Dr. Phil Show Hosts Missing Portland Child Kyron Horman’s Step Mom Terri Horman Over Two Episodes

I have been covering this case since Kyron Horman disappeared from Skyline School in June, 2010.    Like most missing persons cases I have covered in the past,  I am of the strong opinion that best efforts at the truth are the only way to propel investigations that, similarly to Kyron’s, have gone cold for one reason or another.   This approach has worked in resolving some of my previous cases.    I am proud of that.  I remain steadfast to the integrity involved in those and future cases.

Over the past 10 months (or so) I have been developing an updated series on Kyron’s case to include my multiple interviews with Kyron’s step-mom,  Terri Horman.   Needless to say as she was the subject of at least three simultaneous cases before an Oregon court and remains a person of interest by the agency investigating her sons disappearance, this has been an arduous and sometimes delicate journey.    Ms. Horman’s experiences during the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Kyron Horman are critically important to propelling his case and with great hope- finding the truth about what happened to this cherubic and innocent child.    There are dozens of sources,  collateral interviews, forensic experts and legal analysts that also contribute to my series and have done so because of their belief that my motivation is to bring to light information and opinions in such a way that would almost “require” a focused review of Kyron’s case and the likely shaking of that proverbial tree everyone talks about.

Set to publish about 6-ish weeks ago I was asked to postpone the first installment of the series, which I did.  I subsequently learned Ms. Horman was participating in the Dr. Phil program after she completed taping.  Dr. Phils producers were well aware that Ms. Horman had interviewed with me extensively, and anticipated my series would be publishing information that was not known to the public previously in the days prior to her scheduled episode.    When Ms. Horman conveyed to me that she feels obligated to speak out about “her son” in any national medium that will have her,   I most certainly respected that.  I still do.

While Dr. Phil seems like a gregarious fellow for sure,   I have zero interest in being associated with his program, nor do I believe his shows content is designed to do any furtherance of investigation or truth.  There is much concern (although I have no affiliation to the show whatsoever) that the timing of the publication of my series on the Kyron Horman matter might be interpreted differently or inadvertently contribute to the programs content or audience reactions.     Not what I signed on for.   A missing 7 year old boy six years running is not a framework for entertaining a target audience.   He is not fodder for online social media bully campaigns- yet it occurs.

I will be publishing my series on Kyron’s case at a later date, in it’s entirety with no editing adjustments as a result of any of the appearances on Dr. Phil.   I appreciate your patience and your understanding.   Feel free to discuss the show below.

OT to ATG my father was a hobo. dropped out of school in 5th grade. Rode freight cars from DC thru WV, Chicago, and so on to CA. There he taught himself calculus and became a Govt Transitman Surveyer. Many postcards to mother from there, traveled across WA, OR CA, AZ and so on. The actor Andy Devine was on one crew. The country was not settled and was mostly unpopulated.
But there was plenty of crime.
The thing was if you could learn you didnt need a HS degree much less college for a good job. He later became a bank examiner for the Fed. But he coukdn’t break into business after WWI. One try was an ice cream shop. All business—shops, dept stores, were controlled by oligarchy type informal city social associates who put sole entrants out of business fast. (This was before Depression). I see the same kinds of business controlling interests in Portland now. insular. And thevGovernment was a chief employer across the country and a great levelor of social and economic class. Govt jobs were avenues out of poverty and still are. My parents wanted me to have a govt job so bad, my father urged I go to work for the Postal Service.

    Rose

Your father was typical of the times. The high school graduation rate was probably around thirty percent. People who were ambitious were mostly self-taught.

One does not need calculus to run a transit. Trig is very helpful. The transit was one of the results of the need for more accurate surveying required for the building of the railroads. It mostly replaced the plane table method beginning in the 1850′s. However, the plane table method was in use in the late 1950′s by seismic crews.

Yes, I can survey with a transit or even a dumpy level if the transit is not available. The new electronic transits take most of the work out of calculating angles and distance.

gotta ask. iirc Kaine folded in the startup public search donations
when he incirporated a Foundation. Rather than bulk up his Fdtn, why didn’t he spend that money to hire private investigators like retired fbi C Watts, brilliant techie Mandia, or others as a private team? The Fdtn can’t spend money on 1 child’s search, but that $ in the Bank of America acoount, if not turned over to the Fdtn, could have. But imo Desiree’s roadside searches have been futile; she needed to hire professional investigators.

Thank you ATG for the history on how schools segregate grade levels. I was struck, like Rose with what the article seems to be saying about the older kids were being phased into Skyline. I think it had 8th graders in the school the year before Kyron was abducted. With that transition were teachers coming into Skyline for the first time, and though it seems SZ was not a Skyline teacher, they all have people in their lives who might have gained access to the school thru them. A lot of changes for that little school.

  9. A Texas Grandfather says:

    erose

School Districts are often faced with a choice of adding grades to a primary or grammar school or closing the school due to too few pupils.
This is probably the prime reason for additional grades at Skyline.

The basic difference in one-room schools of the 19th and early 20th centuries was the number of pupils. Small one or two room schools may have between 50 and 70 pupils. The older children were used to teach and work with the younger students. This was a very effective organization. It also prevented the older ones from taking advantage of the smaller young students.

Today, the social mores have turned that on its head. History teaches the newer generations proper behavior and helps to prevent the lack of understanding that is necessary for social advancement. The “Hippy” mantra of the 1960′s of “don’t trust anyone over thirty” was the worst thing that could have happened for they lost the opportunity to gain wisdom from those older than themselves.

I have my doubts about the retired Dallas Police Chief. He was loosing a lot of officers prior to his retirement. That may not have been his fault, it could have been the Mayor’s lack of support for LE.

If they did hire the ex Dallas Chief, he would have experience in running a large agency. Portland’s problem is at the Mayor and city council level along with a powerful union organization. The people need to clean this up prior to hiring a new chief.

Maybe an order like this was what Kaine feared when he did not advocate whatsoever for Kyron.
I’m surprised Porter didn’t give Terri one in 2nd grade.

this PPS no trespass police order does not cover the violent nor threatening parent. Rather the article covers a parent of a 1st grader assaulted by a peer at school, & another parent of identified disabled; & a gifted minority employee teacher advocating for her students; & Latina parent advocates trying to support a principal in a racial conflict setting from their POV.

Sorry MBS, Weatheroy looks like a bureaucratic hack, which makes one wonder whether his ppb retired brother, now chief investigator for MCDA, is too

https://www.google.com/amp/www.nbcnews.com/feature/cold-case-spotlight/amp/sunday-marks-7-years-washington-girl-lindsey-baum-s-mysterioushttp://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=7966924&page=1-n599316No doubt there’s plenty more out there, but this was enough to generate my Qs.
    l) Blink never wrote on this abduction–at least it’s not on the index.
    Why?
    2) Nothing to speak of is written about mother other than she divorced and moved. Why from TN to a small town in western WA? family or friends as supports?

The town is located near I5, the corridor from Canada to Portland and Oregon.
There is a big RV park adjacent to town. One would think there’d be some SOs and transients.
So, I looked up RV parks Portland. There are plenty, including on the west river side. Were SOs in RV parks investigated wrt Kyron?
A l0 and 12 yo spent an afternoon in a friend’s pool? Was mother working? A l0 yo with brother (part way) walks after dark to a friends to solicit her to sleep over? Why didn’t mother pick up the phone instead? Why did the friend’s parents say no? What mother lets a l0 yo roam around after dark on the street on a Friday night with the excuse she has a l0 pm curfew. Why does the FBI have surveillance video from a Shell station right up on its official Lindsay Baum missing webpage? That seems unusual. (And why was the surveillance video of the Portland 7-11 of the parked guy who asked directions to the nearest el ed on 30 not of interest to them?) It seems perfectly obvious to me the man who abducted her was a local, even if a transient local, and it was a crime of opportunity. Why did Kaine and Kristi get apparently tight with a recent divorcee who apparently did not supervise her children very much up until l0 pm while Kaine lambasted Terri at every opportunity who was a supervising, nurturing involved parent? The only thing they seem to have in common is child abduction. Given the I5 corridor, could Kyron have been a followup abduction to Baum?
Most of all, why has Blink not published on the Baum abduction?

After Kyron was abducted, I wonder if any Skyline parents complained to PPS that policy and procedure was not being followed on June 4, 2010 and who knows how many other times? If there was no complaint procedure in place, where would those complaints have landed, the round file? Seems to me PPS is total mess. Where is MbS when we need her?

  21. erose says:

Rose, Not to speak for Malty, but she also wondered if Kyron and Lindsay’s case were connected. In two cases that are already statistical anomalies, how much more rare would it be if their abductor had no preference between male and female? Maybe Blink can enlighten me. If that video is the one I think it is, it is of a local (business owner, iirc) who was in that store on the night of, though originally gave an alibi he was not in town that night.

Apologies to all, I am way behind this week. My work balance is tipping the scale, lol.

I can’t speak from an analyst perspective re the possible connection between Baum and Horman wrt to further statistical anomaly because the true response requires the motivation of the offender (as one example). What I can say is that in sexually motivated non-family (pre-pubescent) child abductions over 90% of the victims are deceased (homicide) within 72 hours. I have studied some cases and literature that I feel are closer to “real data” than that stat- but I would not be allowed to publicly cite it. Part of the problem (as you point out) is that such cases (in relation to other crime) are indeed rare from a stat viewpoint. However, we have to consider an important factor when we analyze data- and that is – it does not include unsolved cases, or in many instances self-report info that is corroborated once received from an offender that is actually willing to participate.

In a 30,000 foot view what I am trying to say is that academically we focus on hard data. Check.
With much respect, it fails in comprehensive analysis, imo. When you have more “what ifs” than facts, it most certainly does not provide potential preventative knowledge, does it?

RE: the Celis case, does anyone find it weird that LE won’t say where they found her remains? They are still asking for tips, well if there was a tipster who saw something or someone at some point that looked odd near there, wouldn’t it be prudent to give at least a general location?

Rural Pima County is all I have heard publicly.
The location can be tied to the offender is the reason why it is not being released. There is a Celis thread, I apologize for not being able to link it at the moment if anyone else can I would appreciate it.

In my view, this is going to be another case of a missed immediate suspect due to LE inexperience and tunnel vision and there is concern of litigation I am told. I promise you I do not say that lightly or with smugness of any kind- I do not think we set up our detectives for success in terms of training in unsub child abductions and they should be funneled to the FBI CARD team in the first place.

I agree with your assessment of PPS Administration being inept. School people in large districts think that the students belong to them. They try anything that will shove the parents aside. The only way to fix this is to clean house regularly at the school board and the administrative staff. The people and parents are the one’s responsible for getting it done.

Who is watching the behavior of school administrations in regard to following state rules? I would say no one. Therefore, paperwork rather than actual inspection is probably what is going on.

The only thing short of locating Kyron I can see that would “get them off their dimes” is if Kaine and Desiree requested an FBI overview and recommendation meeting from MCSO after meeting with someone from the FBI.

I would offer that based on the last quarter LE activity of 2016, some that is known publicly and some that is not, that MCSO continues to fixate on Terri Moulton in such a way they have acted outside of the color of their agency and it seems to me- by virtue of the fact they know she is a represented person, to be doing so in efforts to get her outside of the presence of counsel. I am not suggesting her own behavior did not help them out in that area, but it does not give them permission to violate her civil rights and I have no doubt in my mind that eventually this case will involve a civil litigation to boot.

You know Blink, DDY’s case behavioral history posits she would welcome mcso acting outside the color of agency and across State boundaries to “break” her avowed suspect/enemy Terri, and thus would be leary of engaging or introducing an agency (FBI) who acts under color of law. So you’ve just highlighted to me why DDY has never wanted FBI to take over much less when she has great hopes of nailing Terri now with the CA cases. Someone in mcso (plus Tony affirming of course) has led her down the Garden Path. Kaine? inexplicable, except status quo means Kiara is All His.

I don’t think it is inexplicable- I think they have been told that the FBI does not agree with MCSO direction (as a loose term) and to expect some sort of negative outcome from transferring the case. IF they have been advised the FBI could take over the case at all. I have some reservations about their honesty with the parents considering some posts I saw (KM) around the time of Terri’s interviews. The “FBI” does not want to talk to Moulton that I am aware of, and I would I would offer I was told that directly. They have not been active in Kyron’s case in several years.

Good suit against any Judge appointing him, the Public Defender’s Office,
the DA who did not file charges, and the County imo.

  39. erose says:

Thank you Blink. My thought were that I have read statistically that stranger abductions are very rare, like under 1%, though as you point out it negates any “unsolved”. Then you have sexual preferences which are male, female or both. I thought both would be even more rare, but that is where I have found no data or stats. So there is limited hard data on sexual preference since one cannot trust the prep to tell the truth?

It is a true statement based on the literature and self report studies (very, very few and years old) that a criminal predatory pedophile who “abducts” based on sexual motivation who does not have a gender preference is the “rarest.”

Circling back to my original point on that- while that is a true statement, we are not talking about a criminal predatory pedo any longer- we are talking about a sexual sadist- this is where that “profile” lives in terms of study and real data. You may have read me mentioning this before in context- and once again this is only based on known stats- but the personality characteristics of a serial criminal pedophile are most closely linked with the predatory sexual sadist- it is my personal belief that Sandusky has many of the behavioral markers we look for in sadists. They do not always abduct and torture and kill- but the commonality is that the offender has “married” sexual arousal with violence (regardless of victim choice). That said- I am still shooting in the dark because I don’t even have an actual crime to attach an unsub to- this does not qualify as a profile-able offender under the standards for analysis.

KM seems to fit facts and evidence into her fantasies of tge Hormans and Kyron, and confabulating woukd nit be lying but just her construction consistent with her fantasies.

I don’t remember all Blink’s technical terms like paraphilias and what they mean, but I thought you differentiated between a sexual sadist aroused by a certain type from one whose sexual gratification stems more from the violence process itself rather than the human object. It seems logical the latter type would be less driven by gender in theprepubescent population. If Baum’s predator eyed her originally in the pool, one woukd think he was object (gender) driven, altho presemeably the pool and Friday night hosts had a girl of same age, so Baum’s aloneness walking presented opportunity. In Kyron’s case, SZ was take charge and created his own opportunity.

hadn’t, erose. tho seeing the commenter on Parry Ctr, abuse began after he left Parry Ctr and was in group home.
Both placements required a Court Order (disposition of a criminal or a neglect case). He would be in County care and the County woukd pay, not a parent. I think it most likely Murray repped him in a criminal charge and persuaded the kid to be grateful to his authority figure self for helping him escape juvenile detention (jail) and getting a probably short term mental health gig followed by a group home. Someone in the group home permitted him to visit Murray, so there was a nexus there as a trusted adult to the juvue system workers. I bet the DA didn’t file charges because it would bring great public discredit to the Public Defenders office for failure to supervise him. Probably he was allowed to quietly leave that job. If victims in Portland and “the investigation” referred to is investigated by Portland reporters (hahaha) Shrunk may make G Spanier look like a choir boy in comparison. This man looks like a Sandusky but much worse imo. no wife beard, no adoptions. no fun trips or games. no help getting into college. and so on. just taking care of him.

ot looks like one of the Portlanders was 1980, and Murray’s Seattle boy was mid-1980s.

So since the DA investigated, probably he just played the get out of town card.
When the Portlanders sue, I hope they depose the DA involved about
interviews with Murray. Hope the notes are preserved.

Soldier couldn’t stay a professional admin very long.
And the results of her experiment are in. a
pretty, tasteful picture of kyron yields 2-3 comments.
a hag pic of Terri with vicious speech promptly
    gets 10 times the comments.
