Missing From UVA : Hannah Elizabeth Graham

Charlottesville, VA-  Second  year University of Virginia student Hannah Graham texted her friends last Saturday morning at approximately 1:20 AM- saying she was lost in the area of Wertland Street.

She has not been heard from since.  According to Charlottesville Police Captain Gary Pleasants,  it is believed Ms. Graham was intoxicated at the time of her disappearance and may have been on her way to a party but did not arrive.

In recently released images of Graham leaving her apartment at approximately 9:30PM Friday evening, she is shown wearing black skinny pants and a gold and black mesh crop-top, beige shoes or sneakers.

Ms. Graham’s disappearance is not related to a 2013 teen runaway from Indiana with the same name.

The disappearance of Ms. Graham comes on the heels of the recently adjudicated murder trial of Alexis Murphy  , the disappearance on the same date as Ms. Graham in 2010 of Samantha Clark and of the course the unsolved murder of Morgan Harrington, who disappeared from John Paul Jones arena in October 2009 and later found murdered in January 2010 on Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County.

In Ms. Harrington’s case, the DNA profile and sketch of the suspect in her murder as well as a rape in Fairfax county in September 2005 was released, but he has not been identified by name or captured.

Harrington Murder Suspect Sketch

Ms. Murphy’s  remains have never been recovered and Ms. Clark is still missing,  also believed to also be a victim of Randy Allen Taylor, currently serving a life sentence for Murphy’s kidnapping and murder.

Hannah Graham is described as 5’11 tall, with light brown hair and blue eyes.  Police are asking anyone with information regarding her disappearance to call the Charlottesville Police Department at 434-970-3280 or CrimeStoppers at 434-977-4000.

Yes, Blink, that is what I meant. I mentioned to my husband yrsterday that I always had the sense one could order off-menu after midnight there. He was clueless…had never noticed the vibe that I think is pretty apparent. I have picked up other vibes there too…all in a seemingly upscale setting. Personally, I go for the wine list and comfortable seating that is hard to find other places late night. Showing my age, I guess. But my whole point of the Tempo discussion is that there is likely to be leverage for LE with regard to potential witnesses.

Who thinks a former several-term DA for Albermarle Cty (and when he finally lost an election, ADA for Waynesboro)
and who entered a new life as a defense attorney this year only, was randomly at the PD when Jesse came in? I suggest something was “brokered” and promised to Jesse & family–ie, “you come on in and talk to us and we’ll have an attorney here for you” type of thing. Jesse fled after talking with Camblos.

I’m suggesting, having sized up at the Station the elderly white male former County DA
the preceding Saturday, Mathew might have felt betrayed, and thought there was no help
    for him anywhere, and run.

Only a black, hispanic, or asian male vsb attorney might understand the
atmosphere in Charlottesville and why a consultation eith his alleged attorney
    might scare Mathew imo.

Several missing girls have yet to be found, with Morgan Harrington’s body being an exception. This past summer of 2014 a Psychic reading establishment in Albemarle County just north of Charlottesville was raided, shut down, and is part of an ongoing FBI investigation for what most rumor to be sex trafficking of young females. Blink, do you think the Psychic Readings by Catherine on Route 29 north of Charlottesville investigation, plays any part in any of these missing girl cases?

Thanks for posting the comparison, Dr. Pepper. While I see many similarities and I’m hopeful, I still don’t know if this guy is connected to Morgan. This picture comparison may not be spot on but there are still several things about it that make my heart stop. The hairline and nostrils are very similar but the eyes are what really get to me. So hopeful that the answers are coming soon and that Hannah is reunited with her family.

I apologize, I haven’t read all the comments here yet so I don’t know if anyone has mentioned the possibility of him roofie-ing her drink? Would make sense if they were only at the bar for 15 minutes- it works fast, and he wouldn’t have to do much more to get her to go with him. And an 18 y.o. doesn’t have enough experience in thr bar scene to know not to take her eyes off her drink.

By proffering Camblos, Longo was certainly end-running a potential future “ineffective assistance of Counsel” gambit.
However, I think it was a tone deaf match to the underlying racial issues that will exist.

It was also end-running, imo, appointment of a seasoned Federal Public Defender if Federal charges

  12. Grace says:

Is it telling that a statement was made regarding no connection to Alexis Murphy but no mention of Morgan or am I being wishful? I live about an hour outside of C-vile and grew up 30 minutes between C-ville and Richmond. I can’t count on one hand the number of times my “younger, naive” self went with friends to college parties at UVA and walked around fearless on the same streets as Morgan and Hannah. I recently attended a concert at JPJ with my 21 year old daughter. We had to park in the parking deck down the street from JPJ and walking to our car afterwards, my daughter put her arm through mine and held on tight! It was dark, very few street lights, and lots of underpasses. My insides ached knowing we were walking the same path sweet Morgan had traveled and we paused for a moment on Mrs. Harringtons bridge (we call it that as she goes there often) and squeezed each other a little tighter. we talked on the drive home about how we probably wouldn’t go back. The city appears to have not changed a thing in regards to making the area safer, again, no lighting, we saw ZERO police patrolling anywhere other than right outside JPJ. I stressed to her again, it’s so important to stay with your friends when out, and even though you’re an adult, check in with mom, and always be aware of your surroundings. My point of this lengthy “rant”, my daughter was also affected by Morgan, Alexis, Hannah and to this day, as a 21 year old adult, my girl sends me texts at random hours “safe mom, at such and such with so and so” and I hear her on her way out with friends, laying down the “rules” for the night. “We stay together, whose the DD if needed, and you go with us, you leave with us!!” Mrs. Harrington and Mrs. Murphy broke our hearts but also made having those conversations with our kids even more real” if that makes sense. I pray daily for Hannah’s return and JUSTICE for the Harrington’s and I hope Mrs. Harrington knows in some small way that we hear her and we are working to “Save the next Girl”, starting with our own.

Blessings to you all, and thanks for allowing me to be here with you all!

And lastly, Blink, I’m with you on Chief Longo! I’m crushing hard!! I feel his passion and determination every time he speaks of Hannah and I have much respect for his dedication to finding her!

  13. Rose says:

@Blink. with your following of defense attorneys in trials, and your knowledge of the Murder Business, can you offer a theory as to why this newly minted defense attorney would take on the case of a young man who not only can’t offer a retainer, he can’t afford, and can never repay, what would be very steep trial expenses? Could the attorney have been thinking of a quick plea? My imagination of the preflight consultation has Camblos saying “Looking bad, boy. Give me something to work with here (information).” And Mathew not having any information to give. that is a bad scenario in terms of finding Hannah.

    1. free publicity for full pay clients. We seriously underreport white collar crime in this country more than any other, and prosecute it even less. Consider it like the difference between kids whose parents can afford to write a check for $50K a year for school and kids that need aid from the portion of packages available. Balances the budget.

    2. He lost a major high profile case out of the gate really.

    3. I doubt Camblos said anything to him at all except get in your car and do not say a word, turn off your phone and head to my office. I cannot advise you over the phone and pre-consult- it implies an Atty relationship which would be improper at this juncture. Again, do not speak to LE whatsoever.

    * Note here- I actually wrote a paper on a case I studied where the sheriff actually sent a map of what he believed to be a suspects areas of crime ( serial offender) to his criminal defense atty after he asked for one and BEFORE he met with him.

Very very narrow escape of a complete suppression of the case in chief.

  14. alexandra says:

Blink, how long does it take to get the results back of his DNA to compare to sketch?

Hmm, how to answer that- it is not necessarily the timing for comparison but also the type of sample and methods for testing that would allow a base comparison.

  15. dda says:

@rose. Jesse Matthrw has retaimed Jim Camblos so that is not why he left town. And just fyi, our prosectutors are called Commonwealth’s Attorneys. And many criminal defense attorneys are former prosecutors—it is advantageous for most defendants to have someone with that level of experience and insight into the prosecution side of the equation. And also fyi Longo has a law degree.

Being local, wanted to give some info… A family member of mine played football with LJ growing up & is seriously concerned as he says there is no way that LJ did this on his own. He says that it always seemed LJ was very behind mentally. There is a strong belief by those knowing LJ, that he had to have help – he couldn’t hide anything on his own. Being a mom, this concerns me quite a bit & I am hoping LJ talks.

The Psychic Readings place has only been listed as an IRS investigation here locally. That place has been there as long as I can remember – seriously well over 20 years. But in the last 5 years, it has changed quite a bit. Lots of new cars, new sign & a lot of addition & fixing of the house.

As a child I was taught to be terrified of the Downtown Mall at night. Then there was a huge change and the Mall was turned into a cultural beauty with Friday’s After Five making it the “IT” place to be. I felt safe there with children and have frequented there often. Yes, there is a vast array of people – the city & county are represented by every group possible. But I honestly felt we were all safe. Now, I’m once again terrified. Hannah isn’t the only one to disappear from the area – transgender Dashad Sage Smith frequented the Mall and is missing from the same area.

I pray daily for Hannah & Sage and their families.

They now have DNA for both JLM and Sketch, so whether the images match is irrelevant.

I agree that the sketch of Sketch is fairly generic and could match many; that is a function not just of the beholders but of the description the victim could provide.

Compare this one to Sketch (the brutality of this and prior offenses are certainly a match):

I have to wonder if these allegations of rape that got him kicked out of college and sidetracked his football aspirations fueled his anger toward women. And how in the Hell could his crazy grandmother have made the statement to the media that Jessie Matthew was a good boy who had never been in trouble when he was kicked out of college for sexual assaulting a woman??? Blink, very early on when Morgan was still missing, I recall you profiling him as having a family that enabled him and turned a blind eye to the red flags. Meet grandmother.

While going to stay with friends or family in a different town or even nearby state to avoid the media circus in Cville would be understandable, for JLM to have traveled such a great distance and be found in a state (TX) that contains an international border seems very suspicious. Could this behavior/act be used as circumstantial evidence of guilt in a trial, or is it not allowable for some reason?

  23. Scout says:

    @Patricia
“Do most of the establishments in the area check id’s at the door? And does Tempo not have a doorman? Maybe this played a part in the choice to go into Tempo.”

I think you could be spot on. In college we knew all of the bars that had doorman. We also knew the bars that had unguarded back doors we could sneak into. Once inside guys, and men, would buy us drinks. And we got to know a few bartenders and they wouldn’t ID us. Later in my soph year I had my sister’s ID (a janky DMV identification card). Never got it taken.

Most bars did have bouncers but the fancier lounges and restaurants did not have them. I remember having an upperclass guy friend when I was a fresh/sophomore. I would sometimes meet him at the lounge for a night cap after we went to the bars. He was buddies with the bartender well so they didn’t ask for my ID.

This could be the case with JM – he may have knew the bartender and/or he was trying to impress her and make her think he is a classy guy by taking her to an upscale restaurant/bar.

Which is it? And how long would it take to test DNA from Morgan Harrington’s case?

  27. Rose7 says:

If this is the perp, he knows the area well; all the cracks and crevices. If someone contemporary with him in that area could be asked where he would hide someone, it might help. I still believe Morgan may have ‘gotten’ away and was hunted down, but Hannah may not have. He had no idea anyone would be on to him so soon, so he committed his crimes and went about his normal thoughts as to hide them.

‪#‎BringHannahHome‬ ‪#‎NBC12‬ Restaurant where police say ‪#‎JesseMatthew‬ left with ‪#‎HannahGraham‬ just released this statement: On Wednesday, September 17th, when the Charlottesville Police Department first
released video that showed Hannah walking along the downtown mall at around 1 am,
Tempo was able to immediately provide authorities with information that pinpointed
the location of the Person of Interest, Mr. Matthew. Details of credit card receipts
showed that he had made purchases at the bar shortly after midnight while Hannah was
still making her way towards the downtown mall from Preston Avenue. Those records
also confirm that he returned to Tempo at 1:10 am and left shortly after, although Ms.
Graham was not seen inside the restaurant and was never served. She was, however,
noticed by the door-person outside the restaurant at that time, and seen leaving with
Matthew shortly thereafter. These details helped police reconstruct Ms. Graham’s
    movements and last known whereabouts.

I appreciated locals input, thank you! Thoughts and hugs to the Grahams and LE.

@Blink. I misunderstood & thought Campblos was physically at the station.

  30. dda says:

Going to Texas is not admissible in a trial for abduction. It is not relevant ie probative of whether Mattew abducted Hannah or not. And Camblos is not “newly minted” in any sense of the phrase. Switching sides so to speak really has no effect on our ability to handle/try a case, especially after decades of practicing law. And I can almost guarantee you that Camblos did not ask Matthew for information. At the time, there were no warrants for anything and Matthew was free to go about his life. That is almost certainly what any lawyer would have advised, and correctly so. Things changed later when the reckless driving occurred but we do not know what, if any, contact between Matthew and anyone has occurred since that time. We do not even know that Matthew had access to news, internet, radio, etc. after saturday night. We also cannot speculate that there is no money for legal representation…family and friends may have resources that are unknown to folks posting here. Likewise, calling Matthew’s grandmother crazy is quite unkind. No one here knows what she knew about him leaving Liberty. I said many pages ago that this case would be heartbreaking for everyone involved….families have been and will be destroyed by this. The overwhelming sense here in cville is sadness even though everyone still hopes to find Hannah alive.

Respectfully dda I agree with everything you said, and ultimately that issue about ending up in Texas may not appear to be admitted as consciousness of guilt, but that would likely be a Judge’s decision. I would not say that anyone can say as an absolute it is not admissible without the standards test and argument.

  31. mike says:

The word from the Daily Progress is that Hannah remained outside of the Tempo while Matthew went in. I am surmising that LJ went in to buy something more than a drink. I believe that Hannah walked with deliberation down to the area of the mall near Tempo. She had something important on her mind. Why would she allow a strange, large black man (or any man) to put his arm around her for the last part of her walk? Either something was prearranged or this guy was really smooth, like, “hey pretty girl watch you looking for this late at night, I can help you find it.” I believe that the something was some sort of substance. I think that she ran a portion of the way down Preston because she either did not want to be late for a prearranged meeting or that she was headed to a specific business/bar that may be closing at that hour. Apparently she waiting patiently while outside of Tempo. Just like a moth to the flame. If this post offends anybody’s sensabilities about what they think about Hannah, it is, of course, not meant to do so, only to suggest some commonsensical scenarios that I would bet the police are looking at anyway. We shouldn’t let our thinking be clouded by avoiding unpleasant ideas. Maybe some of the saff of Tempo needs to be squeezed a bit.

    Another local perspective…
When walking downtown, even whe you’re not alone, having a stranger walk up to you to try & talk or even try & touch you is NOT out of the ordinary. Especially on busy nights. Apparently, LU took action, kicking him off the football team, revoking his scholarship and expelling him.

The local LE, however, found “no evidence” to bring charges, even though the girl reportedly ended up in the hospital.

  38. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Mike

I agree with you regarding what may have been available at Tempo. That could be the very reason they were closed on Monday as I posted earlier.

Jessie was a football player at Liberty University and was forced to leave because of an alleged rape of a female at a frat. house. Liberty is a private University operated by the Baptist church. That was probably another case of a football player getting a pass on bad behavior in that he was not charged for the crime. We have many of those cases at the college and university level across the country. It even happens at the high school level.

He may be a little slow mentally, but was sufficiently successful to be named “the player of the year” in C’ville. He was a defensive lineman at Liberty. Those that play that position just need to be big, tough, strong and be taught to follow the defensive captains calls.

Why would Jessie run when there were no charges against him? He was either guilty of the deed or played a part in Hannah’s disappearance or he knows who did it and was both afraid of LE and the perps.

Jessie was apprehended on the beach in Chambers county Texas while camping with a tent. Many of the houses along the beach in that area are not occupied on a regular basis. Therefore, sheriff’s deputies would check the area several times a day.

The county seat of Chambers county is Anahuac. (pronounced Ana wac) This is a sparsely populated county with about 60,000 people. It is farther to Anahuac than to Galveston. The warrant was interstate so they took him to the Galveston jail. The cost of his incarcration will be billed to C’ville anyway so the jail didn’t matter. Actually, with the number of heliports along that area of hwy 87 it is just a five minute ride to the criminal justice complex in Galveston.

They do have security video of Jessie at a gas station on Galveston island, so he did make there and then took the ferry across the bay.

It makes me ache for all those young women who erroneously have bought the foolish idea that women are the equal of men in all ways and take dangerous risks with their choices. Hanna was reported to be a straight A student at UVA. Unfortunately for her, she was not street smart or she was looking for drugs at the wrong time of night.

Young women should never travel alone after dark in an environment around a college or university.

Red Hill area REALLY jumps out at me, I do wonder if it is more than a coincidence or not. That and the whole cab thing, you cant help but be suspicious about the relationship to Morgan’s situation.
I think it has been great how open the CPD has been, and I really believe it has been to the benefit of the investigation. My goodness, the community cannot help if they don’t know they might know something. Kudos to them for doing it right I say!

  42. jessejane says:

I suspect that references here to Food Lion really mean Foods of All Nations, the local grocery on Ivy kind of tucked behind the Copeley Road bridge from which Morgan disappeared, near the JPJ.

For out of town folks wanting news links, the oldest local news station in town is NBC29.com. The ABC/CBS/Fox affiliate is Newsplex.com. C-ville.com is a free local paper that Courteney Stuart writes for. The local official newspaper is the Daily Progress.

Jessejane, thank you. That is correct.

Irish, the closest one would be the Food Lion off of 5th St. Which can be a very sketchy area as well. The nicer student homes run right up to a rough section of town. The Food Lion is right at that junction.

The question I want to know is who was JM’s probation officer. Or alternatively if he did not have one who was arranging all of these get out of jail free cards for him. Had to be someone who is widely known to many people to be involved with him through all of this stuff.

Did he have one? He has never been convicted of a felony that I can see.

I think athletes at the age range of Hannah might Grace, albeit untested in the normal sector- the teenage bantor about what sports are tougher and what sports require more stamina goes on in my house frequently, lol.
