Dr. Phil Show Hosts Missing Portland Child Kyron Horman’s Step Mom Terri Horman Over Two Episodes

I have been covering this case since Kyron Horman disappeared from Skyline School in June, 2010.    Like most missing persons cases I have covered in the past,  I am of the strong opinion that best efforts at the truth are the only way to propel investigations that, similarly to Kyron’s, have gone cold for one reason or another.   This approach has worked in resolving some of my previous cases.    I am proud of that.  I remain steadfast to the integrity involved in those and future cases.

Over the past 10 months (or so) I have been developing an updated series on Kyron’s case to include my multiple interviews with Kyron’s step-mom,  Terri Horman.   Needless to say as she was the subject of at least three simultaneous cases before an Oregon court and remains a person of interest by the agency investigating her sons disappearance, this has been an arduous and sometimes delicate journey.    Ms. Horman’s experiences during the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Kyron Horman are critically important to propelling his case and with great hope- finding the truth about what happened to this cherubic and innocent child.    There are dozens of sources,  collateral interviews, forensic experts and legal analysts that also contribute to my series and have done so because of their belief that my motivation is to bring to light information and opinions in such a way that would almost “require” a focused review of Kyron’s case and the likely shaking of that proverbial tree everyone talks about.

Set to publish about 6-ish weeks ago I was asked to postpone the first installment of the series, which I did.  I subsequently learned Ms. Horman was participating in the Dr. Phil program after she completed taping.  Dr. Phils producers were well aware that Ms. Horman had interviewed with me extensively, and anticipated my series would be publishing information that was not known to the public previously in the days prior to her scheduled episode.    When Ms. Horman conveyed to me that she feels obligated to speak out about “her son” in any national medium that will have her,   I most certainly respected that.  I still do.

While Dr. Phil seems like a gregarious fellow for sure,   I have zero interest in being associated with his program, nor do I believe his shows content is designed to do any furtherance of investigation or truth.  There is much concern (although I have no affiliation to the show whatsoever) that the timing of the publication of my series on the Kyron Horman matter might be interpreted differently or inadvertently contribute to the programs content or audience reactions.     Not what I signed on for.   A missing 7 year old boy six years running is not a framework for entertaining a target audience.   He is not fodder for online social media bully campaigns- yet it occurs.

I will be publishing my series on Kyron’s case at a later date, in it’s entirety with no editing adjustments as a result of any of the appearances on Dr. Phil.   I appreciate your patience and your understanding.   Feel free to discuss the show below.

Blink, Great insights and lessons, as always. Schools, and other institutions (thinking Second Mile) can facilitate someone’s (unknown to the parent) access to children. That’s what is so frustrating. Example: You’ve met the soccer coach, but had no idea someone volunteers to help him. I sat thru so many practices, games and events to make double sure and threw fits when required KWIM? Oh yeah you do, you’re the Mom that freaked out about the potential drunks and druggies near your kids, LOL.

Absolutely agree. I also realize it can take some learned skill and tact to insure your kids are conversational rather than investigative subjects to freely discuss who they come in contact with. The age of instant access and social media/apps presents an additional access point parents MUST track. It was non negotiable in our house- I pay for your gadgets, I have access to everything on it.

When I first found your site at the beginning of this case, I remember you emphasizing “Gift of Fear” so I picked it up at the library and read it. I would encourage everyone to read it but especially women. Often women put the feelings of others first (even strangers), and I am very guilty of that. It was as though Mr. DeBecker had given me “permission” to trust my instincts.

Also, you said, “I have ZERO doubt that the very subjects of the article will reoffend in some way and/or the very interview was sexually arousing to them as pedophiles.”

I could not agree more; that was the strong impression I got also.

But, if it was someone who worked there regularly, surely some other staff member, or even a kid, would have come forth and said “oh yes they were there that day”. Now, a sub, who no one was very familiar with, that’s a different story. And your point makes sense completely.

But then, if, just if, it was the former, and it was ‘only’ a child who indicated seeing someone there who says they were not, it would explain the wording of the Task Force memo:

“1. ANY INDIVIDUAL (to include a minor child), other than a Skyline Student, who you have reason to believe was on the campus between 8-12 on June 4 but is not on this list; and 2. ANY INDIVIDUAL who is on the list but who you have reason to believe was not on campus during that time.”

If, let’s say only one or two young children said they saw Mr./Mrs. So-and-So, and yet no other adult did, they (LE) sure as hell wouldn’t want Mr./Mrs. So-and-So to know that the only witness(s) who identified them as being present were one or two children. It also would kinda’ explain #2; Since if it were a child saying Mr./Mrs. So-and-So was there, LE would need someone other than one child to place Mr./Mrs. So-and-So elsewhere before we disregard the children’s stories as mistaken identity.

I’ve often wondered if that isn’t precisely what happened here. That very young children/child were really the only witness to seeing Kyron with someone “male chaperone”. Wasn’t it the kindergarten or first grade class where Kyron was wandering around? So a five or 6 year old?
IDK. If it were me, I probably would have believed the child, but ??

Kyron’s birthday is coming up soon, 9/9, he will be turning 17 years old, if he’s still out there somewhere. I was just reading back the other day, and we were discussing Hurricane Sandy’s approach, here we are 5 years later, with another nasty Hurricane, and not one inch closer to finding Kyron. Just so sad. God bless all the Bahamians and help them with their recovery. Stay safe everyone, and hug your kids and loved ones.

A short google shows a Mult woman who was in mcso jail nevertheless dealt in that jail (resulting in a death) fentanyl sourced from the dark web. Tiny quantities impact. Which made me think any dealors in steroid products from China in 2010 very likely included minute quantities of the far more profitable fentanyl.

re Blink’s replies…. Well, that potential dx would explain the apparent “spaciness” & repetitive behaviors (entering room, backing out) not making eye contact (tho vision impairment explains), his brightness, while looking motorically awkward, language communication issues (challenged obeying adult directions at school) .
Kaine would bust a gut, so would Desiree, with that diagnosis.

Follow up Q. Did Terri ever discuss the reason for the Dr’s apptmt & her underlying spec ed-related concerns with Kaine including the ASPY possibility to be ruled out? If not, why not (ie fear?).

I have to answer that generally- I would say that Terri had reason to believe Kaine would be less than responsive with her concerns, thus the Dr. appt and therefore neutral approach.

Oh my. Thanks for posting T.ruth. Seems impossible to get so much wrong when three of Kyron’s parents were on his actual show, but he sure did. I have been asked by a few podcasts to be be interviewed for Kyron’s case(seems like the right time to mention) and I have declined. I never say never, but the reason I have so far is because not one of them was willing to agree to strict format requirements. Might be unpopular, but this case is not fodder for entertainment and in my view the goal of any coverage should be to progress the case at a minimum. Was shocking to learn that it was actually Kaine that called 911 from the house re threats from Terri and not that Terri made that call because RSE was in her driveway asking for money while her son was missing. Apparently THAT was the basis for the FAPA. Who knew? (Kidding of course, but gives a flavor of how inaccurate that podcast 1&2 is.)

Reminds me of the frequent TV interviewee who said in the Judiciary Comm yesterday his practice is to lie on news shows & proud of it. Remotes are a wonderful invention.

It was bizarre. For a licensed forensic psychologist It’s very unclear to me how dispositive facts aren’t the basis for analysis. Not gonna find this child that way-

I just finished listening to the D.P. podcast. I just wanted to scream..did anyone ask DY how many times she had been in that school that she was so familiar with the layout. Terri had been there enough to know and if she was going to lie about it you would think she would get that fact straight. I will say it illustrated that DY was already suspecting Terri had done something to Kyron before getting to Portland that day.Why had she left him with someone that would evoke that fear immediately. The little emotional response she showed about Kaine finally admitting he cheated on her was telling again. I will say that at one SM site I read that are sure Terri did it where not thrilled with the podcast either.

I could not agree with you more that (keep in mind though- we don’t know the edits. Specifically on that point as I did not remember that statement from DY airing in the original episode.) the comment re Kaine’s apology albeit subsequent non admission from Kaine re the immediate affair she was alleging is an emotional glance at what DY believes is the impetus for Kyron’s disappearance.

It is beyond me (and certainly does not speak to the benefit of a detectives spouse) how she can be convinced that Kaine’s actions in his marriage are the catalyst, yet his criminal actions (this is on record people, in several forms) where associates he knew personally ended up in jail is not the priority lead to be run down to the nth.
Lastly, anyone else notice it’s nearing the end of September and not a word on the “upcoming book” Greg Olsen refused to co-write? Neither the author nor the committed publisher attended that firehouse meeting, correct?

    FYI
    _______________

I was surprised Phil’s podcast was so inaccurate that even some of the posters on Soldiers Facebook pointed out errors. I’ll bet you didn’t know that Kyron carried his project into the science fair on the day of the science fair all by himself. Or that his back pack and coat were not found in his classroom. Part 1 was so bad I did not listen to part 2.(I am sure it was a mess also). Phil always talks about the investigators he employs. I now realize that that is not true since they got things wrong that were public information published in the local news. I will never believe anything Phil says again.

Right- as a fellow criminology professional if he ever had any creds that podcast (1 and 2) convinced me that he appeals to the true crime (as a rubber -necking genre for entertainment value) soap opera crowd. How is that different than any other ambulance chaser? Moreover, doesn’t someone in a licensed capacity ( forensic psychologist) have an obligation to fact check at the very least, a persons self proclaimed medical info if you are considering it to form an opinion? Anyone notice the claim about DY dire medical health was not explored on the show where BOTH her and Kaine were sitting there, yet he presents it “as fact” in his monologue podcast?

I will remind everyone of what Dr. Philibuster did not even think important to the case apparently- in DY civil suit, The Judge ruled that ALL parties medical records were discoverable, and DY AND TY subsequently cancelled 2 depositions and withdrew the suit immediately prior to the end of its abatement.

I am going to make myself listen to all of part 2 now, lol.

Until anyone/someone can confirm exactly who was present that day- staff or non staff, and the fact that Kyron was certainly old enough to resist a forced abduction, I am inclined to believe the witness accounts re who Kyron was last seen with, and that information was corroborated by multiple witnesses, both minor and Adult status.
The fact that MCSO and the FBI treat those accounts differently pursuant to the abduction is another indicator. No disrespect intended, but the fact that MCSO has never sought a case review of any kind, most especially from the FBI, should speak volumes about the status of this case on its own.

Lol, It’s called a pre diligence possibility for exclusion. There is no doubt (and I am not speaking out of turn here, I have told this to Terri and many other case-relative persons) that Terri had a problem with honesty and therefore integrity that absolutely elevated her status on the POI Scale. I don’t have the luxury of personal judgement when I am working as an investigator or analyst in a case. Facts are facts and in this case it is a verified fact via multiple witnesses and other irrefutable evidence I do not have source permission to share that Kyron did not leave that school with Terri and Kiara and that information is part of a civil court record and Kyron’s “60” binders within MCSO now searchable investigative database. So if any and all theories pertaining to Terri as the perpetrator are in direct conflict with what LE and BOTH Kyron’s parents know to be true – how can anyone conclude Terri so much as committed a crime here? That’s basic common sense, before any of that pesky “law” gets in the way.
I can’t teach a cat to bark yet Rose, lol.

  32. Ode says:

Wait until you hear part 3 of Dr. Phil’s podcast if you want to listen. At least he steps out of his narrative when talking about Dede to say she was absolutely correct to hire an attorney when public scrutiny was pointing at her as an accomplish. No such statement for TH. Wonder why? The 2 things that stood out were that TH says that RS approached her first about offing Kaine for money. It always confused me why they thought the sting of RS demanding $10,000. would work since nothing was ever done to Kaine. It would make more sense if he was offering again to do it, not if he was …like I wouldn’t do it then but I will now. Why would he do that? The other thing was that TH presented the theory of the strange unknown man the day before Kyron went missing at the gas station wanting to know where is the nearest school. She states there were witness’ and interaction with one of the store employees at that station with the man. Dr P. says that none of that was found to be true. Why would she make up such an elaborated story?

I apologize for just realizing my response to this did not post, posting again:

In my analysis of the non-public recordings from the “RSE sting”, and subsequent source interviews I am of the firm opinion RSE was scripted as to that $10k “demand” with the endgame of TH arrest for attempted solicitation. The subsequent FAPA and emergency order request did not include removal of TMH from the marital home which tells me it was anticipated she would be arrested following the sting. RSE has/had an immigration problem and in advance of his deposition with Houze, Underhill granted him immunity from his office seeking deportation, etc.

On the issue of the unidentified man at the 711 on June 3- once again Dr. Phil is Dr. Full of S*it. I say unidentified “publicly” but his identity, which was gleaned from the TX plates on his pickup (among other sources) was/is known to MCSO and to the various legal teams involved.

Honestly, as I moved through episode 5, where Phil spends time saying his podcasts are his legally protected opinion, I became embarrassed for him and angry for Kyron.

Now I’m up to 7 but about to be brutal again. I think strangers online is insane unless Blink is moderating & Jack hasn’t turned twitter over to Blink just yet.

It is very unusual Rod Underhill did not groom his replacement after a professional life in the office & reasonable terms as a DA which afforded him time to do so. Seems narcissistic not to think of the future & prepare to hand off a baton to one or several groomees.

  40. Rose says:

did you ever discuss possible grooming
    episodes at school with Terri?

    Yes. None.

Consider Dr Phil made both those
    items attributed to Teri
up just like he did the existence of
    GJ transcripts.

Soldier advertises Phil 4 which claims a review of official Grand Jury transcripts!
    —————-
Terri never testified before the GJ. Dede testifies before the GJ no one was arrested as a result and there was no true bill. If Dr Phil says he saw the official transcripts. I was on a GJ in Oregon and I did not see anyone making transcripts. We were supposed to take notes which when evidence was being shown or witnesses testifying most people on the GJ were not doing. They were listening not writing. So where would these supposed transcripts have come from? Does FakeDR. Phillup even realize that at least in Clackamas County there are no Transcripts so that statement makes him look like an idiot. And I realize he is exactly that. His supposed research team Probably stays up nights laughing at this dummy. Does Soldier understand that the Grand Jury in Oregon is made up of a subset of the people called for jury duty who get picked on the fly as a case/cases( GJ service is 1 month) comes up.

I have not listened to it yet, so I don’t know the exact assertion, but I can state unequivocally that there is no possibility Dr. Phil had access to any Grand Jury transcripts.

no grooming at school by anyone associated w/Skyline to me increases the likelihood this was a crime directed to harm one of his parents, ie revenge…for an activity of Kaine’s, a case of Tony’s (like the man he put away 2x on “if not him who?”), or Desiree’s past associates, etc.

I could never find any evidence of “grooming” nor could I find an opportunity for it- pretty common for a 7 year old. From a victimology perspective, which is the reason the FBI and MCSO are at odds over this investigation, there can really only be two investigative avenues once the early ones were excluded- Kyron was targeted or he was a crime of opportunity. To my knowledge, no agency has excluded the possibility that Kyron’s disappearance could be linked to extraneous relationships or circumstances.

I don’t know why this case investigation failure hasn’t
sparked outrage in Portland like Ramsey did in Denver.
Rod could’ve done something & instead he just covers up like ….

Because he was part of it. To my knowledge he granted immunity to RSE- and he was certainly present during some of the unsavory business.
