Missing Utah Woman Susan Powell: What Does Husband Josh Know?

Susan Powell

Salt Lake City, UT– The last person to see mother of two and stockbroker Susan Powell, 28, is her husband Josh.

MichaelPowellThat may be the extent of the information Mr. Powell is willing to provide the West Valley Police Department to asisst in their efforts to locate his wife; missing since the evening of December 6, 2009. Josh Powell is a relative of Michael C Powell, who ran for the State Legislature in Washington. Josh is listed as his technical advisor and creator of his website. Calls to Mr. Powell’s office to determine if Josh is his brother have not been returned.

After skipping out on a planned Interview with police on December 16, 2009 and hiring Salt Lake City criminal defense attorney Scott Williams: Josh Powell refuses to speak to LE about anything having to do with the disappearance of his wife outside of his already vague statements.

If your thinking everything you need to know is in the above interview, I agree.

Powell told police he took an impromptu camping trip with the couple’s 2 children at approximately 12:30am December 6th, leaving his wife home asleep.

When Josh returned to the family home at 6245 Sarah Circle on Monday evening December 7th, he learned that family members, coworkers, and the childrens daycare providers surmised the entire family was missing and called police.

Josh was reached approximately 2 hours prior to his return by a neighbor and friend of Susan’s, Tim Peterson. Peterson described Josh’s behavior as odd and unconcerned about Susan’s whereabouts.

Tim Peterson also noted that Josh Powell had the worst case of wind burn he had ever seen and severely red hands that he applied lotion to incessantly. Powell told him he took the boys to a remote part of Tooele County to test a new generator.

Police were called by Josh’s Mother amidst concern about the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Deputies broke a window in the Powell home to gain access and check on the families well being.

What they found, was a very large, wet area of a downstairs rug with 2 fans blowing on high, Susan’s purse, cell phone and keys.

Mr. Powell asserted he had no idea what happened to his wife, and the nightmare for both the Cox and Powell families, began.

According to to Police Captain Tom Mclachlan, Investigators took a sample of Josh Powell’s DNA via a sealed warrant on Tuesday December 16th, as well as other un-named individuals.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a source inside the investigation has confirmed to blinkoncrime.com that there has been blood evidence located inside the home, and DNA profile anaysis is currently underway to determine it’s source.

Post Pancakes Pup Tent

Seemingly unaffected by the fact that he had to work in a few short hours, the children had preschool and it WAS 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO, Josh Powell, according to him, felt this was a perfect male bonding opportunity with his boys. Per his statement, he traveled to a campsite in the Pony Express Trail Area, where the three of them slept in the family van.

Mr. Powell is a person of inerest in this case. From what I have seen, he is also, among other things, a dumbass.

With that in mind, I present the following working theory in the hopes it might progress this case and locate Susan Powell. Sadly, I am of the opinion that Susan Powell has met her end at the hands of her husband.

I do not think it will take as long, but I believe he will join the mothermurderers gang with recent inductees Jason Young, Brad Cooper and Christopher Coleman.

Initial Crime Scene

An Unknown Event, Resulting in Susan’s death, occurs at the marital residence. It appears to be spontaneous and unplanned due to the evidence found inside the home and the post offense behavior by the subject. A very large and wet area of carpet is located inside the home with drying devices intentionally focused on the area. It is implied there was an attempt to clean up the initial crime scene.

Secondary Crime Scene

The following are presumptive profile factors based on the limited amount of information in this case:

The subject is a non-organized offendor with limited crime scene and overall forensic investigative techniques.

The subject is operating a mini-van with 2 small children inside, presumably sleeping, containing either on, or inside, a concealment item of some kind.

While it was bitterly cold the early morning hours of December 7th, it was not snowing.  The ground was frozen and snow covered, however.

According to Tim Peterson, Powell told him he went to the remote Tooele County area. Following the fact that I can be sure, the one area that is nowhere close to water in that region is the one place he says he was; I can safely say I do not buy for a second he was anywhere near there.

Saratoga1In fact, I do not think he went very far at all. The critical piece here, is the generator he alleges he went to try out.

Two small children in a van, at that temperature basically means the vehicle needs to be running at all times or have an alternative heat source. Either way, they are running out of gas in hours or less, if it is to be believed he traveled as far as he did. That said, I am of the opinion the subject needed an immediate option.

Water.

With 2 children in a running vehicle, he would need to retain visualSaratoga2 contact.

He would need to have access to or know where he could gain access to, a boat. Potentially, he would seek a launch or marina where there were hotsprings feeding into the lake. He would know it was not frozen, and he would prefer it over the altervative in that weather.

Saratoga3Utah Lake water depth is an average of 9’. It ranges from 8’-14’, but it is notoriously murky, with a limited number of launches that have extremely easy access.

As you can see, easy access to launch as well.

LindonMarinaPavedTrailLinden Marina , which has a new trail, is also very close.

Today, Susan Powell’s family and friends began a social networking blitz in an attempt to generate leads in her case.

Hopefully, someone can confirm whether or not the “generator” is a marina version, or other.

Seriously, does anyone think this guy capable of excavating a grave in frozen ground?

I wish someone could explain to me how things in this country have gotten so screwed up?? How is it that it is ok for these people to refuse to talk to LE??? Our scale of justice has gotten so out of balance that it seems the only ones with any protection are the criminals.

I share your pain. That said, I realize their are flaws in our system of jurisprudence in this country, but imo, it is the best system in the world by comparison.

Just ask Amanda Knox. I am not saying I have an opinion on her guilt one way or another, as I did not cover the case, I feel that is inappropriate on my behalf. What I will say, is there is no way she would have been convicted on those charges in the US, under our due process system.

hey Blink thanks for doing a piece on this one can’t wait to get started on this story, my mother lives just blocks away from this family, we have been following this from day one and I will be interested in reading what you and all your peeps have to say about this one.

I totally forgot that was your “area”. Please let me know what she has to say, and of course, my regards to her on T.

    Joypath are you around?

I want to know how long it would take to test that carpet for DNA of the victim and killer? and also can they find out anything else from that carpet about the murder?

    Thanks ahead of time friend…….

  5. Word Girl says:

Way to go, Blink. I have to say that this guy wears his guilt on his sleeve. It’s a good thing that LE have sequestered the house to allow analysis.

I’m glad you offered an opinion on this case because that inevitably stirs up discussion and gets the attention of law enforcement.

To build the case takes time. Getting all the forensics in line, yes, but trying to find the body is also key. I hope the latest thinking on the dump site will bring us closer to justice.

Thank you for moving this case forward.

Thanks Word. I struggled with this piece as to whether or not I wanted to put my opinion on possible dump sites out there. I felt that strongly about his profile, and that this was going to turn into another Jason Young situation ( sans a body). I do believe this goon drove Susan’s babies with their deceased Mother in the vehicle and I simply want him in jail yesterday. It is rare that I will be this editorial in a case this new, but come on-

One thump for LE on this one, Josh Powell should have been under surveillance immediately. The van has been returned to him, so I am doubtful that Susan was not “in something” as I wrote, but since his story was he left her at the house and the got an impound warrant in the first place, they field tested the “wet spot” for hemo at a minimum.
Chris Coleman was surveilled from day one as he should have been.

I think LE in that case did a PHENOMENAL job and Coleman was a much shrewder criminal. That said, at least Josh did not harm his children.

  7. NosyParker says:

Hi Blink in your article it says “missing since the evening of December 6, 2008″. Was it 2008 or is that a typo and this just happened in December 2009? I agree if he has nothing to hide, why not cooperate with LE? If he’s not guilty, he would have no way of knowing what really happened and she could, although unlikely, be alive and his cooperation in the investigation could be crucial. How old were the children? I wonder if they witnessed anything and are old enough to be questioned. His whole story sounds hinky. Deciding to go on an impromptu camping trip in freezing weather, at midnight, with small children, on the same night that your wife “disappears” and then refusing to be interviewed by LE, is beyond suspicious. Another sad story involving the (probable) homicide of a young woman who leaves behind small children. I swear that Drew Peterson’s behavior and what he got away with, has led people to believe they can get away with murder if the murder victim just disappears. But that’s another story. At least he’s now in jail awaiting trial for his other wife’s “drowning” death in a dry bath tub. Unbelievable.

    Thanks, fixed it, 2009.

From the first second I saw Josh Powell’s interview above, there was no question in my mind.

How many of these idiots need to be paraded across the screen in cuffs. I still say Jason Young’s father should be charged with accessory after the fact. Maybe that is a step in the right direction?

GET A DIVORCE PEOPLE. Do not Orphan your kids and spend the rest of your life with 3 hots, a cot, and Mrs. Bubba.

  8. kyrasmommy says:

Cant they check the area of the carpet for blood, dna etc?

They have. Positive for Blood, thus the testing of DNA currently. I do not know the blood volume, though. It is my assumption the warrant precludes him from entering the house, or at least had until about yesterday.

It is possible the redness on his hands is from a potential clean up chemical (bleach). However, since nobody commented on a bleach smell, might also be wind burn.

Oooohhh boy, I am all over this case since I saw it on the news a few days ago. At last a case with real clues, crime scene (the rug) and a real suspect(as compared with Morgan).
Blink you said it all – does this interview leave any room for doubt??
Hey Josh, avoid eye contact much?? This guy is literally making up his story as he’s talking to the news anchor!!

    Josh – Duuude!!
Camping at 12:30 AM, in freezing temps? Oh yeah, my father would do that all the time when we were kids. Sure. Notice how when the news anchor tries to pin him down on EXACTLY where they camped, he stops talking and goes inside. S’mores?? Yeah Josh, how about s’more Bsh**t?

This guy has played one too many video games. As a psychologist, I’m watching his body language as he talks in the video. Notice that his mouth, face and eyes are all saying different things, in different directions. Watch that upper lip of his, in particular. Is it trying to smile?
Not once does he say “we miss her”, or “I’m worried about her” or any normal grief reaction. Of all the true crime books I’ve read over the years, the ones dealing with spouses killing each other are by far in the majority. And this guy exhibits all the classical symptoms of guilty – no facial expression, cold controlled manner, unemotional, phony personality, detached speech and manner, etc.

Well Blink, I’m getting my popcorn and front row seat to watch forensics take this guy down. Only a matter of time on this one.
Even Inspector Clouseau could figure this guy out.
To kill your wife is one thing, to kill the mother of your children is something else again and I hope this guy fries. God save his kids. I hope the grandparents can raise them well.

Happy New Year Blink…..There have been a number of cases where wives just POOF! go missing. Some not solved yet at all. A huge wet stain on the stairs with fans blowing on it? Hmmmmmm….. He goes camping in freezing weather with two very young kids? yeah ok now….Wives disappearing has become common place lately. Divorce is what too expensive? What is going on in this country. People killing their entire families, wives just fall off the face of the earth and pedofiles run ramptant. I’m not buying this guy’s story for 1 minute. He nees to think about his children and what he is putting them through, not to mention her family. So much evilness..I don’t know anymore Blink…Where is the justice for the innoncent victims? Yeah know, I always think about the first snowfall on the graves of my loved ones. Might have worked a little better if it wasn’t after midnight on a school/work day in freezing cold weather. Duh.

I just hope they find her soon. How sad, especially for those poor kids.

Yep. You will always find me quoted that sometimes criminals are luckier than smart. In general, it always runs out.

Depends on lab and status. Just because it might be her DNA, would not be enough to arrest him per se. The old bloody nose one time when she tripped, crap. 72 hours for straight analysis if they have a viable sample.

If they can establish volume, that may be another matter. He has already placed himself in the home up until 12:30am. I suspect that is why he is now living in Dad’s gated community in Pullyaup.

Great post Blink! Let’s hope law enforcement is checking all these possible dump sites. I know law enforcement confiscated Mr Powell’s cell phone and he obviously had taken it with him on this “camping” trip because one of the concerned friends was able to contact him on it the next day. If the cell phone was on the whole time law enforcement should be able to tell what area he was in those early morning hours through the cell pings.

I will be glad when this monster is behind bars and away from those poor children. Did he seriously think law enforcement or ANYBODY would believe he decided after midnight, in 24 degrees below zero temperatures he would take his sons “camping”. Then for him to not want to talk with law enforcement or even check in to see if they had any leads on just where his wife may be???

Now he is talking about moving to Washington State with the children? His wife is missing and he is going to move away from their home and not assist in any searches? I hope they arrest him before he is able to move those children out of state away from Susan’s parents. It will be much harder for them to gain custody or guardianship of them if they are moved out of state.

  28. dee says:

    What does Josh know? Everything.

  31. Susan says:

Utah is full of hiding places, especially for one who has experience in its outdoors. The good news is that outdoor enthusiasts are everywhere in that state. Josh looks scared and broken in the video. Here is my theory on this one: There was a report that Susan had a friend to their house for dinner and Josh cooked pancakes for them. Susan felt ill immediately after eating and went to lay down. My first thought when I heard of the wet spot on the rug was that she vomitted. IF he indeed planned to kill her with poisoned pancakes or in some other way, then something clearly went wrong with his plan. I think he wanted this to look like a natural causes death. Then he could be the poor sad mourning husband AND keep the kids all to himself. If he truly is as much of a control freak as most reports suggest, he likely had a plan. The plan probably went terribly wrong. Susan probably realized what he was doing and tried to call for help. I don’t think he planned on having to leave his house to dispose of a body. But he couldn’t leave the kids home alone, so, camping was about the best he could come up with.

You could be right as he corrected the reporter to say she was fine. I am just having a difficult time thinking this guy is smart enough to pull that off.

  36. Susan says:

I don’t think he had to use a high level of thinking to get into his current situation. Whether he killed her by planning or in the heat of passion, he clearly didn’t have a plan for getting rid of her body. So either he planned to stage a natural causes death but something went wrong, which is getting my vote. Or he acted out of passion and then had to clean up the mess. It will certainly be interesting to see how this unfolds with the DNA evidence. Thanks, Blink, for covering this.

Dear Dee, Please keep us posted on how things are going for your family. Are you in Germany and does that effect the law as far as your sister is concerned? I am praying for you and am truly concerned about your well being.

I am hoping they will find Susan earlier because of the aerial views and will have something definitive about the spot in the home. I would be frantic if I were her parents with grands in the hands of the father and out of state. People have said that she would never allow her children out in that kind of weather to camp. That she was a good mother.

Interesting about the wind burn and the bonfire–hadnt thought of that about the body.

He wont go to police w/lawyer to finish questioning, the doors were locked up-( do kidnappers safely lock the doors as a courtesy these days, who knew) & this man has yet to gather volunteers & call for a ground search. I would have every radio station summonsing volunteers with snowmobiles, & 4 wheel drives. I would be pounding on every door. Yet joshypoo has done nothing! How in the world do these friends of hers think she is alive & taken against her will & is very possibly out of state? denial does weird things.

I think they avoid a ground serach because they are afraid they just might find her.

Sometimes people do what they “know” in efforts to find someone because they are helpless otherwise.

In this terrain, unless there is evidence to support his whereabouts, I would not just launch a foot search randomly.

I would have a qualified recon team analyze aerials, any k9 evidence and seek those results first. Secondly I would analyze all the gas station/camping/convenience store footage and hope these items supported my perimeter.

But, ftlog, I would put out a pic and description of the van and the rental and broadcast them with corresponding dates in a effort to generate leads… If I was on the road in that timeframe, maybe I could pinpoint where..
That’s easy stuff, boggles my mind.

If the father was not consenting, could social services take action? (I think it would fairly be considered in the children “best interest to do so”.

I guess I was thinking of that little girl they found in Maryland 2 weeks ago- 3000 town people showed up to search & they found her in some remote area off the road.

His uncooperative part with police is disturbing. I read that he still hasnt finished their questioning & they want to talk to him more. You would think he would grab his lawyer & at least to that

This is just like Lisa Stebic- she leaves for a run – all her purse & keys there & they still have yet to find her- its so sad

I guess I am considered a “fellow Mormon” since I am LDS? The stereotyping that Utah is ALL Mormon and we all stick together is false. I live in the same area as the Powell’s and support him in no way shape or form. Not all our local LE are Mormon either. The only thing I want for Susan is justice and peace. And for Josh – even Hell is too nice a place for him!

I’m intrigued by the bonfire idea — could he have indeed burned her to dispose of her?

A four year old could definitely attest to the fact that they built a fire and had smores.

I’d like to know what was in that van of his that the police have already returned. Did they take a look inside on Monday evening when they met up with him? I would assume you’d need quite a lot of items to create a strong enough bonfire to burn a body. Or did he have time to unload prior to the police ceasing the van?

    oops I meant seizing.

So Josh is moving to Washington State? He no doubt knows she’s not coming home!! Mommy’s dead, time to move on. Dear Lord, the police need to move in on him quick.

OT, but response to comment on flashing ads. You can disable some/most of these in your browser settings. It’s worth it to me!

I use Opera. If I go to Tools, Quick Preferences, and then uncheck “enable animated images” it will stop the flashing of many, including the blue “this is not a joke” ones which are at a very irritating frequency for me. I can get rid of more by disabling other features, but then I lose some of Blink’s heading and other functionality in the posts. (For some strange reason, this does not seem to work on the green “this is not a joke” ads. Can’t figure that one, lol.) This is quick to re-enable if I need it again; just one click on and off.

Similar capability in most other browsers.

Hope this helps save your eyes and sanity; don’t want any blinking seizures, do we?

Lol. Blinking seizures- You SO opened a can.
    Thanks
    B

He did it (imo). He knows and he’s gonna crack. No way he can carry that on the weight of his shoulders AND look his children in the eye.

What makes him think he’s difference from Scott Peterson or other killing husbands?
