David Hartley Gunned Down On Jet Ski In Mexico : Tiffany Young-Hartley Facing Scrutiny

Posted by BOC Staff | Bizarre Crime,Blink,David Hartley,Falcon Lake,Mexican Territory,Murdered,Tiffany Young-Hartley | Tuesday 5 October 2010 10:34 pm

According to his wife, Tiffany Young-Hartley, who called 911, David Hartley, 30, was gunned down by Mexican pirates while the couple ventured across the Falcon Resovior lakes US border to take pictures of the “Mexican Atlantis” or Old Guerreo.

HartleyJetSkiClose

Hartley says her husband was shot in the head and as a result “flew” off his jet ski while the couple was returning from the landmark on the Mexican side of the lake, after taking pictures. She goes on to say she became aware of 3 different boats chasing down the couple only after she saw bullets hitting the water next to her. As she turned around to see where they were coming from, she claims she witnessed her husbands murder.

David was driving a new Sea Doo RXT ski that can climb from 0–30MPH in 1.7 seconds and is capable of top-end speeds of over 60 MPH.  Blinkoncrime.com has not been able to confirm which model Ms. Hartley was driving. The couple had been on at least one earlier jet ski jaunt while still in Mexico, but was cut short due to a mishap with David’s craft on June 20th.

HartleyMovingJune2010

According to his wife, David was face-down in the water, wearing a life vest, after he was shot.

Despite the horror of what she had just witnessed and astonishingly avoiding injury to her or her watercraft, she circled back around, jumped off her jet ski, and turned her 250 lb. husband upright to observe the gunshot wound to his forehead. You read that correctly, according to Tiffany Hartley, while being chased from behind, David was shot from the front. Hartley maintains this is when she attempted to load him onto her jet ski, and also when two of the three boats were now positioned in front of her.

TiffanyFB

One of the alleged pirate boats from the front approached her within 10 ft. While she stared down the barrell of his gun, she was holding onto her husband with one hand, her ski with the other asking not to be shot. Apparently through some sort of Mexican telepathy or nautical sign language, the men who just ambushed the couple and murdered her husband in cold blood, made a decision to let her go and retreated IN FRONT OF HER.

Hartley claims she cannot identify any of the men, that they never said a word to her nor could she hear anything they may have said to each other, but believes the motive for the attack to be robbery or to kidnap her. It is not clear how Tiffany arrived at this conclusion as they never made an attempt to stop them or ask them for their money, she was off her $13,000 Sea doo they could have easily taken, and they let her go.

It was at this time that Hartley finally did hear something. She says she heard the voice of God tell her to leave David, save herself and get to safety. However, his instruction must have been non-specific because she proceeded to mount her ski in deep water, start it back up, and drive directly toward and then past the very band of gun weilding murderous cartel who minutes ago gunned down her highschool sweetheart and spouse of 8 years. (Editors note: I cannot imagine the nerve it takes to again have your back to the same crew who, unprovoked, sprayed the lake with bullets behind you while you were fleeing for your life).

While Tiffany admits the couple was aware of recent pirate activity in the area they learned about while David researched the location, she claims they had not heard of anymore incidents on Falcon Lake, which borders both Texas and Mexico, “in a while.”

The Hartley’s, who had recently been on a few tropical vacations, were in the process of relocating to Colorado next week from Reynosa, Mexico and McAllen Texas, where they had lived for only a few months, following David’s transfer request to Calfrac well services.

According to recent Facebook postings, although the couple could not agree on furniture tastes, they recently purchased a house full of it just after a luxury cruise and visit to a seminar for those experiencing financial difficulty.

I would love to be able to do no analysis and regergetate this story as reported by main stream media whereby not one reporter asks the obvious question:

After several known incidents of piracy in that location over the last months, why would the “pirates” suddenly go on a murderous rampage in lieu of attempting to rob a couple on jet skis that could outrun them on sight?

Not gonna happen. I have heard umpteen versions of Ms. Hartley’s version of events leading to the random execution of her husband.

None pass the smell test. However, just today, Zapata County Sheriff “Sigi” Gonzalez, Jr says his investigation, now aided by a witness who is a long standing member of the Zapata community, exonerates Mrs. Hartley of any wrongdoing.

Gonzalez completely rules out foul play on the part of Mrs. Hartley.

“A local witness saw Tiffany Hartley escaping on her jet-ski to the Texas side of the lake,” he said. “She came in at high speed and was being pursued by armed men in a Mexican fishing boat that that the witness clearly observed.”

Gonzalez said the witness was a long-standing member of the Zapata community who was well known to him and regarded as highly credible.

“The testimony of this witness dispels any idea Mrs. Hartley was involved in any wrongdoing regarding the murder of her husband,” he said firmly. “She called in a 911 phone call to our office at around 2:20 p.m. on the day of the incident, immediately after she got to shore, and her statements to my office confirm what the local witness observed.”

Unfortunately, the witness account does not match Tiffany Hartley’s own version of events. At no time has she ever said that she was again chased by the “pirates”, in fact, she claims she left them behind after driving “through” them.

Hartley references recent pirate activity, which is almost verbatim what she says happened to her and David, with the exception of the actual piracy:

On April 30, five people in two different boats were fishing on Falcon Lake and went to the Old Guerrero area, where they were taking photos of the old church. While they were there, a boat with four heavily tattooed men approached the two boats quickly. The men identified themselves as “Federales,” but they were not wearing uniforms. The men boarded the boats, demanded cash and asked “where are the drugs?” The fishermen told the men that they had no drugs and were just fishing and taking photos. They ended up giving the men $200 cash and left the area. The pirates followed the two boats, but the U.S. boats were able to outrun them and the men stopped following once the two boats entered U.S. waters.

In every recorded incident since April, the heavily tattoed pirates posing as “Federales” without uniforms, came upon anchored fishing boats, boarded them, robbed the fisherman at gunpoint of any personal cash, searched for drugs left without any violence. In the Hartley family interview on the Today show, Tiffany states that after David was hit, she circled around, jumped off her jetski, swam over to her husband and because he was “face down in the water” she had to turn him over where she discovered he was shot in the head.

It would seem I am not alone in my quagmire.  Mexican Investigators, who hold jurisdiction have already begun to question Ms. Hartley’s story.

Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney for the Miguel Aleman Province adjoining Falcon Lake on the Mexican side, has questioned whether Tiffany Hartley was involved in foul play.

Early this morning, Sheriff Sigi Gonzalez announced the Mexican Authorities will be searching the area where David Hartley was murdered, and have committed to “not leaving” until they find him. Tiffany Hartley, accompanied by her parents, but without David’s, filed a missing person report at the Mexican Consulate last night as a matter of procedure to “get the ball rolling”.

I have to stick up for JVM. She does a great job of reporting about human and animal victims. I saw the show when she talked about the beheading of the investigator and she seemed pretty sincere and concerned about him to me. JVM said that Tiffany seems “unsophisticated”. IMO, Tiffany comes off as a COMPLETE idiot. Maybe JVM is just being a little too compassionate and thinks this woman is innocent and is getting bullied. I had a hard time writing this because, Blink, I am a big fan of yours and I love the site. JVM is one of my favorites. I don’t want to offend anyone but had to stick up for Jane. I knew it! Somehow I knew this would all come down to the employment scenario, it had to eventually. Great work and research Blinkers!!
So the authorities on both sides have called off the search. And they now want to meet with TH to “go over” her “statements”. She better get ready for that polygraph. Mark my word, she will be lawyered up and advised NOT to take a polygraph before that meeting. My guess is she now knows they may be on to her.
Just as in the case of Kyron Horman, I think some smart law enforcement have been monitoring the blogs very closely these last few weeks. Blink, yours has the most credibility because of all the links posted, makes it easy for LE to read and research and garner lots of info in one sitting.
This is what I mean about average citizens standing up and demanding justice and not accepting lies and half truths from the media.
There is no doubt extreme danger on both sides of the border, that much is fact. But its very hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. With so much money at stake, the good guys cross to the dark side, especially now with record unemployment in this country and so many under financial duress.
If I were LE I would start looking for alot more of these “incidents” to happen as people get more and more desperate.

  6. Mermaid14 says:

BTW, the FBI insists on a drug test before they poly anyone.

Respectfully, that is not necessarily true. Technically speaking the SOP as developed by Cleve Baxter, former head of CIA polygraph division negates the need for “curve” to accomodate such a possibility.. As it happens, I have been studying this specifically for a different case, and one of the BOC editors has been administering them for several years. Also, terms are frequently negotiated, but I do agree if certain drugs were found in the system, the FBI might refuse to test under such conditions.

I will be anxiously awaiting the results of this “meeting” between TH and officials. It wouldn’t surprise me if it gets “postponed” for one reason or another as a stall tactic.
There is no doubt Mexico is in sad shape, really sad. Former president Fox and current president Calderon both vowed to “clean up” the corruption and both failed miserably.
But as we point the finger of corruption south, better beware of what is happening here. We have the same lawlessness, corruption, drug and gun running by government officials, fixed elections, corporate crime on a massive scale. As the drugs pour in to meet the demand, more street crime and petty crime to feed the habit. They arrested a public school teacher yesterday who had stolen and fenced dozens of school laptops to feed her heroin addiction.
Lawlessness and corruption just looks different when it wears a suit or a nice dress.
And when they don’t even have to hold a gun to your head to take your hard earned money, all they have to do is ask for a “bailout”, well, there’s no blood.

Eloise thanks for posting that article-

    Snipped-

“It waslike someone posting “Went to my first AA meeting” as their status and following it up days later with beer-pong pictures.”

“Did they simply disregard Ramsey’s advice on “living on less than you make,” or did they get a sudden influx of cash? And if so, where did that cash come from?”

I just feel the need to point out that just because most of us don’t live near the border- and don’t know how Mexico sometimes reacts ect- does not mean that our questions and concerns are coming out of left field.

That argument just does not cut the mustard-JMO It may turn out that Tiffany Hartley told the truth and nothing but the truth, yet IMO we would still be right to have asked questions. It is not a slight against a grieving widow, for LE to investigate the circumstances and manner in which their husband was killed. Especially, when the killing happened in another country- with no witnesses and no body has been found.

If a person were to concoct a whole story- wouldn’t they also know the beliefs and long held opinions of those who live near and experience these dangers everyday? Wouldn’t they know fullwell that there would be many fine, caring people who would say- the naysayers- the doubters- they just don’t understand the dangers… they just don’t understand what we live with here…These cartels, the crimes- doubters just don’t know.

Isn’t understandable that some bad person could use the conditions around the border and in Mexico to ‘hide behind’ in order to escape hard questioning?

As I have written before, I don’t know what happened to David Hartley. I don’t know if his wife is lying or covering up something- or if she is telling the whole truth- but as Blink’s article and many other people here, and elsewhere have pointed out – there are problems with how she says it all went down.

IMO it is the right thing to do, to question the last known person to see a missing person and especially one that has been reported killed- murdered- by unknown assailants.

To not investigate, to not ask questions, IMO would be a travesty of justice.

Blink, your previous post about Tiffany needing to take a lawyer to her meeting with the FBI/Mexican officials is sage advice. My husband, a retired career prosecutor and now a judge, says you should NEVER allow yourself to be questioned by the FBI without a really good lawyer by your side. It is not always just as simple as being truthful with the agent. Suffice to say there are bad apples in every LE agency. Enough said.

Good Point, and I imagine that the FBI would advise her of same. The days of only liars need lawyers are long gone. I suspect Calfrac provided counsel to Hartley weeks ago, but have been unable to verify that.

  16. zinnia says:

Jettx, I can totally understand where you’re coming from about having a difficult time believing TH killed her husband and that the Mexican drug cartel could have been responsible, but what is really hard for me to buy into is that TH and DH were totally witless, innocent tourists who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you ignore all of the deceptive behavior and changing of her story depending on who is interviewing her, just ask yourself if it makes sense that they would have crossed into Mexico, illegally, to innocently take pictures of a church in a known drug den. Let alone, what about their lavish lifestyle?

Maybe there is some truth in her story, but I don’t buy at all that she and David were totally innocent in how it all went down (or didn’t go down) like she’s claiming.

I wanted to clarify my 1am post now that I am more coherent. What struck me in that poster’s comment from “Hair Balls”, not the other, was the lone ski theory. That seems to correllate with the comment TYH made about being on the ‘back’of the ski. Someone here mentioned that inconsistent statement, among others that she said.
So were Tiffany & David out together on one ski, and the one that remained was never taken out on the water? The only support opposing this exists by the lone witness. What was their vantage point? Did they really see her return from the water? I wonder about that. We have wondered whether she was able to pull the ski back onto the trailer, and if not her then who, Sigi? Forensics of the remaining ski should be examined, has it?

How will the outlaws, reach her? She should give a few phone numbers,

She is deep in the sludge, IMO.

  24. SouthernMom says:

I was on the “Tiffany is guilty” train at first.

Please don’t throw tomatoes at me now…I DONT THINK SHE KILLED HER HUSBAND and I don’t think she planned it. I do think her story is fabricated, though. Could be she actually left her hubby in the dust in her own attempt to save herself and is covering ‘that’ up.

Maybe, she truly does “feel” guilty for surviving…or guilty because she left her husband behind or the fact she was allowed to live. She feels guilty, therefore, she appears so…in a big way.

I also think she is one of those quirky people who will not fit into “normal” deceptive readings. I think she was scared and in shock during whatever really happened and is generally a lil’ loopy by nature.

I do think she is hiding something…most likely that she left her husband to die in order to save herself. Maybe she has fabricated details to make her look good or ‘better’ in the eyes of family and now, the nation. While I can’t believe this went down exactly as she claims, I think her motivation behind the lies is to cover up that she did nothing to save her husband…out of fear or just her own survival instincts.

The statement analyses on Peter Hyatt’s site have shown deception in areas that have now been proven to be true…this is why I think it’s her own quirkiness that makes her the somewhat ‘exception to the rule’. I’ve read some ‘quirky’ people will fail lie detector tests no matter what the subject is even when 100% truths are told…and some are also always going to pass even when being deceptive. I have to assume that same oddness could apply here to statement and body language analyses.

So my theory is they met up with bad men (pirates/cartel) who were suspiscious of camera/pic taking, or something (mistaken identity) that led them to believe DH was an enemy spy/scout. They shot him and let Tiffany go once they realized their mistake or more likely, she escaped leaving her husband behind. I think the cartel/murderers removed DH and his jetski in a cya move.

Regarding Tiffany giggling…many people laugh or giggle inappropriately in stressful and even distasterous situations…it’s a nervous reaction…not intentionally meant to be rude or thoughtless, but still uncontrollable.

MOO MOO MOO MOO…all the way home.

    Prayers for the Hartley family.

Her interviews with both of the above were very similar, so I can’t remember exactly which one. I also remember that the one with AC, she immediatly starts the interview with a smile. I could have sworn several people had posted a link to it on this blog, the day it aired…and that it was early in the evening…so try JVM footage first. Have a great weekend.

Just saw tiff on JVM. she states the mexican detective killed sat next to her with a translator to discuss the DH case. i’m not seeing a distraught, grieving widow. She says on camera that “we just want david back… maybe they can’t provide a body, i don’t know, but they could provide something of evidence… anything that would tell us… ya know that.. where david’s at… ya know, we just want him back. just give us that and we’ll go away”. then giggles and says “i mean”.

Madilu, the footage aired on JVM on 10/13/10…but I still can’t find it on the web either…weird huh? Hmmmm…

    Reported this morning.

Quoted from David’s mom: I find this quote a bit odd:
“David wouldn’t want anybody putting their life, you know, in danger to hunt for him. I know he wouldn’t,”

    —————————————————–

She says she is fine with the search ending for his body. Does she know something, the public doesn’t?

If Tiffany is involved with a cover up, I’m sure the FBI is all over it….. now that they are a part of this investigation.

  34. Rhoni says:

This question has been bothering me for a few days….

How would the pirates mistake David for a rival gang member (cartel), if they noticed his truck had Mexico tags? Do they have some amazing binoculars to see that far across the lake. What is it, like 5 miles? And how big are these ‘tags’?

What is Tiff doing with the Memorial funds?

Do the funds need to be reported to the IRS? The money (if she is collecting money), it is it a gift? Do money gifts need to be reported?

    ********************************************
Dave Ramsey may be able to give her some good advice. The church is collecting the funds -so most likely a gift to her -but for what??? I am sure the family has been inundated with potluck style contributions for all meals…what exactly do they need funds for? They are, “way ahead of the game, remember?”

That money won’t be monitored -you know, when the Bethany Storro gal in Portland threw acid on her face -alleging a black lady did it… She very quickly spent a lot of the donated money on train tickets, dinners out for the whole family, new clothes…etc. Her spending facts would NEVER have been uncovered had she in fact been a real victim. Instead, she was a fake, and LE used the spending of donated money to nail her.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows what the responsibility is on the recipient of funds such as this…a public request for money, but channeled thru the church…Maybe she will get a new jet ski?

October 16, 2010 at 8:34 am …. the lone ski theory. That seems to correllate with the comment TYH made about being on the ‘back’of the ski. Someone here mentioned that inconsistent statement, among others that she said.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Tiff has made a few statements that might indicate such a scenario as a lone ski. “I couldn’t get him BACK on my ski” -I personally do not think she said she was ON the back -but indicated that when the gun was pointed at her, she was in the water AT the back, he at the front, so 10 feet from her. I could imagine a scenario where bad guys robbed David’s of his ski, forced him onto hers, but then somehow something went bad and he got shot. Who freakin’ knows…

  37. Madilu says:

SouthernMom -”…I do think she is hiding something…most likely that she left her husband to die in order to save herself.”

    ********************************************************************
It could very well be that her lies are all simply about not being able to face that she did nothing to help him. Could be. Especially since her early interviews when she made it a point over and over “I just, no questions asked went back” -and on and on about him being so much bigger. IF that’s the case, what I can’t understand is how she would think that anyone at all would BLAME her for high-tailing it out of there…People are compassionate… but not when being lied to.

    @ Eloise:

About your previous comment on David’s jetski being broken…and maybe the two went out on one jet ski together.

    Very possible.

Last week, I posted quotes from one of Tiffany’s first interviews. It was with Greta V from Foxnews. In these quotes, during the interview, Tiff called her jetski her ‘boat’, twice during her short conversation with Greta.

I was wondering if David and Tiffany had a boat and they tied his jetski to the boat, while David escaped to another part of the US side of the lake. From the very beginning I thought this was a financial escape or gain for this couple and David is not dead.

Also, I read that the type of Jetski that David had, even though it’s a $15,000 jetski, they tend to break down on first tries and the cost to repair is always around $1900 to 2500. I’m surprised Tiffanny never mentioned the ski getting fixed.

Yes, it is. This is the interview from the Chronicle that was posted earlier. I agree it gives by far the best information we have on the case, and everyone following it should listen in.

TH and her family can spin the FBI meeting however they want, but since I read the meeting lasted 8 hours, I’m pretty sure they did a lot more than just “refile” paperwork.

Nobody mentioned if they were interviewed separately.

Thank-you for the additional photos. I want to go to Falcon Lake.

The link you provided was helpful, because, I did not realze
land existed behind the Church. A walking tour, floored me, where
a person could browse around to the school, etc. Thank-you.

    http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~wd/various/GVFG.pdf (your link)

DH may have been walking the grounds, behind Nuestra Señora del Refugio Church, and shot while taking photographs. That would be more
    likely than on the water.

The Sept. 7, 2010 (photos) show water at record levels of the Church, I also see, what appears to be grass around parts of the building.

David was into History, he would have been prone to poking around on the grounds, just observe what took place during the 50 years since the original flood.

The photos (I am referring to) is on the large link to the fish:)

I am disappointed, that not one anchor or reporter, researched the
Nuestra Señora del Refugio Church. The reporters could have
challenged, Tiff, if they were on land or water, (supposedly) taking photos.

That’s exactly my thought Intriqued! Way lengthy. And she had to refile, why? They didnt receive her fax or they gave her an option to rethink that original statement in comparison to the tv ops.
So who was present, her folks and his?

Has anyone seen this article yet?

Okay, I have too much spare time on my hands, thought I’d browse the Mexico terrain. So on google maps, I located: Barreales, México and zoomed in. Between this rural area and the river, you can see a circular green area, and in the center of it something that looks like a compound/autos. I swear the green circle looks like rows of “crops” and a pipe laid out to bring in water from the river. To the left of circle you can almost see something that looks like it could be a watchtower. Not trying to start rumors…just having some fun with the maps. Don’t even know the age of the map imagery. (For what it’s worth….I can tell that the imagery on my home town on google maps is roughly two years old. Per changes that I have made in my yard.)

    Madilu,

The acid woman recieved 29,000 in donatons.

TH does not have children, or does she need to pay for a funeral, what
does she need charitable donations,is a good question!

Likely, little old ladies, are sending money from their retirement or SSN checks, thinking, someone needs it more.

I want to Thank-you and everyone, for the interesting and helpful information. This is a no-nonsense thread, it is great.

Thank-you for having me as a guest.
