Casey/Caylee Anthony Murder Trial: Closing Arguments Bring New Confessions By Jose Baez And New Smirks By Jeff Ashton

Assistant State’s Attorney Jeff Ashton began the closing arguments with such scalpular precision my mind wandered briefly where I actually pictured him scrubbing in, just before entering court. In approximately 77 minutes,  with 2 overruled objection by Jose Baez, Ashton tied up the one thing he is NOT required to present to the jury,  Casey’s motive for murdering her toddler, setting the tone for his closing that presented more like an excerpt from a Grisham flick.  I say let him play himself.

“..It’s easy to be a parent, sometimes.. It’s easy to be a parent, when your playing with your child, or when your enjoying your child, children are fun… But we all know that being a parent is much more than just playing with your children.. Being a parent is about sacrifice.. Your child becomes your life. This case is about the clash between that responsibility and the expectations that go with it, and the life that Casey Anthony wanted to have… “

Ashton went through the time line of 31 days including details from the elaborate lies Casey Anthony told to avoid detection from her Mother Cindy, her imaginary friend finder chip located in the unallocated sectors of her mind where her conscious should have been, and the fact there is only one reason to duct tape a small child: MURDER.  Ashton reminded jurors that the defense theory is asking them to head down rabbitholes that defy reasonable thought.  It makes one wonder if that was not exactly the source of inspiration behind Jose Baez Dr. Huntington pigs sans blankets experiment.

Cheshire Cat: By-the-bye, what became of the baby? I’d nearly forgotten to ask.

Alice: It turned into a pig.

The Cat: I thought it would.

Jose was spotted given jurors a parting gift over lunch, which was intercepted by deputies.

Doom and Gloom Loom for Camp Casey

On what is likely to be her day of reckoning, Ms. Anthony was less than thrilled to learn that 2 of the bullseye on her defense’s dart board were permanently removed, I reckon. George and Lee Anthony, the crux of the defense’s failed attempts to blame Casey Anthony’s selective post traumatic stress disorder, will not be allowed to be maligned further based on her allegations of sexual abuse.

As expected, Jose Baez began his closing arguments reminding jurors the defense is not required to “defend” at all.  In short, his comments were structured around the trash being altered because it was allowed to dry, and that the state allowed jurors to pass around the velveeta pouch so they could help figure out “Who cut the cheese.”  You read that correctly, he actually said that.

Baez Wyle e

He also went on to express his concerns that the State painted his client as a slut, and by doing so, invoking their emotions which will be used to find her guilty, as opposed to actual evidence.

In what I will call flub #3 in less than 40 minutes, Jose Baez inadvertently tells jurors that Casey Anthony’s trunk for the usage ot transportation is not murder. HEH?  I thought the defense was quite adamant the junk in the trunk is what stunk.  I guess that’s now bunk, whoda’ thunk?

Jose Baez is currently continuing his contribution to the defense’s, and Cheney Mason is on as anchor to complete the allotted 4 hours.

Linda Drane Burdick has had 3 sustained objections and granted one move to strike already.  I lost that bet dangit.

Flub #4 flies in, while I am editing.  This lawyer just actually admitted Casey searched for chloroform based on Ricardo Morales’s image on his computer.  OMG.

..” It should be natural for her to want to know what chloroform was if her boyfriend had the image on his myspace…”  Jose Baez

Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick will complete the State’s rebuttal closing argument.

On an unrelated note, the jury has selected their preference for the order of question during the press conference scheduled following a verdict.  It is as follows:

1.  CNN 2.  WFTV 3.  St. Pete Times 4.  Reuters 5.  People 6.  HLN 7.  WDBO 8.  NBC 9.  MSNBC 10.WTSP 11.FOX 12.Orlando Magazine 13.Florida Sun 14.WKMG 15.Dateline 16.WTMY 17.Chathouse 18.CFN 13 19.WOFL 20.Tampa Tribune 21.In Session 22.Orlando Sentinel 23.Univision 24.AP 25.Discovery 26.ABC 27.EFE 28.CBS 29.WESH

If that is not a window to this jury, I don’t know what is.

To Be Continued, Active Blogroll on this thread through today’s session. On the day that Governor Scott signed his first death warrant for Manuel Valle, convicted of killing a Coral Gables police officer a few counties away, I would not hold out any hope that Ann Finnell’s motion for mistrial based on Federal Court’s ruling striking the death penalty in Florida, will be granted. Have just caught up with LDB rebuttal and closing for the Prosecution; she did Caylee proud!!
I was bored witless with the closing by Baez although admired his ability to dance around without the use of notes. Probably would have been better if he had used notes, less Freudian slips!!
Heartstopping moment when ‘laughing guy’ Jeff Ashton was called out by the defense. Yes, he was smiling behind his hand but come on! If you have ever seen a British Panto you would understand why Mr. Ashton was near to busting! Baez was capering around the Court like a Pantomime Dame….”Look behind you”!……”Oh no she didn’t”!.. “Oh yes she did”!!….
So many fantastic posts, it was a pleasure to read every single one. Loved the Tourrettes reference Blink!! Mr. Ashton is a very passionate attorney, immensely intelligent, great litigator but his Achilles heel will always be his ‘short fuse’ but that is what makes watching him at work so exciting!
Sorry, I can’t remember who asked the question, did we think the Jurors had already decided, well yes, I really do think they have and that considering all the evidence is just a formality.
Please, does anyone know how I can get notice of when the Jury is coming in with their verdict bearing in mind I am in the UK?? Having followed for so many years, I really do want to “be in Court” to witness Justice for Caylee.
Finally, thank you so much Blink for all you have done to seek Justice for Caylee and all lost and murdered children, you are awesome, I hold you in the highest regard.
Mom3.0 – Your brilliant posts have helped me so much to understand the complexities of the American Justice system. One of your posts was equivalent to hours of viewing, thank you.
Ragdoll – I have laughed out loud at your clever, funny, passionate posts. I feel I know you, thank you friend.
Chica – wherever you disappeared to. I trust you have followed the Trial; thank you for just being the firecracker poster you were. I have so missed your posts – trust and hope you are well.
ATG – Wise and smart, wish you had been my Grandpa instead of the stern, dispassionate Victorian gentleman that was! Have enjoyed your posts immensely.
Thank you ALL so much for making me welcome but mostly for joining forces in an effort to seek justice for a beautiful child murdered by the hand of her cold, merciless, lying mother.

Flumberlooski….Linda SA last to speak to defend Caylee said Mr. Ashton left the ball on the one yard line. They called a recess and Linda had to kick the ball through the goal posts. Not exactly how it was said but that is how she began her rebuttal.

Linda even recognized the Hawk asking jury to see the forest through the trees.

Linda recongized Judge Strickland by using the word irony is rich indeed.

Thank you Blink I have finally stopped crying. Happy Independence day to all and Caylee. I am just a sap. I say verdict is in at least for me. Doesn’t really matter to me anymore. Caylees voice has been heard. Lesson is out there to be learned if need be.

  15. myers says:

I am wondering what everyone’s opinion is about this. Do you think that Casey left with Caylee on the 15th after the supposed argument(choking) and killed her that night. She was dressed in her bed clothes and had no shoes because Casey took off in a hurry. Did she dig in a diaper bag and pulled out that shirt and the shorts(which were left in a diaper bag as extra clothing and maybe the reason for her starting to out grow them) Cindy called casey’s cell at 7am on the 16th more than likely because casey was not there. Question? Where did Casey go that night? I do think we know that there was computer activity on the Anthony computer on the afternoon of the 16th. If George did not see Caylee that day on the 16th, he has to remember when he really did see her for the last time. I just do not understand why the argument did not come up in the case. Was the prosecution trying to keep that low key for some reason or would it have really opened a can of worms and turned the case in the different direction?

  16. Ragdoll says:

I saw JVM run after Baez. She said something to the effect of….Come Jose, we know each other. He replies to her…how are you doing?. That’s it….lol.

  17. @Mharris–I think it was because Jeff Ashton made reference to Casey anthony lying program “casey 3.0″. Anyone correct me if I am mistaken.
Also someone asked about lip reading, re: casey. My take on what she said when LDB started her rebuttal, was “this is a farce”. sorry, I cant link it, but I am sure everyone will re-play the videos, and see it.

    myers-

I am so with you on this. First I guess, nothing could be brought up, if nobody acknowledged the incident on the 15th. I believe George worked that evening. He said her car was there -he thought- when he came home late. The only other explanation for the 7am call in my mind, would be Casey calling her phone to locate it. I guess it could not be proven. I dont believe that, as it was a second skin to her. Cindy likely noticed the car was gone when she awakened and thus called her phone.

Myers: I am not sure about killing her that night, but I do wonder if KC took off in the night because of the article posted a few days ago in which Rick P (Cindy’s bro) x-wife said she heard thru CIndy’s mother that there was a fight and that KC took off in the night.

I believe cell phone pings place KC at/near the Anthony house from about 8 am to 4 in the afternoon – but perhaps KC was gone until after Cindy left for work. We will never know what happened in that house that day.

That is exactly what I think, Myers. I also wonder why it didn’t get into the prosecution case or perhaps they weren’t made aware of it. I don’t know, but I think it goes straight to motive in a way nothing else really did. In my heart, I think Cindy’s justifiable rage at Casey (built up over many outrageous Casey acts against family) probably sent Casey off into the night vowing to pay her mother back for it. A prime example as to why her family avoided confrontation with her–don’t cross Casey or we will all pay. Whew.

I thought GH testified that he saw Caylee last, with Casey, on the 16th.

  40. Lleah says:

Myers…Eloise……you have got it right about the big fight on the night of the 15th. The fight was prompted by Cindy being told by her mother, Shirley Plesia, during the Father’s Day visit, that Casey had stolen from an account used for the grandfather’s care. This was pretty much the last straw for Cindy…and she confronted Casey. Huge fight…choking incident…Casey was “thrown out” or left on her own in the night (per your info from Shirley Plesia). The scenario you described fits in here….that is probably the night Caylee was killed. Casey was frustrated and hysterically mad at Cindy…feeling desperate. I think George lied about seeing them on the morning of the 16th….to protect Cindy. The reason this was not presented in court was because the theft was considered to be prejudicial evidence and was ruled non admissable. Cindy wasn’t about to bring it up anyway. She is terribly guilty about it…because it was the last time she saw Caylee. Not telling this story changed the whole narrative. I thought once when “the door was opened” by Cindy on the stand in regards to the check fraud charges that the prosecution may go ahead with it….but it didn’t happen.
I feel Casey will be found guilty and receive a life sentence, love coming here and reading this thread…all of you are great.L.

Cindy is an enigma. I’m sure a talented psychiatrist could dissect the family dynamics and answer some of the questions that we ALL have.

As disgusted as I am with Cindy’s lies on the stand, I don’t blame her for the death of Caylee. Casey alone holds responsibility for her actions.
