Missing From UVA : Hannah Elizabeth Graham

Charlottesville, VA-  Second  year University of Virginia student Hannah Graham texted her friends last Saturday morning at approximately 1:20 AM- saying she was lost in the area of Wertland Street.

She has not been heard from since.  According to Charlottesville Police Captain Gary Pleasants,  it is believed Ms. Graham was intoxicated at the time of her disappearance and may have been on her way to a party but did not arrive.

In recently released images of Graham leaving her apartment at approximately 9:30PM Friday evening, she is shown wearing black skinny pants and a gold and black mesh crop-top, beige shoes or sneakers.

Ms. Graham’s disappearance is not related to a 2013 teen runaway from Indiana with the same name.

The disappearance of Ms. Graham comes on the heels of the recently adjudicated murder trial of Alexis Murphy  , the disappearance on the same date as Ms. Graham in 2010 of Samantha Clark and of the course the unsolved murder of Morgan Harrington, who disappeared from John Paul Jones arena in October 2009 and later found murdered in January 2010 on Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County.

In Ms. Harrington’s case, the DNA profile and sketch of the suspect in her murder as well as a rape in Fairfax county in September 2005 was released, but he has not been identified by name or captured.

Harrington Murder Suspect Sketch

Ms. Murphy’s  remains have never been recovered and Ms. Clark is still missing,  also believed to also be a victim of Randy Allen Taylor, currently serving a life sentence for Murphy’s kidnapping and murder.

Hannah Graham is described as 5’11 tall, with light brown hair and blue eyes.  Police are asking anyone with information regarding her disappearance to call the Charlottesville Police Department at 434-970-3280 or CrimeStoppers at 434-977-4000.

FYI in Charlottesville & Albemarle County, if you ask for a public defender, as you have no money, they go down a list of attorneys (and it’s a very long list, that looks like every attorney in the area is on) and you are given whoever is on the schedule for that day. In the past I had to use one for both emolument issues & family court & was amazed they had so many to “choose” from. Not sure if it’s a local requirement, but all attorneys I was assigned were very seasoned. Of course you are given an attorney that specializes in your type of case. Camblos may have just been the one on the schedule that day. Most attorneys are within a block of the court, which is right by the police station. Him being there that fast is to be expected.

I’m sure Matthew will try & say something about being mentally incompetent, but there’s no way that should fly since he did go to 2 years of college away from home – something a lot of locals don’t get to do. The Liberty University event really bothers me – the fact that it took so long for that to come out, even scarier.

@ATG. Do you have an idea of likely currents if there was a body drop from the ferry?
Does that ferry run after dark?
Tho I don’t see how that would be possible with ferry surveillance cameras.
But, it seems someone might have coached Mathew to head for the Gulf current
loop. If he wanted to disappear rather than make a disposition, Chicago seemed wiser.

Based on LU incident, perhaps he loses impulse control after a few bourbons
and when he does, he is dangerously physically aggressive. There is no way imo
Jerry Jr would let it get out students had an alcohol fueled party where an alleged rape
occurred. My own opinion is alcohol violated LU rules, and the girl would be told
you can stay if… rather than be expelled. So unfortunate he was
not subjected to trial then. Maybe this event will empower her older self & she will come forward.

Oh yes lots of lesser crimes get a PO in VA. In Virginia one gets a PO with as little as a underage drinking, although I don’t know if all crimes get one, possibly just ones where there is dismissal based on some action being taken like classes or what not. And there can be squirrely things like special deals worked out with the prosecutor of judge, of course based on circumstances that “need” monitoring of a PO. I bet he did have one appointed given his football talent at one time. Also if someone who was known to be able to work these things out in a professional capacity spoke up on his behalf? I am wondering if that is what is going on in this case. I have heard he was a standout football player and that would go a long way with some folks in the kind of court environment and social environment we are dealing with here which would have seen that he had some potential at one point and tried to help him. Then there could be made the case that he got the wrong kind of help.

I’m on the road today and pretty sure what is supposed to be a 7 1/2 hour drive is going to end up being a 10 Hour Dr. because I have spent 10 minutes each time I’ve stopped to read up on the search for Hannah.

Using Siri now to post this comment, so apologies for typos.

I googled Hannah earlier today and saw a headline that said ” the search for Hannah extends to Texas.”

I did not have time to read the article but at that moment I realized that he may have fled and his sisters car to dispose of Hannah’s remains (in sorry if too graphic) and not just to capture.

I’m sure that the vehicle is being processed right now in Texas. And will know shortly if she had ever been in that car.

If I do end up finding evidence that she was in fact his sisters vehicle, then we have a much wider search area to cover. I mean anywhere between Charlottesville Virginia Galveston Texas that he could had traveled down.

I am hoping that this is not the case however in case it is I hope that they were able to figure out the route that he took and obtain any surveillance video.

I wish that Siri could read me the comments while I drive. Was able to get Charlottesville talk radio station on for a few minutes but they had already finished talking about the case.

Praying for Hannah’s family and friends and looking forward to reading what they find out next in this investigation. So heartbreaking.

    From NBC29:

Four teams of trained search crews fanned down Carter Mountain in Albemarle County Thursday. Carter Mountain is the same area crews searched about two months ago for another woman who went missing. Bonnie Santiago, 56, was last seen on Carters Mountain July 12.

Billy Chrimes with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management denies any correlation between Thursday’s search and the search for Santiago.

I highly suspect that he was responsible for Morgan, and many other victims. Looking at Morgan specifically…

    1) She was locked out of the arena without access to her car…he drove a cab then.
    2) The grandma sighting sounded very similar to the way he approached Hannah
    3) The turning off of the cell phone almost immediately
    4) The proximity of him to where Morgan’s shirt was found
    5) He looks like Sketch
    6) His 2002 rape incident
    7) His sister’s proximity to Red Hill
    8) Morgan and Hannah have similar appearance…tall, blond, thin, college age.

    I think they’ve caught a serial offender.

Justice for Morgan, Hannah, and any/all others

I am amazed, if it’s true, that the alleged rape at Liberty University took place on October 17th–exactly seven years to the day before Morgan’s assault and murder. Clearly, JM is very, very familiar with Southern Albemarle County–grew up there, went to elementary at Red Hill (very near Anchorage Farm) and to Monticello High School (very near Carter’s Mountain). Speaking of which, has there been any further info on what happened to the woman who also “vanished off the face of the earth” from Carter’s Mountain about 8 weeks ago? Here’s a link:

‘The Hours Before LJ Met Hannah
    http://insidecville.com/blog/ljs-timeline/

“He kept trying to put his hands on my legs, above and below the knee,” the young woman says. “He’d been way too aggressive all night, putting his arm around me, picking me up, putting his hands on my legs. I looked at him and told him to keep his hands off of me.” They were in Tempo Restaurant on Fifth Street in downtown Charlottesville. It was shortly after midnight, in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 13.
The woman is a 25-year old resident of Charlottesville. The man is 32-year old Jesse “LJ” Matthew, who was arrested September 25 in Galveston, Texas on a charge of Abduction With Intent to Defile in the case involving the still-unexplained disappearance of second-year University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.

  18. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Rose

The ferry does run after dark. I have been on it after daylight hours.

Galveston island is a barrier island at the mouth of Galveston bay. There is a great deal of ship traffic into and out of the Port of Houston as this is the place the channel begins. There is also the Inter-coastal Canal for barge traffic from Texas to Florida.

If you are thinking that Jessie took Hannah is his sister’s car and was going that far for disposal, that would really be strange. Depending how he drove to Texas, he would have crossed the Mississippi, the Atchafalaya,(one of the deepest rivers in the country), the Sabine, the Trinity and the San Jacinto. Any one of those rivers would be suitable. However, the body would likely float after a few days and it would be found.

I read that there was a search underway in that area- so I presume there must have been evidence located with the vehicle like a shovel, soil or sand, etc.

I doubt very much he transported Hannah in a vehicle anywhere following his confrontation with LE.

I sincerely hope his family is encouraging him to relieve the horrific angst the Graham’s are going through and allow LE to recover Hannah and lay her to rest properly.

Once again, we have a predator operating freely and purposefully preying on young women when there were multiple allegations and imo, multiple signs this man was dangerous.

  19. A Texas Grandfather says:

Well Grace, I probably said that comment in a less than accurate way.
It probably should have been based on the behavior of some women they probably think they have all the same rights and privileges of men regardless of the danger.

One of the major problems in this area is how men and women view each other and themselves between 18 and 30. Being a twin with a girl gives me experience and a perspective that few men have. Yes, I can well relate to the point Blink is making. Her two are two to three years apart and everything physical between them evened up more than a year ago or perhaps sooner.

I also have grand children (older than Blink’s two) that are boy older than sister and watched the interplay the first time big brother got bested by little sister in an activity. It was simply muscle control and not raw strength. He was speechless. I had to turn away so he would not see me laughing.

….HANNAH is a loved child and her family can not find her. Morgan’s mother had to hold her child’s skull, her lovely bones, in her hand…this is so so very wrong. I want the Graham’s to know where they daughter is what happened to her. I want the Harrington’s to find out who left their daughter broken in a cow field. Mom, I can not confirm this but I think it was said that the Fairfax rape victim returned to her native home.

That is my understanding as well. One thing I also wish to mention is that in some cultures the stigma of rape or in her case sexual assault/rape can be grounds for murder or other particularly heinous acts on a victim as it is considered a “shame on the family”- if you can believe that. It is a horrific practice, but it absolutely exists- I want to say her Nationality or country of origin may make that a consideration if she is there.

On a side note I watched NG last night and they showed JLM speaking to the judge in Texas. In a very uncomfortable voice JLM wanted his clothes back when he was in his jail hospital cell where he had a long metal thing (I assume his cot) in his cell. Maybe suicide watch?
Anyway for a slight moment my mommy voice felt sorry for him…sleeping with no close on a metal cot…a gentle giant trapped and vulnerable. It was a slight moment only.

I apologize if this question has been asked but I’ve been thinking about the alleged sexual assault victim from LU…by “not enough evidence” could that mean she chose not to pursue it or was persuaded not to pursue it or was it simply “not enough evidence”? I know no one knows and it’s pure speculation but I’m just wondering if she could now, 12 years later, pursue it, in relation to building a case? I would bet my life that LE has been in contact with her with lots of questions…

I just did a paper last Semester in Criminology on the history of rape laws- in short, they were born of a crime against property. There are very large burdens to overcome in proving a rape allegation in certain situations and I don’t have the facts on the LU case- but I can tell you it is being re-evaluated.

  28. dda says:

@mom3.0, Even if there is a DNA match to other cases, I think they would be doing a lot of legwork before prosecutung those cases. They would want to know, if possible, where Matthew was on those occasions, who he was with, etc. If there is a match at this time, they can take time to be thorough bc he is in custody and not going anywhere anytime soon. And as Blink said, there would need to be coordination among the jurisdictions about when and how to prosecute.
@rose. The fall pattern could be early school year, drunk and vulnerable women but I would guess something more if all of these are linked. Something traumatic in childhood at this time of year. CNU released info that Matthew left that school on October 15, 2003 and noted that it was unusual for a student to leave at that point in a semester. I wonder about his base level of intelligence, his childhood, and head injuries associated with football…a neuropsych evaluation might shed light on the apparent dichotomy in his personality, the apparent lack of impluse control, lack of boundaries, etc. Something is not right, imo, and I wonder about what steps were taken to address these issues or if there was just a huge level of denial.

I completely agree about the neuro eval- my spidey senses are tingling that Mr. Matthew is no stranger to the Region Ten

  29. GweorgiaDad says:

I don’t quite see the criticism of Liberty (I know a lot of people don’t like that institution). They investigated the event, kicked him out of school and notified the authorities. That is a lot more than Florida State has done with Jameis Winston.

If his DNA matches Sketch, I wonder if the authorities actually have enough evidence to charge him for that crime. As far as I know, the only evidence linking sketch to MH is DNA from somewhere at the AF scene. Without some corroborating evidence, that would be a difficult case to take to trial.

Actually GD the DNA linking sketch does not come from the crime scene, but her shirt draped over a bush, which imo, was put there deliberately to be found.

He is an opportunistic predatory thug who has done this before.
Someone wondered how he “gets off” (no charges filed or
charges dropped)? First, he seems after LU to have picked on strangers
too wasted to reject his arm move described by his friend & unlikely to
remember him. Second, there’s that phlanx of mother, father, uncle who are
willing to go in with him and plead his past, personality, and future,
but I bet they’ve roped in a pastor when needed.

The business? Arguably the two slipped in the side door when someone left while
young door lady was busy. However, either she saw HG come out with him or wait for
him there, and I bet it was the former. She had seen he was a patron and witnessed
his being physical with a married female patron. She saw HG with him too drunk to stand.
Even if HG did not seek admission, but waited outside, that told door lady she was a minor
who was with a stranger who was served at the business, a man who had been physically inappropriate
with a female stranger once in front of her. The business should have hired an older more mature
doorman with the judgment to stop JM, assume control of HG, and ask the manager to call for an ambulance
for a young lady “found in the street.” If JM refused, I personally would reply, It’s an ambulance or 911
for pollice. The 23 year door lady was chosen by business owner (in my opinion) as eye candy out front on
a weekend rather than hiring a muscular older male. It seems to me Tempo remains at risk of a civil suit based on
    this interview.

  34. HokieHeart says:

Do you think the murderer kept the shirt in Morgan’s case as a sort of trophy and then someone came across it and put it out to be found so that he would be caught without having to really turn him in? Or do you think there were multiple people involved in the crimes against Morgan and this was someone wanting to put all the blame on one of the other responsible parties? If it were a trophy type of thing, one would think he would keep clothing or something else of other victims as well?

    Thanks!

Moreover, I have seen repeat first time offenders getting probation while they are in the midst of it, and still getting off in a different county. Somepin is up with that circuit court system. B”

I wonder if in referencing “circuit court system,” you meant the DA?

  36. Nagol says:

    I want to throw this out there for the BOC readers as something to consider;

Througout the Morgan Harrington case LE has maintained people who know sketch would not believe him capable of such a violent crime. LE has also directly appealed to sketch to turn himself in as demonstrated in Lt. Rader’s open letter on November 13th, 2012 (encourage you to read it again now).

    The following phrases are noted;

    -person of faith
    -consumed your conscience
    -free your burden
    -sympathetic and dignified
    -do the right thing
    -makes you nauseated
    -causes you shame

I suspect the offender “sketch” apologized in some way to the Fairfax victim. Multiple things come to mind in terms of an apology, but it all comes down to the offender being remorseful. I submit that if the road rage incident in which the victim indicated JLM apologized and drove him to the ER and friend/family accounts of JLM being gentle and incapable of such violence are true then we are in fact looking at Morgan’s killer.

A remorseful offender changed things, the entire paradigm shifts in my opinion. Something to consider & with all the critical thinking going on here, wanted people to consider it in their analysis of the case.

    I have a small vent…

Here we have someone who should have been charged with rape in 2002, and as I understand it, other offenses in 2009. And, he went on to commit who knows what against how many victims.

Just a couple of days ago, I read about a guy who served SOME time for killing his son years back and now just killed his daughter and grandchildren.

What good is catching these maniacs if we don’t KEEP them off the streets?

Yes I saw that in Florida. Really sad that those kids were exposed to that man.

We don’t have the facts about the 2002 incident- there could be several areas that prohibited prosecution and I am telling you 1000% of the time, mostly one can expect that the defendant will claim consensual sex if there is a smidge of evidence in the first place. I am giving the benefit of the doubt here, for all we know the young lady decided not to cooperate, or some other issue.

I don’t know but I do know that she landed in the hospital and he was expelled and his scholarship revoked but he went on to play elsewhere- that is effed up.

I do not have a doubt that Mr. Matthew is a serial offender and the only boundary that is about to become familiar to him is metal bars. I am as angry as the next person- but I don’t want to jump on LE or the Commonwealth Atty until all the facts are in. I fear I may be jumping on both eventually, but lets evaluate as the facts become known.

Maybe Virginia will have to enact a law that Texas enacted more than 35 years ago. That is if a customer in Texas enters a bar and is to wasted to be served, they must not serve them and they must attempt to get them a safe ride to their home. Otherwise, the bar becomes legally responsible if something happens that the customer creates or someone else attacks the disabled person.

Grace, you were right about that little stretch of beach being a part of Galveston county. I was using a very small map that did not show the Chambers county line following the small inlet North of the Bolivar peninsula. With a larger map, one could see it.

It is too bad that JM has to sleep on a metal cot nude and with no bedding. If he had not run away, that might not have happened. This guy has a checkered past where he was never made responsible for his acts. LE is often hampered in their work by laws and rules that protect the citizens rights with people like JM taking full advantage.

Unless LE or searchers find Hannah, the Grand Jury route is the only thing available. There is always the possibility that JM could take a plea for a lesser sentence. If that happens, IMO LE should not back off in trying to find his possible involvement in the other missing persons crimes that remain unsolved. Maybe DNA will match for more than one crime.

I would like to know if any forensic, DNA was found with Cassandra Morton’s remains. She went missing I believe exactly a week after Morgan. If DNA was found and it linked to sketch would we know that? I highly suspect not since there was such reluctance by LE in Morgan’s case to relate her possible killer to the Fairfax sexual assault. I remember clearly Lt. Rader’s statement…location, location, location…?? Fairfax…Charlottesville..Lynchburg.

He changed clothes at one point from the plaid shirt to the white shirt…guess he got sweaty. It is possible he also got what ever he may have used to subdue Hannah such as a drug or taser. The hospital was close and he may have had a locker there or I suppose he could have had clothes in his car. It does not look like he had enough time to get home after being rejected by (and I bet they are counting their lucky stars)ladies at Tempo.

Ode- I don’t think he changed, that is a function of the particular CCTV

Getting a few things off my chest:
1.The CPDtips@charlottesville.org tip line for the Charlottesville Police Department should flash across all lines of media more times than enough. I fear Chief Longo may have scared people away from calling with his angry demands to do so each and every time he held a public conference.
2.I feel it’s a mistake for Longo to say publically for owners of large parcels of land to call in and say that they have checked their property so that it can be checked off the list and search resources used elsewhere. If someone is helping to hide (presumably a body) something they would now know to move it to an area that police have already or will no longer look.
3.Everyone in the UVA hospital area knows, empty train box cars sit overnight and are gone the next day or so. I am curious if all railroad cars were checked.
4.There is also a body of water directly behind the UVA South Parking garage. I wonder if there is a plan to drag it for weighted objects. 5.The reservoir too for that matter since Matthews lived relatively close to the bridge. 6.Lastly, UVA a few cardboard box compactors on campus, one by the Medical Research #4 building and one behind the new Battle Building that should probably be checked since they are known to UVA employees. 7.I noticed in campsite video out of Texas, there are blue and also clear rubber gloves in the camp fire ashes. This leads me to believe Matthews has returned to UVA gathering items. Medical gloves are blue. He had to wear gloves to transport patients. UVA has lots of cameras that probably need to be reevaluated. 8. Matthews needs a better lawyer than the one he has retained. I feel he will not be given due justice with James Camblos, who has a history of not following the proper channels.

Where did LJM reside previously, specifically in 2009, does anyone know?

Nagol is my new BF ….. I agree with her totally.

Has anyone heard anymore about the search on Carter’s Mountain. I know I spent hours going over that area with all the google maps and stuff. I remember a lot of water (lake) somewhere there.

Still Anchorage Farm didn’t indicate fishing … but the perp sure knew the area. There must be people around there that have seen him and know who he is around there. I hope CPD seeks out the residents up there.

    Please find Hannah.

There is a fishing lake on AF/Blandemar
