Friends and Family Concern Fuel Missing Ft. Bragg Soldier Kelli Bordeaux Investigation: Did Seeking Divorce And A New Man Cause Her Disappearance?

Fayetteville, NC- Ft. Bragg, NC- St. Cloud, Fl-

For those superstitious types out there, it came as no surprise that Friday the 13th yielded a tragedy.

PFC Kelly Bordeaux, an Army medic with the 44th Medical Brigade stationed at Fort Bragg, NC  had been “going through it”.

While she was away at boot camp, just about the two largest shocks to the system one can get, with no ability to do anything about, landed at her doorstep.

Kelli’s Father Paul passed away unexpectedly on Friday May 13th, 2011 and her husband Mike Bordeaux cheated on her with a mutual friends wife in the couple’s marital bed.

Kelli’s family and friends decided not to tell Kelli about her father out of concern it would hamper her ability to complete basic training- a move she made as a newlywed to advance her ability to train for work in the medical field.   A few days later she got the dreaded news.

While Kelli was at “basic” the knowledge that her husband Mike cheated on her and had begun drinking heavily caused her Mother Johnna to do some booting of her own.

Mike was given a one way ticket to California to return to his Mother’s home- and out of hers.

As Kelli settled into Army life, she decided to give her marriage to Mike another shot.

Perhaps her status as a soldier empowered her to think her increased level of discipline was transferrable via osmosis.

Mike and Kelli moved into an apartment in Meadowbrook and for a while the couple struggled to overcome the obstacles infidelity and Mike’s prior felony conviction for cocaine possession presented.  Mike worked a part time job in construction in Spring Lake while Kelli was on base.

Kelli realized that she married Mike as somewhat of a “transitional guy” after a long term relationship with a fellow St. Cloud man, Justin Thompson.  Kelli was committed to her career choice with the Army and while she believed he loved her, Mike was not ready for the level of responsibility she needed to support both her and their vows.

Despite his protestations to the contrary, Kelli asked Mike to leave their apartment toward the end of March, this time flying home to Kissimmee to stay with his Father and Step Mother on Cardinal Rd.

Kellli and Thompson began speaking again shortly thereafter. He came to visit her and stayed the weekend of another noteworthy calendar date- April Fools.

It was that weekend Justin and Kelli met the man claiming to be a bouncer at Froggy Bottoms Bar, Nicholas Holbert.

Holbert, a convicted sex offender classified as high risk was released from prison in 2009 after serving 7 years and 3 months for a combination of counts of indecent liberties of a child and causing injury or gross bodily harm to a 5 year old.

Holbert was arrested on April 21st for failing to register his move to a lean- to behind Froggy Bottoms and for driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle.  He is currently in Cumberland County Jail.

Also in the Cumberland lock up is Froggy Bottoms Bar owner Stephan Wayne Cantrell.  Cantrell told the press that Holbert did not drink and did not work at the bar- but would not give his own name.

Fayetteville PD quickly learned why.

Cantrell was arrested for a failure to appear on a DUI charge in 2001.

He was a man hiding from his past in plain sight.

Cantrell was living in a home with his girlfriend Mandy Rai Murphy, who is listed as the alcohol permit holder and owner of both Froggy Bottoms and Poindexter’s Saloon.

Cantrell is alleged to be behind over $400,000 in child support which he owed to two women in Massachusetts and his former wife Cynthia in Colorado.

He is awaiting extradition in Cumberland County Detention on a federal fugitive from justice warrant for undisclosed charges out of Boston.  A misdemeanor hold for worthless checks appeared on his VINE profile over the weekend.  His connection to Holbert is unclear outside of the fellow bar patrons that have been interviewed also believed Holbert was employed by Cantrell as a bouncer or some sort of security personnel.

Adding to the mystery who’s who quagmire that is Froggy Bottoms, on Friday April 20, a week after Kelli was last seen there, a man showed up claiming to be her Dad.

Described as 6’2” with 2 missing teeth, glass eye and a 10 gallon hat in the company of a blonde woman, the unidentified individual proceeded to interview bar employees and patrons.

Not Padilla- before the thought even glances your brow, folks.

Truth In Lending Healing

In the hopes that Mike Bordeaux would accept the couple’s separation as final and begin to assist Kelli in seeking an amicable divorce, she told him the truth during a phone call over the phone Easter weekend.

She wanted him to know that she had begun dating, encouraged him to do the same, but it was very important to her that their friends and family knew about their separation.  Although it was not reciprocated, Kelli took her fidelity to her husband during their marriage seriously, and she wanted it clear- she was no cheat.

Kelli told Thompson she had confiscated Mike’s key, removed him from their bank account, and they were headed for divorce.

“..We were very happy.  We were not headed for divorce..” –Mike Bordeaux

Not so- says friends of the couple who agreed to speak to www.blinkoncrime.com on the condition of anonymity. Although they HAVE shared their concerns raised during Mr. Bordeaux’s misrepresentations during several media appearances last Friday directly with investigators, they are not prepared to speak publicly in an open criminal investigation.

While Bordeaux originally stated he left Fayetteville to visit his family and purchase a vehicle, the source(s) went on to say that detectives recently told him they are unable to verify his whereabouts for portions of the weekend that Kelli disappeared. His Father and stepmother were apparently away that weekend.

BOC has been able to confirm that Bordeaux’s account shows that he purchased a vehicle while in the St. Cloud area checks out.  However, he purchased the truck for $1000 cash, and registered it solely in his name, on April 10.  Three days prior to the fateful and ominous 13th.

It did not occur over the weekend Kelli disappeared according to 1st Class Auto Sales in Orlando.

The maroon 1994 Chevy S10 is exempt from mileage declaration, but a source inside the investigation has confirmed that during a recent interview with police, the odometer reading was 385,000.  The last confirmed reading according to the VIN report in 2009 was 305,000.  The source also added that investigators questioned  Bordeaux about a request they were told about him attempting to gain access to Kelli’s bank account.  When confronted Bordeaux’s response was that “they had bills that needed to be paid.”

Bouncer OR Bounced Her?

Maybe both, maybe neither.

Holbert told Kelli he had to work as a bouncer the night of the 13th, but agreed to pick her up and drop her off.

Justin Thompson had tickets to a concert in the Orlando area that evening. He  and Kelli texted back and forth all night.

The last two known images of Kelli Bordeaux were texts she sent to Thompson from her home and from the bar, respectively.

The timeline of her texts, which have been obtained exclusively by www.blinkoncrime.com do not support Holbert’s public comments that the pair left after 1 am when Kelli announced she was tired and wanted a ride home.

In fact, it was 12:46 AM when Kelli texted to Thompson the word “driving”.  A few minutes later  another text asking Justin to call her ASAP, and then nothing again until the infamous “I got home safely call me tomorrow” text that nobody seems to believe was sent by Kelli.*

Thompson called her as soon as he got it but her phone went directly to voice mail.

Here is the problem- bar patrons at the “Bottoms” think the 1:20-1:30 AM timeline is correct.

Did Kelli think they were heading out but got waylaid?

Thompson was arrested on April 17 on a failure to appear warrant when he was interviewed by Osceola County as requested by Fayetteville Police . While he has had a few of his own dalliances with the law,  He has cooperated fully with detectives, was able to provide a verified alibi for the night Kelli went missing and is not considered a suspect.  Fayatteveille homicide detective Jeff locklear cloned the texts from his phone.

Thompson was also so concerned about not being able to reach Kelli the following day as her last text requested,  he called FPD.    Thompson was told she would not be considered missing based on the information he provided, she was an adult and he was not a relative which would be required to file a missing person report should one become necessary.  He called again on Sunday as well as a call to her CO at Ft. Bragg,  and a report was finally filed.

Justin Thompson and Mike Bordeaux have never met and while Mike was aware Kelli had begun dating someone, he was not aware he was now living miles away from him.

Bordeaux said in his interview that although he and Kelli were happily married with no problems, he did not consider the fact that the two last had contact at 3 PM on Friday April 13th,  and he did not learn his wife was missing until Monday Morning the 16th, odd.  He went on to say that he was busy visiting his parents with whom he had been staying with for weeks, and he felt Kelli was just “doing her thing.”

Bordeaux was contacted by the manager of the apartment building seeking permission to let police and Army personnel into the residence as Kelli did not report for duty that morning.  He gave his permission and headed to Fayetteville.

Police inventoried the home and located Kelli’s purse, car keys and identification.  Friends say Kelli typically only took her debit card and house key which she carried in her shorts pocket when she went out.  Kelli’s cavalier was parked in the usual spot, in the usual way, backed-in.

What he has also left out of public interviews is that he claimed to investigators that at approximately 1 am on Tuesday morning April 17th, he was awakened by a call to his phone from his wife Kelli’s iphone.

There was nobody on the line he says.  The husband of a missing soldier, his wife, calls his cell after over 12 hours of frantic worry by her platoon, family, friends and police and he waited to alert LE until the following morning.

He did however call her phone back and get her voice mail as everyone has since the early hours of the 14th.  Fayetteville detectives told Bordeaux it was some sort of malfunction- Kelli’s phone has been off since shortly after she was last seen.

When Kelli’s only brother Matt Henson arrived in Fayetteville the day after his and Kelli’s other sister Olivia Cox, Bordeaux was inside the apartment where he has remained.

Over the weekend, 500 volunteers arrived to help search for PFC Kelli Bordeaux. FPD  Lead Investigator Jeff Locklear  says new leads bring the focus back to the area.

No Soldier left behind is military branch and gender neutral.  They mean it.

I so want to know if Kelli sang that night at Froggy Bottoms.  Bar staff and patrons interviewed say she did not.

Maybe she did, privately to herself.

Private to Private.

I’m curious about the Froggy Bottom patrons who were interviewed. Did they seem willing to talk? Did they seem guarded when questioned? Were they protective of bar owner and staff? I wonder what really went on that night.

  3. Cindy says:

It seems the Husband likes to lie both to his missing wife and authorities. Why? What is he hiding?

I dont know if he was involved, but without question he has been lying about several things. We felt it prudent to present it as doing so is NOT helpful to a criminal investigation.

Also- her friends and family certainly did not want it to seem as if she was some party girl stepping out on her husband and I do not blame them.

Whoa…so many disturbing revelations, Blink & Jacqueline, thank you. Lying, cheating husband, my, my, my….what on earth happened to this young lady and where the heck is she? How did her brother refrain from beating the snot out of Mike when they arrived in F’ville, knowing all was not what he was proclaiming? And that glass-eyed freak sounds like someone inserting themselves into the mix like that guy with Holly Bobo’s family, annoying and wasting people’s time. So those interviewed @ the bar support Holbert’s claim of post-1 AM departure, after how many hours of drinking?! Guess not all of them had to be liquor-addled…So where does LE go from here, “new leads back to the area,” hmmm?

Wow…tremendous update, I can stop refreshing BOC every 20 minutes today ;) Hugs from NC

I am not sure her brother knew. In fact, I am pretty sure he did not, or if he did may have been advised that while it is concerning, may not be the investigative direction- which could very well be.

Good piece and fills in a lot of missing pieces. This is another case of a young woman who made some poor choices regarding men.

There are at least two in this case that need to be watched and interrogated over and over. If this woman is still alive, I will be suprised.

Wait, wait, wait…WHO is the guy with the glass eye? Claiming to be her DAD?! What in the world?

Dunno, and neither does anyone at the bar or LE.

Ok… the husband is the killer… am I the only one who sees that?! None of his stuff adds up. He’s a liar. His wife wanted a divorce & he wanted his benefits. He would be getting MONEY for her dying!!!! She was apparently through with him and was still in love with her ex, while her husband couldn’t accept it!!!

Lucy- respectfully liar does not necessarily mean killer, if that were the case all of us married ladies would be dead long already potentially.

His behavior is suspect, and it needs to be evaluated in the course of the investigation, absolutely.

God bless her for trying to become the woman she was meant to be. I supposed it rendered a threat to one or 2 cowards. I’m praying the obvious is revealed to put these sewage dwellers away for a long time.

….and $400,000 in child support? Dead beat parents are no better than Josh Powell’s. @$$hole.

The examiner reported that her most recently facebook activity was April 14, when there was a friend request accepted (a Cheryl Stawski Cibenko). Can you comment, Blink?http://www.examiner.com/article/kelli-bordeaux-mystery-continues

Holbert lived in a shed, but owned a car? Blink states: “Holbert told Kelli he had to work as a bouncer the night of the 13th, but agreed to pick her up and drop her off.” Assuming he worked that night at the Froggy Bottoms, where exactly did he pick her up from?

I wonder why she didn’t just drive herself that night? It makes me wonder if she accepted the ride from Holbert because she may have been somewhat interested in him as well. Did she just hang out all night at the bar alone until Holbert got off work, or was his bouncer work flexible enough that they enjoyed a lot of conversation that night?

My comment is do not read any articles that say examiner or the other non-pub that I cannot think of right now. If you scroll down, yikes.

He did not live in a shed, it was a lean-to tent thingy and the car is not registered to him as he is being charged with a phony registration and no insurance so I have no idea.

Ms. Blink, it wasn’t mentioned in your detailed update, but any more info/thoughts on the “bag with khaki shorts and bloody t-shirt” found around the lake that Holbert said he was shown by LE? Where would Holbert have picked Kelli up to go to FB, if he “thought” on return home she didn’t want him to know where she lived? By the same entrance to apts, maybe she didn’t want him to know exactly which one she lived in? Wonder if regulars to FB that night noticed any newbies hanging out? I don’t get the Kelli singing part, if it happened, that got her noticed even more than being a cute girl? Too many hinkies happening here!

Bless this family, losing their dad less than a year ago and most likely this vibrant, lovely daughter/sister/young woman as well. Local central NC news remains zip, nada, zilch on updates–they’re too busy getting the trash on the John Edwards trial, blech.

#10. Did Nick pickup any other patrons of the bar or drive them home? I know some bars in our area have arrangements made around special party events for rides to and from. Or had he befriended her? It is so easy to be mislead by someone who appears to be one thing and are not. Maybe, his story is true that he dropped her off before they got to her house??? Too many people with motivation to not tell the truth.

  16. mayhem says:

Did Thompson know beforehand that she was using Holbert as a ride to and from the bar that night? The text “driving” @ 12:46 seems to be something you’d text if YOU were the one driving. Stange text…not “getting a ride home” or “driving home”…just “driving”.

He did. She texted him that pic before he picked her up.

    B

  17. Jack says:

Was she planning to drink alot that night, and that’s the reason she asked for a ride to and from the bar? How far was the bar from her home? Do we know how long she was at the bar that night? Any evidence that Mike and Holbert knew one another? How much would Mike stand to collect in the event of her death? Could it be possible that he “hired” Holbert to do something to her?

There is no evidence Holbert ever met Mike, in fact Kelli had only met him a few weeks earlier herself.

I dont know that I could speculate that Kelli’s plan was to drink a lot- I can tell you as a point of fact that if I were out and was going to have even one glass of wine or cocktail, I would never drive- it is just a thing with me.

The time at the bar and the texts is perplexing, imo, it sounds just like I wrote, that they were headed out, and maybe something came up?

According to Google maps, you could drive from central Florida to Fayette-nam in 8 1/2 hours – all interstate. Realistically at typical I-95 speed, it would be a 7 hours drive. It would be possible for the loving husband to make this drive, have an incident, and then drive back. If he paid in cash for gas and never stopped for the night, the roundtrip could be completed in 16-18 hours, allowing for 2-4 hours in Fayetteville. It would be unlikely that Kelli would recognize the new truck he had just purchased. Since he no longer had a key, it is possible that she texted her JT with the “arrived home” message as she approached her apartment building (before or after being let out of the car) and then spotted her husband waiting by the door as she was about to enter. The husband has motive, and possibly opportunity, and NH’s story could be completely factual, BUT, we have no evidence MB actually committed the crime. And it is hard to completely ignore the RSO.

IF the husband was involved, her remains could be anywhere along the I-95 corridor (but most likely still in or around Fayetteville.

Once question comes to mind. Since MB’s key had been confiscated, how did he get in the apartment after she disappeared? Possibly apartment management let him in, but, if not. how did he get in?

Even if the husband is not involved in any way, the theories raised by your article would raise mor than a few “reasonable doubt” issues for anyone else brought to trial.

Her texts also suggest that something happened while driving. The “call me ASAP” is likely legitimate (who would fake something like that). This would be a strange text to send if you were being threatened by the driver of a car you were riding in. This is more consistent with a case where she sees a confrontation developing than an immediate assault. The one hour difference between cell phone text times and the time reported by bar patrons may be related to some time-zone settings on the phone.

The one-eyed man seems like something from an X-Files script and is probably unrelated to the actual case.

I fear that it is going to take hard evidence to convict anyone in this case, and regardless of who is charged/guilty, a good lawyer will be able to mount a decent “reasonable doubt” defense.

Oye. You went there. The “Nam” I am referring to.

You successfully plucked this chicken in one post- not surprising, but I wanted to acknowledge it because it is a window to the BOC blinktank.. ie: Do we or don’t we?

I am so fixated on “best chances for result” in my work I do not expect others from 30K feet to see the peeling of the onion, or plucking, as it were. In some cases, that is by design.

In a mp case, my priority is and will always be the location of the individual, and frankly, that looks no differently than a dude spinning plates (if anyone even does that anymore).

In Kelli’s case- we started out with a 48 hour sucker punch. In this area, and as you point out, the entire I-4 and 95 corridor that could be a very dismal outcome at best.

Your point about the key is important, except that we may not know- the apartment was opened by investigators when Mike arrived. He could have made a duplicate, and Kelli may have wanted to make a new friend comfortable while he was there- that would go under the “cannot be confirmed” category.

Here is my thing, and it is by design I discuss this in comments and not the piece:

Nobody believes that her last text, that she arrives home safe and sound- is from her. I will defer to those that know her best and assume they are correct- although I would personally want better verification so I did not exclude that possibility- it might mean something else to me entirely if it were her. For this exercise, lets assume it was not.

Because I have not released the exact verbiage of the text, for investigative reasons, as I annotated in the piece, I will not be offended if my thoughts on this issue are disregarded.

That text, if not sent by Kelli, is sent by someone who knew she was not home, but not someone who knew the individual when they sent it, imo.

Now, my little grandson two years ago when he was two would pick up their phone and accidently call me and another person just by punching a button.

I believe the killer called Mike. Don’t believe Nick would call him unless by accident. Maybe the killer had the phone and called himself and answer just so cops would know he was home. Not saying he is killer; maybe a child found the fun when killer threw it out and just pushed a person on the contact list.

You get a call in the middle of the night from the cell phone of someone you love who is missing and you do not think it is important enough to call someone immediately…I mean immediately! Does his phone actually show a call or is this just a mal-function per MB’s story. Where was he on the morning of April 17th when that call was supposedly made? You indicated he headed towards Fayetteville on the 16th. Could he have had access to her phone on the 17th to make the call to his own phone?
I am not saying he did that is just an observation. It only takes 9 1/2 hours to get from Kissimmee to Fort Brag. If the conversation on Friday the 13th, did not go well it is entirely reasonable to think he may have driven his new/used vehicle to her apartment…let’s say to discuss things in person. Just a side note but when I get a new car I can not wait to take it for a drive…just saying. If MB and his new/used vehicle was sitting outside Kelli’s apartment than it gives some credence to NH story that she wanted to be let out of the car somewhere other than her front door, then again NH picked up Kelli…did he pick her up somewhere other than her apartment?

I would like to dismiss the one eyed Jack claiming to be Kelli’s Dad as just a sleuth taking things to far yet it is strange that Kelli’s Dad is recently deceased and did OEJ know that and felt comfortable that no one else would be coming to the bar claiming to be Kelli’s Dad.

THIS IS KEY (and you know I’m not a ‘yeller’):

How did Mike Bordeaux get into Kelli’s apartment after “Kelli told Thompson she had confiscated Mike’s key, removed him from their bank account, and they were headed for divorce.”

And what the heck is this? Why not come out and say we think she’ll be found naked, so if you see her clothes or phone, Let Us Know!!

Police are asking anyone who finds clothing matching Bordeaux’s black shorts and dark pink top or her iPhone 4 in the north Fayetteville area to call 433-1114 or Crimestoppers at 483-8477. Do not touch the items, police said.

I have been following this case and am very concerned about where the
hubby was, since he lied.Very interested to see where this is going since
a SO was driving her around.Could there be someone else in the mix I wonder?Someone we don’t know about, just thinking out loud.It is obvious
her marriage was over for her.

  42. Sunshine says:

Is there a news conference tonight? I’ve been following this case since the beginning and I think the husband did something to her. I think that nick drove her to the neighborhood entrance and she saw her husband waiting. There was probably a confrontation and maybe he hurt and/or killed her on accident. I think he is using nick as a scapegoat and got lucky with nicks criminal background. But he is not going to be able to keep up with his charade. Where are his parents????? Are they involved with the search? WTH? It’s all very shady and tragic.

At the time of the publication, I could not confirm that any member of Kelli’s family had even spoken to Mikes.

  43. Sunshine says:

I think that’s weird. Don’t you? Im pretty sure if I went missing my in-laws would be or would want to be with my husband to support him and:or try to find me!!! I really think he did something to her and hopefully the detective is just collecting all the evidence he can get since they can’t find her to convict him.

  44. Word Girl says:

Blink, can you share the song Kelli would be singing?

    Soldier of Love, perhaps?

  45. ASH says:

Please find out when Nick got his car. I have a sneaking feeling it came from Florida!

Nevermind if you saw my earlier comment, I checked, we are good.

So I’m assuming Mike’s cell phone only pinged in Florida. I’d like to know if there was a long period of time of unanswered texts or missed calls to his phone during the weekend.

Surely there are traffic cams and other security cams along this route that could include or eliminate Mike as a possible suspect.

I think he did it and I sincerely hope LE is being proactive and smart in gathering evidence to charge him or clear him.

Furthermore, his truck should go through a thorough CSI investigation. There should be ZERO DNA of Kelli’s in that truck…they should also be able to tell if it has been bleached or cleaned.

Whoever sold Mike the truck should also be able to verify the mileage at time of sale, even if it’s not required by title transfer. Where did he buy the truck, if it was by owner, how did he find it…Craigslist?…could be an ad that had stated mileage. If from a used dealer, they would have the mileage information for sure as well.

  48. SouthernMom says:

It would also be interesting to know if any landline or other cell phone numbers accessed Mike’s voicemail during the weekend.

  49. SouthernMom says:

I would like to know if Kelli could see her driveway from the drop off point. Going with the idea that could see the truck in her driveway and realized it was Mikes I could believe she didn’t want her husband to see how she got home. This theory only works if would she have been able to see her driveway from the front of her subdivision. Also, would she have known what her husbands new vehicle looked like? Had he texted her a photo or described it to her? Hmmm…this would explain the call me ASAP text.

Kelli could not see her specific apartment or space from the alleged drop off point.

  50. SouthernMom says:

If…Kelli’s phone is off with battery removed it would not ping. If her phone was turned on for just a second to make that bogus “malfunction” call…wouldn’t it ping? I think I just figured out LE is onto something and quietly building their case.
