Dr. Phil Show Hosts Missing Portland Child Kyron Horman’s Step Mom Terri Horman Over Two Episodes

I have been covering this case since Kyron Horman disappeared from Skyline School in June, 2010.    Like most missing persons cases I have covered in the past,  I am of the strong opinion that best efforts at the truth are the only way to propel investigations that, similarly to Kyron’s, have gone cold for one reason or another.   This approach has worked in resolving some of my previous cases.    I am proud of that.  I remain steadfast to the integrity involved in those and future cases.

Over the past 10 months (or so) I have been developing an updated series on Kyron’s case to include my multiple interviews with Kyron’s step-mom,  Terri Horman.   Needless to say as she was the subject of at least three simultaneous cases before an Oregon court and remains a person of interest by the agency investigating her sons disappearance, this has been an arduous and sometimes delicate journey.    Ms. Horman’s experiences during the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Kyron Horman are critically important to propelling his case and with great hope- finding the truth about what happened to this cherubic and innocent child.    There are dozens of sources,  collateral interviews, forensic experts and legal analysts that also contribute to my series and have done so because of their belief that my motivation is to bring to light information and opinions in such a way that would almost “require” a focused review of Kyron’s case and the likely shaking of that proverbial tree everyone talks about.

Set to publish about 6-ish weeks ago I was asked to postpone the first installment of the series, which I did.  I subsequently learned Ms. Horman was participating in the Dr. Phil program after she completed taping.  Dr. Phils producers were well aware that Ms. Horman had interviewed with me extensively, and anticipated my series would be publishing information that was not known to the public previously in the days prior to her scheduled episode.    When Ms. Horman conveyed to me that she feels obligated to speak out about “her son” in any national medium that will have her,   I most certainly respected that.  I still do.

While Dr. Phil seems like a gregarious fellow for sure,   I have zero interest in being associated with his program, nor do I believe his shows content is designed to do any furtherance of investigation or truth.  There is much concern (although I have no affiliation to the show whatsoever) that the timing of the publication of my series on the Kyron Horman matter might be interpreted differently or inadvertently contribute to the programs content or audience reactions.     Not what I signed on for.   A missing 7 year old boy six years running is not a framework for entertaining a target audience.   He is not fodder for online social media bully campaigns- yet it occurs.

I will be publishing my series on Kyron’s case at a later date, in it’s entirety with no editing adjustments as a result of any of the appearances on Dr. Phil.   I appreciate your patience and your understanding.   Feel free to discuss the show below.

Porter. I do not have any information from multiple witnesses that she ever left her classroom since about 8:30 (give or take minutes earlier as far as witnesses could confirm) but Terri spoke to her briefly to learn that the kids did their presentations the day before, not this morning as they had been told previously. This occurs in front of Gina Zimmerman.

In my view, this also validates the ensuing email Terri sent to Porter (unanswered) asking whether or not Kyron’s project needed to be picked up that afternoon

    ——–
    IMO
If Porter would have answered TH’s email then after it was discovered Kyron was missing Porter would have had to answer the question why did she not mention that Kyron was absent from class in her email answering TH’s inquiry about picking up the SF project.

Good God, not again. My heart goes out to all those parents of the deceased/injured children.

ROCKFORD, Wash. (AP) — A student who opened fire in a hallway at a Washington state high school killed a classmate who confronted him Wednesday and wounded three others before being stopped by a staff member, authorities said.

The suspect, who a classmate described as being obsessed with previous school shootings, was taken into custody. The wounded victims were expected to survive, officials said.

The shooter brought two weapons to Freeman High School in Rockford, south of Spokane, but the first one he tried to fire jammed, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich told reporters.

“He went to his next weapon,” Kzenovich said. “A student walked up to him, engaged him, and that student was shot. That student did not survive.”

The sheriff said the shooter fired more rounds down the hallway, striking the other students, before a school staffer could stop him. Kzenovich called it a courageous act that prevented further bloodshed.

What do people think? It was known to the Skyline community of parents, teachers, staff, and students that during the “public” portion students would engage the public explaining their research and display boards just like a normal SF from 8:50 to l0 at which time the public was to leave Then instruction started, consisting of the students having the opportunity to see the exhibits of others in groups with an adult escort. Really it does sound like a reasonable plan. Except students did not remain with their displays and were apparently given permission to roam to exhibits of interest in other rooms, at least as to Ms. Porter and Kyron. Perhaps she let him go to the cool electric one under the impression mother was still in the building and awaited him there after he reported at second bell.

So,do you think if SZ targeted Kyron (I personally think he did), having formulated a tight plan (ask his help to carry something in from his vehicle) and a fast secure escape route, where
did he rendezvous at second bell, knowing that was when K would enter his homeroom? Perhaps he planned to ask help with the carry in in Porter’s room itself, and had to quickly regroup when he saw K egress, which in fact worked to his advantage as it was nearer the exterior. Was he waiting to ensure Terri did not go into the homeroom with him? Or did he know in advance from someone (could only be Kaine) that Terri did not plan to remain? It seems as reasonable to me he’d enter K’s homeroom at 9 to solicit his help as to breeze thru Mathews’.

If SZ was familiar with the instructional plan, he knew he had til 10 am before an alarm was raised. Where could he drive to in 45-50 minutes?

  6. Rose says:

Here is why I think SZ specifically targeted Kyron after following him from his homeroom to Mathew’s room.

His pretext was he needed help carrying something in. Yet, he left the request until he reached the two kindergarden/1st rooms at the edge of the bldg.

No adult is going to think either K/1 teacher would allow a kinergardener to help carry something in from the outdoors, in fact the request would be ludicrous on its face with a child that age.

So if the man’s objective was to “tap” a reasonably aged child for “help” to facilitate an abduction he would have done it elsewhere in the building, not as he was sailing out a K/l room. He could have picked a school full of 2nd-4th graders. He didn’t. And Kyron appears to have been the only “older” child in the k/1 room at the time. In my opinion he stalked him through the building, otherwise he’d have picked any of a number of other children near exits.

It’s possible Rose, we don’t know.

It sounds like a usual SF where kids were supposed to stay with their exhibits
& explain them to public visitors for an hour, whether in the gym or their classroom, and if hanging out with a parent do it before bell 2. Actually Terri played right by the rules sending him on to class. Whether or not kids fid oral presentations, she knew there was supposed to be a class. Porter, however, having done presentations on Thurs, gave her pupils permission to take off it seems. Keefer shoukd’ve called her on the carpet big time during that hour. His subsequent middles look like punishment now, only he doesn’t have to improve test scores, just ride it out as Mr Genial.

If Porter hadn’t varied the written plan she sent home, on 6.4 at 8:50 K woukd’ve been presenting with Terri present.

other fairs. Presupposes he’d met K previously. Motive would be handy, retribution to a parent or
    solely sexual deviance.

It is my sincere belief the individual had prior exposure to the school and knew its layout, but I could be wrong.
On whether or not the individual and Kyron knew each other, the reason I can’t commit to a position one way or another is because it stands to reason to me that since SZ has not been identified to this day that he could not have known Kyron, but I also cannot rule out the possibility Kyron may have thought he knew him, either.

I was there Thursday morning and Friday. On Thursday am, I did not see groups touring. On Friday, parents were invited from 8:00 to 10:00. For the students, the school day started at 8:45 as usual. My kids teacher did a short circle time, after which the students were divided in groups of 4-6. Each group was chaperoned by a parent-volunteer or in some cases an 8th grader. The older kids had notebooks that they used to make their reports. At 10:00 all groups were back in the classrooms, and the school continued “as usual”

This poster, Neighbor, said the tours took place around 9ish and “ALL” groups were back in the classrooms for normal/usual class instruction.

So did Porter just do her own thing or are these statements (many more @link) by “Neighbor” made up?

I think we have to assume that nobody can say with certainty exactly what went on in classrooms they were not physically present simultaneously, or in some cases, not at all (for interviews of attendees who may not have visited both or either).

  16. Rose says:

thank you for your assessment Blink. Just to clarify I was not suggesting Kyron knew SZ. If he was targeted as retribution connected to one of the 4 parents, he likely would not.

As to whether K thought he knew SZ. Not that I put 2 cents behind anything DY says, but she did say she thought he had acted on being urged to comply with adult requests while at school. He would have “trusted” a teacher (Mathews) or an adult who appeared to be working for PPS or the Fair or to be a parent in the school, he needn’t have known SZ to comply. The question is why SZ selected him, because he called him by name. Since K was not supposed to be in a K/l room, and it was unlikely any K/1 student would’ve be asked to go outside3 to help carry something based on a K/l’s size alone, imo SZ followed K into that room from elsewhere in the building. It could have been just that he saw the mother leave and knew K was unattached, so stuck with him until he was accessible.

Got it. The reality is we just do not know. If I can’t exclude this offense was tangential to a parent in some manner, I certainly can’t exclude or include the offender knew or knew of Kyron.

Nothing gave me the impression that this was a late start. Late starts are advertised as such in advance. Typically about once a month on a Wednesday.
The only unusual part was that parents/family/friends were invited from 8:00 to 10:00. Students reported to their classroom at 8:45 as usual. I was in another class where the teacher did a 10 minute group time at 8:45 after which she dispatched small groups of students with chaperons. Until 10:00 the students learned by visiting science projects in different classrooms. From 10:00 on, the normal routine resumed.

Was it porter that changed when the SF projects were displayed thus giving her students(Kyron) a free unsupervised hour after TH left the building.

cd, I’m sorry I don’t think I understand your question. The projects themselves were set up the day before, that did not change. The parents were under the impression (by some directive from Porter, I am not sure of how that was communicated) that the in class presentations would take place the morning of the 4th. TMH was prepared to record it (as she did the bridge build presentation we have all seen) and learned when she arrived the “class portion” took place the day before. I have interviewed other parents that were chaperones in other classes and it looks to me like that general time line of just around 10AM or the announced time of the end of the public science fair (8-10am) was when the kids were actually put into groups with chaperones and began touring the various class displays in the building.

Translation- my best info is that kids without a parent present (and maybe some with, I don’t know) were all over the school until they were placed in their class or within their class into a group, potentially.

the Jeffrey Sandusky plea reminds one of the effects of intergenerational sexual abuse, in Jer’s case and Jeffrey’s a minor was the target, as Jeffrey had been, and elements of abuse were repeated (oral sex, arousing nudity). So one is reminded of Kristian. He too approached a minor, in bed, and fondled. But Neil’s obit claimed multiple “sons,” tho we know some were not genetically his. It is impossible to believe Kristian was the only one of Neil’s “sons” who was sexually abused and aroused by “gramps.” Imo the loud intercourse sessions detailed by Kristin’s teenage daughter on twitter coukd have been as arousing to the male involved as if it had been the actual 3way DDS said was solicited from her.

I can’t speak to the issue of whether or not Kaine was abused similarly to his brother although my interviews have indicated the answer to that to me satisfactorily. As a matter or practice on BOC, I am not going to discuss potential victims of sexual abuse (and therefore crimes) that have not made those accusations publicly. I know you all understand and support that.

That said- the very public social media tweets, etc, which I believe were truthful (there was no bedroom door) and it is a tiny house, with a houseful of tween, teen, or elementary girl(s) is beyond bad parenting, imo.

Was the written plan Porter sent home given to TH as a printed sheet or was it in an email. Did all of the parents of children in Porters class receive this information when TH did. It just seems like some of the other parents knew about the actual presentation date and TH did not.

As an example, you all saw the bridge presentation that TMH recorded. That in class presentation occurred on a different day than what was originally scheduled and the only reason TMH found out about it prior to it taking place was because she had emailed Porter about something else and confirmed it- and Porter responded quickly that Kyron would be giving his presentation in about 20 minutes- TMH had 15 minutes to get a toddler packed and ready to get to the school to record it- and she did. My point in mentioning this is that as one example, as a trained and cert educator, Terri was pretty tuned in to Porters lesson plans and the fact that they could change on the fly, but thought perhaps Porter might have taken the hint about her dissatisfaction with the bridge issue. If one reviews Kaine’s early statements, he was also of the opinion that Kyron was participating in the oral presentation of his Red Eyed Tree Frog project that day- as was Desiree.

For me, when I learned of this my first and remaining question to this day was – so, if Kyron gave his presentation on the 3rd, a day early- and Kaine maintained that he had a chat with Ky in the driveway about not being able to come and that he would do great (words of encouragement as I believe KH described Kyron as nervous or wtte) why didn’t Kyron respond he had actually given his presentation the day before?

My first thought is that the KH story is not true. A made up story to reinforce his concerns as a parent.

Second, if the story is actually true, then Kyron was afraid to tell his father that the presentation was the day before- fearful of punishment for not telling him the actual time.

  29. A Texas Grandfather says:

The something that is missing is the total plan for the Science Fair.

Skyline is an old style school with classes from kindergarten through eighth grade. Probably only one classroom for each grade.

If I were to plan such an event in that environment,it would be divided into grades k-3, 4-6 and finally 7 & 8 and they would present on three days. The class count for each grade may be between twenty and twenty-five. This would be close to 200 total students. A very small school.

In the eight years that I taught in the Texas schools, the last week of school is really just baby sitting with movies for entertainment. The school is meeting in order to comply with the required number of days by the state. This may not be true in all states, but it may be in most of them.

The science fair would be taking the place of the movies and other entertainment. It also had another purpose for demonstrating certain activities in order to meet a goal to get recognition by the state school system. I think Rose found this in some of her research.

  30. T. Ruth says:

Good question. In one interview Kaine said Kyron was nervous, in another he said he was happy and looking forward to the day, or some such. Maybe the conversation never really happened??

One would think that during a sci-fair like that, each kid would be required to stay by their projects, to answer any questions that may have been asked by the people touring (i.e., parents, relatives and God knows who all). With the responsible classroom teacher present and aware of the goings on within his/her classroom. Then, after parents and John Q Public leave, the kids be put into groups to go around with their chaperones to view other projects.

The sexual scandals in the PPS system are not unique to that school district. It is occurring more and more frequently all over the country.

The Texas legislature just passed SB-7 and the Governor signed it. It is a bill to authorize the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to create an investigative group for the purpose of finding all the abusers that have escaped detection because the local districts have been covering for the bad behavior. Time will tell if this will turn out to be effective in helping to stop this growing problem.

School districts have not been doing a good job on background checks prior to hiring personnel at all levels. This allows abusers to move across state lines and find work in another district or they just move far enough away in a state to “outrun” general knowledge of the bad behavior.

Pedophiles will always look for opportunities to be in an area where children gather.

Thanks for the class number information Rose.

I know that Texas districts are not allowed a class size greater than 22 students in K-3 and up to 25 in grades 4 & 5.

This information would make the student population close to 400 at Skyline if it continued all the way to grade eight.

These class numbers are far less than those I attended in elementary school. Most first and second grade classes were at least thirty and sometimes thirty-five. All under one teacher with no assistant. Public schools did not have kindergarten in those times. If a parent wanted a child to attend kindergarten, they had to find a private school that offered it.

Is there a witness to this conversation that K had with Ky?

    No.

Thank you, Blink, for your response.

I agree with Rose about needing to destroy TMH’s credibility, and I agree with ATG that the story is made up.

Now I’m wondering what month in 2010 Staton/mcso started its Citizen Patrols, to include schools, and if there is a public roster (foia-able) of the initial 2010 citizen volunteers. One presumes mostly men would be drawn to this volunteer niche. Personally I think all Citizen Patrol volunteers, given their mcso missions, should have psychological screening before entry on duty. Reminds me of that FL dude’s self-identity (citizen patrol).

OT We know from Jeffrey Sandusky, and from his adoptive brother who only at the end of the trial with great struggle, revealed his abuse, that child victims often are very attached to and protective of their abuser. Jeffrey sat thru the entire trial, daily, supporting his father, and was the strongest child support side by side of Dottie in her interviews. He looks like he deteriorated from alcohol after the Marines and with his rather terrible job.

    And why was he nervous?

For me, when I learned of this my first and remaining question to this day was – so, if Kyron gave his presentation on the 3rd, a day early- and Kaine maintained that he had a chat with Ky in the driveway about not being able to come and that he would do great (words of encouragement as I believe KH described Kyron as nervous or wtte) why didn’t Kyron respond he had actually given his presentation the day before?

    Right. ?

TMH was prepared to record it (as she did the bridge build presentation we have all seen) and learned when she arrived the “class portion” took place the day before.

    and same post

Kids got off of the bus to no planned supervision for and hour + 15 minutes.

    snip>

Translation- my best info is that kids without a parent present (and maybe some with, I don’t know) were all over the school until they were placed in their class or within their class into a group, potentially.

  45. erose says:

TH’s original plan was to stay at the school longer. to listen to the oral presentations and record them. Her decision to leave “early” must have been made after she arrived at school, talked to Porter while Kyron was hanging up his stuff and worked out well since she had a fussy baby.

    Correct.

    —-
nervous = Kaine’s word. nuff said.

  47. Rose says:

I can’t recall ever using the word nervous wrt my shy children in early eled.
An odd adjective for a 7 yo male. maybe afraid, or scared, or worried. not
nervous. tho maybe kaine is just pedantic.

  48. erose says:

Was KH’s portrayal of Kyron being happy that morning the first version, as eyes fixed on TH his version of the story changed to a worried Kyron.

Right. Or did it even occur? Was it the scenario one creates to address why if he worked from home 1/2 day anyway he could not attend?

erose That answers the question why she did not pick up the display because she left early because teacher changed things and e-mailed about picking it up later
