Morgan Harrington Murder: FBI, Metallica and Virginia State Police Ask You To Help Them Find Her Killer

Morgan Harrington disappeared from the John Paul Jones arena on October 17, 2009.  Morgan’s remains were located and recovered the morning of January 26, 2010 on the Anchorage Farm in Charlottesville, VA.

Reported exclusively on www.blinkoncrime.com,  Morgan’s alleged attacker was tied via DNA to a sexual assault in Fairfax, VA in September 2005.

With the help of a multi media campaign,  the FBI, Virginia State Police and Fairfax Police are asking for the publics help to catch her killer.

FBI Press Release:

Authorities Launch Multimedia Campaign in Morgan Harrington Murder Case
Murder Suspect Linked by DNA to Sexual Assault in Fairfax City, Virginia

FBI Washington June 13, 2012
  • Public Information Office (202) 278-3519

Today, federal, state, and local law enforcement launched a multimedia campaign that includes two enhanced composite sketches of a suspect in the 2009 murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. The unknown murder suspect is also connected by DNA to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City, Virginia.

Authorities recently enhanced the composite sketch created in 2005 from a description by the sexual assault victim. One of the composites shows the suspect with facial hair, as the suspect was described at the time of the attack. The second composite sketch features him without facial hair.

The two attacks were connected through DNA after a forensic profile was submitted by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science to the FBI’s national DNA database. The search found that the suspect in the Harrington murder investigation matched the DNA profile of the attacker in Fairfax City.

The multimedia campaign includes a public service announcement by Metallica lead guitarist James Hetfield appealing to the public to come forward with information concerning the Morgan Harrington investigation. The composite sketches of the suspect are being featured on bus shelters in Washington, D.C., as well as on digital billboards in Richmond, Virginia; Roanoke, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and in 23 other states along the East Coast. Social media outreach and alerts via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, along with a website dedicated to the Harrington case were also launched Wednesday. Podcasts are now available on iTunes, and radio spots are airing to further raise awareness of the ongoing investigation. The multi-pronged effort is designed to develop new leads and renew the public’s attention in the attacks. The campaign implements techniques similar to those that have led to the arrests of the East Coast Rapist as well as Ten Most Wanted fugitive James “Whitey” Bulger.

The Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Morgan Harrington’s murder. In addition, the band Metallica is adding $50,000 to the reward, for a total of $150,000.

Morgan Harrington Murder

On the evening of Saturday, October 17, 2009, Harrington attended a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia (UVA) campus in Charlottesville, Va. At approximately 8:30 p.m., she left the arena and was unable to re-enter the facility. She was last seen hitchhiking for a ride from passing traffic.

Harrington was dressed that night in a black T-shirt with the word “Pantera” spelled out in tan letters and was wearing a distinctive Swarovski crystal necklace made of large crystal chain links, which investigators have yet to recover. Harrington’s “Pantera” T-shirt was found on November 11, 2009, in front of a row of apartments along 15th Street, NW near Grady Avenue in Charlottesville. Harrington’s skeletal remains were later discovered on January 26, 2010, in a remote field on an Albemarle County, Virginia farm along Route 29. A camera that Harrington had in her possession that night has never been recovered.

Sexual Assault in Fairfax City, Virginia

On the evening of Saturday, September 24, 2005, a 26-year-old victim was walking home from the Giant Food Store located on the 3700 block of Jermantown Road in Fairfax City, Virginia. The suspect grabbed the victim from behind as she walked down Rock Garden Drive toward her residence. He then carried the victim to a grassy area behind a maintenance shed, where he sexually assaulted her. The suspect was last seen running from the area.

The suspect is described as an African-American male with black hair and facial hair at the time of the attack. He is approximately 6’0” tall and was believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35 years old at the time of the attack.

The public is asked to review this information and consider whether they know someone who generally fits this description, who lived or had ties to the area around the times of the assaults, or who may have been known to spend considerable amounts of time in those areas.

People who know the suspect may not believe that he is capable of committing these crimes. He may not necessarily have a violent criminal history. Because investigators are in possession of DNA evidence that can either positively link the suspect to his crimes or exclude innocent parties, citizens should not hesitate to provide information, even if it is just the name of a potential suspect.

The following agencies are cooperating in the investigation of these crimes: the Virginia State Police, City of Fairfax Police, University of Virginia Police, Charlottesville Police, Albemarle County Police, Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Virginia Tech Police Department, George Mason Police Department, and the FBI.

Law enforcement agencies are asking anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Virginia State Police Tip line at 434-352-3467.

TGF …I didn’t remember Norma saying that the girl looked pretty beat up, but your questions are good. I would need to go back and look at some of her statements.

  2. J.me says:

Here is one I saved : “I know what I saw, says Norma Parson, a newspaper delivery woman who believes she saw Morgan or an incredible lookalike coming out of a room on UVA’s West Lawn at 3:45am October 18, six hours after the last confirmed sighting on Copeley Bridge.

She was tall and thin, says Parson, who says the woman’s high black boots had heels making her appear taller than Morgan’s reported height of 5’6 and that she wasn’t wearing the black hose or tights police have described.”

Because the woman also was wearing a jacket that was fastened shut, Parson says, she couldn’t determine whether the woman’s blonde hair, which was tucked inside, was long or short. But as the blond woman¡ª accompanied by three young men, two shorter, one taller passed by her in the well-lit brick walkway along the Lawn, she says, she got a clear look at her face, and her heavily made-up eyes, in particular. She says the woman’s presence in the wee hours of a chilly night and her bare legs seized her attention.

I thought, What ¡s she doing out here dressed like that, Parson recalls. When she learned of Harrington¡’s disappearance two days later and saw photographs of heavy mascara- and eyeliner-wearing Morgan, I knew immediately it was the same girl I saw, says Parson, who credits art training for teaching her to examine facial details even those she sees in passing. I never had a moments doubt, she insists.

so the contents of her purse were :spilled out: ,as in ,dropped and spillt out ,not rummaged through. the only thing that might be missing is the camera ,if it was in there. and the umbrella ?where was that ? hmm.. i wonder if we will ever know the questions to some of these misreported and incongruent facts . foia? whatever happened to enquirer and the story of the “said male” who was about to be arrested ,as he allegedly gave morgan a ride somewhere and claimed to have dropped her off ,drugs were involved. i am looking for those posts.was enquirer talking about the rumored local claiming he picked up a blonde hh ,which turned out to be false.

Redly you are right on about Annapolis as they were there for the Fall Ball. I know Blink’s theory regarding an attempt by Morgan to get into her car however given the location and the time provided for the theft I doubt it could be Morgan if we accept that report at face value. The OCC time suggests that whoever had their purse stolen stated it was stolen between 5:38 and 5:55. Morgan would have had provided that time when reporting the incident. Something has to be wrong about that report for it to logically be Morgan. However J.Me made a interesting point about the caller being misunderstood as saying The Park when she really meant the parking lots. If the location is wrong then it could have been Morgan. And since I am suspicious of everyone I can’t help thinking that such a report provides a nice alibi just like the assault report. Especially due to the location of the UVA police department and the quickest route from  there to JPJ.

ATGF I don’t think it was Parsons who said the girl looked beaten I believe that came from one of the hotel sightings. Parsons sighting is described here http://www.readthehook.com/69512/missing-pieces-witnesses-share-their-tales-morgan-sightings

Also there were 13 requests in October for medical assistance and all are suspended. If they had arrived on scene and found no one then it was have been listed as unfounded. Here is the definition give on the LE site for suspended “Suspended
Case has no solvability; no suspects or witnesses or the case has been closed.”  Given the classification option for the reports suspended would be the only accurate option.

I respectfully disagree that it logically was not Morgan. The occurrance matches the time they arrived at JPJ, and the call was suspended, which could also mean it was found that the reporter had the wrong location, as in, the call was responded to, but either nobody was there, or some other form of update.

If Morgan was impaired, how would it be logical to think she remembered the name of the correct lot or articulated it correctly?

Do we recall Corrine Geller asking all to respond if Morgan used their phone, and VSP knows her phone goes dead at 9:30? The call is her purse and contents, which also matches the fact that Morgan was missing some items from her bag, whether she realized or actually dropped something- She was dumping her purse upside down more than once, and their were a few witnesses to that- What if that was her realization that she did not have her keys, and no longer a working phone, and this was her way to get into her vehicle? It was cold, it was raining, she was “out” with no way back in for the duration- to me, this is logical. Her friends were trying to get her to an “open area” when they KNEW she was not getting back in. That sounds like Morgan asking to get her keys she could get in the car.

Perhaps she conveyed her plight to an RMC staffer, who is normally stationed in the lot.

..” I saw her that night, I wish I could have helped her..” ( or was it helped her more)- name withheld by blink.

I go back to Amy’s sister’s comment about the fact the friends were shocked when they came outside and saw her car sitting there. (or words to that effect).

This is also congruent with the Granny sighting. ( I emphatically believe this was Morgan based on the large gold earring comment alone- I have seen these earrings, in a dimly lit area this is exactly what would stand out to someone). It also makes perfect sense as to why the disparity as to their recovery with VSP some time ago when I was pushing the issue.

The smack she heard is also likely to have been Morgan’s purse with the phone inside, or the phone itself- maybe during a conversation where she was reporting the purse so the call became suspended?

All this commotion, and as I have pointed out, VSP has categorized her as in severe distress with no LE intervention and Morgan’s alleged refusal of all offers of help? But wait, a bball player said she asked for a ride.

At the point of that exchange, are we to assume she then knew she had no chance of getting in her vehicle and knew her friends were not going to be able or willing to do the key hand off?

My point is- logic, if that is the benchmark, it has to tell us all these things cannot be true at the same time and be considered logical.

Morgan is believed to be the second known victim of a suspect who attacked a woman from behind, rendering her unconscious ( this is a critical element to this person’s skill level and I cannot underscore that enough. In the investigative world, we call this offender a choker- that refers to someone who has this understanding, and one that moves to tasing) He removed vic 1 from the scene, and did so under deft cover. He waits until she is almost at her destination ( could be he was hesitant and this is an early vic or drug related or he was not as familiar with the area and could not figure the way to cut her off). Most importantly, he assessed his risk up front. He engaged her, for all we know he saw her in the Giant, she could have been wearing something identifyingly muslim, and assessed that she would be minimal risk in his mind, to report the offense based on his perception of the cultural stigmatis or perceived bias we are all very familiar with.

Why is this a consideration? Because 5 years later his victim is a 5’11″ ( yes, I know Morgan is 5’8″ but in those boots she is a very slender and very tall woman to be a “mark”) caucasion with long blonde hair.

I know everyone thinks that serial rapists have a specific “target”, but while it can be true in rarer cases, it is definitely not a given, and with only 2 known verifiable victims to date any profiler worth their salt will tell you it is not enough to go on- hell, the term serial ( which I believe is sound) is even a stretch.

In which case, LE needs two profiles and had to be working them simultaneously.

As we know, second to the crime scene, and that would include all of them if more than one ( I do believe Morgan was deceased when she was dumped on AF, so their is at least one more and imo a vehicle) is the single most important forensic tool in identifying an OFFENDER.

The second most important aspect of a criminal investigation is the victimology study. With more than one victim, we then compare the two. What is the same and what is different?

    1. Both women were (real or perceived) in need of a ride.

    2. Both women articulated publicly their intent in some form or another to walk somewhere.

    3. Both women (real or perceived) had a need.

Who can add to this list?

    * As a probably completely unrelated “aside”. Mr. B and I were out several months ago on a rare date night when we ran into an old chum of his he had not seen since grade school. He was a true crime enthusiast and was asking me all kinds of questions about cases, etc. He was a reader of BOC, so it was a bit uncanny to say the least. ( I say this for those who believe there are no such things as coincidences). He told me that many years ago, he got a DUI which was expunged from his record, but as a result, when he goes out now, he hires a driver. This man literally lived 3 blocks from the place we were, and went on to say, if I go out for a few pops, I call the driver, he picks me up, and he takes me to Whole Foods, I do my weekend marketing, and he drops me off.

You can see why it stuck in my craw.

Was there some connection in this way with the first encounter? (we do not know, (at least I do not know) anything about the first girl. Is she even still in the country? I think not…..is she in Pakistan? Was sketch a mark? (we know he did the first attack….I guess) Where is this thought going? Right back to my first original thoughts about a blitz attack by persons well trained in such events (I did not say smart) I said trained.
Is this some kind of revenge.????? why did Gil call Morgan a sacrificial lamb?

  7. A Texas Grandfather says:

I am just thinking about the reason Morgan appeared to be avoiding the police or any type of security while traversing the parking lots.

Could it be that the person who tore up her event ticket told her that she was out of control and she would be arrested if she didn’t leave the arena? I think that LE did not do a thorough job in interviewing those working the arena.

Why should those who traveled in Morgan’s car be suprised that it was still on the parking lot? She obviously didn’t have her keys. Even if Morgan tried to get a security person or police officer to use a “slim jim” to break into the car, without keys all she could have done was to get inside out of the weather.

  8. alexandra says:

He must be someone who just looked for an opportunity to attack a woman from behind because the FF victim and Morgan look very different. His DNA has yet to show up anywhere else. Ahh, thank you! I remembered Rader saying he wanted to use it in Morgan’s case. I wonder why they have such a hard time with the timeline, they stick by it, and they used this technology and they didn’t have any results….? How could the CT10 verify the timeline.

Blink, is it possible that LE might have the image of someone using Morgan’s debit/credit card, but isn’t publically releasing it because they believe Morgan is alive, and doing so might alert the perp – possibly causing him to sever his connection to her (to avoid charges of anything other than using a stolen credit card)?

What are some the general reasons why LE would be hesitant to release this kind of info in a case like this? Also, do you think they have proof that her card was used at the Sheetz station/store in Orange, but, without surveilance footage, have no way of knowing who used it?
    blinks response in bold :
I doubt they have someone’s image using it. Imo, if they did, they would make that arrest and then question the subject as if he had no idea who she was. That said, I would be willing to bet cash the attempted or use was in Charlottesville.
    B

so ,her card more than likely was attempted to be used ,as rumored, but still is open the possibly that she lost it ,some random(or not) person finds it and tries to use it.interesting. on another note , certainly the bands crew is loading out for a while after the concert ,and a clean up crew definitely is on hand to the start the clean up ,or shows up ,after hours,or wee in the morn. to clean the inside of the auditorium ,cou;d sketch be connected to the clean up crew?

no data the card was used.

  11. A Texas Grandfather says:

Looking back on Blink’s comment about the blue phone possibility makes me question the functions assigned to the Blue phone system and how the calls are answered.

If this goes directly to the UVA police dispatcher, it would make sense. If it instead goes to another central site manned by students, without a direct link to police, it is a worthless system. Telephone equipment today is not that expensive and with computers embeded in the system there could be voice data recorded.

  12. Leelee says:

ATGF according to the UVA PD site the calls automatically connect to The police department and there are over 400 on campus.
I apologize for the LE space the next posts will take but I don’t want to take anything Blink said out of context! Quotation marks will be around her statements and a dash will signify my response.

“I respectfully disagree that it logically was not Morgan. The occurrance matches the time they arrived at JPJ, and the call was suspended, which could also mean it was found that the reporter had the wrong location, as in, the call was responded to, but either nobody was there, or some other form of update.”
-Blink if the call was responded to and no one was present then the appropriate title according to the UVA reports would be “unfounded”.  However we have seen that the reports aren’t always accurate.

“If Morgan was impaired, how would it be logical to think she remembered the name of the correct lot or articulated it correctly?  ”
-If Morgan was that impaired it would be likely that if she could not remember the name of the lot but it also would the be equally unlikely that she could provide such a specific time which does match the time of the arrival. Someone in such a state would be more likely to say around six instead of between 5:38 and 5:55.

“Do we recall Corrine Geller asking all to respond if Morgan used their phone, and VSP knows her phone goes dead at 9:30? The call is her purse and contents, which also matches the fact that Morgan was missing some items from her bag, whether she realized or actually dropped something- She was dumping her purse upside down more than once, and their were a few witnesses to that- What if that was her realization that she did not have her keys, and no longer a working phone, and this was her way to get into her vehicle? Her friends were trying to get her to an “open area” when they KNEW she was not getting back in. That sounds like Morgan asking to get her keys she could get in her car.”
    – I thought the open area attempt was based on the group incorrectly believing the smoking area was on the entry level when it wasn’t therefore she couldn’t sneak in there.Getting keys from the friends would have been fairly easy. It would have required Morgan waiting near an entrance on the outside where someone inside could see her. Then the friend could have just went to a nearby employee and said,”Hey could you please hand that blonde girl standing there these keys?” Or they could have dropped them down to her from the smoking level.  And if she wanted to go to her car suggests she wanted to ride back with her friends then why not just buy another ticket as she had available money on her card according to her father. If she only wanted to get into her car then why did she follow the basketball players and ask for a ride? An attempt which would have been futile if Morgan couldn’t remember the name of the lot. And if she made it there she probably wouldn’t have remembered where in the lot the car was parked if she had no idea what the lot was called.  If she was that inebriated tcomedown did she come up with the idea of making a false report in order to gain access to her car?

  13. Leelee says:

Perhaps she conveyed her plight to an RMC staffer, who is normally stationed in the lot.”
    – which lot?
“The smack she heard is also likely to have been Morgan’s purse with the phone inside, or the phone itself- maybe during a conversation where she was reporting the purse so the call became suspended?I”
    – Again according to the UPD ” suspended “would not be the appropriate term for a situation like that.If it was in the bag then whose phone was she using? Would she not use her own phone if she could? Having to borrow a phone suggests an awareness that her phone was not working which means this occurred after 9:30.  If she did borrow a phone for that call then that person would need to have been near granny, Morgan and the young man she struggled with. Granny would have to have not only missed that person but also have missed  her returning a phone to that person as the incident ended with the pair walking in opposite directions then the young man turning around and following the girl. If she used her own phone then it would mean there would be a record of that call on her phone which would have led the police to take Granny more seriously. The girl also would have had to call 911 because she wouldn’t have known the number off the top of her head for the UPD. That means a 911 hangup would be in the system for that incident. Also if LE is so certain she got into a car on that bridge then why do they think she tried to borrow a phone after 9:30?For her to be seeking a functional phone would mean her killer had yet to take control of her. I hate how LE theories and statements often clash in this case. LE has the unfortunate habit of saying one thing then contradicting themselves a few sentences later.
“At the point of that exchange, are we to assume she then knew she had no chance of getting in her vehicle and knew her friends were not going to be able or willing to do the key hand off”
-If her friends knew they didn’t give her the keys either unwillingly or because they weren’t using their heads then why are they surprised upon seeing her car? And at what point does she end up on the bridge? If the bridge occurs before the smack incident why did she leave the bridge and quickly encounter that young man; whom Granny seemed to believe was someone familiar to the girl? Why did she go from hitchhiking to failing  to get in contact with police to then heading back towards the arena? Granny stated the girl headed towards the arena so if she was heading in the right direction.Did she get into a car somewhere other than the bridge which would have been opposite of the direction Granny described for the girl as she walked away. And who was driving that car? Was Morgan unlucky enough to have gotten away from one creep only to meet another? A creep who had to have been watching her if we assume her bag was later planted.
Blink is Granny’s story significant to you because it not only punches holes in the LE timeline but also because the young man is suspected to be either a suspect or accomplice? Also where do you think Morgan was ambushed?

without keys all she could have done was to get inside out of the weather.

That would be the first thing I would think to do. If I were locked out in the rain, I would have tried to break in to my own car just to sit and wait out of the weather. I would not have told my friends, “I’ll get a ride” I would have asked them to bring my keys to the door and throw them outside to me so I could wait in MY car…..did she have a destination in mind…(?) LE won’t say where she asked BBP to take her. WHY? If it’s so case sensitive, why haven’t they made any progress?

  15. Judi says:

Although I never met Morgan or her family, I myself am amazed how imbedded into my heart they all are. I truly care about these people that I do not know personally and have never met in person.

I personally believe Grandma’s sighting. Surely they have shown her Sketch’s sketch….wonder if she felt it was the same person that she saw. She said it appeared Morgan and him knew each other. How in the world could Morgan have known Sketch?

One of two scenarios of how Morgan got outside – She either was ejected from the concert, and the person who did so ripped up her ticket (I lean this way) OR she went outside to meet someone (grandma sighting), argument occured, HE ripped up her ticket……Again, how would Morgan know Sketch and why would she go outside to meet him?

I believe Morgan was a mixed bag of emotions out in the parking lot. I think she was MAD at her friends and UPSET about being ejected from the concert she had been waiting for months to go to. And, probably buzzed, either of her own doing or from being slipped something (unfortunately, something that is becoming more and more common)…

Never have, never will believe the hitchhiking. Think the curtsey was nothing more than the getting ready to pee the pants dance. Also. don’t 100% believe the BB players story as well. Find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that a college aged male, let alone a GROUP of college aged males, would not be willing to help a tall blonde beauty such as Morgan.

What I don’t understand, what I will never understand, is how this guy is flying under the radar. How many people could possibly know the AF area as intimately as everyone says that he must have? How could no one recognize him?

WHEN will justice be served for Morgan Harrington?

  16. Judi says:

    One more thing….

When I think about all that we know about Morgan, the future she had in front of her and the good she would have brought to the world, when I think about the kind of people her parents are, how big of hearts they all have, how truly good to the core this family is, how violently she died and what he put her through, what she was feeling from when this aweful spiral of events began inside the concert until she took her last breath, it FRUSTRATES THE HELL out of me that justice has not been served and this guy continues to get to live his life, free as a bird.

This whole thing makes my heart break.

Her so-called friends did her SO wrong. They 100% could have prevented this. That is fact. No, they couldn’t have predicated or known what her fate was, but they could have not let her go off alone and once finding out she got outside and couldn’t get back in, they could have left the concert. After all, it was her dad that bought the tickets and it was her car they went on. Seems the least “friends” would do, without thinking twice about it. And, let’s not forget their party so shortly after, the one where the pictures that were posted on facebook.

Your question about the c10 machine and the time line is a good one. My earlier post describing the equipment was written in a hurry as I was committed to a band rehearsal.

Since that post, I have reviewed the material about the C10 and have a little better understanding of its strengths and weaknesses. IMO there is no way that the C10 equipment can create or verify a timeline.

Its principle purpose is to take photos of a scene in 3D while at the same time producing a great many (chosen by the operator) points of measurement. With the software in the laptop, it can create some variations of a scene for playing “what if”. The measurements are accurate and apparently the software is able to move the “view point” so that one can visualize what would be seen standing at another place. There is an antenna on the housing of the portion mounted on the tripod. I am asumming that it is there to connect to GPS signals.

I think there is an error in the spec. sheet regarding the computing equipment and operationg system required. The CPU chip requirement is for a chip that is ten years old and the operating system is Windows XP or Windows 2000. None of this is available or supported by their vendors at the present time. Makes me question just how new the software is to produce the visuals.

I too feel your frustration. Young people for one reason or another are not experienced enough to make proper choices for personal safety. There are a lot of people who are no longer considered young that make some of the same mistakes. Most are able to survive such an error, but this did not happen in this case.

We have a big job to do as a caring society. In my childhood and youth, people looked after one another. Parents ingrained proper behavior into the young men and women. This is no longer being done. Unless the whole of society participates in such activities, everyone is exposed to danger.

We have a drug culture that affects our youth with damage to their bodies and brains. It also breeds criminal activity of assault, robbery, rape and murder.

–Frustration for me is again setting in….

So – 3 years later we are now certain that Morgan Harringtons cell phone was found INSIDE her purse which was found by LAX player on the grassy area possibly near a fence and contents were described as “spilled out” – and other personal items were described as “scattered” her id and debitcard were also said to be inside the purse-…and we know there was an umbrella- was this nearby- inside or “scattered”?

    These reports had it right
    Roanoke
    Cosmo article
    CNN
    and
    Examiner

    snipped:

UVA police contacted her parents at home in Roanoke the morning after the concert because someone had found her purse in a parking lot near the arena. Almost everything was in it, including her cell phone, and other personal items were scattered nearby. In a different setting, a dropped purse might signal foul play, but it was a relatively routine Sunday morning discovery on a college campus (especially the night after a concert), and UVA police saw no signs of a struggle.

Harrington’s purse, with her identification and cell phone inside, was found the following day in an overflow parking lot near the arena, police said. A friend had driven Harrington’s car to the concert, she said, and was still in possession of the car keys when they got separated.

Harrington’s purse, with her identification and cell phone inside, was found the following day in an overflow parking lot near the arena, Geller said.

All other reports only mentioned finding a purse and a cell phone
near- with- by- along side-in the area- or completely separate- in the street- in lot- etc… most reports were vague

    Blink first wrote up the find as;

    snipped:
Unfortunately, the best evidence in this case was not discovered as tied to a missing persons case; Morgan’s purse, wallet and cell phone found the morning of the 18th were given to local Police as a property recovery.

Police never said the words “inside” at least not live on tv or in written summary- the info is merely attributed to them- As so much else in this case-

    Is it verified IDK

-AS Lee Lee opined “LE has the unfortunate habit of saying one thing then contradicting themselves a few sentences later.”

IMO this case and all known info is confusing and ever changing one time info we took as fact, seems inevitably to move on over into the unverified column… LE with its “tenitive” timeline- verified timeline= no timeline- shirt find- not Morgans is Morgans …purse dropped by Morgan yet may have had it on bridge etc..all frustrating

LE IMO arent the only ones who have had trouble keeping info verified Sadly The Harringtons have shared info that later changed, the friends, and – Blink too have shared info that changed or later turned out to be wrong..

Unfortunately I do not think very much is an undoubted fact in this case and even if LE has facts- and seems to share them- I think we cant know for certain thst they are verified facts…..
and that is probably a good thing IDK/

So in truth we cant rely on info as LE may be touting misinformation in an attempt to help the case -such as why is debit card info sensitive- when Morgans debitcard was said to be found with her purse…how does that make sense for the theory that she left behind the purse cell and cards inside herself- and yet her card may have been used after 9:30???????

and some of LE’s omitted info seems to be withheld inorder to help UVA- such as not divulging the BBP – instead using language such as with not with- students…etc…

and why not divulge where Morgan asked to go? LE stated that they leave it up to the players if they want to comment or not—well if they comment, what do they think reporters would wish to ascertain regarding the limited interaction between Morgan and players?

They state they do not have a timeline yet they stuck to the timeline as if it is a life raft- it is the same tentative timeline they have always had- many didnt have watches yet they are certain the players were gone at 9:20 and Morgan was already on bridge then inorder to be spotted by F/D…

    Confusing

Morgans cell it seems must be useless by 9:20 pm- – BBP are gone by then Morgans cell phone back is found in the lot…lending credence to she =herself having dropped it there on her trek WITH players to the lot-

LE believe Morgan HH because she was without her phone- it was found inside the purse- the purse they say she dropped-possibly before HH… the purse phone sans battery INSIDE- found back in grassy area… battery ,they say was lost most likely due to MH dropping the cell and the tendency of the battery to fall out on its own… back found in plot lost on MH trek

when did she lose the battery?

LE knows when the phone went dead- why dont they release the time?

Was it before 9:20 before HH or wasnt it? Did Morgan Harrington disappear HH or did she manage to make her way back to the lot and lose the battery then… Did she then drop the purse with cell INSIDE at that point?

Why do LE state that Morgan HH because she didnt have a phone and say she could have had her purse on the bridge yet the purse with CELL INSIDE is on the grassy area back in the lot off the bridge where they are certain she entered a vehicle and Morgan never doubled back according to the LE and the dogs….???

Either they know or they dont…. either the dead time bolsters their theory or it doesnt

Was it before 9:20 before HH or wasnt it?

Did BBP witness Morgans cell battery being lost? were they aware they were stranding a injured out of sorts- in need of a ride.. wobbily intoxicated- young woman in a back lot alone without a working cell phone?

Why not state they know when Morgans phone went dead?
Why not state ifrom the beginning- without hestation- that Morgans cell was found INSIDE the purse-

why choose to speak vaguely and allow wrong info to be repeated again and again in so many articles-
why not release a fact sheet with the info?? especially since it bolsters their reasoning IRT a purse a cell no signs of foul play— may have wondered off etc theory?

Why not release the time Morgans phone goes without power?
The deadtime can negate or bolster their timeline and their theories why not release it?

Can LE please release a fact sheet- is that possible?

Sorry for length thanks for letting me vent

Seriously what are the odds that “Sketch” doesn’t look like his picture? The only person who can identify him is a victim who doesn’t (or at least not that well) speak English who was sexually assaulted and beaten very bad in the pitch dark. The FF victim was attacked from behind maybe she never really got that good of a look at the POS.I def think this is a very good possibility, and would explain why he’s flown under the radar since being linked to Morgan’s demise.I really hope I’m wrong on this, but with HSTNG putting billboards up and down the East Coast there aren’t to many more reasonable explanations.I would say he’s either gone far away or looks nothing like what we are looking for.If he did fly the coup hopefully it’s to CA where they enter(I’m pretty sure they do this now with a new law being passed like a year ago) your DNA when you get arrested.Hopefully other states(cough, cough VA) start to follow Cali bc a guy getting a DUI in Cali recently led to him being extradited back to PGH on a murder warrant..

I have to agree with you and I have stated that I SUSPECT the original sketch was derived from the witness that interrupted the crime, or from folks that may have had a suspect in mind. I don’t know when his DNA was put into CODIS for the 2005 assault.

I think the updated sketch and re-release is the attempt to abate any issues as a result.

I am aware of a murder/rape case where the DNA match was actually made from an out of state warrant for a felony that ended up being dismissed in the “home” state of the offender. It would render the state that the subject was arrested in to abide by that state policy, which was to destroy the DNA sample and not maintain it in CODIS.

In TN, it also takes a court order to submit the sample to CODIS outside of a conviction, so it was really a clerical error all the way around and had the guy had a decent criminal defense attorney, he would have had that evidence suppressed and walked free. He did not, lost his appeal.

Point is, our courts may be on the upswing with giving more rights to the victims that the criminals.

I have to agree that we have so many conflicting pieces of information to try and logically put together it leads us in an endless circle. To bad it is not like a volute where there is a beginning and end to the circular forms.

This reminds me of the so called “pristine bullet” in the falsified Warren commission report concerning the assination of JFK.

While this may upset some, I said this at the beginning and I still believe it is true that some things have been falsified in order to protect UVA from liability.

Agreed. No doubt in my mind. I also believe UVA and UVA PD has not turned over or ommitted information they may have pointing to liability.

Mom3.0 I’m with you. Very frustrating and an inability to understand why LE doesn’t come out with the facts. 3 years later and what are they doing? ARE they conducting an active investigation? With so many discrepancies, didn’t they go back over the information again and again? WHY aren’t they doing more to solve this case? She asked the BBP for a ride. WHERE did she ask to be taken? LE let this case go cold. Why didn’t they do more work? Why would Lt. Rader retire right in the middle of this investigation? IS THERE an investigation? Are we the only ones sick about this case? (sorry for venting)

So the best this maching could do would be to verify that indeed the limo driver could see what he said he saw from where he was sitting. The same with the curtsy duo.
If I could ask the limo driver a question, I would ask him at what point did you stop watching Morgan, as she walked off and you lost visibility? The same question to the curtsey duo. Is the parking lot so big that you lost sight of her? Isn’t it a flat area? Or did the rain cause poor visibility?

You have the basic uses of the C10 for LE. However, there are additional things that would help forensics in regard to a body or objects within a crime scene.

The other thing is how powerful is the light gathering ability of the camera? Is it functional in a rainy or high moisture environment? The amount of moisture in air directly affects the ability of the human eye to see long distances. Humidity at 85% or more can reduce it to a mile or less. At night, with low humidity, one can see 150 miles if you are at a high enough elevation.

When humans look at an object or a scene such as a parking lot, the eye transmitts the information via the optic nerve to our brain. Our brain may get every detail, but our cognative sense is dependant upon our knowlege and experience to recognize what is there. People with good training are able to “see” more than others. This is the aid that the C10 machine provides because it captures all the lense can record, humans are able to take the time to study in non-realtime what is actually important in such a scene.

  28. A Texas Grandfather says:

The scary thing about withheld or false information from a LE agency is have they destroyed it. If not, how would another agency that suspected such activity, force the release of it?

Under Virginia law, could the agency performing the investigation go to a court and get an order to make the UVAPD or the University release the information?

Thanks for the link to the job advertisement. Is SMG a prime contractor or a subcontractor for arena services? There is the E-mail address that indicates use of the UVA network facility.

This also raises the question of has the civil lawsuit by Morgan’s estate created a change in the event operator for JPJA? Or, is it the same group operating under a new name?

The original contract for event operations was RMC. They operate in a lot of venues around the state of Virginia. It is possible they even operate in other states. Most of their employees are probably part-time with only area managers a part of the full time staff.

There is no indication that this job adv. requires a uniform furnished by the company or by the applicant. Also no indication that any type of background check would be performed.

  30. susanm says:

  31. A Texas Grandfather says:

Thanks for the links susanm. If SMG is as large as their web page indicates, there is the possibility that RMC lost the contract at UVA for one reason or another and SMG got the contract. We don’t know if food or drink is a part of their services or if they provide security services. I would be a little concerned about the Stocton, Ca. contract since the city declared bankruptcy.

One would need to have the original RMC contract to determine just what services they performed at JPJA.

I used Google Earth to search for telephone service at UVA with A T&T as the service provider. There was a huge number of hits on the main campus. Some of those had to be the blue phone system. The area across 29 busines where all the athletic facilities and JPJA are located show just a few and all are located inside buildings or a fenced facility. There is the possibility that the student handbook has a listing of all the blue phones and I will check that next if available on the web site.

If the blue phone system is leased from AT&T,it probably uses a small sub-switch of the smart system 7 family. This should be fed to a dispatchers video console that would show the location of the phone as soon as it goes off-hook.(off-hook means as soon as the handset is lifted).

I have also spent a lot of time looking for cell phone towers in the vacinity of JPJA with zero results. These towers have a unique antenna system that should make them very visible if they are there.

When SMG was here in PGH they were in charge of the Civic Arena/Mellon Arena and the Pittsburgh Penguins had to pay SMG rent. When the Pens had their financial problems in 99 they were Millions in the hole to SMG.They payed SMG and pretty much ran them out of town.IN 2000 we built PNC park-baseball,Heinz Field-football.Then in 2010 the Consol Energy(voted #1 indoor arena the last 2 years) Center opened-hockey.I would say today SMG runs quite a few arenas/stadiums in this country. They usually do it by cities where they can handle more than 1 arena/stadium.They try and handle all aspects of the facilities from ushers, food services, arena maintenance etc…The only time this is an issue is when they are in a union working state. For example VA is a right to work state so they can hire whomever they want.In PA it’s a Union work state(which is how it should be;yes I’m biased bc I’m union) so the indiv who change the arenas and stadiums are union workers who usually work for allegheny county. All food service in every stadium prior to the consol being built used to go to Aramax. The Consol changed that here(thank god)bc the food is amazing anything from sushi to a hamburger.SMG is nothing special they are just a big ass CO. who run the day to days of arenas/stadiums.

There has been no turnover of operations. SMG handles physical aspects of JPJ. RMC Events, a different company, handles staffing. It has been that way for years — since long before Morgan was killed. Plug the below link into the wayback machine if interested in seeing for yourself. SMG has been handling those operations since the arena opened in 2006.

The answer to whether an investigating agency could compel UVA and UVAPD to turn over info under Virginia law is “yes” — except for attorney/client and attorney work product materials. However, it will have all been turned over already. Nothing will have been intentionally destroyed — which is the sure way to actually create liability that probably would not have existed in the first place. Even the soon to be felons at Penn State weren’t dumb enough to destroy their e-mails (though one of them did try to hide them — something that always backfires in the long run).

The suggestion that UVA or UVAPD may not have turned over info in order to shield the university from liability reflects a misunderstanding of Virginia law. Whatever one may think about suggesting that people are immoral criminals without presenting evidence to support such a claim, the potential liability of UVA is and always has been very very low. First, UVA probably still enjoys Sovereign Immunity, though that concept has been muddied in Virginia recently by the Virginia Tech shootings cases. The State could be sued under the Tort Claims Act, but even if the suit were properly brought against the State or if a court decided UVA could be sued directly under the Tort Claims Act, any liability would be capped at the greater of $100,000 or the available insurance coverage. In addition, I have posted the Virginia contributory negligence info before but it would make any regular negligence claim almost impossible to win in this case. Finally, the statute of limitations has passed — unless some tolling agreement has been reached. I suppose RMC would have more reason to hide damning info, but I expect that they have turned over what they have been asked to turn over by the police also. It would hurt them more in the long run of they haven’t.

I just watched a vid with the Harrington’s being interviewed by a female judge followed by a panel of lawyer’s and Mark Furman.I am appalled by what LE told Gil during “Morgan’s missing” stage. That Morgan would be “found by hunters when the leaves start to fall”. WTF is that? Did LE really want to find her? or maybe they really wanted this case to just disappear from the beginning.I don’t care who agrees with my next comments and who disagrees,so I’ll type away and if I catch some shit for it so be it..

I’ve said from my very first posts on here(around a year ago)that Morgan not being on vid screams cover-up.I still stand by that.Who would be incharge of the vid?SMG or RMC?RMC is in charge of the ushers, security, tix takers etc..If Morgan’s tix really was ripped to pieces mixed with no vid makes one wonder.Did Morgan really fall? Are there actual witnesses who saw this girl fall?Perhaps she was assaulted inside;hence no video. Then once people realized that when she went outside and was a victim of foul play bye-bye vid. There was probably 24hrs gone before VSP even tried to see footage from the 17th.

Then there’s the T-shirt.Found in what NOV?But only released how many months later?Sketch’s blood on the T-shirt along with Morgan’s DNA?The T-shirt finding is only made public after the students were gone? There’s a reason if you’re a guilty student not to return to UVA.How are we even certain that sketch looks like his pic and that the DNA really is sketch’s?BC that’s what LE tells us?LE really hasn’t been truthful at all(it seems)during this case from item’s found/missing,location of items, phone calls,texts,rides..LOL,I’M done off to work I go…..

Just an fyi, the monitoring although I have never been able to determine the storage media at the time, is conducted and the responsibility of UVA PD.

Judi I also don’t 100% believe the basketball player’s stories. It isn’t that I think they are involved it is that I think a lot of people involved in this case lied because they may not have been on their best behavior that night. However I can imagine the reason the players would have turned her down is because they would have had it pounded in their heads over and over again to not put themselves in compromising situations with drunk female strangers no matter how pretty they are. Especially after the Duke lacrosse fiasco. Plus the coach of the team has very strick moral guidelines and ethics which he demands that the team follows. He has had no qualms getting rid of excellent players because they broke his code. Hence two players were off the team shortly after Morgan disappeared. One returned and the other did not. The player who did return was finally booted from the team his senior year yet again for violating the team’s code of ethics. I’ve often thought that the post Morgan suspension may have been caused by the alibis provided by the players. Like they may have been drinking/ partying etc. I also wonder why one players was not interviewed. Did he park elsewhere or did he not attend practice that night? And why did Morgan go from refusing help close to the arena to asking the players for a ride?

  40. Leelee says:

In regards to BP3  and Blinks comments about Sketch I actually can see why many doubt that Sketch looks like his sketch. His victim did see him before the attack. I wonder how long she was aware of his presence before the exchange occurred where he told her was waiting for a friend. I can envision someone in such a situation not looking too closely at the face of a perceived threat in order to involve engaging that person. By the time the attack actually occurred she was fighting for her life and may not have had a clear view of his face before she was choked out. The Hook article (link provided) describes the victim as the only eyewitness and that Sketch was startled by a passerby. However according to another article ( link provided) the person who startled him never actually see his face.He could hear what was happening but didn’t see it. Once  aware that someone was looking for the source of the struggle Sketch dragged her further into the darkness . When the neighbor didn’t stop trying to find the source of the commotion Sketch fled. Given the darkness and the likelihood that Sketch had his back to that person both during the attack and while running off his victim was probably the only one who saw him. There are three issues which cause me to wonder about the Sketch: the trauma the victim endured, the language barrier, and race. The violence of the attack left the young woman so disoriented she accidentally went to the wrong door. While the memory of her attack was intense the details may have well been effected by the deprivation of blood and oxygen to her brain. If that trauma could cause her to forgot something as big as where her apartment was then a fresher memory of Sketch’s face may have also been affected. She also was not fluent in English and was more comfortable describing her experience in Urdu. Obviously translators were likely provided. She likely described him to her translator who then told the sketch artist. Getting an accurate sketch is hard enough when everyone involved is speaking in their native tongue and a language barrier makes it even more challenging. I speak three languages other than English so I know firsthand how difficult it can be to understand what one person is saying and then finding a way to best put it into the language of the other party in a way that is accurate and clear. That requires me to not only understand the literal translation of the words used but it also requires the altering of sentence structure and a knowledge of the euphemistic and colloquial meaning of words that often vary. The situation is even fuzzier when you consider the difficulty people have in identifying an unfamiliar suspect of another race. And I doubt I amthe only one who often sees a person after their arrest and think they bear no resemblance to their sketch. Certain features are often entirely off. For instance the sketch of Richard Ramirez has totally different eyes than how he actually looked. So different that if I had seen Ramirez walking down the street I would have ruled him out as a possibility. The same goes for the son of sam,Heribero Seda, and the grim sleeper. I’ve attached a link to a gallery showing the  killer beside their mugshot. With that being said, the Sketch  shouldn’t be ignored because it is the clearest description we have of a man who committed two violent crimes. However one reason He may not have been turned in as a suspect is that he doesn’t look enough like his the sketch to warrant a person turning him in as a potential suspect.

OK that makes sense. So now my next question is -as I typed on 9/2 from what I read- UVA PD answers to the UVA ADMIN and not the Commonwealth of VA? If that’s how it really is,and from how screwed up the evidence is from 10/17 (meaning there’s no definitive answer to a lot of questions) can you with all of your experience in your career,Honestly say there’s a snow ball’s chance in hell that nobody erased, destroyed,or messed with the video’s? I don’t know Blink, but I’ll tell you this much I don’t like it; not one bit.Especially when LE agencies were known to do some shady shit on that farm while on duty.I realize it maybe a stretch and all,but this very well could be one of the reasons why the timeline has gaps. You have to figure there was around a 15hr head start before the Harrington’s got a phone call.

This is why my brain seems to grind,lol..Now the flip side of the coin (to me) says if shit was being covered-up the FBI would have caught it don’t you think? Or maybe if they did they wouldn’t have shown their hand until they had concrete evidence? Even if-purely hypothetical- say UVA PD/UVA were covering something up VA PD would sit on it as well until they were a 1,000% sure.Hopefully they have somebody in mind and are just waiting until they are certain they can get a murder conviction.I just hope this get’s solved in my life time, but more importantly I hope it get’s solved in the Harrington’s life time…

Redly, Thanks for posting phone locations. But I still think Morgan would call from a cell. I remember wondering why the question was asked, “If Morgan borrowed your phone, please come forward.” I also believe if the stolen purse report was suspended, and if it was Morgan, the reason for suspension would have been confusion as to which lot she was in. There are several lots next to fields around the arena area.
And Blink (“Just an fyi, the monitoring although I have never been able to determine the storage media at the time, is conducted and the responsibility of UVA PD. B”)…precisely where problems in this case may have started….

  45. redly says:

I honestly don’t see how anyone who thinks it through could really say the problems with this case may have started with the video system or monitoring. They have nailed down essentially her exact location and interactions for a whole hour after she left the arena. No one sensible thinks she wasn’t in the arena before she left. Maybe you can say that the video could be useful to the civil case, but any suggestion that it had anything to do with either her rape and murder or the difficulty in tracking down sketch is frivolous IMO.

I would be surprised if LE doesn’t know the number that made the call about the stolen purse. It could be untraceable of course. I don’t think it had anything to do with morgan.

Thanks for the phone map Redly. The UVAPD portion of the UVA web site was going to be my next stop. The map shows three blue phones along the front of the parking garage North of JPJA. There are also three along the sidewalk South of the arena and one each in the parking lots immediately West and South of the arena.

They must be mounted on a light standard. Even with the improvement of Google Earth, they are still using older images and everything begins to loose focus at 250 ft. above the surface. Therefore, the phones cannot be identified. The newer system with better images will allow focus down to 15 ft.,but it hasn’t been used on smaller communities. The general street or surface view has not been activated for Charlottsville.

    Thanks for the link susanm.

Two young women not knowledgeable about behavior in big cities. She was very, very lucky to survive.

The area around SMU was at one time a very safe and well kept part of the city. Now, it is an old area that has been surrounded by low end rental properties and the people who occupy them. Today, I would not walk at night in that area without my pistol.

Maybe I am and old guy with values that don’t match those of our young people, but I think two young women walking a street at 1:30 A.M. make themselves a target for the thugs that roam for such an opportunity.

When that van pulled over, they should have run back in the direction of the house where the party was held. Telling her story may help others to not make mistakes about nighttime adventures on foot.

I believe that Morgan’s missing necklace is in some young womans jewelery box as a gift from one of the perps.

Redly says, “I honestly don’t see how anyone who thinks it through could really say the problems with this case may have started with the video system or monitoring. They have nailed down essentially her exact location and interactions for a whole hour after she left the arena. No one sensible thinks she wasn’t in the arena before she left. Maybe you can say that the video could be useful to the civil case, but any suggestion that it had anything to do with either her rape and murder or the difficulty in tracking down sketch is frivolous IMO.”

Respectfully Redly, I don’t recall anyone saying that the problems with the case started with video systems or monitoring. (Though they could potentially be helpful). I think the comments preceeding your last post refer to UVA PD…that the problems with this case started there, with that entity.
