sketch sexually assaulted someone and got a little slap on the wrist before he started MURDERING them after the sexual assault.

Not gonna lie- I find that jurisdiction extremely liberal on sex offenses in general- however, this Judge had no choice- she looked for an out, they need to revise the bi-law or statute to adopt moral clause exception or similar language. It needs to be plain. Constituents also need to get involved, not just the board. I would be willing to bet if at the meetings there were to be peaceful and lawful demonstration asking for his resignation they might get it. Do the terms of his probation or parole interfere with his duties?

  5. Olivia says:

Constituents did get involved in this Dumler case–very much so. The guy is determined to stay in public office.

There’s another local who is running for city council in C’ville who has three stalking and/or assault charges that were dropped between 2000 and late 2007. I am concerned about him, mainly because he bears a resemblance around the eyes, nose, and hairline to sketch BUT he’s slim in the face rather than heavy. Has he ever been heavier, I can’t help but wonder.

  6. Olivia says:

Grady grew up in Charlottesville and went to UVA.

Also, a DUI record–from The Hook:

Melvin Grady, 44, a teacher at Buford Middle School, admits he’s had his own run-ins with the law, including driving while intoxicated about 13 or 14 years ago. He was charged with a third DWI in 2004, according to Charlottesville court records. A jury acquitted him in 2005.

Albemarle court records show that in 2006, Grady was charged with reckless driving for going 93mph in a 65mph zone, and twice he was charged for driving with a suspended license.

I don’t know that he has any relevance to Morgan’s case Olivia, but this guy is a hot mess.

    B

“I was driving to work and I was being hard headed,” he says of the suspended license charge.

“I paid my dues,” says Grady. “Once you start paying those fines, it’s costly.”

  7. Olivia says:

    Yep.

  8. CentVA Native Away says:

Blink, are we to assume that if someone who is on the sex offender registry in one state, Louisiana, for a crime committed in another state, Virginia, that the offender will be in the CODIS database? Or, is it possible that the offense in Virginia, if it occurred in 1997 may not have had the requirement of placing the offender’s DNA in a state held database or CODIS?

Sorry, I’m not very familiar with the laws and am not exactly sure how else to pose this.

  9. redly says:

CentVA — all 50 states participate in CODIS so a convicted sex offender in any state should be included. As with any bureaucracy, I am sure there are gaps and mistakes. Some states do have different DNA collection rules than others, and that can cause inconsistency about who is on it between states, but a convicted sex offender should always be included. Virginia has always been one of the most aggressive jurisdictions for collecting DNA. I believe they started collecting from convicted felons in 1990, so a 1997 offender should be included. They started taking DNA without a warrant upon arrest (prior to conviction) in 2003, though they destroy the record if the person is not found guilty. here is a link with some info about CODIS.

here’s hoping the supreme court ruling on DNA swabbing of persons under arrest is the “break” this case needs.

does anyone know what the ruling means in application? does it mean that since the ruling was handed down, you can now arrest someone today and take a DNA swab for codis?

i’d bet this ruling is making sketch and friends more than a bit nervous. probably the last chance for any possible witness that haven’t come forward with full disclosure to do so. unless they are squeaky clean.

  11. CentVA Native Away says:

Thanks, Redly. That is exactly what I was looking for.

The swabbing issue is tough. Pinch me: I agree with Scalia, but at the same time I certainly am hopeful that it will be an effective means of helping to solve cases, particularly this one.

  12. redly says:

deetee — this was essentially already the law in Virginia and many other states. The supreme court ruling was somebody challenging the Maryland version of the law, and the law was upheld. In other words, it does not change the status quo.

While I’ve read everything on Morgan’s case that’s on the web I have learned a few new things about what had happened inside the arena from Dan. I really believe she was followed outside after listening to this. Was Morgan possibly stalked from someone at work? It wouldn’t be that hard to creep on someone’s facebook or myspace like these sickos do. All I know is the fact that this case is moving like a snail is Ludacris. I feel bad for the Harrington’s bc I’m not sure if this case is ever going to be solved. I pray that it is trust me. However, the realist in me knows the LE in VA is an absolute joke…

    ——————————————

I feel like he is able to hide in plain sight elsewhere, maybe in NOVA where he obviously has some connection.

I was thinking about this case and wondering to myself, ‘what makes a case cold?’. I found a good site which I couldn’t link from my phone, that had a lot of good insight about that subject. One thing that stood out to me is that in one investigation, the media attention given to the case being discussed, forced the wife of an offender to finally come forward because it weighed so heavily on her conscience, although she had not come forward until she was able to connect the dots, go through denial, etc.

I know that the Harringtons’ efforts are going to pay off and this person will be apprehended for these two known crimes and perhaps others.

As we have discussed on here before and as Dan and Gil Harrington mentioned in the recent interview linked above, VSP has to try different investigative channels and open this case up to the public and media more than it has. The same old methodology that has branded this unit is not working out well in this case. I wish them the best as we all want justice to be served for Morgan and for this guy to get out of plain sight and behind bars.

I have followed the Morgan Harrington case from the very beginning but have only commented here couple of times. I so much hope that Morgan’s killer will be brought to justice very soon. Today I did a bit of searching and came across the November, 2012, statement from retired Lt. Joe Rader (http://www.readthehook.com/108762/unsolved-unforgotten-retired-harrington-investigator-reaches-out-open-letter) asking the person who knows what happened to Morgan on the night she was killed to finally come forward, tell the full truth and tell all they know without holding anything back. Lt. Rader goes on the say that the person who knows must have a heavy heart and conscience which can only be relieved by telling the truth. He asks this person what his children, siblings, parents would think or how would he react if a beloved family member of his had been murdered as Morgan had been. Lt. Rader’s message intrigued me and as I pondered, I thought it could be possible that the killer (or killers — or killer and witness) be from or very familiar with the Charlottesville area, and in law enforcement with access to data from the Fairfax incident that produced “Sketch” and his DNA. Is it possible that he/they killed Morgan and later obtained and put some of “Sketch’s” DNA on Morgan’s Pantera T-shirt and then planted it in the bushes in town? Could he/they have been familiar with the farm where Morgan was found? I had never thought about the killer as being in law enforcement or associated with law enforcement until now as I read Lt. Rader’s letter. Maybe it could be just a far-fetched musing of mine and maybe I just so much want this case to be solved. A scenario like this may have already been discussed here and if so, I apologize for the repeat. Thanks for letting me share. Peace.

I drove down Red Hill Road recently plus around the Blandemar Estates area and I saw MANY properties for sale. It almost seems as though people are avoiding living along the perimeter of Anchorage Farm and Blandemar Estates. It seems highly likely, given the terrain that I saw and shown on the maps, that Sketch was at least FAMILIAR with the land and knew no one would be around, especially at night. He may have worked in the area, for example. But it doesn’t seem necessary to assume that he was an Albemarle native, thus he may not be in the area now and he may not consider it “home.” Perhaps the theory that he is a native is an “insider’s” perspective–indicating info known only by LE?

So this case isn’t cold–right–because the police currently pursue leads…crossing fingers that this is true.

    Dearest Morgan,

We are gathered here at the beach again – Dan’s 32nd trip with the same group to these shores. I joined in a bit later, you and Alex later still – first as unsteady toddlers, squealing in the surf and eating fistfuls of sand. I think you loved both the salt and the crunch of it.

As a 7 year old you adamantly dragged your own “surf board” float up the boardwalk and stairs to the ocean. Your skin slowly bronzing, a spray of tiny freckles on your nose, hair white blond from the sun blowing in the wind like an areola of light. The light was called to you – golden child.

Later you were awkward teens; uneasy in morphing bodies, changing roles. Only here the relentless winds and tides blew away pretense and helped you to find/ be yourself in this stark simple place. It was a wondrous and healing process to watch.

That last summer was the best of all – you were so gloriously alive and joy filled, radiantly beautiful. Happiness beaming from you, like a Kleig light. Dan in particular was blessed with the pleasure of spending beach time with an accomplished grown up daughter. You two “grown-ups” cavorted and splashed and played together like children in the waves. Thank you for these precious moments.

This is our fourth trip to Avon, NC since your murder. It’s getting better. We are getting better at feeling the loss, the pain and letting it pass, flow through us like a wave, feeling and not resisting the destructive power which allows us to remain standing in our high tide of grief.

We are figuring it out but it is slow going. Morgan do you remember the scads of pictures I always took – a mama paparazzi, anxious to record every family moment for posterity; I don’t take pictures at the beach anymore; I just can’t find the family.

Still praying for you Dan, Gil, Alex and Morgan. I can’t believe it has been this long and they still haven’t found who did this to Morgan. It just isn’t right. We are all still behind you and beside you in this horrible, horrible crime that was committed against your beautiful, precious daughter. Please know that we think of you often and you will always be in our prayers. 241 Justice for Morgan.

Thank you Gil and Dan for letting us walk with you in our own small ways as you continue to stand in the high tide of your grief. No one should have to suffer this way. Sweet shiny Morgan like a falling star lighting up the heavens taken from you and the world so brutally and abruptly. The Angels wept in heaven the day Morgan left this earth.
Thank you for letting us be with you on this unspeakable journey and Gil for continuing to somehow find the words that so eloquently express that which is beyond comprehension and too awful to imagine. Somehow by looking straight on at the horror of it all and not shying from it you have helped to navigate and chart a course through the most merciless, bleak and ugly terrain.
God bless you Gil, Dan and Alex. Godspeed Morgan who continues to burn brightly. Morgan was incandescent. Light shone out of her. I do believe that light emanated from her soul that timeless, formless, deathless source within us. God bless all who are suffering on the planet.
There is not a day that passes that I do not check on this site hoping against hope for justice for Morgan.
    Peace and love to you.

The South Carolina State Motto is “Dum Spiro Spero” – While I breathe, I hope. Hoping for justice for Morgan.

    Blink,
My posts aren’t posting lately. Not sure why. So sorry if this is a repeat. But . . . I have been thinking of Sketch lately and studying his face and the more I look at him, the more convinced I am that he is not African American, but rather Indian or Middle Eastern or some combination thereof. His eyes and his beard are leading me in this direction.
Hope this posts. Its me, Twinkletoes! :)
    Justice for Morgan.

Twink- nice to see you friend. He could be other things, but he is definitely AA. They have a full profile DNA so they KNOW he has that Loci. I have seen him described as dark skinned AA in the Fairfax attack, as well, but that can be subjective.
