Dr. Phil Show Hosts Missing Portland Child Kyron Horman’s Step Mom Terri Horman Over Two Episodes

I have been covering this case since Kyron Horman disappeared from Skyline School in June, 2010.    Like most missing persons cases I have covered in the past,  I am of the strong opinion that best efforts at the truth are the only way to propel investigations that, similarly to Kyron’s, have gone cold for one reason or another.   This approach has worked in resolving some of my previous cases.    I am proud of that.  I remain steadfast to the integrity involved in those and future cases.

Over the past 10 months (or so) I have been developing an updated series on Kyron’s case to include my multiple interviews with Kyron’s step-mom,  Terri Horman.   Needless to say as she was the subject of at least three simultaneous cases before an Oregon court and remains a person of interest by the agency investigating her sons disappearance, this has been an arduous and sometimes delicate journey.    Ms. Horman’s experiences during the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Kyron Horman are critically important to propelling his case and with great hope- finding the truth about what happened to this cherubic and innocent child.    There are dozens of sources,  collateral interviews, forensic experts and legal analysts that also contribute to my series and have done so because of their belief that my motivation is to bring to light information and opinions in such a way that would almost “require” a focused review of Kyron’s case and the likely shaking of that proverbial tree everyone talks about.

Set to publish about 6-ish weeks ago I was asked to postpone the first installment of the series, which I did.  I subsequently learned Ms. Horman was participating in the Dr. Phil program after she completed taping.  Dr. Phils producers were well aware that Ms. Horman had interviewed with me extensively, and anticipated my series would be publishing information that was not known to the public previously in the days prior to her scheduled episode.    When Ms. Horman conveyed to me that she feels obligated to speak out about “her son” in any national medium that will have her,   I most certainly respected that.  I still do.

While Dr. Phil seems like a gregarious fellow for sure,   I have zero interest in being associated with his program, nor do I believe his shows content is designed to do any furtherance of investigation or truth.  There is much concern (although I have no affiliation to the show whatsoever) that the timing of the publication of my series on the Kyron Horman matter might be interpreted differently or inadvertently contribute to the programs content or audience reactions.     Not what I signed on for.   A missing 7 year old boy six years running is not a framework for entertaining a target audience.   He is not fodder for online social media bully campaigns- yet it occurs.

I will be publishing my series on Kyron’s case at a later date, in it’s entirety with no editing adjustments as a result of any of the appearances on Dr. Phil.   I appreciate your patience and your understanding.   Feel free to discuss the show below.

O/T @erose, you made me curious. My first thought was perhaps employed at Lawrence Lab in Livermore, CA. All three of those elements show up here, but who welds in tie? Is it possible DB owned a machine shop, working with piston engines?

    (57) Abstract:

Usage: hardening welding of aluminum alloy of the most loaded areas of the individual parts of modern machines, particularly piston engines. The inventive aluminum alloy include silicon, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, titanium, Nickel, cerium, strontium in the following ratio of components (wt.%): silicon – 5,0 – 18,0, iron – 1,0 – 8,0, copper – 1,0 – 3,0, magnesium, 0.5 to 2.0, manganese – 0.5 to 1.5, titanium – 0.1 to 0.3, Nickel 0.5 to 10.0, cerium – 0,05 – 3,0, strontium – 0,05 – 0,1, aluminum – rest. The ratio of strontium to the amount of iron + Nickel is about 1 : 160 to 1 : 20. We offer alloy allows for 30 – 50% to increase the life of parts. table 1.

The invention relates to the field of metallurgy, in particular to the field of creation of welding wires based on aluminum for wear resistant surfacing, with the aim of strengthening the most loaded areas of the individual parts of modern machines and, in particular piston engines.

The Boeing 727 was the main aircraft in many of the major airline fleets during the time of the Cooper crime. Cooper or whoever he really was had to know about the rear exit to the aircraft. I don’t remember if it was he who lowered the exit staircase during flight or if he had one of the flight attendants or someone else do it. I don’t even remember the yellow tie that was found.

The universe of people who knew of the rear exit is not limited to those associated with its manufacturer. All these planes were maintained in various shops around the country which often were not by airline employees, but third party contract people.

The metal particles found on the tie is a strange thing. Mechanics and other working people would not wear a tie while doing work around machines. The risk of the tie getting caught in a piece of work or in the machine itself is too great. It is a big safety no-no.

However, a production engineer, may leave his office and go to the factory floor to check on the progress of a new part being machined and in that manner the tie could have been exposed to airborne metal particles.

My other question is the real ownership of the tie. Suppose that the tie was borrowed to wear on the flight. In those years, people did not wear leisure clothing or workman’s clothing on airline flights, they wore business suits and dresses.

Since the jump from the aircraft was done at night, it was not possible to follow Cooper’s progress visually. In order to survive, a jumper would have to know of the large amount of wake turbulence from the wings and fuselage. This would indicate a person who was familiar with the use of a parachute and would not deploy the chute until the turbulence was no longer present.

Law enforcement would have to know of all these things and more to try and determine who this person was. That is where a good investigative team would let the public know certain things in order to get new input or call on experts in other fields to help them find the unknowns.

Using welding rod of a particular type for hardening wear surfaces is common in the drilling industry as well as engines. In the 1940′s, the man who lived across the street from my grandmother ran a welding shop for rebuilding the surface of drill bits used in the oil fields. Roller bits built by Hughes Tools would wear on the cutting surface and this process would restore the original surface material.

Tungsten carbide is one such material that is often used.

  11. erose says:

o/t I think those “Citizen Sleuth’s” alluded to the tie belonging to an engineer or manager, thou ATG you made me think of a borrowed tie. The welding is interesting, TRuth. How productive of them to ask for public assistance albeit 45 years later. We are a part of Kyron’s informal “Citizen Sleuth’s” and I would imagine there would be many more if only MCSO would reach out to the public. Will it take 45 years?

The issue of not engaging the public regarding SZ rests solely with MCSO.

I am interested if mcso even attempted to go back and trace by interviews of those present SZ’s progress thru and activities in the building?

As for failing to work with the public and supplying SZ detail, imo
with what coworkers have revealed re Staton’s 6 yr tenure, that
failure goes back to Staton’s alleged paranoia, authoritarianism, temper tantrums unpredictably,
alleged threats to employees from Moore down, and so on. The ultimate failure is the local

I was windering how WW shut down so thoroughly all reporting about tge mcso investigation. Tge best consoiracy theory is Staton had something on the Meekers harmful to Ellen AG’s politucal career he in his mercurial way threatened to reveal. Therefore imo a WW investigative reporter likely had been questioning Staton/mcso about SZ.
When it came to tge story series driving Staton from office, iirc Hacquiss/WW gleefully took the lead and drove the train, but iirc, Jim Redden of the PTrib was first. So, in looking his career up, I found this interesting piece of work:
    http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-4189-1990.html
Apparently when WW (having been sued) put constraints on Redden, he founded his own paper and took his investigative series away: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDXS
    ——
The parents in this story seem behaviorally typical wrt a missing murdered child: exhausted their own savings and retirement. Gave up everything including jobs to hold police’ feet to the fire. No Gofundme or Foundation. No mentoring others. Just a complete focus on their kid’s investigation.
    —–
Redden is very very good. I would love to know his research and opinions on Kyron’s investigation, and on why WW completely shut down its coverage.

  18. Rose says:

If one googles jim redden terri horman, nothing by him til an Aug divirce hearing when she of course didn’t soeak, but in June–the 17th–one finds the Tribune (J Anderson) documenting a deliberate press conf in which Jason Gates calls specifically to dispel the rumors someone other than Terri was the last to see Kyron. He specficalky puts out disinformation to reporters Terri was the last to see him:
    http://portlandtribune.com/component/content/article?id=31624
Why go to these lengths on that issue, Captn Gates?
It looks like Redden was wholly uninvolved in Trib reporting on this case that summer.

  19. Rose says:

    link above
“There was one new piece of information: ‘Terri is the last-known person to have seen him before he disappeared,’ Multnomah County Sheriff’s Capt. Jason Gates said, contrary to previous reports of someone else who might have seen the boy afterward.”
Reads like between June 4 to 17 there were multiple reporters aware someone else had been seen with Kyron after Terri. Captn Gates, on Staton’s orders, shut that down, invoking the family to get buy in.

Why’d the bios cooperate with this disinformation campaign?

  20. Rose says:

the Trib was useless on case facts wrt kyron it seems.
Redden did a Valentine’s Day Feb 13 interview with Desiree and imo bonded.
J Anderson was reporting in 2010 because she had their PPS beat and had been to Skyline previously, according to an autobiographical article (on herself) she put out for the 2011 June anniversary, also a mother’s pov. I can’t find either Trib articke but read their excerpts elsewhere.

  21. Fwiw, in a general sense, cases are defined by admissible evidence. Therefore, almost equally important to the integrity of that evidence is its chain of custody. I have my doubts the tie passes muster in either area. That said, the forensic analysis value is fascinating.

  22. It may Rose, I can’t say that definitively without knowing the case actual status.

  23. I would have to say I do not have specific knowledge on the circumstances of that issue. I don’t speak for her, but based on my conversations with her I don’t think she would deny she has lapses in integrity.

  24. Rose , if memory serves Staton corrected Gates in a later interview. I don’t know if Gates comments were part of an investigative strategy or Intel he believed to be correct.

  25. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Rose

The statement from Gates about Terri being the last person to be seen with Kyron was an attempt to misdirect the investigation away from something that he knew would point to bad behavior within the LE community. In that regard, he was successful even though Statton may have made a corrective statement at a later time.

If, the investigators had used their gathered information at a point say 60 days out and re-interviewed all those in the original interviews, they may have found some new leads towards solving the case. Not only the general behavior of SZ, but how he spoke and the rhythm of his speech that someone in the interview group picked up could have helped.

If I hear someone speak for a short time, I can identify that person by those patterns without seeing them. I do that all the time and is a skill that I have used since I was a youth. While that is not a common skill, there are bound to be multiple people with similar skills. School personal who teach should have a similar level after working for years with children and parents.

  26. Rose says:

    How’s the poor foot?

The entire purpose and content of Gates’ June 17 statement per Anderson was to dispel the rumors someone else was seen with Kyron. To do so, Gates stated Terri was the last known person to be seen with him. The only way Staton could correct that would be to state Kyron was seen at school with someone after Terri left. that is. return to the rumor. acknowledge SZ.

  27. Rose says:

Jurors in the Larry Hurwitz case (link above) reported their job was much harder bcz PPD so badly bungled the investigation and the evidence initially. It was due to Redden’s pressure over years he was brought to justice.
(It seems to me in kyron’s case he and the Trib bought Desiree’s storyline.)
What mcso did not do was bring together the public that was present at the Fair–and those associated with the school ie groundskeeper, janitor, cooks, employees missing that day–in an adults only assembly meeting at Skyline to track SZ sightings and activities that morning. And they misled that Skyline school and neighborhood group and 2 family Court judges that Terri was responsible. That’s worse than failing to involve john q public imo.

  28. Rose says:

Pitkin documented Hurwitz’ release in 2008. there’s no article just a picture as far as I see: http://www.wweek.com/portland/blog-7986-starry-night-killer-larry-hurwitz-released-from-prison.html

What if a reporter like Bernstein, Terry, Pitkin, Jennifer A, or Redden had tweeted a solicitation in June 2010 asking a DM response for all photos and videos from SciFair?

What if Reporter tweeted Kyron had been seen by witnesses in a K/1 room after Terri left at X oclock and who else saw him there with whom?

What if mcso did that June 4 or 5?

What if June 5-7 mcso tweeted out their known and asked for a specific sighting and location like Farenthokd did?

Coukdn’t interfere with an investigation going nowhere anyway and a child missing.
    ——
on reflection, Pitkin did not play an investigative reporter’s role. His role was aggressive interviewer with a family group. No one played investigative reporter.
    ——
on 9/1/10, Redden blathered on as much about his Moreau / Hurwitz case as Horman whilst obviously casting Desiree/Kaine in Tom’s valient parents’ role.

What if Tony Young in his unsolved cold murdered taxi driver case had tweeted asking for public sightings of the man and who he picked up just prior to his murder?
    —-
It seems to me Blink’s tweets and column-driven tips are not wide enough to obtain the Farenthold result. Investigation by Twitter would’ve had to have been a Portland reporter with a large following. And MCSO did not have a large twitter following, but lots of parents woukd’ve followed a PPS feed about the missing boy.

Agree completely and appreciate the diligence as always.

I believe that Rose is spot on in looking at the process of LE investigations that were done for cases that have not been solved. These cases often are made difficult when the public is left out of the loop. This also means that the media needs to be involved even though media often publish opinion rather than facts.

  33. erose says:

Rose, I can’t help but remember the mayor/acting Portland Police Chief DID TWEET a public solicitation on the ID of SZ, but he was shut down so hard and so fast.

  34. Yes, Sam Adams. At the time, I believe it was about the plaid/flannel shirt man. Some witnesses I have spoken to believe he was identified and cleared, others not sure. I know the principal was asked and all he would say is that LE asked them not to discuss the case but that their position on possible suspect did not change (no, he did not name TH directly but that was the inference.)

  35. A Texas Grandfather says:

    erose

Who or what organization shut down the mayor regarding his tweets?

The regular media have to walk carefully regarding LE agencies, but as Trump has demonstrated, Twitter can be a powerful way to get directly to the people.

  36. erose says:

It also makes me wonder who had the influence to shut down the mayor?

  37. erose says:

ATG, That was my point to Rose. Who was more powerful than the mayor/police chief who wanted all eyes on TH, or at least wanted all eyes off of SZ, or did they just want the school cleared of any wrong doing? As Blink points out the man in plaid was ID’d and cleared, but the very point that the mayor’s instincts were to reach out in to the community and ask were spot on. Who didn’t want that and why?

  38. A Texas Grandfather says:

The school district was clearly at fault for organizing a science fair that could not be and was not functional in the safety of the students.

There was someone protecting the school against a possible law suite for negligence. IMO when that is discovered, it will open some doors to information that could lead to solving the case.

It is too bad that some way has not been found to really question, under oath, those involved in the investigation. There are three agencies who have by choice or force or threat that have dropped the ball.

  39. Rose says:

@erose. grateful you remembered what I forgot. I believed you raised the issue of the most significant group shutting down all public info of SZ, but shut off my phone for the evening depressed after seeing fireworks on its TV over the Potomac.

We have wondered if the shut down came from high or low in the MCDA (Frink/Moawad), high or low in MCSO (Staton/O’Donnell), PPS (Carole or attorney) political interests on the County Commmission or Council, but when I was reminded by you of the Adams shut down (who could do that) I wondered why he tweeted and who could stop him? Based on his postpolitical career, one posits a business council or group of some kind, as that is to who he looked for post office employment at the City Club which combined so many of his interests, and the OR Congressional Dem delegation which I am convinced were the only ones who could have ever gotten him installed as an office figurehead at WRI with Steer. I notice Steer kept the head of the US Climate Office (the real analyst and researcher) as Adams’ “deputy” and expect Adams was brought in as a political salesman to cities. So, Wyden and Merkyl. I would look if pursuing Adams’ source of pressure to what businessmen were on the City Club Board in mid 2010. Whoever it was had a relationship with Wyden as well to obtain his help in favors for Sam down the road imo.

Interestingly, I found Adams’ then partner P Zuckerman was an Oregonian court reporter and investigative reporter. he had also done a series on pedophilia in the ID boy scouts when residing/writing there. One wonders why the Oregonian did not task him with investigating the Horman abduction in 2010 rather than the ladies’ club as it was his beat in a sense, and he appears to have some creds as an investigative reporter in a possibly similar story line. One assumes he was off the story firewalled due to his domestic partnership with Adams. So, one imagines PZ heard at the Oregonian the “rumors” about SZ and I assume that he is the one who suggested the “tweet” investigatory method and subject matter to Adams.

Revealing an unknown man walked out of Skyline with a 7 yo boy and the teacher’s permission would have harmed the leadership business community’s economic interests. I imagine one of them picked up the phone to the O, WW, and Adams and shut that “rumor” down fast, just as Gates attempted by press conference. The same business interests would have ties to Wyden thru his synagogue.
    ——————
His tweet was the right way to go, tho he should’ve added DM me. His problem was he was a politician, not a reporter, and could be shut down fast. I have no doubt with the tweet publicity someone did supply him the name and he passed it to mcso. In the hands of a reporter, there could have been follow on. “man unknown to the Skyline parents and staff seen at Fair. exited bldg with Kyron approx 9:15. did you spot him there too? In which room and at what time? DM me.” Would’ve forced MCSO to inform the public.
    ________________
In a sense, both Desiree’s and Kaine’s fundraising attempts have been similar crowdsourcing for “tips.” Desiree has an actual personal tipline which looks official that she publicizes thru two “friend” FB Admins in addition to her crowdfunding site. Kaine advertises MCSO tipline. Their problem (futility of their crowdsourcing for tips) is their own sites (BKH and gofundme), and their FB “friend” Admins’ sites, are very lightly read or used in the relevant local Portland area, and they have no training as “investigators.” They do not reach the target audience a Redden or Budnik would reach if twitter crowdsourcing for tips. And MCSO is pretty useless at it; they haven’t even adopted that investigatory communication model.

to make my long story short, an organized business community of some kind whose economic interests would be impacted (investment, city growth, etc). Surely Portland has some kind of organized business council in addition to the City Club. Tho the latter sufficed. Adams was also a longtime employee of Vera Katz, business interests could’ve used her to give him a call.

Pity he didn’t stay with the O, but there’s no climate for investigative reporting on cops and crime there.

whatever became of Sean Cruz — who used the Horman abduction repeatedly in comparison to his own childrens’ loss, he said to Mormon kidnapping in league with his Ex wife, and he beat the drum that “his” enacted child abduction law gave a parent (desiree) the right to sue an abductor (terri) in civil tort law.

In regard to who controls things in the Portland area.

Find the money people, bankers and big business. I remember when I was a teen, that there was a banker and big business group that ran the town. Nothing got done without their concurrence. This situation continued until a smart businessman came to town with a pocket full of money and access to other money outside the control of the bankers.

He couldn’t get much done until he began to investigate the existing money situation. Then he uncovered all the links and ties and published them to the people. That got the newspaper people to begin an investigation. The outcome was that a whole lot of corruption was exposed. The people took care of the rest. This must happen in the Portland area to clean it up.

Let us look back at the Morgan Harrington case. Based on Blink’s articles, many of us immediately thought of investigating all of the drivers of any vehicle of public conveyance that were active in Charlottesville and other nearby communities. Then we extended it to include delivery and service vehicles. Did the police investigate all of those possibilities? Of course not. They were blocked by the fear of UVA that Morgan was taken from their grounds and the police did not do their job.

Then 100 days later Morgan’s body was found in the Red Hill Road area. Forensic evidence partially tied her abduction and death to a five year old case at Fairfax. Did that trigger anything with the police? Maybe, maybe not. However, it should have. The Red Hill area was of significance, but again LE did not link that area with a cab driver or former cab driver. If that had been done, then Hannah would not have met a similar fate. In fact, as we later learned, the perp (Jessie) had as a cab driver attacked an assistant DA while he was driving a cab. That act alone should have put him behind bars for five to ten years in 2009 and neither girl should have lost their life.

Jessie Mathew was given a pass because he was a local football hero and left on the street to continue his predatory ways. When the Criminal Justice system gives a pass to a criminal act for whatever reason, they endanger the rest of the citizens. It should never be allowed.

Portland has been a known dangerous town since the beginning of the 2oth century. Apparently, there are still large amounts of criminal activity, drugs and other things. When the movers and shakers of a community close their eyes to criminal activity, corruption soon follows. In this case, I believe that the entire Criminal Justice System has elements of corruption that keeps true justice and citizen safety at risk.

Sexual predators abound in today’s communities. Ten years ago, I found over 100 listed in our county. This is a county of 1,000 sq. miles and total population of a little over 75,000. Portland is the major population center in Oregon. If the same ratio were to be applied to Portland’s population, then there would be 1,000 predators.

What else is common to this case and the Charlottesville cases? A school system that employees large numbers of people who must be protected.

If a new investigation by outside people is not begun, then Kyron may never be found, Just like the Cooper case that happen in the sky over the Columbia River area 45 years ago.

@ATG. re”the entire Criminal Justice System has elements of corruption that keeps true justice and citizen safety at risk.” I see figuratively “bought” judgeships. Say a business partner, ie real estate developer, and known political donor, recommends his man (or woman) either to the then Governor (State) or to Wyden (Federal). May not get the first opening, but would get one eventually.

The link I posted to the Oregon Business Council liststge tribal leaders. I had not realized, in Oregon, Lithia Motors formal and informal economic power is as pronounced as Intel’s. How far did Intel Legal and Lithia Legal go to bat for the 2 bios with Shrunk and Staton to “get this case solved” and put it behind us? OR Business Council was relatively new–founded in 2002 to bring the State out of a recession. By 2010, they’d adopted an ambitious agenda for tge legislative. One of the iirc 4 prongs was Education, the State’s public ed system reform. Kinda looks like what’s now being adopted (a voc ed job training & stem push). That suits the OBC manufacturers, and fits OBC’s objective to bring more business investment to the State.

There are a ton of free resources online, and if you need a financial advisor, counselor, legal counsel – you are allotted so many visits as part of this benefit.”

imo it seens Kaine was aware on 6/4/10 he had X no of Intel legal counsel consults as part of his benefit pkg.
Why was one of his first actions to tap his legal consult benefit?

  50. “They” are. It appears very little in this case adhered to protocols. Back to that separate search fund nobody has produced accounting for to my knowledge.
