Dr. Phil Show Hosts Missing Portland Child Kyron Horman’s Step Mom Terri Horman Over Two Episodes

I have been covering this case since Kyron Horman disappeared from Skyline School in June, 2010.    Like most missing persons cases I have covered in the past,  I am of the strong opinion that best efforts at the truth are the only way to propel investigations that, similarly to Kyron’s, have gone cold for one reason or another.   This approach has worked in resolving some of my previous cases.    I am proud of that.  I remain steadfast to the integrity involved in those and future cases.

Over the past 10 months (or so) I have been developing an updated series on Kyron’s case to include my multiple interviews with Kyron’s step-mom,  Terri Horman.   Needless to say as she was the subject of at least three simultaneous cases before an Oregon court and remains a person of interest by the agency investigating her sons disappearance, this has been an arduous and sometimes delicate journey.    Ms. Horman’s experiences during the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Kyron Horman are critically important to propelling his case and with great hope- finding the truth about what happened to this cherubic and innocent child.    There are dozens of sources,  collateral interviews, forensic experts and legal analysts that also contribute to my series and have done so because of their belief that my motivation is to bring to light information and opinions in such a way that would almost “require” a focused review of Kyron’s case and the likely shaking of that proverbial tree everyone talks about.

Set to publish about 6-ish weeks ago I was asked to postpone the first installment of the series, which I did.  I subsequently learned Ms. Horman was participating in the Dr. Phil program after she completed taping.  Dr. Phils producers were well aware that Ms. Horman had interviewed with me extensively, and anticipated my series would be publishing information that was not known to the public previously in the days prior to her scheduled episode.    When Ms. Horman conveyed to me that she feels obligated to speak out about “her son” in any national medium that will have her,   I most certainly respected that.  I still do.

While Dr. Phil seems like a gregarious fellow for sure,   I have zero interest in being associated with his program, nor do I believe his shows content is designed to do any furtherance of investigation or truth.  There is much concern (although I have no affiliation to the show whatsoever) that the timing of the publication of my series on the Kyron Horman matter might be interpreted differently or inadvertently contribute to the programs content or audience reactions.     Not what I signed on for.   A missing 7 year old boy six years running is not a framework for entertaining a target audience.   He is not fodder for online social media bully campaigns- yet it occurs.

I will be publishing my series on Kyron’s case at a later date, in it’s entirety with no editing adjustments as a result of any of the appearances on Dr. Phil.   I appreciate your patience and your understanding.   Feel free to discuss the show below.

So it’s a respectable inference, since these workshop fliers went out likely in Spring, by 6/4/10 the switch had been made by BEF from solar to wind & kidwind had already been involved in project mgmt.

I don’t think BEF spent much on these school installations. It relied on many funding partners, OR Energy Trust, Portland Electric, BEF was kinda more a Bonneville “branding” business and doing so with others’ money and donations imo. The “installation” at Skyline had to be low demand wrt Skyline’s existing electrical box and wiring. A few solar panels on the roof coukdn’t be absorbed into Skyline’s infrastructure and had to set aside for that reason. Imo this work is done by energy cos like Bonneville Power and by nonprofits like Kidwind for educational purposes. It seems a kind of preevangelism to ensure acceptance of wind turbines as desireable by future energy consuming voters imo.

To set the record straight, I’m not accusing anyone who may or may not have been involved in Kyron’s disappearance belongs to any group, employer or whatever. Could be just some ff’d up dude like Adan Brown.

What I AM asking is: have we looked at everyone who was involved in and around that school between September 2009 and June 4 2010? For instance, IIRC, the seismically review was done around those date, so were the historical value assessments done. Sounds to me like those school doors and halls were so darn open, it would be almost impossible to to find a perp unless there was DNA, and of course, a body, and/or some other reason to believe there was a crime committed.

That being said, I still wonder if it is at all possible that Kyron wandered into the tall grass and was snatched up big time by a female bear trying to feed her cubs. (Crazy? Maybe but stranger things have happened, not to mention the time of year would be about right.)

What I can say with certainty is to my knowledge, the only evidence to refute that possibility was through search teams clearing the area. People jest, but I always remind myself of the hungry Dingo in any mp case.

that Lauren, whose quote about Desiree Soldier crossposted from Dr Phil puzzled me. She was in the Portland region she said, only a year or two. She would’ve lived in military housing. And her social circle where she says everyone was talking about Kyron would have been other Army military intelligence wives. I suggested her maj husband was probably at Ft Lewis WA because it seems that’s a major military intelligence base. Then I remembered Neil spent his career in mil intell in WA, and after retirement remained active in Army reserves. His wife cofounded the family support group program for wives at Ft Lewis in the 80s:

  7. A Texas Grandfather says:

The problem with solar panels is that they produce DC current requiring equipment to convert it to AC for normal equipment, although a separate box and power line could have fed the DC to classrooms where computers were in use.

Wind powered generators are normally AC that would require step-down transformers to match the voltage being fed to the school. That voltage may arrive at 480 volts with transformers being used to reduce the voltage to 220/240 and 120 for lighting and convenience circuits.

The introduction of this equipment to the school would certainly have brought new people to the school. While the building wiring could have been accomplished by PPS maintenance people, the tower and generator construction would not likely fit the skills of regular school electricians. In addition, this is union country where work rules set the exact things the craftsmen are allowed to do.

It appears to me that during this time period there were a large number of outside people on and in the school property that were not parents. Quality craftsmen can walk through a building a time or two and learn where everything is located.

Thanks a lot for finding that, I knew I’d read that there was something going on in 2010 regarding that Turbine. I remember looking at the names of the people who used to be involved Solar4schools as well. All that has disappeared the way of the DAD thread. It isn’t even in Google cache, which is really odd. I could be wrong, but I’m thinking I read in some PPS or Skyline document that the turbine was initially supposed to be done in the fall of 2010, not 2011, which always made me wonder why it was postponed. The hole they have to dig for that Turbine is very deep, and I always wondered just when did the actual work begin on that unit? I would assume they’d have to find a suitable location on the grounds somewhere to put it well ahead of time. Where exactly was it put on the property anyway? That post from “Troll” was strange.

  19. T. Ruth says:

    E. Matthews taught K-1, room 109. Why would such a “cool” project be located in a kindergarten or first grader’s class? So cool it would pique the interest of an older child? I’m not sure how sophisticated and cool a 1st grader’s electrical project could be. This makes me wonder if Kyron’s stop in Matthews class was not where he originally was heading. Perhaps he just short-stopped there, but it was not his destination. Is it possible he helped this person who asked for his help, but then continued on to a “really cool” electrical project he’d been told about located elsewhere, say the basement, or the library or the gym or in one of the older kid’s classrooms?

Would be nice to know what the kids would agree was the coolest electrical project there that day and where it was located.

  20. T. Ruth says:

According to the map, Mathews class is in what’s considered the basement. Am I looking at this correctly, Kyron would have gone down the stairwell that would put him basically right next to EM’s class, so he could have just stopped there, but been on his way to the gym. Do you get to the gym down that hallway? Weren’t the older kid’s projects set up in the gym that day? TK said he saw Kyron sans Terri in the gym that day. Was it possibly after he helped whomever it was carry something in? TK was told by LE specially not to reveal what time he saw him. Why?

  21. T. Ruth says:

I was looking at it wrong, the gym looks like you access it only from the second floor, and the cafeteria is in the basement. So the talent show was also held in the gym, second floor?

  22. T. Ruth says:

I hope Blink comes out with a map that is more clear and shows which teacher was assigned to which room and what the heck is in all those other rooms on the basement level? If Kyron went outside to help someone, isn’t it possible he went back outside and then went into the gym from one of the outside doors?

The grant is expected to cover the testing of about 2,600 kits from the three counties. Of the total, 1,428 have been sent to the Sorenson Forensics lab, based in Salt Lake City. About a third of those have been tested.

In some cases, the tests found only DNA from alleged victims and no DNA from possible suspects, or the DNA sample was of such poor quality that no suspect could be identified.

But lab technicians have found quality, foreign DNA samples in 164 kits. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the foreign DNA belongs to a suspect — it could, for example, belong to someone that a victim had consensual sex with before being attacked.

Oregon officials are reviewing the 164 cases to decide whether to enter the DNA into local and national databases for a match. The databases consist of DNA from defendants convicted of crimes — or in some cases, people who’ve been arrested.

    *****************
Why on earth, what would be any reason for NOT entering the DNA into CODIS?

It depends on the circumstances but in general, absolutely must be.

You are correct about the deep foundation for a wind turbine tower. The big ones that produce 5 megawatts of wind power are close to 300 ft. in height with a foundation slab eight feet thick. This small tower would require between four and six feet of foundation that would be below grade at its top. The blades on the small tower may be 30 feet in length while the large wind turbine blades are one hundred feet or more.

I have seen the big blades being trucked through our area on the way to the big wind farms near Big Spring, Texas. They require an extension trailer connected to the main trailer via a long pipe shaft on the order of what logging trailers use.

I have always thought the person who took Kyron was someone who knew the building layout by either being a regular maintenance person or was a contract maintenance or construction person who hid himself in plain site due to the lack of proper procedures for security by the school administration.

I think your question about the age of the child who displayed the “Cool Electric One” is spot on. I don’t know what the rules were for parent participation in a project. Sometimes parents get a little too involved by building something that a child could not do. The electric project IMO could stretch the ability of some eighth students.

Based on what I have witnessed by by grandchildren and great-grandchildren, it is doubtful that anything other than plug-in lighting could be accomplished without adult help.

My whole intent in giving you my take on the computer was for you to be encouraged to try again. I could have written a lot more technical stuff, but decided to stop and let you digest that.

The key file after the boot loader gets things going is the Registry file that lists all the other files and activities that are to be loaded. It is a text file that acts as a system control file. It can be examined and modified to eliminate programs from running or change how things are ordered. This is an essential file for windows-all versions.

I will review my David Karp book on Windows 7 Annoyances for some ideas. This computer that I am typing this post is running a 64 bit version of Windows 7. The same as you HP all-in-one. Therefore, I can look a some things that might help. Once I get a look at my registry file, there will be some things that will be exactly as yours and some similar because of additions the mfg. has added. Caution, playing with the control file must be done with care so that things being changed do not have an adverse effect on the machine’s operation.

The next important thing is what is your internet connection? If it is a copper land line via a MODEM it will be limited to about 54kbs. If a cable connection via fiber optic it will be much faster. A DSL (digital subscriber line) is 1.544Mbs if you have it all to yourself-it is copper and normally is an extra charge over a regular telephone line. The distance from the Telco switch is one of the limitations of its speed.

The following are teacher classroom assignments at Skyline for 104, 109, and 110 for the associated years. I assume these classrooms correspond to “basement” rooms CLR104, CLR109, and CLR110. In 2008-2009 Matthews was in 109 and Cole was in 110. I am going to assume this was the same in 2009-2010. I would love to confirm this with the 2009-2010 handbook, but I have yet to find a link. Someone somewhere must have this information.

What is interesting is by 2010-2011 Mathews and Cole had switched classrooms according to the published handbook. Usually teachers are not all that happy about changing classrooms. If changes are made it is often to better group similar grade classrooms. Note McBeth stayed in 104 when he taught 4/5 in 2011-2012. Could it be the switch was done due to the incident described my Blink in this article, as a “comfort” to Ms. Mathews.

Have you are has anyone else ever found a copy of the 2009-10 Skyline Handbook to confirm room numbers for the teachers? Why did these teachers change rooms so often? Seems kinda’ odd, since they’re not changing grade levels (with the exception of Porter, in 2012). I too would like to see 09/10 room assignments confirmed.

@TRuth. iirc Teri said she took Kyron to see his former teacher MacBeth.
I don’t think Teri & Kyron took a basement rooms “tour.” Why not? The first bell had rung.
After his classroom pic, library book return, and MacBeth, imo they were out of time.
Taking him to see MacBeth was nurturing. Additionally, in her shoes I’d privately whisper
to him if the opportunity presented K had a dr visit in a week she’d love some feedback for
beforehand. (to check behavioral consistency from teacher to teacher)

I believe that many people are under the impression that the only way Ky, or another child, would leave with a stranger is unwillingly and only if taken by force. That the family believes this is evident in early statements that he would never go with a stranger, implying (or stating?) that this is due to his shy temperament. The recent Florida case of Charish Perriwinkle is a perfect example of this wrong thinking: the perp befriended the family at Wal-Mart, took the girl away from her family to the front of the store for a snack (everyone’s cooperative at this point) and just kept walking. Because the population believes that Ky would not go with s stranger, they assume / have to believe that SZ was known to TH and thus Ky.

Picture this: a man who looks like all the other dads in dress and appearance, or other “former students,” slides up to a boy and begins talking about the cool projects, they exchange names, make small talk. The man says that he has some stuff in the car and would the boy be willing to help him … creating a feeling that the boy is being honored by being asked. The boy, now excited at the chance to do something special asks a teacher for permission. The teacher looks at the eager boy and the man, who looks like the dad of one of the students in general or is maybe even confused with a particular dad, and grants permission. Her guard is down due to the nature of the event and the community feeling of everyone there. Even the witnesses are not on guard. I am not excusing the teacher or blaming the witness. I am simply saying that nobody recognized the situation because it seemed so normal, and I believe this is one reason that Blink says SZ is a sophisticated offender.

I have not found a handbook staff directory for 2009-2010. In fact, links I used for 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 no longer work. Fortunately I took the time to save the documents long ago. This has been asked before, has TMH retained a copy of the staff directory from 2009-2010 and/or has Blink been able to obtain one?

I took some time to put together a slightly cleaned up school layout plus staff information into one image. Also, included are some places where I understand Kyron (K), and TMH and Ki (T-ki) were at in the school that morning.

    School Layout With Staff Information

The layout with the adjacent year’s staff directories makes it pretty clear what most of the room assignments were for 2009-2010. I think it has been verified the room switch between Mathews and Cole took place after the 2009-2010 school year.

I just noticed an oversight. I forgot to add to the image as a change in 2010-2011:

    IB Support Staff
    IB Coordinator/Math Teacher
    Kimla Johnson-Koziuk 106

I do not recall if this person was at skyline in 2009-2010, or if this was a position during that year.

Has anyone ever disclosed the name of the person doing the presenting in the photo blink provided from Ms. Mathews room on the day Kyron disappeared? It was such a good, cool project I was wondering if he was associated with the school?

Thanks. Since you mentioned it, did Kyron ever attend the daycare? Do you know if the daycare operators there on June 4, or was it cancelled because of the sci fair? (If Blink is putting this info in her piece, then I’ll just wait for my answer.)

Yes, and especially after he had been apparently recently reprimanded for not following someone’s orders. Also, in the photos/videos I’ve seen, Kyron didn’t seem like that shy of a kid to me. It will be interesting to hear Terri’s take on that description of him.

I’ve watched so many tv news-type shows where the parents insist that the child will not open the door for a stranger or go off with a strange man/woman, and then when the actual situation is presented to the child by actors and being video-taped, the parent(s) are in shock that their child did exactly what they thought would never happen. Some of these parents even cried, when they realized how vulnerable their child still was, even after what they had considered as thorough coaching.

For goodness sakes, if a teacher like Matthews, nods her approval, why would ANY child hesitate? In that circumstance, it’s almost like a command, “Yes, Kyron, go help him.”.

There was a Portland City Council meeting night before last, discussing the new police union contract that is being pushed thru by the mayor (it’s not due until June 2017). Things got out of hand when, during a break, some people spoke out about the suspected abuses. When things resumed in the meeting, the mayor brought police teams in, including Homeland Security, and arrested the Don’t Shoot PDX leader, injuring her in the process. Here is a ‘first person’ account of the incident at this link:

@TRuth. Looks to me like thefront line individual school project mgr S4S staff there in 2010 have turned over. In fact I don’t see an explicit part of their school site job in tge present day is to do a teaching on the topic in classrooms. It feels like bef has developed curriculum they provide the regular school teacher to transmit. I don’t think Troll was leaping to the defense of BEF or associated with bef. Who reads this site, not bef employees who are touchy. Imo it was someone Very Upset with anyone directing the focus away from Teri and suggesting other possibilities. People overwrought about the suggestion others should be ruled out were Soldier’s platoon and Associates. They were the ones reading suggestions they angrily disagree with here in 2013.

  43. erose says:

I think Mags makes a reasonable assumption as to how it went down. What doesn’t make sense is why LE didn’t look for this perpetrator, why this never made the news, why the teacher never stepped up, why a description wasn’t released (unless they knew who this was) and why they focused their blame on TH. This is where a tragic mistake jumped the shark into the Bermuda Triangle of the abyss and took Kyron with it.

  44. A Texas Grandfather says:

    MBS

In regard to Kyron’s size. If I remember correctly, his height was reported to be 43″ which is very small for his age. Some children grow very slowly in their early years and some are fast. It depends on their genes inherited from the mother and father.

At eight years of age I was 58″ tall having entered first grade at 52″. By the time I graduated eighth grade I was 72″ tall. I had a friend that was in my classes from first grade through high school. He was always short, but he had brothers that were 6 ft or more. He joined the Navy after high school and grew eight inches in six months to reach six feet. We always teased him that his older brothers ate all the food and he didn’t get enough to grow.

If we remember what we learned in biology class about growth, the tall and small genes were always present and the height was dependent on which gene turned on.

  45. Rose says:

@Quissi, thank you. One can infer why Mathews’ K room was changed.
@TRuth. I would expect many 7 yo boys would appear “shy” outside their natural social environment (Portland), and with the severe vision disability, imo direct eye contact, looking at someone directly, is a learned skill for such children. Most infer when a young child does not look at them directly, that he’s shy. Medford was not his natural social environment, however much he loved them, and if he wanted to stay there, he must have felt “on approval” each visit.

  46. Rose says:

@TRuth. Come to think of it, Mathews would never correct publically a mother passionately telling the public K walked out the door with Teri. That would be hanging a sign around her neck shouting “So Sue Me.” Would anyone want to turn Desiree and her insane Soldiers to fixate on themself rather than Teri?

  47. Rose says:

It would be interesting to know if bef has gotten out of the business of sending proj mgr staff directly into their project classrooms to “teach” and explain the project. If so when did the change occur? Why? I remember 2010 proj mgr bios were of recent grads (iirc makes) from places like OSU and OSHU who came from “related fields” (to b- ef), not teachers. Also Kidwind’s model 2010ff was to select current teachers nationwide and train them to be “Senators” to teach their curriculum to peer teachers in hist sites.

  48. Rose says:

kewl, the police & HSA surrounding tge chamber and rushing in were preset and directed by Marshman. Hales merely issued the trigger words.
The swat teams (pps), Gresham police, & federal agents surrounding and locking down City Hall were also not firected by Hales, they were directed by Marshman, or a Homeland Security or FBI commander at the request of Marshman. I woukd not be surprized if Reese/mcso were cooperating team members.

Here is what thus event was. PPB, Mult County, City of Portland, MCSO rejoined tge Joint Terrorism Task For d (a regional LE entity) AFTER Kyron’s kidnapping. That was why Art Balizan was sent to Portland, had his friendly face before the cameras side by side with mcso the first 2 weeks of June. He got the political coup, and retired.

This event was the JTTF’s first high profile preplanned show of force “to restore public order” since the JTTF was reconstituted.

It is an effort imo to consolidate Marshman’s power as he’s a weak Chief.

What is frightening is the failure of Portland’s First Estate to realize this much less cover it from that angle.
altho that fits in with zero print coverage since marshman/reese took office.

Reese’s sole interview was to drop by an apparent friend’s office, Jacquiss, to politic on the ballot measure. keep in mid it wasWW jacquiss who had the pipeline to Riddell and first began the reated articles that drove Staton out of office and Reese in. Staton said Reese told him last winter he planned to seek Sheriff. I bet he told Jacquiss last winter too.

BTW I bet none of that JTTF homeland security police exercise would have happened without Wyden’s preknowledge if not preapproval. I think he’s the 500 lb control the levers of power social system in town. BTW I bet DA signed onto this JTTF enterprize in advance, in fact was on the planning team, and the “jail” is Reese’s and woukd’ve been on prealert.

All Portlanders should be worried about the Marshman (who got the chief job because he’d been the DOAJ/FBI PPB liaison for years), his friend Reese, local fbi field office dir, HSA alliance in the absence of hecks snd balances lije an independent DA. This imo was inituated and led by Marshman is on a social system scale what smacking his stepson around at home indicated.
